Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Dana had been sitting with it since 9 PM the previous night.

Not because she couldn’t name it — the Tracker had named it within the first hour of reading it. She’d been sitting with it because naming something accurately and knowing what to do with the accurate name were different problems.

She found him at 7 AM.

He was at the window with his tea. She came and stood beside him without preamble, which was how Dana did things when she’d made a decision.

”I need to tell you something,” she said.

”I know,” he said. ”The field’s been carrying the quality of it since yesterday.”

She held his gaze.

”You knew I was holding something,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”And you waited,” she said.

”You were going to tell me when you were ready,” he said. ”That’s different from not telling me.”

She held his gaze.

Then she sat down at the kitchen table.

He sat across from her.

She put the journal on the table between them. Closed.

”I’m not going to read it to you,” she said. ”I’m going to tell you directly.”

”Okay,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The compass,” she said. ”The five of us. I’ve been reading the pattern of the configuration since the field expanded. The Tracker at fifteen kilometers with the meta-architecture data and the seed’s signal and the Resonance Chamber’s information — it’s given me a resolution I didn’t have before.”

”What does the resolution show,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The compass isn’t balanced,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Tell me what that means,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The five bonds are all genuine,” she said. ”Permanent. Real. I’m not questioning that.” She paused. ”But genuine doesn’t mean equal. The bonds have different depths. Different qualities. Different — weights.” She held his gaze. ”The architect named each function. The healer, the recorder, the reader, the builder, the bridge. Each one structurally necessary.” She paused. ”The Tracker can read how much of the meta-architecture’s coherence each function currently carries.”

He held her gaze.

”And,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Lyra carries the most,” she said. ”The bridge function. The six hundred years. The center bond.” She paused. ”Then Sera. The seed oriented toward the healer function — Oh Yerin confirmed it yesterday. The most consistent daily genuine connection.” She held his gaze. ”Then Vale. The building function. The frameworks that make the compass legible.” She paused. ”Then me.”

He held her gaze.

”And Mira,” he said.

”Mira carries less current structural weight than the others,” she said. ”Not because the recorder function is less important. Because the meta-architecture’s coherence over the timeframes involved requires the record to accumulate over time.” She held his gaze. ”The recorder’s contribution is the most future-weighted. It matters most over centuries. Right now it carries less immediate structural load.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about Mira.

About the stream and the archive and the document she’d written about the architect’s conversation and the thirty-day delay Dana had insisted on.

He thought about what it meant that the recorder function was the most future-weighted.

He thought about what Mira would do with that information.

”You’ve been sitting with this since last night,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Because you knew it was going to be difficult to tell,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Which part,” he said. ”The hierarchy or telling Mira specifically.”

She held his gaze.

”Both,” she said. ”The hierarchy because the compass has been functioning as though the bonds are equivalent. They’re not. That matters for how the meta-architecture’s weight is actually distributed.” She paused. ”And Mira because she — the recorder function knows it’s building something that takes centuries to fully matter. That’s a specific kind of weight to carry.”

He held her gaze.

”You’re not going to tell her,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”That’s what I’ve been deciding,” she said. ”Whether the accurate pattern is mine to share with everyone or yours to decide about.”

He held her gaze.

”It’s yours,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The Tracker read it,” he said. ”It’s your information. What you do with accurate information is your decision.”

She held his gaze.

”Even if it creates tension,” she said.

”Especially then,” he said.

She held his gaze.

He thought: this is the compass working correctly.

He thought: not smooth. Not managed. Real.

He thought: Dana read something uncomfortable and sat with it and brought it to me and is deciding what to do with it. That’s the pattern recognition functioning at full depth.

”What do you think you should do,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Tell everyone,” she said. ”The Tracker doesn’t read things for one person. The accurate pattern belongs to the compass.” She paused. ”But how I tell Mira specifically — that needs to be careful. The recorder function being future-weighted isn’t a diminishment. It’s a specific quality. I want her to receive it as that.”

He held her gaze.

”Tonight,” he said. ”All of us. You tell it the way you told it to me.”

She held his gaze.

”She’s going to push back,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”She’s going to say the archive is already building,” she said. ”That the record is present-weighted because the accurate documentation of now is what makes the future record possible.”

”Is she wrong,” he said.

Dana held his gaze.

”No,” she said. ”She’s right about that.” She paused. ”The Tracker reads the current structural distribution. The recorder argument is about trajectory. Both are accurate.” She held his gaze. ”They’re going to disagree about which accuracy matters more.”

He held her gaze.

