Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1730: Chapter 1730: Gained and Lost

Bai Ruozhu and her older brother listened clearly outside, both feeling somewhat saddened; they had no idea such old events existed, and their mother had never mentioned them.

In the room, Lin Ping’er’s voice sounded again, ”I’ve always been prideful and didn’t want to mention the disgraceful things of my natal family to the children. I just said they were mean and didn’t want to have dealings with them. But my eldest nephew and his wife are good people. Back then, he stopped me and secretly gave me two taels of silver, saying that all the money at home was managed by his mother and that these were savings he and his wife put aside, urging me to use it for Ruozhu’s medical treatment.”

”In fact, I know my sister-in-law’s character, how could they have the chance to hide any private money? I’m afraid that silver was from my nephew’s wife’s dowry. Later, when our family became affluent, I quietly arranged to give them silver, and the person later told me that he didn’t want to accept it initially. He said that his aunt had it hard and repeatedly asked if our family was in trouble, and only accepted it after hearing that we were doing well.” Lin Ping’er spoke while wiping her eyes. ”I couldn’t take much care of him. Later when Dan Dan was born, I sent over a silver lock, hoping it wouldn’t be snatched away by my sister-in-law.”

Wan Caiyue held Lin Ping’er’s hand and gently comforted, ”Mother, please don’t be sad, Elder Cousin and his wife are sensible people, they’ll definitely manage their lives well.”

”With such parents, they can’t escape.” Lin Ping’er said angrily. ”Your younger sister even let them leave happily, which makes me furious.”

Bai Ruozhu felt she couldn’t listen any longer, coughed lightly and walked into the room. Lin Ping’er turned slightly, feeling somewhat embarrassed and sulking, indicating she didn’t want to look at Bai Ruozhu.

”Mother, why can’t you hold your temper? If they mistreat you, shouldn’t I teach them a lesson?” Bai Ruozhu went over and shook her mother’s arm a bit, showing a little coquettishness.

”Yes, Mother, the younger sister has lots of clever tricks, she’ll surely help you vent.” Wan Caiyue said with a smile beside her.

Bai Ruozhu winked at her mother, ”Mother, just wait and see, the time will come when they cry.”

So, two days later, Lin Jiang and Zhang Family arrived again, this time they came crying.

Bai Ruozhu had long instructed the household servants deliberately not to open the door for them, letting them cry and shout outside the main gate for half a day; many people from Mountain Village came as onlookers and figured out the situation.

It turned out they had brought silver home, but before they had time to buy land or enjoy themselves, the silver was stolen by thieves in the night!

”That thief even stole my favorite piece of cloth, so shameless. How can we live with these conditions?” Zhang Family shouted from outside.

Bai Ruozhu quietly gave a thumbs up to Jianqi, as it was Jianqi’s dark guard who did it. Lin Jiang was so smug; let them taste the bitterness of shattered dreams.

After they shouted for a long time, Bai Ruozhu handed the contract to her older brother, whispered something in his ear, and let her brother handle the situation.

She was pregnant now, so it was best not to be around large crowds.

Bai Zehao, feeling pleased with his younger sister’s words, walked to the main gate and said, ”Uncle, Aunt, if your house was robbed, why not report it to the Government Office? Coming to cry here, what’s the use? The villages are quite far apart, we can’t do much to help either.”

”But our land hasn’t been bought, and the silver is gone. Can’t you pity your uncle and give us another hundred taels?” Lin Jiang shamelessly asked.

Bai Zehao’s face turned stern, ”Uncle, silver doesn’t grow on trees. We gave you a hundred taels out of family affection, and you signed a contract guaranteeing you wouldn’t ask for money anymore. How can you backtrack so soon? And if your silver is lost, didn’t you show off upon returning to the village, and that’s why the thieves targeted you?”

Lin Jiang paused, he had indeed drunk and bragged a bit too much that night. He liked to boast, maybe he really said something to the villagers.

The onlookers saw Lin Jiang pause and knew he surely showed off, was that attracting thieves? Consequently, many started pointing fingers at him, thinking he deserved it.

”I didn’t want to be robbed either. You should do some good deeds, surely you won’t watch me starve, right?” Lin Jiang said.

”Uncle, what are you saying? Before we came back, weren’t you living well? Even without that silver, if you work hard with both feet on the ground, life won’t be so bad. How could you say you can’t survive?” Bai Zehao shook his head and said, ”Recently, Turkic forces have been harassing the Northwest; our family donated our assets to the Imperial Court as military funding, and we don’t have much money left. We really can’t continually support you like this.”

This was what Bai Ruozhu had instructed; recently, Turkic forces were constantly harassing the Northwestern border, Bai Ruozhu told him to say this to easily win the favor of the Northwest people.

As for supporting the Emperor in reclaiming power, these unstable court situations hadn’t spread to the village yet, and she didn’t want to elaborate.

”What? Are you out of your mind? You’re worrying about the Imperial Court resisting the Turkic forces? Here you have money but don’t support your kin and even donate everything, you, you...” Lin Jiang’s mouth trembled with anger as if it was his silver that was donated.

Zhang Family suddenly burst into tears, sat to the ground, and slapped it with her hands, ”I can’t live anymore, my own sister treats us like this; she’d rather give money to others and still won’t help us? Why not just drive us to death today!”

”How is it giving to others? If Turkic forces invade and no one contributes, if they reach here, can everyone have good lives? A couple of years ago, the notorious bandits from Batianzhai supported by Turkic forces were uncovered by the Imperial Court. Anyone here remembers Batianzhai went down to massacre villages, right? True Turkic forces would be even more ruthless and shameless,” Bai Zehao loudly said to the villagers.

Many nodded in agreement, saying how frightening the Turkic forces were, while commenting that the Bai Family stood up for justice and the Lin couple simply acted outrageously.

Bai Zehao took out the contract to show everyone, ”Take a look, this is signed and fingerprinted by my uncle and aunt, saying they received a hundred taels from our family to live well and would not ask for money again. We gave them money and gifts a couple of days ago; we’ve treated them fairly. How come we’re at fault?”

At that moment, a nearby guard spoke, ”Losing silver and not reporting to the Government Office, but running to family to cause trouble instead; isn’t this just an excuse to ask for more money?”

Everyone looked at Lin Jiang. There might be some truth to this!

Lin Jiang’s face changed, pointing at the guard’s nose, saying, ”Who let you talk like that? This is slander! Slander! We aren’t refusing to report; if the officers can’t catch the thief, we still have to survive, aren’t we hoping our sister might lend a hand?”

The guard remained expressionless, saying, ”Such an obvious thing, anyone can see through it. Instead of stirring trouble, wouldn’t it be faster to report to the Government Office? Maybe that hundred taels can still be found.”

Hehehe, this was, of course, taught by the young lady, but he wouldn’t mention it openly.
