Return of the Antagonistic Lady Boss

Chapter 560: Chapter 534: Insomnia and Professor Liu’s Passion

The human voice tends to change somewhat through radio transmission, especially when Meiwei is hosting, her voice is quieter than others, slightly louder than a whisper.

Amplified, this voice gives people a particularly comforting feeling, really hard to associate it with Chen Xiaoqian’s usual image.

The girl who recognized Xiaoqian’s voice was particularly sensitive to sounds, and being a fan of Chen Xiaoqian, she paid extra attention, which is how she figured it out.

”It couldn’t be, how could a superstar work as a radio host? Maybe you heard wrong?”

”Maybe I did hear wrong. After winning the competition, weren’t hospitals scrambling to sign her? How could she be on the radio then...”

A few girls whispered about the local celebrity, who at that moment was sitting in the studio, wearing headphones, answering listeners’ calls into the microphone at her lips.

Usually, broadcasters have a script, but on the white paper spread before her, apart from a simple record of listeners’ inquiries, her hand would doodle cartoons as she responded to questions.

This made the producer watching her through the glass admire her immensely.

Broadcasting outward were soul-soothing voices and sharp insights, but who could guess that Meiwei, the popular host, was passing her time by drawing one cartoon after another?

It felt like this impressive new host could multitask perfectly; while answering questions, she relentlessly doodled, and the producer cooperated with Meiwei very well, understanding her patterns.

If you want to know Meiwei’s mood, just see what she’s drawing.

If her doodles are of upright Huskies, deep-looking Huskies, Huskies in military hats, Huskies sprinting in the wind, then it would indicate that Meiwei is in a good mood today.

But if the doodles are a mess, like Huskies tied up with stockings like dumplings, Huskies being whipped, Huskies tickled with feathers, Huskies being...

If it’s something like that, Meiwei is definitely not in a good mood, unwilling to say a word after the show, and answering listeners’ questions with a fiery attitude; anyone calling should brace themselves.

The most amazing thing is, those who get roasted by Meiwei have a sort of epiphany, feeling their worldview reshaped, and even thank her for it.

She timed it perfectly, finishing a Husky drawing just as the 40-minute show was ending, her drawing skills increasingly refined.

The producer glanced over, and it seemed Meiwei wasn’t in a great mood today; she drew a Husky hit by a watermelon, with the watermelon humorously perched on its head, the poor pup sticking its tongue out.

Inside, Meiwei finished answering a listener’s question, put down her pen, and signaled okay to the producer, indicating to switch in the next caller.

”Meiwei, my insomnia is really severe. I have to listen to your show to sleep. I wonder what kind of woman could have such an enchanting voice. I wonder if your body is as alluring as your voice. I wonder if slicing open your body would—”

Xiaoqian sensed something wrong with this person and quickly switched to an advertisement.

The producer on the other side of the glass had an expression like she’d just eaten something disgusting.

Clearly, every call is filtered; how could such a harassing call get through? Moreover, this person told the producer he was upset for being scolded by his boss tonight; how did it become such explicit harassment on Meiwei’s end?

Xiaoqian used the ad break to leave the studio, and the producer stood up, apologizing.

”Sorry, Meiwei, this caller wasn’t filtered out properly. Next time, this number will definitely not get through. Should we report it to the police?”

”No worries, this person is not right in the head.” Xiaoqian tapped her own head, knowing that while such incidents aren’t frequent, they’re not unprecedented; always some shameless men around.

However, the recent one seemed particularly off, as he mentioned something about a knife... Xiaoqian was quick with the ad, so maybe the last bit wasn’t heard by other listeners. If it’s harmless harassment just once, Xiaoqian is too lazy to report it; doing so would delay her precious sleep, which has been poor quality lately.

”Meiwei, have you been sleeping poorly lately?” Even the producer noticed Xiaoqian’s lack of sleep.

Xiaoqian hosts a late-night psychology talk, working when everyone else has finished their day, not bothering to remove her makeup, and opting for a bare face.

Which revealed her dark circles.

”Yeah, been dreaming a lot these days.” Xiaoqian thought of the nightmares she had, her brows furrowing slightly.

She had been interning here for a while, but the nightmares started only recently.

Xiaoqian believed her nightmares were related to this annoying internship.

Who knows why she decided to come to such a miserable place to listen to these chaotic mental ramblings!

She thought after winning the international competition, she’d rake in the money by overcharging clients—she’s already started taking gigs, but only earns a couple of thousand per hour, which, despite being more than 80% of her domestic peers’ rates, is far from the wealthy status she desires.

Xiaoqian completed her bachelor’s degree two years ahead of schedule, also earning a counseling certificate; her skill level has already surpassed the top level, but the industry values experience. With a bachelor’s, she can only pursue this level; to become a level two counselor, she needs a master’s degree, and level one requires a doctorate. With just a bachelor’s, she needs years of clinical experience for level two, so she’s not very experienced.

But Xiaoqian has her connections; her good friend Teng Shuixian often brings her affluent clients, Shi Touyu and Zheng Xu introduce clients to her, and even her future stepbrother Liao Fugui provides her with referrals when she earned her license.

Comrade Fugui is an honest fellow; the jobs he refers are of little financial gain, like working-class folks seeking mental evaluations, where the issues aren’t psychiatric but psychological, and Fugui feels pity, referring them to Xiaoqian. These cases Xiaoqian feels bad to charge much for, making symbolic fees of ten to twenty yuan just for phone costs, as if for charity—not doing so isn’t an option. Jia Xiufang, who’s now stable with Mr. Liao, is such a super saint. If she hears someone’s plight, she tears up easily, and if Xiaoqian doesn’t agree to help, she nags constantly.

In summary, whether a wealthy client from a rich friend or a charity referral from her future stepbrother, Xiaoqian only needs a few jobs a month to live comfortably. There’s no real need to come here and endure these mental garbage sounds damaging her ears and compromising her precious sleep.

So why is she sitting here?

There’s only one answer: her mentor, Mr. Liu, has a fiery mentorship for her, fired up with passion!