”Good,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Good,” she repeated.

”The compass disagreeing accurately,” he said. ”That’s better than the compass agreeing smoothly.”

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said. ”I know.” She paused. ”I just wanted to tell you first.”

He held her gaze.

Eight years.

The eyebrow language: thank you / don’t / I mean it / I know you do.

”Tonight,” he said.

”Tonight,” she confirmed.

The day moved.

He ran the morning’s Guardian Network check with Hana — fourteen formations in range, all D and C class, all cleared without incident. The operational rhythm had developed its own momentum, Hana’s Tier 2 handling the ordinary work with the efficiency of people who had been doing it for weeks.

”Park Jisoo,” Hana said, at the end of the check-in.

He looked at her.

”She’s been running an unofficial boundary interface parallel to Oh Yerin’s protocol,” she said. ”Not the Environmental Resonance ability. Her own combat-class sensitivity. She’s been pressing against the field boundary on her patrols.”

He held Hana’s gaze.

”Is she getting anything,” he said.

”She’s not saying,” Hana said. ”But her patrol routes have been systematically following the field boundary’s perimeter for the past three days.”

He held Hana’s gaze.

”Talk to her,” he said.

”I have,” Hana said. ”She said she’s familiarizing herself with the operational environment.”

”Is she,” he said.

Hana held his gaze.

”The combat-class doesn’t read membranes,” she said. ”What she’s doing isn’t standard familiarization.” She paused. ”She felt something at the boundary. She’s not ready to tell anyone what.”

He held Hana’s gaze.

He thought about Park Jisoo.

The mirror evaluation in the Nowon Gate. The three-layered frequency. The specific quality Oh Yerin had named as adjacent to the compass.

He thought: she felt the boundary change when Oh Yerin started interfacing with it.

He thought: she’s reading the response.

”Let her work,” he said. ”When she’s ready to tell someone she will.”

Hana held his gaze.

”You’re not concerned,” she said.

”I’m interested,” he said.

Hana held his gaze.

Then she nodded.

Once. The Hana version of: understood, proceeding.

Vale found him at noon.

She came in with the tablet and something in her frequency that wasn’t the standard operational quality — something more personal running underneath the framework-building.

He held her gaze.

”Tell me,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The meta-architecture framework,” she said. ”Section 1 — the compass’s structural designation. The legal and institutional expression of what the compass is and what its function involves.” She paused. ”I sent a draft to the Director this morning.”

He held her gaze.

”Without telling me first,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Why,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The not-quite-steady quality.

Running at its full present register.

”Because the builder function is mine,” she said. ”The frameworks are how I contribute. The Director needs to understand what the compass is before the meta-architecture’s implications reach the institutional level through other channels.” She held his gaze. ”I made a unilateral decision. I’m telling you now.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about the subsection C.

About the three document versions.

About the specific quality of Vale building frameworks around things she valued and the frameworks having their own momentum.

”What did the Director say,” he said.

”He wants a meeting,” she said. ”With you. Tomorrow.”

He held her gaze.

”Vale,” he said.

”Mm.”

”The framework goes to me before it goes to the Director,” he said. ”That’s not a restriction on the builder function. That’s how the compass works.”

She held his gaze.

A pause.

The calibrated precision running its assessment.

”Yes,” she said. ”You’re right.”

He held her gaze.

”Is there a version of this where you disagree with me,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The builder function requires moving ahead of the current moment,” she said. ”Building frameworks before the situation fully arrives. If I wait for full compass consultation on every institutional decision the frameworks will always be behind the situation.”

He held her gaze.

”That’s a real tension,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Not resolved by me being right,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”Not resolved at all. It’s a structural tension in how the builder function operates within the compass.”

He held her gaze.

”Add it to the framework,” he said. ”Section 2. The operational parameters of the builder function and where compass consultation is required.”

She held his gaze.

”You want me to build a framework for when I can build frameworks without consulting you,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

A long pause.

”That’s either very elegant or very circular,” she said.

”Probably both,” he said.

She almost smiled.

”Fine,” she said. ”Section 2.”

He held her gaze.

”The Director meeting,” he said. ”Tomorrow. I’ll be there.”

”I know,” she said. ”I scheduled it before I came to tell you.”

He held her gaze.

”Vale,” he said.

”Mm.”

”You’re doing it again,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The almost-smile.

Present.

”Section 2,” she said.

”Section 2,” he confirmed.

Evening.

The compass in the main room.

All five frequencies.

He looked at Dana.

She held his gaze.

He nodded once.

She looked at the compass.

