Chapter 1572: Chapter 1572: Pervasive Strangeness_1

Jiang Yichun saw her talking to Furball and couldn’t help but pause, asking, ”Can it be sure it’s not a trap?”

Bai Ruozhu pursed her lips, ”It’s as excited as anything, and its intelligence is probably not even on par with Dengdeng’s, how can it make such a judgment?”

Laughter from Xiaohei and Dengdeng could already be heard in the distance. Jiang Yichun turned his head towards Dengdeng’s direction and yelled, ”You little brat, you’ve run too far, stand still for me!”

Bai Ruozhu also hurriedly touched Furball and chased after Little Dengdeng’s direction, oblivious to the fact that once Little Dengdeng was out the door, he would become uncontrollably wild. Boys always possess a spirit of adventure.

As a result, as she ran, Furball suddenly jumped down on its own, turning into a flash of white light as it sped away!

Bai Ruozhu was stunned for a moment, then immediately caught up with Jiang Yichun and said, ”Furball has run off; I need to go see. You take half the people to watch over Dengdeng and Xiaohei, while I take Jianqi and the other half to follow and check.”

He grabbed her arm, ”Don’t go, what if it’s a trap?”

Bai Ruozhu shook her head, ”If it’s a trap, I can’t just watch Furball get into trouble. It has saved your life, mine, and Dengdeng’s.”

Jiang Yichun was taken aback, but his hand refused to let go, ”I’ll go with you, and let Morning Breeze and Muyu protect Dengdeng.”

”No way!” Bai Ruozhu immediately objected, ”If the enemy’s aim is to draw us apart, it would be too dangerous for Dengdeng without you there. You must watch him. I will be back quickly, don’t forget that I have the ability to protect myself, and I’ve learned some magic techniques, I’ll be fine.”

Jiang Yichun looked at Jianqi, ”Send a signal immediately if there’s any situation.”

”Yes, sir, don’t worry,” Jianqi briskly replied.

The decision made, Bai Ruozhu summoned her lightness skill and pursued in the direction Furball had left. Having fed Furball her own blood, a subtle connection had been established between them; although she couldn’t see Furball, she could sense its direction.

She led her people in the chase, only to discover that Furball had gone up the mountain – the same mountain where the National Master’s master was buried.

Soon, she saw the National Master’s gravestone, yet the guards who were supposed to watch the tomb were nowhere to be seen. Bai Ruozhu grew suspicious, uncertain if they had sneakily run off to rest elsewhere or if something had happened to the guards.

Logically, the guards at the tomb should be on a rotating shift; if anybody was in trouble, the Capital would quickly notice.

With doubts in her heart, she heightened her vigilance, her fingers secretly making the gestures of a spell.

She walked past the National Master’s tomb and continued toward the deeper parts of the Back Mountain. Jianqi couldn’t help but warn from behind, ”Master, something is odd here, should we send a message to the Capital?”

Bai Ruozhu raised her hand, ”Let’s see first, be careful everyone, prioritize your own safety if anything unusual happens.”

The dark guards nodded and formed a protective half-encirclement around Bai Ruozhu.

Their pace had slowed considerably; after walking like this for almost quarter of an hour, Bai Ruozhu suddenly realized she could no longer feel Furball’s presence!

A shock went through her heart. Before she could utter a word, the ground beneath her feet gave way, and she plummeted down.

”Ah...”

Anyone falling from a height would involuntarily cry out in horror; the sensation was too thrilling!

Jianqi and the others reacted, reaching out to grab her, but they only managed to tear off a piece of Bai Ruozhu’s clothing. The most eerie part was that the patch of earth from which Bai Ruozhu had fallen sealed back up as if nothing had happened.

”Dig fast!” Jianqi shouted.

A few of them rushed forward, frantically using their swords to dig, but after unearthing a lot of soil and making the pit very deep, they found no sign of any cave or secret passage.

Just as Jianqi was about to go mad with urgency, crooked and slanted words suddenly emerged on the ground.

”She’s unharmed, wait quietly.”

The handwriting was ugly and barely decipherable, but it was pervaded by an eerie sense.

”Our master is in the hands of the other party, we must not act rashly, wait for news first,” Jianqi ordered gravely.

Bai Ruozhu was screaming miserably, and unconsciously shut her eyes tight, only after what felt like an eternity when she sensed a solid ground beneath her feet did she slowly open her eyes, and then realized she was still screaming, embarrassed, she closed her mouth.

She patted her chest, ”Luckily, I didn’t fall to my death.”

Yet it felt like such a high fall, and she was unscathed, which was bizarre, right?

Moreover, she had felt something pulling at her. She looked around and seemed to be in a deep cave in the mountains.

”Who was that just now? What brings you to pull me here?” Bai Ruozhu asked coldly.

Suddenly, a figure appeared at the end of the cave ahead, appearing abruptly and illuminated by the cave’s candlelight casting a strange glow on his face, Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but scream again.

”Mommy, a ghost!”

The man’s beard quivered, and he pressed his forehead, saying, ”Girl, stop shouting, has it been so long that you don’t recognize me anymore?”

Bai Ruozhu then saw the man’s face clearly, she quickly stepped forward, asking in surprise, ”Elder Shougu, what are you doing here? Was it you who pulled me here?”

Elder Shougu obviously preferred the calm version of Bai Ruozhu, and he chuckled while stroking his white beard, saying, ”It was my poisonous insect that brought you here; it has the ability to travel several hundred miles in an instant through soil.”

”Then why did you pull me here? Why be so secretive?” Bai Ruozhu was somewhat confused; she thought Elder Shougu was incredibly formidable, even the Furballs he casually gave away were so powerful, and then a poisonous insect had dragged her underground – why all this secrecy?

Elder Shougu’s face showed a hint of shame, ”Even I have moments of disaster in a ditch. I was captured before, and the other party threatened me to produce a poisonous insect immune to all toxins. Seeing his malicious intentions, I covertly gave him a vicious poisonous insect that I had caught from an evil Gu master. The insect is potent; indeed, it makes one immune to all poisons and even reduces the sensation of pain. But soon after, it causes the internal organs to shift position, and then the insect devours the host’s organs, leading to death.”

”I’m no saint; when my life was threatened, giving him a small ’gift’ was already being polite. However, that person has exceptional talents, he not only survived but also reared the insect. That bug is formidable; it restrains all of my insects within his body, and I’ve shot myself in the foot. Thankfully, the insect’s presence causes severe pain in his internal organs, and he can’t fully use the insect’s power, otherwise, his sole capability would suffice to slaughter an entire city’s population.”

At this point, Bai Ruozhu understood, ”You’re talking about Li Yi, no, he now calls himself Prince Saihan!”

Elder Shougu nodded, ”He wants to find a way to control the insect, so he has been capturing me repeatedly, and I’ve suffered serious injuries as a result, constantly hiding and missing encounters with you several times. He recently entered your Capital City, so I couldn’t go there. The moment I appear near him, his insect can sense my location.”
