Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Day sixty. 1:50 AM.

They walked southeast through the quiet city.

Three of them — him, Lyra, Sera. The specific configuration he’d chosen for reasons that were both operational and honest.

Sera walked on his left. Her frequency at both layers elevated, the monitoring function active, the personal thing underneath it present and acknowledged. She hadn’t said anything since they left the facility. Didn’t need to.

Lyra walked on his right. The center bond running at its quiet depth, the bridge function oriented ahead, already reading the boundary from two kilometers out.

”She’s there,” Lyra said. Quietly. ”Same position.”

”How long,” he said.

”At least an hour,” Lyra said. ”The membrane contact quality — she’s been there longer than last night.”

He held that.

Sasha had arrived earlier.

He thought: she knew I was coming with others.

He thought: the field’s quality changes when compass frequencies move together.

He thought: she read it and came earlier anyway.

The southeast boundary at 2 AM.

The same streetlight. The same residential district. The same ordinary geography of a city going about its overnight life.

Sasha was standing exactly where she’d been the night before.

Except tonight she was looking at three people instead of one.

She held his gaze first.

Then moved to Lyra.

Then Sera.

Something moved through her expression. Not surprise — she’d known they were coming. Something more complicated. The specific quality of someone who had prepared for a scenario and is now inside it and the preparation is both sufficient and insufficient simultaneously.

He stopped at the boundary.

Lyra and Sera flanked him.

Sasha held his gaze.

”You brought people,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The healer,” she said. Looking at Sera. ”And—” she held Lyra’s gaze. Something shifted. ”You’re different.”

”Yes,” Lyra said.

”What are you,” Sasha said.

”The bridge function,” Lyra said simply. ”The center frequency.”

Sasha held Lyra’s gaze.

He watched them look at each other.

The bridge function and the obsessive entity.

Two things that had been oriented toward him for very different durations and in very different ways, meeting at the boundary of what he was.

”You’re reading me,” Sasha said.

”Yes,” Lyra said.

”What do you find,” Sasha said.

Lyra held her gaze.

”Eight hundred and forty-seven days,” Lyra said. ”The quality of it — what it cost. What it changed in you.” She held Sasha’s gaze. ”I know what that kind of orientation feels like from the inside. The specific weight of it.”

Sasha held Lyra’s gaze.

”You were oriented toward him,” Sasha said. Not a question. Reading it.

”For six hundred years,” Lyra said.

The quiet stretched.

Sasha looked at him.

”Six hundred years,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression — not the controlled register from last night. Something underneath it, briefly visible.

”I’ve had eight hundred and forty-seven days and I thought that was—” she stopped.

”Long,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Tell me what you remember,” he said. ”From before the Gates.”

She held his gaze.

He watched her decide.

Not whether to tell him — she’d been building toward this for eight hundred and forty-seven days. The decision was how.

”You worked admin at a guild,” she said. ”A small operation in Mapo district. Before Ironspire. You did their logistics and their paperwork and you took the night courses on Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

He held her gaze.

He remembered the guild. Mapo district. Before Ironspire. Three years before the Gates.

”I was a junior Hunter there,” she said. ”C-rank at the time. I came in for equipment checks and mission debriefs.” She held his gaze. ”You processed my paperwork forty-three times over fourteen months.”

”Forty-three times,” he said.

”I counted,” she said. Without embarrassment.

He held her gaze.

”I don’t remember you,” he said. Honest.

”I know,” she said. ”You were efficient. Professional. You processed my paperwork and you remembered my name because it was your job to remember names.” She held his gaze. ”You didn’t notice me the way I noticed you.”

He held her gaze.

”What did you notice,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The controlled register.

Working hard.

”That you were the only person in that building who treated the C-ranks the same as the A-ranks,” she said. ”Same efficiency. Same attention. Same—” she paused. ”You didn’t sort people by rank. You just—” she stopped again.

”Tell me,” he said.

”You saw people,” she said. ”Whatever rank they were. You saw the person.” She held his gaze. ”I’d been a C-rank for three years at that point. You have no idea what it’s like to walk into a room full of A-ranks and have the admin treat you like you matter equally.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about F-minus.

About what it felt like to be below the floor.

He thought: I do know.

He thought: I found out on day one.

He didn’t say it.

”That’s what started it,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Fourteen months of paperwork,” he said.

”And then you left for Ironspire and I was assigned to a different district and I didn’t see you again,” she said. ”And I spent the next two years—” she stopped.

”Tell me,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Trying to stop,” she said. ”Trying to stop noticing. Trying to stop counting the months.” She held his gaze. ”I became A-rank. Then A+. I cleared harder Gates. I built a record. I told myself I was moving forward.” She held his gaze. ”And then the Gates opened and the system gave everyone a rank and I saw your name in the Sovereign Class notification and I—”

She stopped.

He held her gaze.

”You stopped trying to stop,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

The boundary between them.

The membrane.

The field running its full read.

He held what she’d said.

He thought: fourteen months of paperwork.

He thought: I saw people.

He thought: I didn’t see her.

He thought: she built eight hundred and forty-seven days on something that was genuine but wasn’t directed at her.