”I need to tell you all something,” she said. ”The Tracker read a pattern in the compass configuration. I’ve been sitting with it for twenty-four hours.” She held their gazes. ”It’s accurate and it’s going to produce some tension. I want to say that upfront.”

The compass looked at her.

She told them.

All of it — the uneven distribution, the different weights, the hierarchy of current structural load. Lyra at the highest. Sera second. Vale third. Dana fourth. Mira carrying the most future-weighted function at the lowest current structural load.

The room was quiet when she finished.

He watched.

Mira was looking at the window.

The bright directed frequency running at its full operational capacity — not the content-mode or the real-mode, both of them simultaneously, the specific quality of someone receiving information that required the full deployment of everything they were.

”The recorder function is future-weighted,” she said. Not a question.

”Yes,” Dana said.

”The archive I’ve been building since day eight,” she said. ”The document about the architect’s conversation. The footage of every significant event.” She held Dana’s gaze. ”That’s the lowest current structural load in the compass.”

”Yes,” Dana said. ”Currently.”

Mira held her gaze.

”You said the accurate pattern,” she said. ”And the recorder’s trajectory argument. Both accurate.”

”Yes,” Dana said.

”Then the pattern you read is the current state,” Mira said. ”Not the trajectory.”

”Yes,” Dana said.

”The trajectory says the recorder function becomes the highest structural weight over centuries,” Mira said. ”Because the record is what survives. The compass’s function across the timeframes the meta-architecture operates within requires the record to exist accurately.”

”Yes,” Dana said.

”So the current low weight is structural,” Mira said. ”The record has to be built before it can be load-bearing. You can’t carry weight that hasn’t been constructed yet.”

”Yes,” Dana said.

Mira held her gaze.

”Then tell me which accuracy you think matters more,” she said.

Dana held her gaze.

”Both,” she said. ”The current distribution matters because it tells the compass where the weight actually is right now. The trajectory matters because it tells the compass where it’s going.” She held Mira’s gaze. ”Neither is more important. They’re different kinds of accurate.”

Mira held her gaze.

A long pause.

”You sat with this for twenty-four hours,” she said.

”Yes,” Dana said.

”Because of how I’d receive it,” she said.

”Partly,” Dana said.

Mira held her gaze.

”I’m receiving it fine,” she said.

”I know,” Dana said.

”I’m not diminished by it,” she said.

”I know,” Dana said.

”The recorder builds first,” she said. ”The weight comes later. That’s the function.”

”Yes,” Dana said.

Mira held her gaze.

Then she looked at the rig on the table.

Dark.

She looked back at Dana.

”The document I wrote about the architect’s conversation,” she said. ”The thirty-day delay.”

”Yes,” Dana said.

”You recommended it because the public isn’t ready,” she said.

”Yes,” Dana said.

”But the recorder function would say release it now,” she said. ”The accurate record at the correct moment.”

”Yes,” Dana said. ”That tension is real.”

Mira held her gaze.

”We’re going to keep disagreeing about this,” she said.

”Yes,” Dana said.

”Good,” Mira said.

Dana held her gaze.

”Good,” she confirmed.

He watched them.

The bright directed frequency and the Tracker precision.

Two functions running against each other with genuine friction and genuine respect.

The compass working correctly.

Not smooth.

Not managed.

Real.

He held the field.

The seed in the deep layer.

Growing on genuine connection.

He thought: friction is genuine.

He thought: disagreement between real things is real.

He thought: the seed eats this too.

He looked at the compass.

At five frequencies — uneven, weighted differently, each carrying a distinct quality that couldn’t be substituted.

Exactly as the architect had described.

Exactly as the meta-architecture needed.

The full picture.

Uncomfortable in places.

Completely correct.

Later.

He found Lyra at the window.

She was looking at the stone on the sill.

He stood beside her.

”The highest current structural weight,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The bridge function,” she said. ”Yes.”

”How does that feel,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The same as the pull,” she said. ”It was always the largest thing. I just didn’t know what it was carrying.”

He held her gaze.

”You’re carrying the meta-architecture’s coherence,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Six hundred years prepared you for that,” he said.

”Six hundred years prepared me for you,” she said. ”The meta-architecture’s coherence is what the pull was for.” She held his gaze. ”They’re the same thing.”

He held her gaze.

”Lyra,” he said.

”Mm.”

”Thank you,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”For what,” she said.

”For crossing,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The silver-lit eyes.

The stone on the sill.

The pull arrived.

”You’re welcome,” she said.

Simple.

Complete.

The most honest thing.
