Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Day fifty-nine. 9 AM.

The system alert reached the Guardian Network at 8:47 AM.

Not through Vale’s notification system — the WGP’s panel network distributed it automatically, every registered Hunter receiving the same alert that had appeared on the compass’s panels two hours earlier.

His phone started at 8:48.

Hana first.

The alert. Sasha Gamilo. I’m reading the full profile now.

Come to the facility, he sent.

Twenty minutes, she sent.

Then Oh Yerin.

The boundary presence. That was her.

Yes, he sent.

I need to tell you what I read, she sent. It’s significant.

Come with Hana, he sent.

Then Park Jisoo.

The alert hit every panel in the Network. Thirty-two Hunters are asking questions. What do I tell them.

He texted Hana: Park Jisoo is handling Network communications. Loop her in.

Hana: > Already done.

He set the phone down.

Looked at the compass.

”The Network received the alert,” he said.

”I saw,” Vale said. Already building something on the tablet.

”Hana and Oh Yerin are coming,” he said. ”Twenty minutes.”

They arrived in eighteen.

Hana came in with the operational efficiency that was her baseline — direct, assessed, ready. Oh Yerin came in with the specific quality of someone who had been awake since before 2 AM processing something she needed to say.

They sat at the table.

The compass around them.

He held the room.

”Oh Yerin,” he said. ”What did you read.”

She held his gaze.

”The three nights of boundary tracking,” she said. ”I’ve been running the Environmental Resonance read on the external frequency data since this morning.” She paused. ”The membrane quality at the southeast boundary — the way the external presence was pressing against it — I told you it was deliberate. Testing the membrane.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I was wrong about what it was testing,” she said.

The room held that.

”Tell me,” he said.

”She wasn’t learning the membrane’s structure,” Oh Yerin said. ”She wasn’t reading the field’s layout or the compass frequencies or any of the information the boundary carries.” She held his gaze. ”She was pressing against the membrane the way someone presses their hand against a window.” She paused. ”Not to learn what’s on the other side. Because it’s the closest she could get to it.”

The room was quiet.

He held that.

”She wasn’t gathering information,” he said.

”No,” Oh Yerin said. ”The membrane contact was — proximity. Just proximity.” She held his gaze. ”Eight hundred and forty-seven days of orientation and the field’s boundary is as close as she’d allowed herself to get.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about what Lyra had said.

Things contained under that kind of pressure for that long don’t stay contained permanently.

He thought about Sasha standing at the boundary pressing her frequency against the membrane like a hand against glass.

He thought: that’s not reconnaissance.

He thought: that’s longing at its most controlled.

He thought: and controlled is the operative word.

”Hana,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The Network,” she said. ”Thirty-two Hunters received the alert. They want operational guidance.”

”What are they asking,” he said.

”Whether Sasha Gamilo is a threat to the anchor,” she said. ”Whether they should be tracking her. Whether she’s to be denied field entry.”

He held Hana’s gaze.

”What did Park Jisoo tell them,” he said.

”Stand by pending anchor guidance,” Hana said.

He held Hana’s gaze.

”Good,” he said. ”Keep that position until I give you something different.”

”Timeline,” she said.

”Today,” he said.

She nodded. Once.

The compass conversation happened after Hana and Oh Yerin left.

He’d asked for it directly.

”Not institutional,” he said. ”Not operational. What each of you actually thinks about Sasha Gamilo and what should happen.”

The compass looked at him.

Sera went first.

”She’s been oriented toward you for eight hundred and forty-seven days,” she said. ”Before the Gates. Before the compass. Before any of us.” She held his gaze. ”The medical assessment says that duration of fixation without outlet or resolution produces one of two outcomes. Either the person develops extraordinary self-regulation — compartmentalizing the fixation and functioning normally around it.” She paused. ”Or they fracture. The containment fails. Everything held for that long comes out at once.”

”Which is she,” he said.

”The three nights at the boundary suggest self-regulation,” she said. ”The choice not to enter. The withdrawal when you told her to leave.” She held his gaze. ”But self-regulation isn’t stability. It’s managed instability.”

”What do you want to happen,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Both layers.

”I want her monitored,” she said. ”Closely. Medically. Not because I’m threatened.” She held his gaze. ”Because eight hundred and forty-seven days of that is a weight that damages people. Whatever she is to you or to this situation — as a healer I don’t want to watch someone fracture when monitoring could have prevented it.”

He held her gaze.

”That’s genuine,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”It is.”

He looked at Mira.

”The record,” Mira said. ”Eight hundred and forty-seven days predating the Gates. The system generating a new alert category. The boundary contact.” She held his gaze. ”This is significant. Whatever happens with Sasha Gamilo — it’s part of the story.”

”What do you want to happen,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I want to understand what she is,” she said. ”Not institutionally. Not medically. What she actually is in the context of this.” She held his gaze. ”The recorder function doesn’t editorialize. But I want enough information to record accurately.”

”And personally,” he said.

She held his gaze.

A pause.

”Personally I want to know if the eight hundred and forty-seven days is what it looks like,” she said. ”Because if it is—” she stopped.

”If it is,” he said.

”Then she’s been carrying something heavier than anyone I’ve documented,” she said. ”And that deserves accurate recording.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

Dana had the journal open.

”The Tracker’s assessment,” she said. ”The frequency pattern of someone who has held orientation for that long without resolution — I’ve been building the category since this morning.” She held his gaze. ”What I want to happen is to get within direct read range.”

”That’s the operational want,” he said. ”What do you want personally.”

