Chapter 11: Chapter Nine: The Watchers of the Ruins

Lin Yue did not sleep well that night.

Not because she was frightened.

At least, that was what she told herself.

She simply had too many things to think about.

The northern ruins.

The ancient agricultural system.

The mysterious glowing tower.

The warning from the golden space.

And the strange feeling that something had noticed her.

She turned over.

Then turned back.

Then pulled the blanket over her head.

Five minutes later, she sat up.

”No.”

She climbed out of bed.

Qiao’er, sleeping on the other side of the room, mumbled:

”Miss...”

”Yes?”

”Go to sleep.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”How did you know I was awake?”

”You’ve been turning around for an hour.”

”Oh.”

Qiao’er pulled the blanket over her head.

”Whatever you’re planning, do it tomorrow.”

Lin Yue sighed.

”Fine.”

She lay down again.

Moon, who had been sleeping near the door, opened one eye.

The silver fox stared at her.

Lin Yue stared back.

”You too?”

Moon closed his eyes.

Traitor.

Morning Brings Trouble

The next morning began with shouting.

”MISS!”

Lin Yue opened her eyes.

Qiao’er burst through the door.

”The chickens!”

Lin Yue immediately sat up.

”What happened?”

”They escaped!”

Again.

Lin Yue hurried outside.

The entire chicken enclosure was empty.

Except for General.

He stood proudly on the fence.

Lin Yue stared at him.

General crowed.

She pointed.

”Where are the others?”

General crowed again.

”You know.”

Another crow.

”You’re responsible.”

General turned his head away.

Lin Yue narrowed her eyes.

”I don’t trust that face.”

Qiao’er whispered:

”Miss, he’s a chicken.”

”He’s a criminal.”

General flew down.

Then walked away as though nothing had happened.

Lin Yue followed.

They eventually found the hens in the cabbage field.

Every single one.

They had destroyed three rows.

Lin Yue stood silently.

Qiao’er stood beside her.

Shen Rui arrived at exactly the wrong moment.

He looked at the field.

Then at Lin Yue.

Then at General.

”Bad morning?”

Lin Yue pointed.

”Your nephew did this.”

Shen Rui looked at the rooster.

”My nephew?”

”He’s part of the family now.”

General crowed.

Shen Rui laughed.

”You’ve become attached.”

”I have not.”

”You called him family.”

”I was angry.”

”Of course.”

Lin Yue turned away.

”Everyone, repair the cabbage.”

Shen Rui followed.

”Need help?”

”Yes.”

”From your brother?”

”From anyone who can make themselves useful.”

He smiled.

”Then I’m staying.”

The Farm’s First Harvest

Despite the chicken disaster, the farm continued to improve.

The first major harvest arrived.

Cabbages.

Beans.

Radishes.

Leafy greens.

Herbs.

And a small amount of grain.

It wasn’t enough to feed the entire estate.

But it was enough to prove something.

The land could produce.

Uncle Zhao stood in the field holding a freshly harvested cabbage.

He smiled.

”When I first saw this soil, I thought nothing would grow.”

Lin Yue took the cabbage.

”You were wrong.”

He laughed.

”I was.”

He looked around.

”You changed it.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”We changed it.”

Uncle Zhao nodded.

That distinction mattered.

Lin Yue never wanted the farm to depend entirely on her.

If she was the only person who knew how everything worked, then the farm would collapse when she was gone.

So she taught.

The workers learned.

The children learned.

Qiao’er learned.

Even Shen Rui had started keeping notes.

Knowledge had to spread.

That was the only way a community became strong.

The Farm Ledger

That afternoon, Lin Yue gathered everyone.

A large wooden board was placed beneath the tree.

On it she wrote:

EASTERN FARM — MONTHLY RECORD

Production

Vegetables: 182 baskets

Eggs: 96

Grain: 14 sacks

Herbs: 31 bundles

Expenses

Seeds.

Tools.

Worker wages.

Animal feed.

Repairs.

Transport.

Income

Vegetable sales.

Egg sales.

Tool sales.

She turned around.

”Everyone should understand where the money goes.”

Da Shan scratched his head.

”Why?”

”Because if we don’t know, we can’t improve.”

She pointed toward the expenses.

”If we spend too much here, we need to understand why.”

Then the income.

”If production increases but profit doesn’t, something is wrong.”

Uncle Zhao nodded slowly.

”That makes sense.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Farming isn’t just planting.”

She pointed around them.

”It’s planning.”

She pointed to the water channel.

”Water management.”

The compost.

”Soil management.”

The chickens.

”Animal management.”

The ledger.

”Financial management.”

Then the workers.

”And people management.”

Qiao’er whispered:

”Miss, that’s a lot.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Yes.”

Then she smiled.

