Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Day fifty-eight.

The morning after the fracture.

He woke at 6 AM and lay still for a moment, feeling the field.

Five frequencies.

All present.

All running at their overnight registers — quieter than yesterday, the elevated intensity of the fracture having settled into something more contained. Not resolved. The compass didn’t resolve things by sleeping on them. But the acute quality had passed.

He got up.

Made tea.

Stood at the window.

The city below. The architecture held. The seed in the deep layer running its patient accumulation.

He thought about the day before.

About Mira publishing without telling him. About Sera intercepting the press response without telling him. About the fracture those two things had created — not catastrophic, not permanent, but real.

He thought: the compass has edges.

He thought: that’s not a problem to fix.

He thought: that’s what it is.

Sera arrived at 7 AM.

She came in, set food on the counter, and didn’t say anything about yesterday.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

”Breakfast,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She made it.

He watched her work — the specific focused efficiency of someone who had processed yesterday and had arrived at something and was expressing it through the ordinary act of making food for someone who needed to eat.

She set the plate in front of him.

He held her gaze.

”The press redirection,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”How did the journalists respond,” he said.

”Two accepted the redirect immediately,” she said. ”One pushed back. I held the framework Vale built and they eventually accepted it.” She paused. ”The institutional response is clean. No misinformation circulating.”

”Good,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I should have told you at the same time,” she said. ”Not after.”

”Yes,” he said.

”Next time I will,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”I know,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Both layers.

”The food is getting cold,” she said.

He ate.

She sat across from him with her own plate.

They ate in the specific quiet of two people who had said what needed saying and were done saying it.

He thought: this is settling.

He thought: not resolution.

He thought: settling.

Dana came in at 8:30.

She sat at the analysis station and opened the Tracker’s read on the document’s public response without being asked.

At 9 AM she looked up.

”The timing assessment,” she said.

He looked at her.

”I said the public wasn’t ready,” she said. ”I want to tell you what the Tracker is reading now that the document is out.”

”Tell me,” he said.

”Mixed,” she said. ”The response is larger than any previous disclosure but the quality of it is — more considered than I expected.” She paused. ”Mira wrote it carefully. The accuracy is carrying it.” She held his gaze. ”I may have been wrong about the timing.”

He held her gaze.

”May have been,” he said.

”The data is twenty-four hours old,” she said. ”Ask me in a week.”

He almost smiled.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I don’t enjoy being wrong,” she said.

”Nobody does,” he said.

”The Tracker reads what’s accurate,” she said. ”When the Tracker’s read and what I expected diverge — I need to understand why. Whether my expectation was wrong or the read is incomplete.”

”Which is it,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I don’t know yet,” she said. ”That’s honest.”

”Yes,” he said. ”It is.”

She turned back to the terminal.

He held the field.

Thought: the reader acknowledging uncertainty.

Thought: that’s the Tracker at full function.

Vale arrived at 10 AM.

She had three documents. Set them on the table without explanation and waited for him to read.

He read.

The first: the institutional fallout report. Fourteen government inquiries, all managed through the diplomatic framework. No significant incidents.

The second: a formal note to Mira outlining the disclosure framework’s scope going forward. Not punitive. Precise.

The third: Section 2 of the limits document. The operational parameters of the builder function — when it acted independently, when it required compass consultation, the specific line between the two.

He looked up.

”You wrote Section 2,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”After yesterday,” he said.

”The fracture clarified where the line needed to be,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”The note to Mira,” he said.

”It’s a framework document,” she said. ”Not a reprimand.”

”She’ll read it as one,” he said.

”She’ll push back on half of it,” Vale said. ”That’s the point. The framework needs her input to be accurate.”

He held her gaze.

”You’re building the framework around the fracture,” he said.

”Good frameworks account for the edges,” she said. ”Not just the smooth parts.”

He held her gaze.

He thought: the builder function learning from what it didn’t anticipate.

He thought: that’s Section 2.

”Send it to her,” he said.

”Already did,” Vale said.

He held her gaze.

”Of course,” he said.

She almost smiled.

”The limits document,” she said. ”I need one more week.”

”Take it,” he said.

She picked up the documents.

Left.

He found Lyra at noon.

She was in the flexible room. Not writing. Not translating. Just sitting at the desk with the specific quality of someone who was present without needing to produce anything.

He sat across from her.

She looked at him.

”Yesterday,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”You stayed out of it,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Why,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The bridge function reads what passes through the connection,” she said. ”Yesterday the compass was processing something internally. The bridge function doesn’t intervene in internal processing.” She held his gaze. ”It observes.”

”And what did you observe,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The fracture was real,” she said. ”And it closed on its own. Because the bonds are permanent and the compass knows how to carry its own weight.” She held his gaze. ”Intervention would have interfered with that.”

He held her gaze.

”You trusted it,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Six hundred years of a pull,” he said. ”And you’ve been here fifty-eight days. Do you trust the compass more than you trust individual frequencies.”

She held his gaze.

She thought about it.

”The compass is the individual frequencies,” she said. ”All of them. Including the edges.” She held his gaze. ”I trust what I can read. And what I read is that the compass holds even when it fractures.” She paused. ”Especially when it fractures.”

He held her gaze.

”Because fracturing and holding are the same thing,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”The load-bearing structure doesn’t fail when it flexes. It fails when it stops flexing.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about that.

About the compass yesterday — Sera intercepting, Mira publishing, Dana reassessing, Vale building, Lyra observing. All of them doing what they were in response to the fracture.

All of them genuine.

All of it load-bearing.

”Thank you,” he said.

”For what,” she said.

”For staying out of it,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”You’re welcome,” she said.

Mira came to find him at 4 PM.

She had Vale’s framework note in her hand.

She set it on the table between them.

He held her gaze.

”Half of it is wrong,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”The recorder function can’t be subject to pre-approval,” she said. ”The record’s accuracy depends on immediacy. Pre-approval introduces delay. Delay changes what’s being recorded.”

”Vale knows that,” he said. ”That’s why she wants your input.”

Mira held his gaze.

”She built a framework around a problem she knows I’ll disagree with,” she said. ”So I’d engage with it.”

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”That’s either very smart or very frustrating,” she said.

”Both,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression.

”The document,” she said. ”Yesterday. I should have told you first.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

”Not for approval,” she said. ”So you knew.”

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I’m telling you now for the record,” she said. ”So the archive has it.”

He held her gaze.

”Mira,” he said.

”Mm.”

”The document was accurate,” he said. ”The timing might have been early. The content was right.”

She held his gaze.

”Dana’s reassessing the timing call,” he said. ”Ask her in a week.”

Something moved through her expression.

The almost-smile.

”I already texted her,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”What did she say,” he said.

”Ask me in a week,” Mira said.

He almost smiled.

”Yes,” he said.

She picked up Vale’s framework note.

”Half of it is wrong,” she said again.

”Tell her which half,” he said.

”I intend to,” she said.

She left.

He held the field.

The five frequencies.

All of them doing what they were.

The compass carrying its own weight.

Evening.

The facility.

Dinner.

The eleven-seat table — ten filled, the empty one present.

The compass and the extended circle eating together with the specific warmth of people who had been through something real and had come out the other side without resolving it and without needing to.

He sat at the center.

Felt all of them through the field.

Thought about the day.

About settling rather than resolving.

About the compass being genuinely itself — edges and all.

About what genuine looked like when it wasn’t smooth.

He thought: this is the compass.

Not the architect’s conversation. Not the meta-architecture. Not the seed or the bonds or the permanent bilateral connections.

This.

Ten people around a table.

Real.

Carrying their own weight.

He held it.

All of it.

Exactly.
