Chapter 1569: Chapter 1569: The Urge to Kill_1

Bai Ruozhu’s eyes widened. Yes, at that time, they directly killed Wu Wanqing, leaving not the slightest mercy—so why would she have any reason to ask His Majesty to be lenient?

If she were in the Emperor’s position, she probably would have used such thunderous methods as well, right?

At that moment, wails came from the distance. Jiang Yichun’s complexion changed, ”You should hurry to Cining Palace, don’t look at these things.”

After he finished speaking, he took her and headed for the Cining Palace, with the wails disturbing her peace of mind from behind.

Jiang Yichun escorted her to Cining Palace and, after giving her a couple of instructions, left to attend to his duties.

Bai Ruozhu stopped a palace maid and asked, ”What’s going on with those crying and shouting people?”

The little palace maid trembled with fear, ”They... they seem to be taken to be beheaded.”

Bai Ruozhu’s heart couldn’t bear it, and she walked out towards the source of the wailing until she arrived at the execution ground.

Many palace maids and eunuchs were ordered to witness the execution, and she blended in without attracting any attention.

She saw a line of guilty eunuchs and palace maids with their hands bound behind their backs, kneeling on the ground. Some were devastated, waiting for death, while others were crying, saying they didn’t want to die.

Bai Ruozhu looked around and recognized many palace maids she had seen serving Consort Xu, who was now bound to the execution rack, the only person standing in the field, immobile with both her hands and feet tied to the pillar behind her.

However, Consort Xu was not struggling at that moment. She didn’t even want to move her eyes, just staring lifelessly at the ground as if her soul was already lost.

Bai Ruozhu stared at Consort Xu, wanting to know if she was indeed such a greedy person, to know whether she had really committed regicide, or if her headache treatment for Consort Xu had always been a plot, and she was fooled as well.

Unfortunately, Consort Xu showed no reaction at all, leaving Bai Ruozhu unable to make sense of it.

After a while, the official from the Department of Precautionary Punishment appeared, as he was to oversee the execution today.

He waved his hand and said loudly, ”The condemned woman, Mrs. Xu, plotted against the Emperor and is sentenced to death by lingering execution. Carry out the execution!”

The executioner sharpened his knife and made a cut while shouting, ”To Heaven!”

Then suddenly, the knife sliced from Consort Xu’s head and he shouted, ”Blindfolds!”

Flesh fell and covered Consort Xu’s eyes, which had already lost their spirit. Bai Ruozhu couldn’t see her gaze, but she heard Consort Xu’s piercing screams. It was so quiet all around that it seemed even the drop of a needle to the ground could be heard, with only Consort Xu’s agonizing screams lingering in the air.

Many looked down, no longer willing to watch, and some of the more timid palace maids began to cry, but fearing to break the rules, they all held back their tears, making only muted sobbing sounds.

Bai Ruozhu felt as though her vision was shrouded in blood. She couldn’t bear to watch any longer. So this was how cruel a lingering death sentence was, and this was just the beginning!

She began to step back involuntarily, but Consort Xu’s screams and the executioner’s continuous count still reached her ears.

Finally, she moved away from the execution ground and fled as though running away, only to unexpectedly encounter someone familiar after a few steps.

Consort Lv stood there, watching her with a cold, mocking smile, her expression extremely eerie.

”Why are you running away, Director Bai? Consort Xu has been brought to this state because of you, don’t you think you should see her off on her final journey?” Consort Lv said, with a strange and mocking tone.

”What did you say?” Bai Ruozhu charged over, only to be stopped by Consort Lv’s maids.

Consort Lv let out a laugh uglier than crying and said, ”If it weren’t for you making that bet, I wouldn’t have been poisoned, and I certainly wouldn’t have lost my life. So, it’s only right that I send you a grand gift. You helped Lady Xu treat her illness, which won her the opportunity to serve the Emperor in bed, so naturally, I couldn’t overlook her.”

”So it was you causing trouble, but what can a mere consort do? Who’s behind you? Prince Duan?” Bai Ruozhu quickly calmed down, but her heart twisted as if being cut by a knife. She wanted to turn back to stop the execution, but Lady Xu’s screams had abruptly ended, and from afar came the executioner’s voice filled with self-reproach, ”Please forgive me, my lord, I was useless, I couldn’t stop her from biting her own tongue and committing suicide.”

Everything was too late, but even if there had been time, how could she prove what Consort Lv had just said? She certainly didn’t have a recorder!

”Why do you need to know so much?” Consort Lv chuckled merrily, as if exceedingly happy, ”Don’t you want to know why she confessed?”

Bai Ruozhu wished she could rush forward and fiercely slap Consort Lv a few times, but she had to listen to what she would say.

”Her parents are in our hands; she willingly chose death. But I told her it was because I hate you, and therefore I wanted to harm you by getting rid of her. Do you think she will hate you to her death?” Consort Lv said, bursting into loud laughter.

Cold Light shot from Bai Ruozhu’s eyes, which had already turned bloodshot. She knew she should capture Consort Lv for a good interrogation, but she could no longer restrain herself, she wanted to make Consort Lv live in worse agony than death!

With a thought, a bottle of Drug Powder appeared at her fingertips, and with a slight movement of her fingers, the powder drifted onto Consort Lv and her maid.

However, Bai Ruozhu quickly suppressed her anger, sneering as she said, ”You say these things believing I have no witness or evidence, right? Unfortunately, having the Emperor’s trust is enough. I’ll go to report to the Emperor right now and see what end you will meet.”

After she finished speaking, she shook off the hand of Consort Lv’s maid and strode forward.

Consort Lv snorted with laughter and said to her maid, ”Let her go. She can’t even explain herself. Come on, I’m tired; let’s go back to the Palace.”

The maid supported Consort Lv as they leisurely returned to Hanlu Palace.

Consort Lv glanced at the West Hall where Lady Xu once lived and said with a grin blooming like flowers, ”It’s nice that it’s a little more spacious here now.”

”Consort Lv Your Highness is more sagacious than others, and those who understand the times are outstanding. My lord will surely not mistreat you,” Consort Lv’s maid whispered in a low voice.

...

After walking a distance away, Bai Ruozhu did not go to find the Emperor but instead searched everywhere for Jiang Yichun. She had no evidence to report to the Emperor, and since she had already dealt with Consort Lv and her maid, there was no need for reports; after today, no one would know she had met Consort Lv.

It’s just a pity that no one knew of Lady Xu’s injustice, that no one knew she had implicated an innocent woman.

Tears began to line her eyes, and eventually, she found Jiang Yichun near the Sky Prison.

”How did you get out?” Jiang Yichun frowned, raising his hand to wipe the tear stains from her face, ”Did you go to the execution ground?”

Bai Ruozhu couldn’t hold back anymore and burst into his arms, sobbing, ”I know everything now, Lady Xu was framed by Consort Lv, but I have no evidence, and even if I report it to the Emperor, he will not believe me. You still have time to secretly interrogate Consort Lv and her maid.”

She spoke with diminishing sobs, her voice suppressed to the lowest, ”They must die, you only have one day.”

”How do you know? No one saw you meet with Consort Lv, right?” Jiang Yichun nervously checked the surroundings, ”You can’t just act recklessly in the Palace, you’ve been too rash!”

His worry made his tone sound harsh; feeling irritated and conflicted, she angrily shook off his hand, ”All you think about is how rash I am, but people are dying unjustly. Is it my rashness or your arbitrariness?”
