Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1711: 1711 Chapter: Facing Optimistically

Bai Ruozhu quietly took two steps back, thinking she’d better stay away in case the commotion got her caught up. After all, she had done her part, and at least Xu Huilin was in a better condition than Lai Shun. As for Lai Shun, it was just his bad luck. Why did he have to insist on responsibility, only to hurt Zhanna’s self-esteem?

Zhanna got even angrier and struck harder, among Lai Shun’s howls of anguish, there was a crack, and the thorn stick broke in two.

She threw the thorn stick to the ground in frustration and kicked at Lai Shun again. Lai Shun cried out and quickly grabbed her foot, saying, ”Miss, be careful of your prosthetic leg, don’t damage it.”

Zhanna was so angry she was trembling all over, shouting, ”This is my real leg!”

She yanked her foot back with force, only to see an embroidered shoe being snatched off by Lai Shun. Her leg was retrieved, but the embroidered shoe was still in Lai Shun’s hand.

”You pervert!” Zhanna was completely outraged. What was this? Touching her thigh and stealing her embroidered shoe? If she were a Danliang woman, she might have only been able to throw herself into the Well to end it all.

Lai Shun, holding the embroidered shoe, was dumbfounded. He threw it away like it was a hot potato and hurriedly explained, ”I really didn’t do it on purpose this time.”

”Then you did it on purpose before!” Zhanna said through gritted teeth. She quickly put on the embroidered shoe, turned, and ran off.

Bai Ruozhu was already trying to stifle her laughter so hard it made her stomach hurt. When Zhanna ran away, she finally let it out, but seeing Xu Huilin looking over, she had to put on a serious face again.

”If you want to see prosthetic limbs, you should tell me. You can’t fool around like this again, otherwise how can the Bai Family keep you?” Bai Ruozhu said with a stern face.

Xu Huilin smiled sheepishly, ”It won’t happen again. I was just possessed for a moment. This guy didn’t even try to talk me out of it, just followed along.”

Lai Shun looked bitterly, ”Young Master, you can’t be like this, who am I taking a beating for?”

Xu Huilin rolled his eyes at him and simply ignored him.

Bai Ruozhu found Lai Shun rather amusing. It looked like he was a fun person, which might be why Xu Huilin kept him around.

What he needed now was joy, not endless pity and sympathy.

”Alright, alright, you both go rest. Next time you see Zhanna, speak nicely. You’ve already upset her enough, it’s a good thing she didn’t make you take responsibility.” Bai Ruozhu said.

Lai Shun muttered, ”It’s not that I’m unwilling to take responsibility, it’s her who doesn’t agree.”

Xu Huilin kicked him on the rear, ”Shut up, with your manners, why would a lady marry you? Don’t you know that Zhanna is a famous artist in the Bai Family’s bookshop? Do you think you deserve her?”

”I don’t deserve her, but does Young Master not deserve her either?” Lai Shun retorted.

This choked Xu Huilin, so he kicked him on the rear again, ”Your young master isn’t interested in getting married!”

As the master and servant squabbled and left, Bai Ruozhu stood there thinking carefully about Xu Huilin’s words. He said he didn’t want to marry, showing he still cared about his current situation. Indeed, families with better conditions might not be willing to marry their daughters to him.

Zhanna was actually not bad, but the Meng Family likely wouldn’t agree. This feeling wasn’t about the Meng Family looking down on Zhanna, but they might feel it would wrong Xu Huilin, especially with Xu Huilin having lost an arm and Zhanna a leg under such circumstances.

Quickly, this matter spread throughout the Bai Family, and the servants privately gossiped. Bai Ruozhu, aware of it, instructed Rendong to discipline the servants, quieting the rumors.

It was Lin Peinger who felt sorry for Zhanna, comforted her kindly, and passed a gold hairpin to smooth things over.

Just as the commotion settled, Xu Huilin urged Bai Ruozhu to hurry up with the design of the prosthetic limb, specific for his use.

Bai Ruozhu had no choice but to focus on drawing in the room. As a result, she was the last to know that her big brother had brought back good news.

She hastened to the main hall, just as she heard her big brother enthusiastically say, ”It’s said that quite a few officials and aristocrats managed to leave the Capital City safely. At that time, the military force surrounded the Imperial City, and King Rui’s attention was on the emperor, giving many aristocrats a chance to leave the Capital. Unfortunately, many officials who attended the palace banquet either died or were injured, even more were captured.”

Officials above the fifth-rank and their families could attend the New Year’s Eve palace banquet. How pitiful for these people.

”Big brother, do you know who these people are? Are any of our acquaintances among them?” Bai Ruozhu asked as she hurried into the room.

”The specifics are still unclear, but I know our second brother’s fiancée, Si Yihuan, was among the group that arrived.” Bai Zehao said joyfully, ”Second brother should be relieved now.”

Lin Peinger clasped her hands in prayer, ”Thanks to Buddha for blessing.”

”What about the Prime Minister?” Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but ask. With the Prime Minister’s age and being a civil officer, it would be difficult to evade in the palace chaos, wouldn’t it?

”I heard he suddenly fell ill during the first half of the palace banquet, maybe because he drank cold wine or ate cold dishes due to his age. The emperor immediately ordered people to help him rest and sent him to the Imperial Medical Hospital for treatment, so he escaped the palace chaos and was escorted out of the Imperial Palace by the Golden Guards.” Bai Zehao sighed, ”The Prime Minister is blessed. Otherwise, our second brother’s fiancée would’ve had to mourn for three years, and second brother would’ve had to wait another three years.”

Bai Ruozhu’s eyelid twitched, unsure if she was being overly suspicious or if recent events had been too tumultuous, but she felt the Prime Minister’s illness was too coincidental. Could it be that he deliberately avoided it?

Yet thinking about the Prime Minister’s consistent conduct, she thought it unlikely.

”Tang Feng was also among them. Though he’s a literary Champion, it’s said his martial arts skills aren’t bad. He protected everyone along the way and even knew how to command troops. Some say if he went to the battlefield, he might be an outstanding general.” Bai Zehao said admiringly.

Bai Ruozhu was not too surprised since she always knew Tang Feng’s capabilities, so she never worried about his safety. Even at worse, Tang Feng could escape into space to save himself.

However, with Tang Feng’s pride, he must be very angry this time, being deceived by King Rui.

”The Gu Family’s young lady you’re friendly with was also among them, but Leng Family’s young lady didn’t manage to escape the Capital.” Bai Zehao’s voice lowered. Only after saying it did he realize his wife was glaring at him, and he regretted saying so much. If he hadn’t mentioned Leng Family’s young lady, wouldn’t it have been better, not to upset his sister?

Unexpectedly, Bai Ruozhu’s expression changed but quickly calmed down, saying, ”Wanhua is so smart, even if she can’t escape the Capital, she’ll be fine. I believe in her!”

She had already resolved not to dwell in sadness anymore. Whatever the future may hold, she wanted to think positively and silently pray for her friends.