She held his gaze.

”I want to know if she knew you the way I knew you,” she said. ”Before the Gates. The ordinary years.” She held his gaze. ”Because if she was in those years and you never noticed her — that tells me something specific about what she was carrying.”

He held her gaze.

”What does it tell you,” he said.

”That she loved someone who didn’t see her,” she said. ”And kept loving them anyway.” She held his gaze. ”That’s a different kind of weight than loving someone who sees you back.”

He held her gaze.

The Tracker reading the pattern all the way down.

”Yes,” he said.

Vale had the preliminary assessment document on the table.

”The framework,” she said. ”The protocol I’m building requires a classification for Sasha Gamilo that doesn’t currently exist.” She held his gaze. ”Not threat. Not ally. Not compass. Not extended circle.” She paused. ”The framework needs a new category.”

”What do you want to call it,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Unknown,” she said. ”Until we have sufficient data to classify accurately.”

”What do you want to happen,” he said. ”Personally.”

She held his gaze.

The not-quite-steady quality.

”I want her classified,” she said. ”Accurately. As soon as possible.” She held his gaze. ”Unknown is the correct current classification. It’s also the one I find most uncomfortable.”

”Because you build frameworks for known things,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”Unknown variables don’t have frameworks. They have protocols for gathering information.” She held his gaze. ”I want enough information to build the framework.”

”And then,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”And then the framework tells us what to do,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Vale,” he said.

”Mm.”

”The framework doesn’t always tell you what to do,” he said.

She held his gaze.

A long pause.

”No,” she said. ”Sometimes it just tells you what you’re dealing with.”

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”That’s enough for now,” she said.

He looked at Lyra.

She was at the window.

The stone in her hand.

She turned.

”The bridge function,” she said. ”The quality of Sasha’s frequency at the boundary.” She held his gaze. ”Eight hundred and forty-seven days of orientation toward a version of you that predates the Gates.”

”Yes,” he said.

”What do I want to happen,” she said. Not a question. She was gathering the answer.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I want her to find out that what she’s been oriented toward changed,” she said. ”Not disappeared. Changed.” She held his gaze. ”The person she knew before the Gates — that person became this. The compass. The anchor. The field.” She held his gaze. ”She’s been pressing against the boundary of something she thinks is the same thing she’s always been oriented toward.”

”And it’s not,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”It’s larger. Different. More.” She held his gaze. ”I want her to understand what she’s actually standing outside of.”

He held her gaze.

”Why,” he said.

She held the stone.

”Because I stood outside something for six hundred years without understanding what it was,” she said. ”When I finally understood — everything changed.” She held his gaze. ”Not the pull. The pull was always right. But what the pull was for — understanding that changed everything.”

He held her gaze.

”You want her to have that,” he said.

”I want her to have accurate information,” she said. ”What she does with it is hers.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about five people who had just told him what they actually wanted.

Not one of them had said keep her away.

Not one of them had said she’s not a threat, ignore her.

The compass sitting in the uncomfortable middle — concerned, watching, wanting to understand, wanting to monitor, wanting to record, wanting to classify, wanting her to understand what she was standing outside.

He thought: that’s the genuine response.

He thought: not managed. Real.

He held the compass.

”Tonight,” he said. ”If she comes back to the boundary — I’m going again.”

The room held that.

”Alone,” Sera said.

”No,” he said. ”Not alone.”

She held his gaze.

”Who,” she said.

He held the compass’s gazes.

”Lyra,” he said. ”The bridge function needs direct range on her frequency.”

Lyra held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said.

Sera held his gaze.

Both layers.

”And me,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Sera—” he started.

”The medical assessment requires direct observation,” she said. ”I can’t build an accurate profile from secondhand data.” She held his gaze. ”I’m not asking. I’m stating the operational requirement.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about the managed instability.

About what it meant to bring the healer function to a boundary where something that had been contained for eight hundred and forty-seven days was standing on the other side.

He thought: Sera is right about the operational requirement.

He thought: she’s also carrying something personal about this that has nothing to do with the medical assessment.

He thought: both things are true.

”You come,” he said. ”Both of you.”

Sera held his gaze.

The almost-smile.

Not completing.

”Good,” she said.

The rest of the day.

The facility running its operations.

Vale building the unknown classification protocol.

Dana building the frequency pattern category.

Mira opening a new section in the archive.

Hana coordinating the Network’s standing-by position.

Oh Yerin running additional boundary analysis on the three nights of tracking data.

Kim Taehyun texting at 3 PM: the context document is progressing. Dana’s pattern reads are helping.

Dr. Yeon texting at 4 PM: the Layer 8 theoretical framework has a new section. The Sasha Gamilo alert has dimensional implications she wanted to flag.

He read Dr. Yeon’s message twice.

Dimensional implications.

He filed it.

Would address it tomorrow.

Tonight first.

He held the field.

The southeast boundary.

Empty now.

1:45 AM was eight hours away.

He thought about what Lyra had said.

She’s been pressing against the boundary of something she thinks is the same thing she’s always been oriented toward. It’s not. It’s larger. Different. More.

He thought about eight hundred and forty-seven days.

He thought about a girl who had loved someone ordinary.

And what she was going to find when she came back to the boundary.

Was no longer ordinary.

Had never been going to stay ordinary.

He thought: that’s the conversation we’re going to have tonight.

He thought: I don’t know how she receives it.

He thought: I don’t know what comes after.

He thought: that’s Arc III.

He held the field.

The compass.

The seed.

The boundary.

Eight hours.

Counting.