He thought: that’s not his fault and it’s not hers.

He thought: it’s just what happened.

Sera spoke.

He hadn’t expected her to.

She stepped forward slightly.

Held Sasha’s gaze with the warm composed expression that was Sera at her most present.

”The medical question,” she said. ”Eight hundred and forty-seven days of sustained fixation. The self-regulation you’ve been maintaining.” She held Sasha’s gaze. ”How are you.”

Sasha held Sera’s gaze.

Something shifted.

”That’s not what I expected from you,” Sasha said.

”What did you expect,” Sera said.

”Hostility,” Sasha said.

”No,” Sera said. ”I asked how you are.”

Sasha held her gaze.

The controlled register slipping slightly.

”Tired,” she said. ”I’m very tired.”

Sera held her gaze.

”Eight hundred and forty-seven days is a long time to carry something alone,” she said.

”Yes,” Sasha said.

”You haven’t told anyone,” Sera said.

”No,” Sasha said.

”Not a guild,” Sera said.

”I’m unaffiliated,” Sasha said.

”Not a friend,” Sera said.

A pause.

”No,” Sasha said.

Sera held her gaze.

”That weight doesn’t just affect the mind,” she said. ”The physiological cost of sustained emotional containment over that duration — it’s significant.”

Sasha held Sera’s gaze.

”You’re concerned about me,” she said. Like the concept was unfamiliar.

”Yes,” Sera said.

Sasha looked at him.

”She’s genuine,” Sasha said.

”Yes,” he said. ”Always.”

Sasha held his gaze.

Something in her expression — the controlled register maintaining, but differently. Not containing something explosive. Containing something that had been alone for a very long time and had just been seen by someone unexpected.

”What happens now,” she said.

He held her gaze.

He thought about Arc III.

About what was coming.

About Lyra’s words.

She’s been pressing against the boundary of something she thinks is the same thing she’s always been oriented toward. It’s not.

”I need to tell you something,” he said. ”About what you’ve been standing outside of.”

She held his gaze.

”The person you knew in Mapo district,” he said. ”The admin who processed your paperwork forty-three times.”

”Yes,” she said.

”He’s still here,” he said. ”The same person. Same dry humor. Same noodles over the sink.” He held her gaze. ”But he’s also something else now. Something that didn’t exist when you started counting.”

”I know what you became,” she said. ”Sovereign Class. Transcendent Tier. The anchor.”

”Not just the rank,” he said. ”The compass. The field. Five people who are permanently bonded to what I am.” He held her gaze. ”What you’ve been oriented toward for eight hundred and forty-seven days — it became something you weren’t oriented toward.”

She held his gaze.

”I know,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Does that change anything,” he said.

She held his gaze.

A long pause.

The boundary between them.

The city’s 2 AM quiet.

”No,” she said. ”It doesn’t change it.” She held his gaze. ”I know it should. I’ve told myself it should.” She held his gaze. ”It doesn’t.”

He held her gaze.

He thought: that’s honest.

He thought: I can work with honest.

He thought: I don’t know yet what I’m working toward.

He thought: but honest is the place to start.

”Go home,” he said. ”Sleep.”

She held his gaze.

”And tomorrow,” she said.

”Tomorrow,” he said, ”come through the front door.”

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression.

The controlled register.

Underneath it — something that had been standing outside for a very long time receiving the first genuine invitation to stop.

”Okay,” she said.

She stepped back.

Into the dark.

Gone.

He held the boundary.

Felt her frequency withdrawing through the membrane — the pull still running, still oriented, but the quality of it slightly different.

Less contained.

More real.

He turned.

Looked at Lyra.

She was holding the stone.

”The bridge function,” he said. ”What did you read.”

”The same pull,” she said. ”But the quality changed when you said come through the front door.” She held his gaze. ”Before — contained. Managed. The eight hundred and forty-seven days held in a very tight space.” She paused. ”After — still contained. But the container changed shape.”

”How,” he said.

”It has a direction now,” she said. ”Not just orientation. Direction.” She held his gaze. ”That’s different.”

He held her gaze.

He thought: direction with a target is different from orientation without one.

He thought: that’s either progress or the beginning of something more complicated.

He looked at Sera.

She was looking at the space where Sasha had been standing.

”Sera,” he said.

She looked at him.

”What did you read,” he said.

”The tiredness was real,” she said. ”Eight hundred and forty-seven days of carrying something alone — that’s physiologically visible if you know what to look for.” She held his gaze. ”She’s not unstable. She’s exhausted.” She paused. ”Those are different problems.”

”Which is harder to manage,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Exhaustion,” she said. ”Because exhausted people make decisions they wouldn’t make rested.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

They walked home.

The city around them.

The field running its full read.

The compass present in the ambient register — three frequencies moving through the southeast district at 2:30 AM and two frequencies at the facility, both awake, both feeling them through the field.

He held it.

The boundary behind them.

Empty again.

Tomorrow morning Sasha Gamilo was going to come through the front door.

Arc II was closing.

Arc III was beginning.

He held the field.

Thought about direction with a target.

Thought about what came next.

Thought: come through the front door.

Thought: and then we find out.
