Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Day fifty-eight. 2 AM.

He was awake.

Not from the field — the compass was at its overnight registers, all five frequencies in their sleep quality, the ambient read quiet. Not from a panel notification or a Guardian Network alert.

From something at the edge.

He lay still and listened to it.

The field’s fifteen-kilometer radius — the city inside it running its overnight operations, reduced frequency, the specific texture of eight million people mostly asleep. Natural Gates breathing quietly at their formation sites. The Guardian Network’s overnight rotation running their standard patrols.

And at the boundary.

Something outside it.

He sat up.

Held the Dimensional Sight’s read on the field’s perimeter.

The boundary — the membrane quality Oh Yerin had identified, the seven micro-layers running their ambient function — was doing something it hadn’t done before.

Responding.

Not to a Gate formation. Not to a natural dimensional exchange. To a presence outside the radius that was pressing against the boundary from the exterior.

Gently.

Deliberately.

He held the read.

The presence outside the field was — he tried to classify it through the Dimensional Sight and found the classification incomplete. Hunter frequency. Definitely. The crystalline sharpness of someone registered in the WGP system. But underneath that — something else. A quality he didn’t have a category for yet.

He texted Oh Yerin.

Something at the field boundary. External. Can you read it from your location.

Her reply came in three minutes. She’d been awake.

Yes. I’ve been feeling it for two hours. I didn’t want to wake you.

What is it, he sent.

A Hunter frequency pressing against the boundary from outside, she sent. Not aggressive. Not trying to enter. Just — touching it. Testing the membrane quality.

From which direction, he sent.

Southeast. Consistent position. It hasn’t moved in two hours.

He held the phone.

Southeast.

He pulled up the field’s topographic read through the Dimensional Sight.

Southeast boundary. The membrane quality at that point running its standard function — but the external pressure producing a response in the micro-layers. The same response Oh Yerin had described when she interfaced with the boundary from the interior.

Something outside the field was reading it.

The way Oh Yerin read it.

From the other side.

Has it done this before, he sent.

Oh Yerin’s reply took longer this time.

Three days, she sent. Same position. Same time. Between 1 and 3 AM. I’ve been tracking it since day fifty-five but I wasn’t sure what I was reading.

He held the phone.

Three days.

He thought: since before the fracture.

He thought: since before Kang Mirae’s visit.

He thought: something has been reading the field’s boundary at 2 AM for three days and nobody told me.

He texted Hana.

Southeast boundary. Something external. You have overnight patrols in that range.

Hana’s reply was immediate. She was always awake for the overnight rotation.

I know. I’ve been tracking it for two days. No threat indicators. No Gate formation. Just a stationary Hunter frequency at the fifteen-kilometer mark. A pause. I didn’t report it because it wasn’t generating any operational flags.

He held the phone.

He thought: Hana didn’t report it because it wasn’t operational.

He thought: Oh Yerin didn’t report it because she wasn’t sure what she was reading.

He thought: something has been at the field’s boundary for three nights and the two people most equipped to read it made independent decisions not to tell me.

He texted both of them: Report everything at the boundary. Always. Regardless of threat level.

Hana: > Understood.

Oh Yerin: > Yes.

He set the phone down.

Held the Dimensional Sight’s read on the southeast boundary.

The presence outside it.

Still there.

He thought about what Oh Yerin had said.

Testing the membrane quality.

He thought: someone outside the field is reading the boundary the way Oh Yerin reads it from the interior.

He thought: Environmental Resonance type ability.

He thought: or something else that reads membranes.

He thought: three nights. Same position. 2 AM.

He thought: whoever this is — they’re not trying to enter.

He thought: they’re learning the field.

He didn’t wake the compass.

He considered it — held the field’s read, felt the five frequencies in their sleep registers, thought about whether this required immediate response.

It didn’t.

The presence wasn’t threatening. Wasn’t entering. Wasn’t producing any quality that the Dimensional Sight flagged as hostile.

But it was deliberate.

He held that.

Deliberate without hostile was its own category.

He lay back down.

Kept the Dimensional Sight running at its ambient level, the southeast boundary visible at the edge of his awareness.

The presence pressed gently against the membrane.

He felt it.

He thought: you’ve been here three nights.

He thought: you know I’m awake.

He thought: the field’s ambient read changes when the anchor is awake. Any frequency that’s been reading the boundary for three nights knows that.

He thought: you know I can feel you.

He held the boundary.

The presence held the other side.

He thought: then we both know.

He thought: okay.

He thought: come back tomorrow night if you want.

He thought: I’ll be awake.

At 3 AM the presence withdrew.

Not suddenly — gradually, the pressure against the membrane releasing over ten minutes, the deliberate quality of something that had decided it was done for the night and was leaving on its own terms.

He held the boundary until it was gone.

Then he closed the Dimensional Sight’s active read.

Lay still.

Thought about the three nights.

Thought about whoever had been standing at the fifteen-kilometer mark in the southeast at 2 AM learning the quality of the field’s membrane.

He thought: A+ rank.

He thought: the crystalline sharpness had a specific quality.

He thought: high-level. Combat-class probably.

He thought: standing outside the field for three nights without entering.

He thought: that’s patience.

He thought: or something else.

He thought: I’ll find out.

He fell asleep at 3:15 AM with the southeast boundary running at its normal function and the presence gone and the question open.

He told the compass at breakfast.

All five of them.

He told it the way he told things — directly, without softening.

The presence at the boundary. Three nights. Southeast position. Reading the membrane from outside. Deliberate and patient. Not hostile.

The compass received it in five distinct ways.

Sera set down her cup.

”Three nights,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”And you’re only telling us now,” she said.

