Chapter 1537: Chapter 1537 Tell You Plotting Against Her_1

By the time Bai Ruozhu returned to the private room, Jianqi was nearly unable to sit still. Gao Zhou waved his hand and said, ”No more drinking, no more drinking, I’m about to get drunk. Come on, let’s go, I’ll escort you back, so those damned pups won’t bother you again.”

Perceiving the strong protective tone in his voice, Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but smile delightedly. ”If we really encounter them, will senior use his fan to send people flying again?”

”The fan is almost broken, next time I’ll throw a silver ingot, I’m not short on money,” boasted Gao Zhou with a swagger.

Bai Ruozhu raised an eyebrow, feeling an extraordinary rapport with Gao Zhou, but something seemed a bit off?

She immediately called Muyu to help Jianqi, then followed Gao Zhou downstairs.

This was the first time Muyu had seen the usually stoic Jianqi acting like a drunken fool. Muyu couldn’t help but laugh, only to be stepped on harshly right after. He almost cried out in pain.

He turned to look at Jianqi. Was this guy actually drunk, or was he deliberately taking revenge?

After watching for a while without being able to decide, Muyu really wanted to sneakily get back at him, but recalling Jianqi’s usual cold face, he honestly retracted his claws.

Gao Zhou escorted Bai Ruozhu and her entourage to the Bai Residence Gate. Bai Ruozhu invited him to come inside for a visit, but he quickly waved his hand and said, ”I have a business appointment this afternoon, and it wouldn’t look good if I’m late. We businessmen must keep our word, mustn’t we? I’ll pay a visit another day.”

After saying that, he seemed in such a hurry, dashing off like a wisp of smoke.

Muyu watched Gao Zhou’s retreating figure and mumbled, ”Seems like the senior is really in a rush.”

Bai Ruozhu felt that even though Muyu was quite the joker, what he said was pretty accurate; Gao Zhou did indeed look very anxious.

No sooner had Bai Ruozhu stepped through the door than an imperial eunuch with a summons arrived.

”By the gracious command of the Empress Dowager, Lady Liu in the palace has suddenly been stricken with a strange illness, her condition accuses Chief Doctor Bai of the Bai family of plotting against her life; therefore, summoning Bai to the palace for a confrontation,” announced the eunuch in a conspiratorial voice.

Bai Ruozhu narrowed her eyes; that Lady Liu truly despised her. Unable to lash out at the time, she must have sought ways to frame her afterwards.

”Chief Doctor Bai, you’d better come with me for this matter. Quite a few people witnessed your conflict with Lady Liu during the banquet that evening. I’m afraid it will be difficult for you to dissociate yourself from the blame,” urged the eunuch.

Hastily, Bai Ruozhu handed him a purse, ”Please lead the way, eunuch. Should there be any developments, I hope you could inform me in greater detail.”

The eunuch bearing the summons was not of high status within the palace; otherwise, who would be willing to run errands in this scorching summer heat?

Weighing the purse, his eyes suddenly lit up. He thought that Bai certainly had a good sense of judgement and perhaps he should indeed give her a few more tips.

”Chief Bai, let’s talk while walking, and make sure not to be late,” the eunuch’s tone improved considerably.

By now, Jianqi was almost sober but still carried the smell of alcohol, so it was not suitable for him to enter the palace. Bai Ruozhu instructed him to go back and rest well, as she would take Muyu with her to the palace today.

On the way, the eunuch elaborated in detail, ”Lady Liu seems seriously ill. I glanced at her from a distance; her face was all green, looking quite frightening. She’s been adamantly accusing you, Chief Bai, of harming her. You ought to think carefully about how to clear your name. The Empress Dowager has also heard the news, saying that we cannot rely solely on Lady Liu’s words. The Empress stated that the matter must be handled impartially and if it’s unrelated to you, it will clear your name.”

Bai Ruozhu nodded as she listened, ”Thank you, Eunuch, for the reminder.”

While the Empress appeared to be handling things justly, there were undoubtedly some things here that seemed unfavorable to her, after all, because she and the Empress Dowager were close; it was natural for the Empress to dislike her.

”Does Eunuch know when Lady Liu visited the Emperor that day, and when she left?” Bai Ruozhu asked softly.

The eunuch’s face held back a trace of a smile, and his voice lowered a few notches, ”Lady Bai is unaware, but that day the Emperor did not call for Lady Liu at all. After she went, the Emperor scolded her and punished her to return and copy Buddhist scriptures under house arrest. Lady Liu insisted that a Little Eunuch from Yangxin Hall had brought the Emperor’s decree. As for whether it’s true or false, I have no idea.”

Bai Ruozhu recalled Lady Liu’s arrogant manner that day, and despite hating her to death, she still endured it to meet with the Emperor. It was clear she indeed responded to the summons, fearing she would be late, and it wasn’t something she had concocted.

Thinking this way, had Lady Liu been played by someone? But how could it just so happen to involve her? Was it possible that someone had set this up for her?

Soon upon entering the Palace, the eunuch led the way to Liuyun Hall where Liu Xiyu resided. Bai Ruozhu gave him another purse in thanks for the reminder he had given earlier. The eunuch, very pleased, accepted it and said in a low voice, ”Lady Bai, if I hear any new news, I will be sure to come and tell you.”

That’s why having money makes things so much easier.

Upon entering Liuyun Hall, Bai Ruozhu saw the Empress sitting in the main seat. She respectfully saluted, and the Empress had her rise, saying, ”Chief Female Doctor Bai, Lady Liu accuses you of plotting against her life. Do you have any evidence to prove your innocence?”

Bai Ruozhu smiled, ”In any case, convicting someone requires complete evidence and testimony. I was temporarily summoned to the banquet that day, unaware of it beforehand. After the banquet ended, I left the Palace with my husband and went nowhere else. How could I have specially targeted Lady Liu? I only exchanged a few words with Lady Liu when we happened to meet, and she hurriedly left. How could I have had the opportunity to harm her? But does Lady Liu have any solid evidence?”

The Empress spoke calmly, ”The palace maids around Lady Liu all saw you having a quarrel with her, and since you are skilled with medicine, Lady Liu suspects that you secretly gave her poison.”

After hearing this, Bai Ruozhu scoffed, ”I didn’t even touch her, how could I have tampered with her? Does Lady Liu think I’m an Immortal?”

Anyway, she would never admit to being able to poison someone from afar. Even if there were such claims, as long as she didn’t admit it, it was fine, because not everyone had access to such methods.

”Otherwise, you go first to see Lady Liu’s condition, see if you can treat her. If her illness recovers, her grievances might lessen, and perhaps this matter can be nicely resolved,” the Empress said with the air of a peacemaker.

Bai Ruozhu didn’t believe it was that simple. If the Empress had truly wanted to play the peacemaker from the start, she would have just summoned Bai Ruozhu to come and treat Lady Liu from the beginning.

But since the Empress wanted to put on a performance, she had to play along.

Following the Empress to the inner room, Bai Ruozhu finally saw the extremely weak Lady Liu, with a face indeed as green as the summoning eunuch had described.

”You are the one who harmed me. I... I won’t let you off. It must be you who poisoned me, otherwise how could I fall ill when I have always been sturdy?” At this moment, Lady Liu had lost her usual arrogance, her voice soft, which added a touch of frailty to her.

It was just unfortunate that her face was too green. Otherwise, she could have been seen as a pitiable sick beauty.
