Chapter 1583: Chapter 1583: Turning a Joyous Occasion into a Funeral_1

However, Bai Ruozhu soon felt that she had oversimplified things, there was still the death of Jiang Xuerui between them, and it would be very difficult for Jiang Yichun to forgive Elder Jiang Ge.

Perhaps because Elder Jiang Ge was relatively polite and was giving face to Jiang Zhihe, Jiang Yichun did not pick a quarrel and even responded to Elder Jiang Ge a couple of times.

After paying her respects to Elder Jiang Ge, Bai Ruozhu hurried to help Jiang Zhihe with her makeup, bringing over the set of agate headwear and jade beaded necklace, bracelet, and ring that she and Jiang Yichun had prepared for her.

”Sister-in-law, this gift is too generous, one set would have been enough,” Jiang Zhihe said, somewhat flustered, hesitating to even reach out for the gift boxes.

Bai Ruozhu gestured to Jiang Zhihe’s bridal maid, who quickly looked at Jiang Zhihe, and seeing no nod of approval, the maid did not dare to step forward.

”Oh, you’ve trained your maid well, not even giving face to your big sister-in-law,” Bai Ruozhu joked, then stuffed the items into Jiang Zhihe’s arms, ”Take them, you’ve also had a hard time these years when your eldest brother and I weren’t at home. With more dowry, your life will become easier.”

Jiang Zhihe could only accept the two gift boxes, her eyes reddening slightly as she said, ”Sister-in-law, I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t come back.”

Bai Ruozhu patted her on the head, comforting her, ”Don’t think too much, life will get better and better. Just think, after today, you’ll be married into the Yu Family. There, no one will impose rules on you, and you’ll have your carefree and comfortable life.”

”Especially without so many of the Jiang Family’s strict rules to bind you,” Bai Ruozhu whispered with a mischievous smile.

Jiang Zhihe, though slightly embarrassed, had bright eyes filled with expectation.

”Sister-in-law, how about I learn business from you later? My husband’s family doesn’t need me to take care of the elderly and children so I might as well learn something. My mother gave me a shop, but I don’t understand it at all; I feel quite useless, knowing only poetry, literature, and etiquette,” Jiang Zhihe said with some dejection. Elder Jiang Ge’s expectations for the children of the family were to study and know the proper rites, and he didn’t allow Jiang Zhihe to be involved in other matters, fearing it would dishonor the family traditions.

”Of course, I could actually use a helping hand,” Bai Ruozhu immediately agreed, and even if she didn’t have the time, she could have the manager teach Jiang Zhihe. Jiang Zhihe had a good temperament, was sensible and grateful; Bai Ruozhu was truly willing to help her.

Jiang Zhihe laughed, ”Thank you, sister-in-law.”

That evening, Bai Ruozhu and Jiang Yichun stayed at the Jiang Residence. The night passed without incident, and at the break of dawn, Bai Ruozhu got up.

”I’m going to help Zhihe get ready, you sleep a little longer,” Bai Ruozhu said, patting the arm Jiang Yichun was pulling her with.

Jiang Yichun laughed and pulled her into his embrace, murmuring softly, ”Ruozhu, thank you.”

Thank you for being so good to me and for being so good to my family members.

With an endearing smile, Bai Ruozhu said, ”Thank me for what? In a little while, when my second brother gets married, you’ll also have to help with the welcoming party, and you’ll be busy too.”

Jiang Yichun laughed, let go of her, and let her go.

The whole morning went very smoothly. The makeup that Bai Ruozhu applied to Jiang Zhihe was much better than the ridiculous look the matchmaker had created. Jiang Zhihe, looking at her clear reflection in the Western mirror, could hardly believe it and asked, ”Is this really me?”

With a laugh, Bai Ruozhu replied, ”How could it not be? After today, big sister will teach you how to do your makeup, and I guarantee you’ll look beautiful every day.”

Jiang Zhihe nodded with a smile, ”Then it’s a deal.”

Soon enough, those who came to convey their congratulations arrived, and outside the Main Gate of the Jiang Residence, large red firecrackers were hung, just waiting for the bridegroom to come and fetch the bride to set them off.

Outside, someone in the crowd who was watching the fun called out, ”The bridegroom officer is about to arrive, riding a spirited tall horse, quite a dashing young man!”

The onlookers burst into laughter, and the Jiang Family’s maids hurriedly distributed wedding candy to the people outside, creating a very lively scene.

Just as the bridegroom officer was nearing, suddenly two ragged individuals rushed over and plopped themselves down on the steps at the Jiang Family Main Gate, then began to wail loudly.

”Where did these beggars come from? Don’t disturb someone’s wedding, it’s outrageous!” some people commented, pointing and talking.

But the doormen of the Jiang Family and the maids distributing candy were all stunned; weren’t those two ”beggars” their Cousin Master and the Cousin Mistress?

”What beggars? We are relatives of the Jiang Family. I am the biological nephew of Elder Jiang Ge, having served the Jiang Family for more than twenty years, only to be kicked out by Jiang Xuexiang once he took over. He himself is marrying off his daughter in such splendor, yet he has us relatives begging in the streets—is this fair?” Dou Ning said, wiping away tears, a pitiful sight to behold.

Dou Mistress also cried out, ”For over twenty years my husband has managed the miscellaneous affairs of the Jiang Family, neglecting his own matters, all because he admired and respected his uncle deeply from his heart. But now that we’re old, the Jiang Family has turned us away. Were all these years of our efforts in vain?”

The onlookers, who had originally come for amusement, had not expected such a scene at the Jiang Family’s daughter’s wedding, and many began muttering and discussing among themselves.

The doormen frantically reported the situation to the people in the Main Hall. Upon hearing this, Elder Jiang Ge slammed his hand down on the table furiously, shouting, ”After all these years, I’ve been raising an ingrate! If he has any complaints, let him take them out on me; why must he make a scene at his own niece’s wedding, he has no conscience!”

”Dad, don’t be angry, let me go out and try to persuade them,” said Jiang Xuexiang, equally enraged, but in order to keep his father from damaging his health, he had to suppress his anger.

”Don’t go; they’ve already lost all shame, you won’t be able to talk them down. You’re marrying off your daughter today; you mustn’t let this become a laughingstock for others,” said Elder Jiang Ge, heaving a heavy sigh, ”I must have been blind to have raised such people for decades, and now they turn around to harm my granddaughter.”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but roll her eyes, thinking to herself, so you finally see clearly—what took you so long?

Unexpectedly, Elder Jiang Ge also rolled his eyes, then fell backward.

The maids in charge were thrown into chaos, rushing to help the unconscious Elder Jiang Ge to a Side Room.

”Ruozhu, please check on your grandpa quickly,” urged Jiang Xuexiang anxiously.

Bai Ruozhu felt his pulse and said, ”Grandpa is fine; he was just overtaken by a fit of rage. Let him stay unconscious for now, lest he gets angry all over again once he wakes.”

Everyone had no choice but to accept the situation, and then another servant came running with more news, turning everyone’s expressions even more unsightly.

”The bridal procession has already reached the Main Gate, but Cousin Master and Cousin Mistress are lying at the gate, refusing to let the bridegroom in. They say if the Master doesn’t give them an explanation today, they would rather die than move aside. They also say they’re about to starve to death anyway; if the Jiang Family is so heartless and unrighteous, they’ll just kill themselves at the gate, letting, letting...”

”Spit it out already!” Jiang Mistress snapped irritably.

Quivering, the servant stammered, ”They’re also saying, let the Jiang Family’s celebration turn to mourning, see how the Second Miss can still get married.”