”I found out last night,” he said. ”Oh Yerin and Hana had been tracking it independently.”

Sera held his gaze.

”Oh Yerin and Hana made independent decisions not to report,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”I’ve addressed that.”

She held his gaze.

Both layers running.

”The presence,” she said. ”Reading the membrane from outside. The quality.”

”Hunter frequency,” he said. ”High rank. Something underneath it I don’t have a category for yet.”

She held his gaze.

”Medical concern,” she said. ”If whatever is outside the field has been reading the membrane for three nights — they have a detailed picture of the field’s structure. Including the compass frequencies.”

”Yes,” he said.

”That’s information about all of us,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I don’t like it,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”I’m not going to manage that feeling,” she said. ”I’m stating it directly.”

”Thank you,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Don’t thank me,” she said.

”Sera,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I’m thanking you,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Both layers.

”Fine,” she said.

Mira had the rig running.

Archive mode.

She looked at him.

”The record needs the full picture,” she said. ”Three nights. Southeast boundary. Deliberate membrane read from outside.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I’m documenting it,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Without consultation,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”The archive documents what happens,” he said. ”This happened. Document it.”

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression.

”Thank you,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Don’t—” he started.

”I know,” she said. ”I’m saying it anyway.”

He almost smiled.

”Fine,” he said.

Dana was already reading.

The Tracker deployed at full capacity on the field’s boundary data — the three nights of Oh Yerin’s tracking, the patrol logs Hana had sent over at 6 AM, the Dimensional Sight’s overnight read that he’d shared with the analysis station.

At 9 AM she looked up.

”The position hasn’t varied,” she said. ”Same fifteen-kilometer mark. Same two-hour window. Same withdrawal pattern.” She held his gaze. ”That’s not reconnaissance. Reconnaissance varies position to avoid pattern detection.”

”What is it then,” he said.

”Ritual,” she said. ”The specific quality of behavior that repeats at the same time in the same place for reasons that matter to the person doing it.” She held his gaze. ”Whoever is at that boundary isn’t learning the field’s structure. They already know it.”

He held her gaze.

”They’ve known it for longer than three nights,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”They’re doing something else,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”What,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The Tracker reads patterns,” she said. ”Not motivations.” She paused. ”But the pattern of returning to the same point at the same time every night — that’s not intelligence gathering. That’s something more personal.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about the field.

About what it felt like inside it.

About what it felt like at the boundary from outside — Oh Yerin’s description. Home.

He thought: someone standing outside the field at 2 AM every night.

He thought: not entering.

He thought: just — close.

He thought: that’s a specific kind of wanting.

Vale had the operational framework updated before noon.

Boundary monitoring protocol. Mandatory reporting for any external presence regardless of threat level. Oh Yerin and Hana both in the reporting chain.

She set it on the table.

He read it.

”Good,” he said.

”The presence,” she said. ”Institutionally — it’s outside the field. No jurisdiction. No framework applies.”

”I know,” he said.

”But the boundary interface data gives us a detailed frequency read,” she said. ”Oh Yerin’s three nights of tracking.” She held his gaze. ”When you’re ready to identify the frequency — the data is there.”

He held her gaze.

”Not yet,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Why not,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Because whoever it is hasn’t done anything,” he said. ”Standing outside a boundary isn’t an act that requires a response.” He held her gaze. ”When they do something — we respond.”

She held his gaze.

The calibrated precision running its assessment.

”And if what they do is enter,” she said.

”Then we know,” he said.

”And if they don’t enter but the nightly presence continues,” she said.

”Then we observe,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The builder function disagrees with that assessment,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”The correct response to an unidentified external presence is identification,” she said. ”Not observation.”

”Not yet,” he said.

She held his gaze.

A long pause.

The calibrated dark eyes running their full assessment.

”Section 2,” she said finally. ”The limits of the builder function.”

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Fine,” she said. ”We observe.”

He held her gaze.

”Thank you,” he said.

She almost said don’t thank me.

She didn’t.

”You’re welcome,” she said instead.

He held her gaze.

That was new.

Lyra found him at the window at noon.

She stood beside him.

He felt her through the center bond — the specific quality she carried when she’d been reading something through the bridge function and had arrived at something she wanted to say.

”The presence at the boundary,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The frequency,” she said. ”I read it through the center bond’s connection to the field’s perimeter.”

He held her gaze.

”Tell me,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”It’s familiar,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Familiar how,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The quality of it,” she said. ”The specific register of a frequency that has been oriented toward the same point for a long time.” She paused. ”The way mine was. Before the crossing.”

He went very still.

”A pull,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”Not mine. Not the compass bonds.” She held his gaze. ”Something that has been pointing at you for longer than fifty-eight days.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about the presence at the boundary.

Three nights. Same position. 2 AM. Deliberate. Patient.

Not entering.

Just close.

He thought: a pull.

He thought: someone standing outside the field at 2 AM because standing outside it is as close as they’ve been able to get.

He thought: that’s not reconnaissance.

He thought: that’s longing.

He thought about the system alert that hadn’t come yet.

He thought about Arc III.

He thought about a girl named Sasha Gamilo who remembered him from before.

He thought: not yet.

He thought: but soon.

He held the southeast boundary through the Dimensional Sight.

Empty now.

2 AM was ten hours away.

He thought: tonight.

He thought: she’ll be back tonight.

He held Lyra’s gaze.

”Thank you,” he said.

”The bridge function reads what matters,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”And this matters.”

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said. ”I know.”

The field ran.

The boundary held.

The seed grew.

And somewhere in the city — southeast, fifteen kilometers out — someone was counting the hours until 2 AM.

The arc was closing.

Something was coming.
