Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Day fifty-nine. 7 AM.

He told them at breakfast.

All of it — the boundary visit, Sasha Gamilo, the eight hundred and forty-seven days, the system alert. He told it directly and without softening because that was how the compass worked now.

When he finished the room was quiet.

Then every panel in the facility chimed simultaneously.

[SYSTEM ALERT — COMPASS NOTIFICATION][OBSESSIVE ENTITY PROXIMITY WARNING — ACTIVE][SUBJECT: SASHA GAMILO — A+ RANK][ANCHOR CONTACT: CONFIRMED — DAY 59][SYSTEM NOTE: MONITORING INITIATED]

Five panels.

Five identical notifications.

He watched the compass read them.

Sera set her cup down.

He felt her frequency immediately — both layers spiking, the elevated intensity sharp rather than the usual gradual build.

”Eight hundred and forty-seven days,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Before the Gates,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Before me,” she said.

He held her gaze.

She held his.

Both layers running at full intensity. The warm composed surface present but working harder than usual.

”She stood outside the field for three nights,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”And you went to her alone,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”At 2 AM,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I’m not going to say what I want to say,” she said.

”Tell me anyway,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”You should have told me before you went,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Not after,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Both layers.

”I would have come with you,” she said.

”I know,” he said. ”That’s partly why I didn’t tell you.”

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression — not the managed warmth, the real thing underneath pressing closer to the surface than usual.

”I don’t like that reasoning,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”It’s the same reasoning I used for the press redirection,” she said. ”Act first. Tell after.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said. ”It is.”

She held his gaze.

A long pause.

”We’re the same,” she said. Not pleased about it.

”In this specific way,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Then she picked up her cup.

”The medical assessment,” she said. ”Sasha Gamilo. A+ rank. Eight hundred and forty-seven days of orientation toward you.” She held his gaze. ”The physiological profile of someone carrying that duration of fixation — that’s not healthy. Whatever her rank, whatever her capacity — that’s a significant psychological load.”

”I know,” he said.

”That makes her unpredictable,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Be careful,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Both layers.

The window open.

”I mean it,” she said.

”I know you do,” he said.

Mira had the rig running.

Archive mode. She’d switched it on the moment the panel notification arrived.

She held his gaze across the table.

”The system generated a new alert type,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”For her specifically,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The same way it generated F-minus for you specifically,” she said.

He held her gaze.

He hadn’t made that connection out loud yet.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The record,” she said. ”The system alert. The eight hundred and forty-seven days. Her standing at the boundary three nights.” She held his gaze. ”This is going in the archive.”

”Yes,” he said.

”All of it,” she said. ”Including what she said. I want to stop standing outside.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The bright directed frequency running at its full operational capacity.

”You went alone,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”To someone the system flagged as an obsessive entity,” she said.

”The system also gave me F-minus,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”That’s not reassuring,” she said.

”No,” he said. ”It’s not.”

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression.

Not the almost-smile.

Something more serious.

”She was there two years before the Gates,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Before the compass,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The recorder function,” she said. ”Eight hundred and forty-seven days is a significant data point. The archive is going to need a dedicated section.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

”I’m starting it today,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at the rig.

”This is the beginning of something,” she said. Not to him specifically. To the record.

”Yes,” he said. ”It is.”

Dana had been at the analysis station since the notification arrived.

The Tracker running at full capacity on everything — the panel alert, the boundary data from Oh Yerin’s three nights of tracking, the frequency read she was building from what he’d described.

At 8 AM she looked up.

”Eight hundred and forty-seven days,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The Tracker can calculate orientation duration from frequency patterns,” she said. ”The way a geological record shows the age of something.” She held his gaze. ”Eight hundred and forty-seven days of consistent orientation leaves a specific signature in a Hunter’s frequency.”

”What does it look like,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Like something that has been under sustained pressure for a very long time,” she said. ”Not breaking. Not releasing. Just — holding.” She paused. ”The Tracker reads that as structurally significant. Something that has been compressed that long either becomes extremely stable or extremely volatile.”

”Which is Sasha,” he said.

Dana held his gaze.

”I don’t know yet,” she said. ”The frequency read I have is secondhand. I need direct range.”

He held her gaze.

”She’ll be back,” he said.

”Yes,” Dana said. ”That’s what the pattern says.” She paused. ”The three-night ritual. The boundary reading. The specific restraint of not entering.” She held his gaze. ”She’s disciplined. Whatever she’s carrying — she has significant control over it.”

”That’s either reassuring or concerning,” he said.

”Both,” Dana said. ”Someone with eight hundred and forty-seven days of fixation and significant self-control is harder to read than someone who acts on impulse.” She held his gaze. ”The Tracker needs more data.”

”You’ll get it,” he said.

