Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1729: Chapter 1729: Bringing Up Old Matters

Lin Jiang and Zhang Family’s eyes lit up, just like hungry people who had seen delicious food, Bai Ruozhu shivered under their gaze. Did they have to look at her with such passionate eyes? It was really disgusting!

”But...” She deliberately dragged her voice, and sure enough, Lin Jiang and the other followed her lead, asking, ”But what?”

Bai Ruozhu smiled and said, ”I’ll give you a hundred taels of silver, you can go buy ten acres of land, and the rest you can use to repair your house or something. From then on, you could be considered a well-off family. But our family just donated to the Imperial Court, the silver in our hands is limited. It’s impossible to give you once and then give a second time. I think a hundred taels are already a lot, so if you agree, we should sign an agreement ensuring that after you receive the hundred taels, you won’t ask our family for money again.”

Lin Jiang and Zhang Family exchanged looks, both somewhat hesitant.

Bai Ruozhu felt cold sweat in her heart, indeed, they were insatiable.

”What’s the matter, are you still thinking of constantly asking my mother for money?” Bai Zehao, feeling he couldn’t stand it anymore, wouldn’t even want to give them a hundred taels if it wasn’t for his sister’s idea. He definitely didn’t want to let them off so easily.

”If you disagree, then don’t take the hundred taels of silver either, make a quick decision. I’m pregnant and easily fatigued. If I leave, no one here will give you any money.” Bai Ruozhu said with a big yawn, which was not a very elegant move for a woman, but when she did it, it seemed both lazy and dignified, making Zhang Family envious.

Lin Jiang gritted his teeth, ”Fine, let’s do as you say, I’ll sign!”

A hundred taels of silver was enough for them to spend for quite some time. Worst case, they could come back and cry poverty later. Even if there was an agreement, his own sister wouldn’t let him die, right? Lin Jiang thought smugly.

Bai Ruozhu asked someone to bring paper and a pen and quickly wrote up a contract. At this moment, Lin Xue walked in out of curiosity. Seeing her cousin’s excellent handwriting, she felt both envious and jealous, wondering why she didn’t have such good luck.

Bai Ruozhu handed the contract to Lin Xue, ”You studied, why don’t you read it out to your parents? They can always trust you.”

Lin Xue took the paper and read it in a delicate voice, acting as if she was some sort of impressive literary figure.

”Lin Jiang, after receiving the silver, shall not seek money from Lin Pinger’s family again. If there should be...” Lin Xue stuttered as she read, her little face turning bright red.

Bai Ruozhu glanced over, sneaking a laugh at her inability to recognize the words ”entanglement.” And she wanted to marry her second brother?

”Entanglement,” she whispered to remind her.

Lin Xue continued reading with a flushed face and muttered afterward, ”Did you deliberately use such an uncommon word to humiliate me?”

”I really didn’t know your literacy level wasn’t up to par, my apologies for not considering your dignity,” Bai Ruozhu replied with a smile.

”You!” Lin Xue burst into tears.

Bai Ruozhu ignored her, signaling Lin Jiang and Zhang Family to sign and mark their fingerprints to receive the silver.

Lin Jiang and Zhang Family were reluctant to sign, hesitated for a long time before Zhang Family hesitantly said, ”We, we haven’t seen the silver yet.”

Lin Pinger felt utterly embarrassed, wondering how she had such a brother and sister-in-law.

Bai Ruozhu looked at Bai Zehao, ”Brother, please get some cash.”

She feared Lin Jiang’s couple wouldn’t recognize silver banknotes, so it would be best to give them silver ingots.

Bai Zehao quickly returned with a bag of silver.

Lin Jiang and Zhang Family’s eyes shone green, they eagerly signed the contract and sealed it with their fingerprints, thereafter Lin Jiang hugged the silver to his chest, biting each one to confirm authenticity, finally revealing a satisfied smile.

”Huang Qin, instruct the steward to prepare a cart for my uncle, load it with extra gifts; proper etiquette is needed for their visit.” Bai Ruozhu added.

”Oh, Ruozhu, you really are considerate, thank you,” Zhang Family said with a face full of joy.

Lin Pinger was even angrier, unable to stop herself from glaring at her own daughter, when had she become so agreeable?

Bai Ruozhu continued to smile, knowing full well that she wouldn’t let them take advantage without consequence. It was all about letting them taste the joy of gaining, followed by the pain of loss.

So, when Lin Jiang’s family left, they pushed a cart loaded with gifts, attracting a lot of attention from the Village.

No need to ask, everyone knew it was gifts from Bai Family, and many praised Bai Family for being generous to relatives. But soon news spread that Lin Family’s couple had caused a scene at Bai Family demanding money, so much so that their two sons ran off, leaving Bai Family with no choice but to give them a hundred taels of silver.

”Tsk tsk, a hundred taels of silver, Bai Family is indeed generous.”

”What else could they do, can relatives really afford to turn hostile?”

”I just fear it’s a bottomless pit.”

The people speaking glanced at each other, such stories were not unheard of.

Back at Bai Family’s mansion, Lin Pinger was stewing in anger, Wan Caiyue brought Chenxi to console her, which eventually lightened her mood.

Bai Zehao and Bai Ruozhu were speaking outside, Bai Zehao, puzzled, asked, ”Does little sister intend to spend money to ward off disaster?”

Bai Ruozhu winked at her brother, ”It’s just about letting them experience the taste of gaining and then losing.”

Inside, Lin Pinger and Wan Caiyue were sharing heartfelt words, and as she spoke, tears brimmed in Lin Pinger’s eyes.

”Caiyue, dear, you mustn’t laugh, but my brother and sister-in-law are truly awful! Before my father passed away, he specially prepared dowry silver for me, and handed it to me personally at my bedside. After he passed, my brother claimed he would keep the dowry for me, worrying that as a young girl, I wouldn’t mange silver well. He promised to save more for me so I could marry in glory. Being young and naive, I handed it to him trustingly, thinking I had only one brother.”

Lin Pinger sighed, ”I later realized, my father personally gave me the dowry for he foresaw my brother’s nature. When it came time for my marriage, my brother didn’t give me the dowry, only preparing some simple pieces. When I confronted him, he claimed taking too much dowry would attract my mother-in-law to seize it, saying it was safest kept in my family for rainy days, it was clear I wouldn’t get it back, so I accepted it.”

”Years later, whenever I visited home, he still wouldn’t return the silver. I grew tired of arguing. Later, when our family faced difficulties, and Ruozhu fell seriously ill, I went to ask for my own money, but they chased me out with harsh words, and even insulted Ruozhu. It was then I truly hated them, and promised myself never to deal with them again in my life.”
