Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 1706: Chapter 1706: He Who Hid in the Capital City

”Chengyu, how could you...” Guizhi gritted her teeth in anger. She trusted the clever and sensible Chengyu immensely, even gave her fifty more taels of silver, and shared her plans to leave with Chengyu alone.

Wei San’s heart sank slowly; it seemed they wouldn’t escape today. Whether they would be captured by the Imperial Dragon Guards or executed on the spot was uncertain. Unfortunately, he hadn’t had the chance to marry her yet.

The maid named Chengyu wore a mocking smile, saying, ”What, disappointed? But you’ve disappointed me too.”

Guizhi furiously said, ”Where have I treated you badly? Arranging a marriage for you, ensuring you’ll become the manager’s wife one day, giving you the highest monthly allowance, why can’t you be content?”

Chengyu laughed loudly, pointing at her, ”Short-sighted village woman, look at the marriage you’ve arranged for me, to marry the manor manager’s son? Isn’t that just following them to farm? Luckily, I’m with Mr. Feng. My future will naturally be like that of a lady.”

Guizhi followed her gaze, which landed on the leader of the Imperial Dragon Guards who were capturing them.

”Will he marry you as his first wife? A concubine calling herself like a lady, isn’t that shameless!” Guizhi mocked with laughter. After speaking, she glanced at Wei San, her eyes slowly filled with guilt.

”Wei San, I dragged you into this, find a chance to leave, don’t mind me.” She quickly whispered in a lowered voice.

Wei San frowned, ”Even if it means death, I won’t abandon you.”

Feng Zhizhuan laughed loudly, ”What a pair of doomed lovebirds, catch them for me!”

As he commanded, several Imperial Dragon Guards lunged towards the two. Guizhi closed her eyes in fright.

”Ah...”

A miserable scream arose, Guizhi shivered, but soon realized the sound wasn’t from Wei San. She hurriedly opened her eyes, and in front of her, a group of roughly dressed people were battling with the Imperial Dragon Guards.

”We’re saved, we’re saved.” Wei San said, somewhat excited as he embraced Fang Guizhi. They wouldn’t die here.

At that moment, an elder jumped beside them, throwing them onto a nearby black horse, shouting loudly, ”What are you standing around for? Hurry up and leave!”

He slapped the horse’s hindquarters, and the horse neighed and quickly galloped forward.

Guizhi held tightly onto Wei San’s waist in front of her, and Wei San grasped the reins, racing forward desperately.

”Is it Ruozhu’s master? Will they be okay?” Guizhi asked, worried.

Wei San inhaled a mouthful of cold wind, but he smiled, saying, ”They’ll be fine. Didn’t you see the Imperial Dragon Guards beaten like dogs? Also, your maid was killed by that senior with a sword.”

”Chengyu...” Guizhi felt a pang of compassion, but she wasn’t a soft-hearted pushover. Chengyu’s end was deserved.

”I can’t quite understand how Chengyu could ride a horse.” Guizhi muttered, and Wei San also found it strange, but the urgency was to escape. He couldn’t afford to ponder too much, after all, that Chengyu was already dead.

Behind them, Lin Zhenghui led people to slay several Imperial Dragon Guards, but the fight had alerted the city’s guards. With Lin Zhenghui’s command, he led everyone away quickly.

The Imperial Dragon Guards that came for support searched the surrounding area but did not find traces of Lin Zhenghui and others.

In a mansion within the Capital City, Lin Zhenghui spoke to a person in the shadow, ”As an old man, running errands for you, brat; do I owe you this?”

The person in the shadow rose, revealing an impeccably handsome face, though its contours were sharper, as if chiseled by a knife.

Looking at Jiang Yichun’s gaunt face, Lin Zhenghui felt a pang of heartache, thinking this lad had it tough too.

Jiang Yichun offered Lin Zhenghui a cup of tea, saying solemnly, ”That’s Ruozhu’s sworn sister. If anything happens, Ruozhu would be heartbroken. But the Shadow Guards and I can’t be exposed yet, so I had to trouble you. Your disciple’s sister is your younger generation, isn’t she?”

Lin Zhenghui drained the tea he was handed, waving his hand, ”I understand, but I’ve been exposed along with my men, so I’ll have to hide for now and can’t help you. But I won’t go too far, signal me when you have needs.”

Jiang Yichun nodded, ”Be cautious of those under the Deputy Leader.”

”Sigh!” Lin Zhenghui heavily sighed, knowing the Deputy Leader from Xiaojiang’s words referred to Zuo Jiang, who supported King Rui’s rebellion.

After Lin Zhenghui left, Jiang Yichun also relocated with his people, vanishing into various corners of the Capital City. Though he couldn’t come forward, he needed to secretly save people or hide them away.

...

Bai Ruozhu rested at home for three days before recovering. On the morning of the fourth day, their entire family brought gifts for Maple Leaves Village.

The people in Mountain Village watched their grand horse carriage with envy, claiming the Bai Family’s ancestral tomb was blessed, with their grand mansion and horse carriage, rivaling those of county officials.

However, some whispered behind their backs regarding Bai Yihong’s household’s estrangement from the old mansion. Some called Bai Yihong unfilial, others claimed Bai Fu’s family lacked proper conduct, avoiding close contact with good families.

Previously, during the ancestor worship, Bai Yihong’s family visited Fengye Village, but Bai Ruozhu wasn’t present then, so this time, it seemed like the whole family accompanied her to meet Bai Lu and others.

Bai Lu took quite a liking to Bai Ruozhu, excitedly saying, ”Among your generation, the most outstanding isn’t your second brother, but you, this little girl. Let’s see who dares look down on women in the future! Thanks to you, daughters of the Bai Family won’t struggle to marry; every day many people come to propose.”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help laughing, feeling comfortable not because she was praised, but because the clan leader grandpa’s words were genuine.

Recently, she heard from the Jin Family about Bai Lianhe’s good marriage, partly because her brother Bai Zeji passed the scholar exam, and a newly appointed candidate brother in their clan, along with a female officer cousin. Many wanted to marry Bai Family daughters.

The two chatted for half a day, and someone lamented, ”If only Bai Yibo behaved, his Bai Ruolan could have married well. What a pity.”

The room fell silent instantly, Bai Lu frowned but couldn’t resist asking, ”How’s Ruolan doing?”

Bai Ruozhu felt a tug at her heart, ”She ran away twice halfway when my parents took her. Easily stimulated, they had to send her back to her familiar yard, asking Uncle Zhang to care for her.”

Bai Lu and others were unaware of the Capital City’s turmoil and weren’t too worried, moving past the topic. However, Bai Ruozhu felt deeply troubled, knowing even Achun reached the Capital, rescuing Ruolan was tough due to Ruolan’s complex situation.

Hopefully, King Rui won’t notice someone as insignificant as a sick person.