”That’s why we work together.”

A Small Celebration

That evening, the household held a simple meal to celebrate the first successful harvest.

There were steamed buns.

Vegetable dishes.

Eggs.

Soup.

Pickled vegetables.

Fresh fruit.

Nothing extravagant.

But everyone was happy.

Lin Yue’s father raised his cup.

”To the eastern farm.”

The workers smiled.

Lin Yue looked down.

Her father continued:

”And to my daughter.”

She looked up.

”For making barren land productive.”

Everyone applauded.

Lin Yue’s cheeks warmed.

She wasn’t used to praise.

Shen Rui leaned toward her.

”You look embarrassed.”

”I’m not.”

”You are.”

”I’m simply warm.”

He glanced toward the open window.

”It’s cold outside.”

Lin Yue glared at him.

He smiled.

She tried not to smile.

She failed.

The Family’s Changing Attitude

Something else had changed.

The family no longer treated Lin Yue’s farm as a strange hobby.

They had begun relying on it.

Fresh vegetables went to the kitchen.

Eggs were sold.

The improved tools were becoming popular.

The household expenses had fallen.

And the western field was beginning development.

Even Lin Yue’s stepmother had started visiting the farm.

One afternoon, she stood beside the pond.

”The water is clear.”

”We keep the livestock away from it.”

Madam Zhao nodded.

”And this?”

”Compost.”

Madam Zhao looked suspiciously at the pile.

”It smells.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Only a little.”

Madam Zhao laughed.

”You’ve changed.”

Lin Yue looked at her.

”How?”

”You used to hate getting your hands dirty.”

Lin Yue looked at her muddy hands.

”Apparently I’ve changed my mind.”

Madam Zhao smiled.

”I can see that.”

She touched Lin Yue’s hair.

”I’m proud of you.”

Lin Yue froze.

Again.

Two people had said it within a week.

Her father.

Madam Zhao, her stepmother.

She looked away.

”Thank you.”

Madam Zhao smiled knowingly.

She had noticed.

The Northern Lights

Three nights later, the golden space changed again.

Lin Yue was checking the fields when she saw it.

A light.

Far away.

Beyond the northern mountains.

She immediately called Shen Rui.

He arrived moments later.

”What happened?”

She pointed.

The central tower of the ruins was glowing.

Brighter than before.

Then—

another tower lit up.

Then another.

One by one, golden lights appeared across the ancient settlement.

Shen Rui frowned.

”That’s not natural.”

”No.”

”Can the space tell you what it is?”

Lin Yue concentrated.

A message appeared.

[Ancient structure activation detected.]

Then:

[Cause unknown.]

Lin Yue’s expression became serious.

”Even the space doesn’t know.”

Shen Rui looked toward the ruins.

”Then perhaps we should stay away.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”I agree.”

He looked at her suspiciously.

”You’re agreeing very quickly.”

”I’ve learned.”

”Good.”

She smiled.

”Besides, there’s something more important.”

”What?”

Lin Yue pointed toward the farm.

”The western field.”

Shen Rui laughed.

”You’re impossible.”

The Western Field

The western field was larger than the original farm.

That meant more work.

Lin Yue divided it into sections.

Section One

Grain.

Section Two

Beans.

Section Three

Root vegetables.

Section Four

Future orchard.

Section Five

Experimental crops.

She also planned a rotation system.

Different crops would occupy different sections each season.

The goal was simple.

Don’t exhaust the soil.

Lin Yue explained the plan to Uncle Zhao.

He nodded.

”We usually leave fields fallow.”

”That can work.”

She pointed at the sections.

”But with careful rotation, we may use the land more efficiently.”

”What will you plant after grain?”

”Beans.”

”Why?”

”They can help restore soil fertility.”

Uncle Zhao looked impressed.

”You really do know strange things.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”I’ve read strange books.”

The Seed House

The next structure they built was a seed house.

It was small.

Dry.

Well ventilated.

Raised above ground level.

Lin Yue insisted on keeping seeds separated.

Each container received a label.

Crop.

Variety.

Date.

Source.

Storage conditions.

Notes.

Qiao’er stared at the shelves.

”Miss, why do we need so many labels?”

”So we know what we’re planting.”

”You’ll remember.”

”I might.”

”But you remember everything.”

Lin Yue laughed.

”Not everything.”

She knew better.

Human memory was unreliable.

Written records were safer.

She wanted future generations to open these shelves and know exactly what had been planted.

The farm wasn’t merely producing food.

It was accumulating knowledge.

The Printing Idea

One afternoon, Lin Yue had another idea.

A very dangerous idea.

She looked at the piles of notes.

Agricultural instructions.

Worker schedules.

Accounting tables.

Seed records.

Construction diagrams.

