Chapter 2976: Chapter 2977: Wei Jiu’s Rise

Wei Jiu stepped forward and saluted, ”Master Xue, Wei Jiu means no offense, but given the situation, Wei Jiu is willing to take the responsibility that a man should bear.”

Bai Ruozhu silently gave a thumbs up to Wei Jiu. Look at his eloquence; no wonder he was trained by her master, Lin Zhenghui.

”This, this...” Master Xue was a bit overwhelmed, glancing at Jiang Yichun and then Wei Jiu, unsure of what to do.

”Master Xue, why not ask Miss Xue before making a decision? We’ve also brought some gifts of apology; I hope you will accept them with a smile,” Bai Ruozhu said.

Master Xue’s face flushed, ”You’ve saved my son and daughter multiple times; how can I accept your gifts of thanks? It is inappropriate.”

”Since we’ve already brought them, if the matter is settled, it could serve as a betrothal gift,” Bai Ruozhu added.

Master Xue didn’t know what to say, ”Then, then I’ll ask my daughter’s opinion.”

”Have Wei Jiu wait here, and my husband and I will go check on Master Xue,” Bai Ruozhu said.

”Much obliged, much obliged.” Master Xue hurriedly saluted.

After Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun left, Master Xue didn’t rush to see his daughter but started chatting with Wei Jiu.

He asked for Wei Jiu’s name, age, and where his family was, as if investigating household registration. But in general, when discussing marriage, these things need to be clarified, so Wei Jiu answered one by one.

”Aren’t you Bai Ruozhu’s bodyguard? How do you also have an official position?” Master Xue asked.

”Last year, the master asked me to participate in the martial exam, and I performed fairly and won third place. Afterward, the emperor gave me an official post, but primarily I ensure Bai Ruozhu’s safety,” Wei Jiu answered.

Master Xue breathed a sigh of relief; he wasn’t sold into servitude and even had a salary, enough to support his daughter.

...

Meanwhile, Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun went to see Xue Zhuo.

”Have you confirmed it?” Xue Zhuo asked somewhat awkwardly, yet it seemed he had been holding back for a long time and was determined to find out.

”You mean the matter of Xue Zhi being born of a concubine?” Bai Ruozhu asked.

Xue Zhuo nodded, ”I don’t care about her status; I just want to know why my father did that back in the day.”

Jiang Yichun spoke up, ”Your father was not cautious enough and got taken advantage of.”

”Does Zhizhi know now?” Xue Zhuo asked worriedly, ”Will talking about this affect her marriage prospects?”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help laughing, ”Young Master Xue, you really are someone who doesn’t pay attention to outside affairs; Xue Zhi is much smarter than you.”

”What do you mean?” Xue Zhuo asked, confused.

Bai Ruozhu said no more. She wanted Xue Zhi to eventually reveal her own cleverness; talking too much would alert her prematurely.

”I, I’ll go to the inn to apologize later.” Xue Zhuo said, blushing.

”Oh, okay.” Jiang Yichun wasn’t moved at all; his kindness was reserved for his lady.

Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun returned to find Wei Jiu, who had already been ”seen” by Xue Zhi but not given an immediate answer of agreement or disagreement.

”Master, I’ve said it, my lord will never take a concubine, so they should give up.” Wei Jiu said.

”You said it so directly?” Bai Ruozhu asked in surprise, as she had always found Wei Jiu to be more tactful.

Wei Jiu chuckled, ”I said I was the same as my lord; I would absolutely not take a concubine.”

Pfft, Bai Ruozhu gave a thumbs up, ”Well done, Wei Jiu; I’ll add a drumstick for you tonight.”

Wei Jiu was bewildered; what did adding a drumstick mean?

The three of them returned to the inn, and not long after, Xue Zhuo arrived laden with canes at the inn’s entrance, sending someone to ask Ao Song and the Astrologer to come down.

”Go ahead, Achun specially requested it. It will help vent your frustration and teach that boy a lesson,” Bai Ruozhu said.

Ao Song happily supported the Astrologer, ”He voluntarily came to kneel to you; it’s you who were injured.”

The Astrologer laughed; was this to support his grievances?

The inn’s downstairs was crowded with people. Even if everyone didn’t know Xue Zhuo, it didn’t stop them from watching the drama unfold.

Xue Zhuo straightforwardly knelt before the Astrologer and Ao Song, saying, ”I was reckless and hurt someone; I apologize to both of you and hope Master Astrologer will recover soon.”

The servant behind him carried the gifts forward, and he kowtowed three times to the Astrologer and Ao Song.

After kowtowing, the front of his shirt was stained with some blood, showing he was struggling.

”You should go back and recover properly. Don’t be so impulsive in the future,” the Astrologer said.

”Thank you for your guidance, master.” Xue Zhuo saluted and was escorted away by the servant.

The crowd dispersed too, and the Eternal King hummed twice, saying, ”You all have a ruthless heart; the person knows their mistake, so why push them to this extent?”

Bai Ruozhu gave him a big glare, ”Knowing the mistake means it’s fine? Making a mistake has a price; otherwise, how will he remember? He was so arrogant before; it’s good to dull his sharpness.”

”Hmph, the ancients were right; only women and petty people are hard to keep as company. You, with your petty nature, refuse to let him go,” the Eternal King said.

Jiang Yichun stepped in front of Bai Ruozhu, ”It was my idea; don’t involve my wife. If you are not ruthless, how about I cut you once and then admit my mistake and let it go at that?”

”Try cutting me. Do you want to fight?” The Eternal King said as he started to roll up his sleeves.

Gao Zhou, with exasperating lines on his forehead, quickly grabbed him and said, ”Enough, if you keep making a fuss, everyone will know you are not a guard; you might as well go back.”

After hearing this, the Eternal King stifled himself and obediently went back to his room to cultivate.

The next day, people from Master Xue’s side sent a message back saying it could be settled like this.

Bai Ruozhu said to the person, ”We still have an imperial decree to go to the Western Regions and can’t delay much. So, Miss Xue will have to bear with it; everything will be kept simple.”

The servant went back to report to Master Xue; whether it was Master Xue or Xue Zhi in a hurry, by the afternoon, someone had already brought Xue Zhi’s birth details, saying the next day was a good day to marry.

Bai Ruozhu wasn’t in the mood to deal with this and left it to Jianqi to talk with them in detail; she took Little Dengdeng out shopping instead.

”Let me tell you, don’t always focus on that box; staying indoors every day is not good.” Sure enough, she guessed it, Little Dengdeng was hooked on the Mechanical Box. Aside from eating, sleeping, and using the toilet, his eyes were only on the Mechanical Box, hardly holding Snowball anymore.

However, Snowball would find warmth itself, hopping onto Dengdeng’s lap to curl up in his arms or leaning beside him to sleep, super soft and adorable.

”There’s nothing interesting outside; anyway, when we travel, we’re always outside anyway.” Little Dengdeng said.

Bai Ruozhu was exasperated, ”Traveling is inside the carriage, which is even more closed off. Son, you can’t become a recluse.”

”I won’t be a recluse when I grow up.” Little Dengdeng defended.

”Uh...” Bai Ruozhu quickly thought of a reason, ”Didn’t you say you want to take care of Snowball? It needs to go out for a walk, or it’ll get sick. Look, its fur hasn’t been shiny these past days.”

Snowball cooperatively meowed twice, looking pitifully.

Well done, back home you’ll get dried fish as a reward!
