Return of the Antagonistic Lady Boss

Chapter 634: Chapter 608: Aloofness and Depression

Qian initially thought this was just a regular call from someone in a bad mood, but when she heard the little girl say she hadn’t slept for three days, she immediately focused her attention.

”Little sister, have you encountered anything unpleasant recently?”

”Not really anything special, but my mood has been very heavy. I try hard to make myself fall asleep every day, but no matter how I count sheep with my eyes closed in bed, it doesn’t help. Even taking medicine doesn’t work...”

Qian knew right away that this wasn’t like the emotional garbage she encountered on her show.

”Apart from this, do you have any other unusual symptoms?”

”Nothing really unusual, perhaps there is... but I don’t want to say.”

Insomnia + reluctance to talk about her sadness, or rather, not knowing where to start, these two signs already gave Qian a bit of a hunch.

”Is there anything that makes you happy? How’s your appetite?” she continued to ask.

”I don’t know what’s wrong with me, things that used to make me happy seem to have disappeared in an instant, and the foods I used to like eating all don’t appeal to me anymore. The doctor gave me medicine, but I still can’t sleep.”

No interests, no appetite, insomnia, reluctance to confide in anyone, a bleak outlook on the future, low self-evaluation...

The hunch in Qian’s mind became clearer.

”Do you have any wishes you want to fulfill?”

”I have no wishes... oh, no, I do! Actually, I just wanted to call and congratulate you. I’ve always felt out of place in this world, but your show is the only thing I can feel. I want to personally congratulate you on your marriage. After doing this, I have no regrets; after all, I have nothing left to do, so I won’t bother you with this hotline.”

No wishes at all...

”Sister, tell me your name.”

”I—” The little girl hesitated.

”Tell me, Meiwei wants to know.”

”My name is Weiwei.”

Qian was stunned.

Weiwei, Weiwei, it sounds like her daughter’s name.

When Qian closed her eyes, she seemed to hear her daughter talking to her again.

Mom, please help her.

Qian opened her eyes, and something else was in them. She couldn’t just do nothing.

”Don’t hang up yet. Tell the producer your contact details, and I’ll call you personally after the show. Remember, no matter how difficult things seem now, you still have Meiwei.”

”Thank you, Meiwei, but... it’s too late. Getting up is too exhausting, I just want to lie down for a while.”

Wow! The host is giving her number!

This explosive news made many listeners excited. Although they didn’t know why this conversation would prompt the usually aloof Meiwei to give out her number, it was enough to surprise people.

Meiwei has always been popular, and combined with her low profile, many listeners wanted to know what she was like. Some even thought of ways to get her contact information, but the station kept it exceptionally secret.

Previously, other listeners had wanted her contact information, which Qian had deftly deflected. But today, she gave her number voluntarily!

The following callers probably also wanted Qian’s contact information, but the show had only a few minutes left, and Qian was now focused on that little girl. She had to reach her quickly.

She immediately cut the program and played music.

Real depression is very apparent to a psychologist, and trying to fake it is impossible.

After the show, Qian couldn’t wait to ask the producer for the contact information.

”That little girl, she didn’t leave it; she hung up directly.”

”Check, check the call records from where she called.”

The producer immediately started checking, curiously asking.

”This is the first time I’ve seen you like this, why?” He leafed through the records.

”Because her situation is different from other callers; she needs me.”

”I used to think you were quite aloof, is it because you’re getting married that you’ve become a warm big sister?” The producer found the number and began to write it down.

”Being aloof doesn’t conflict with being a good doctor.”

When the child said the only thing that resonated with her was Qian’s show and that calling Qian left her with no regrets, Qian’s sense of duty as a doctor compelled her to immediately find this little girl.

”Here you go! It’s the first time I’ve heard someone admit they’re aloof...” The producer remarked as Qian took the number and hurried out, puzzled.

Qian was too occupied to speak with her. She immediately dialed the number. It was a landline, and it rang for a long time with no answer. Relentlessly, Qian dialed three times before someone picked up.

”In the middle of the night, what are you doing? Can’t you let people sleep?”

An agitated man answered, seemingly just woken up.

”Is there a little girl named Weiwei in your house?”

”None of your business! It’s the middle of the night, and you’re calling like a lunatic!” The man’s etiquette was lacking, his sleep interrupted, he was emotionally out of control, and his words were unclean.

”Go to her room immediately and see what she’s doing. I’m the host of the broadcast station’s night talk show, Meiwei. This child just called the hotline, and I feel she’s not okay. She likely has depression, and this is a critical time for her, go check on her immediately!”

”Ah!” The man was fully awake, didn’t even speak to Qian again, and the phone was left aside without being hung up.

Qian could hear the sound of slippers dragging on the floor and the knocking on the door, accompanied by the man’s repeated calls.

”Weiwei! Open the door!”

The man received no response. Then Qian heard him shouting again.

”A Zhi! Get the key!”

A middle-aged woman’s impatient voice, accompanied by yawning, sounded, ”How annoying, over and over endlessly. If she wants to die, let her die already, she’s keeping everyone up.”

Qian felt her anger rising. Is this her biological mother?

How can someone be so impatient with a patient suffering from depression?

The door finally opened, and then came the man’s gasp.

”Weiwei! Quickly! Call an ambulance!”

”Oh no, the child really took the medication, this is causing such a commotion in the middle of the night. Let’s drive there...”

”Shut up! Call the ambulance!!!”

Then Qian heard hurried footsteps; a woman’s voice grew closer, seemingly muttering to herself. The man, busy saving the unknown condition of the little girl, didn’t hear the woman’s voice, but Qian did.

”Always yelling about wanting to die. If you want to die, then just do it! I’m so sick of this; calling an ambulance isn’t free; go find your short-lived mother and stop bothering me sooner...”

Oh... a stepmother, or some relative, but definitely not a biological mother.

Qian understood; she thought a biological mother shouldn’t be so cruel.

”Why isn’t this phone hung up! It’s driving me crazy!” The woman snapped it off, and Qian didn’t know what happened next.

It was already the early hours, past midnight when the show ended, and Qian looked at the clock, still feeling unsettled.

Just as she was about to call Mr. Liu, Mr. Liu’s call came through.