Training instructions.

There was simply too much to copy by hand.

She needed printing.

The problem was—

she didn’t have a printing press.

Yet.

Lin Yue sat at the workshop table.

She sketched.

A frame.

A flat bed.

A movable plate.

Pressure mechanism.

Ink roller.

Paper guide.

Shen Rui entered.

”What are you making?”

”A printing press.”

He looked at the drawing.

”Why?”

”Because writing everything by hand is inefficient.”

”Can’t scribes copy it?”

”They can.”

”Then why not?”

”Because one book takes too long.”

She pointed to the drawing.

”With printing, one page can become hundreds.”

Shen Rui stared.

”You want to make books?”

”Yes.”

”How many?”

”All of them.”

He laughed.

”You really do think big.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Knowledge should not belong only to people who can afford it.”

The Blacksmith’s New Problem

Lin Yue brought the printing design to the blacksmith.

He stared at it.

Then stared at her.

”No.”

Lin Yue blinked.

”No?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”I make farm tools.”

”Yes.”

”Not strange machines.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Then we’ll learn.”

The blacksmith groaned.

He had a terrible feeling that this young woman was about to give him more work.

She was.

The First Printing Experiment

The first attempt was terrible.

The wooden plate broke.

The second attempt produced uneven pressure.

The third smeared the ink everywhere.

The fourth produced a page with half the letters missing.

Qiao’er looked at the result.

”It’s ugly.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”Yes.”

”Are you disappointed?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because now we know what doesn’t work.”

The blacksmith laughed.

”You really don’t give up.”

”No.”

She looked at the broken press.

”Try again.”

A Quiet Evening

That night, Lin Yue sat beside the pond.

Moon slept against her leg.

The farm was quiet.

She could hear frogs.

Crickets.

Wind moving through the crops.

From the main residence came faint voices.

Her family.

She smiled.

She had once imagined survival as something lonely.

A person alone in the wilderness.

Finding food.

Building shelter.

Avoiding danger.

But survival wasn’t only about surviving alone.

It was also about building a place where people could thrive.

Food.

Water.

Shelter.

Knowledge.

Trust.

Family.

Community.

That was the kind of survival she wanted.

Shen Rui sat beside her.

”You’re thinking again.”

”Yes.”

”About the ruins?”

”No.”

”What then?”

She looked at the farm.

”Home.”

He followed her gaze.

After a while, he said:

”It already feels like one.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Does it?”

”Yes.”

Neither spoke for a while.

Moon suddenly sneezed.

Lin Yue laughed.

Shen Rui smiled.

The quiet moment disappeared.

Again.

The Message

Just before midnight, Lin Yue entered the golden space.

The development progress had reached—

29%.

She smiled.

”Almost thirty.”

The system responded.

[Next milestone approaching.]

She looked around.

The fields were larger.

The lake had expanded.

The forest was thriving.

The workshop was becoming useful.

The library was slowly filling.

The ancient ruins had yielded agricultural knowledge.

The farm outside was becoming prosperous.

Everything was connected.

Then—

the golden sky darkened.

Lin Yue stopped.

A message appeared.

[WARNING.]

[Northern structure activation has accelerated.]

[External influence detected.]

She frowned.

”External?”

Another message appeared.

[A presence has entered the boundary of the golden space.]

Lin Yue’s blood went cold.

Someone—

or something—

was inside her world.

She immediately looked toward the northern mountains.

Nothing moved.

Then Moon began growling.

Low.

Deep.

Not playful.

Not curious.

Afraid.

Lin Yue slowly stood.

Shen Rui appeared behind her.

”What is it?”

She pointed toward the forest.

Between the trees stood a shadow.

Tall.

Still.

Watching them.

Lin Yue’s hand tightened around her lantern.

The shadow moved.

One step.

Then another.

Moon’s fur stood on end.

Shen Rui moved in front of Lin Yue.

”Stay behind me.”

Lin Yue shook her head.

”No.”

He glanced back.

She held the lantern higher.

”We don’t know what it is.”

The shadow stopped.

Then, slowly—

it raised one hand.

A golden symbol appeared in the air.

Lin Yue stared.

She recognized it.

It was the same symbol carved into the ancient stone tablet.

Her heart pounded.

The figure spoke.

Its voice was faint.

Almost like wind passing through trees.

”The keeper has returned.”

Lin Yue froze.

Shen Rui looked at her.

”Keeper?”

The figure vanished.

The forest became silent.

Then the golden system appeared.

[Hidden history unlocked.]

[Host identity recognized.]

[Inheritance sequence beginning.]

Lin Yue stared at the message.

”What inheritance?”

No answer came.

Instead—

far beyond the mountains—

the ancient city awakened.

And this time, every tower lit up at once.