”I know,” she said.

She turned back to the terminal.

Then stopped.

”Dillan,” she said.

He looked at her.

”You went alone at 2 AM,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The eight years.

The Tracker.

The eyebrow language: don’t do that again / I know / I mean it / I know.

”Okay,” she said.

”Okay,” he said.

Vale had produced a document by 9 AM.

He looked at it.

SASHA GAMILO — PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENTClassification: External Variable — UnaffiliatedRisk Level: UndeterminedSystem Alert: Obsessive Entity Proximity Warning — Active

Below the header — three pages of what was known, what was unknown, and what the framework required.

She set it on the table.

”The institutional position,” she said.

”Tell me,” he said.

”Sasha Gamilo is an A+ rank Hunter. Unaffiliated. No Guardian Network connection. No prior Association incidents.” She held his gaze. ”The system alert is a new classification type with no established protocol.” She paused. ”Which means I have to build one.”

”The limits document,” he said.

”This falls outside the limits document’s current scope,” she said. ”The limits document covers what the builder function doesn’t know about the meta-architecture. This is different.” She held his gaze. ”This is a human variable.”

”Yes,” he said.

”The framework doesn’t have a protocol for someone who has been orienting toward the anchor for eight hundred and forty-seven days and has now made contact,” she said.

”No,” he said.

”I need to build one,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Vale,” he said.

”Mm.”

”Before you build the protocol,” he said. ”Tell me what you actually think. Not institutionally.”

She held his gaze.

The not-quite-steady quality.

Running at its full present register.

”I think eight hundred and forty-seven days is a very long time to be pointing at something without it knowing,” she said. ”I think the system generating a new alert category for her means the algorithm recognized something unprecedented.” She held his gaze. ”And I think the fact that she stood at the boundary three nights without entering shows either remarkable restraint or remarkable patience.” She paused. ”I haven’t decided which concerns me more.”

He held her gaze.

”Both,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”Both.”

She picked up the document.

”I’m building the protocol,” she said. ”With or without your approval.”

He held her gaze.

”Section 2,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said. ”Section 2.”

She left.

Lyra came to find him at noon.

She didn’t say anything immediately.

Just stood beside him at the window.

He held her gaze.

”The bridge function,” he said. ”Did you feel the boundary contact last night.”

”Yes,” she said.

”The quality of her frequency,” he said. ”What did you read.”

She held his gaze.

”The pull,” she said. ”I told you that yesterday.” She paused. ”But up close — at the boundary contact — something additional.”

”Tell me,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The six hundred years of my pull toward you,” she said. ”It was directional. A point in the pattern where you were going to be. Abstract. The frequency of something that doesn’t exist yet but will.”

”Yes,” he said.

”Sasha’s orientation isn’t like that,” she said. ”It’s not directional toward where you’re going to be.” She held his gaze. ”It’s specific. Anchored to exactly who you were two years ago. The person she knew before the Gates.”

He held her gaze.

”She’s oriented toward a version of me that doesn’t exist anymore,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”The ordinary person. Before F-minus. Before the compass. Before any of this.” She held his gaze. ”She’s been pointing at that version for eight hundred and forty-seven days.”

He held that.

He thought: she loves someone who no longer exists in the form she knew him.

He thought: that’s a specific kind of grief dressed as obsession.

He thought: or obsession dressed as grief.

He thought: I don’t know which yet.

”Lyra,” he said.

”Mm.”

”The restraint she showed,” he said. ”Not entering the field. Standing at the boundary. Going home when I told her to.”

”Yes,” she said.

”Is that genuine,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The bridge function reads quality,” she said. ”Not deception.” She held his gaze. ”What I read from her frequency at the boundary was genuine. The restraint cost her something. She felt the field and she chose not to enter.” She paused. ”That choice was real.”

He held her gaze.

”But,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The pull at eight hundred and forty-seven days,” she said. ”I know what that kind of orientation feels like from the inside. How loud it gets.” She held his gaze. ”My pull was six hundred years and it became unbearable. Hers is eight hundred and forty-seven days and she’s been containing it.”

”Containing it,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”Not resolving it. Containing it.” She held his gaze. ”Things contained under that kind of pressure for that long don’t stay contained permanently.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about the system alert.

Exercise caution.

He thought: yes.

”Thank you,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Be careful,” she said.

Two people had said that to him today.

”Yes,” he said. ”I will.”

Evening.

The facility.

The compass at the dinner table.

Quieter than usual.

Not the fracture-quiet of day fifty-seven.

Something different.

The specific quality of a group that had received new information and was sitting inside it.

He held the field.

Felt all five frequencies.

The elevated registers. The processing quality. The distinct responses — Sera’s sharp concern, Mira’s documentary focus, Dana’s pattern-building, Vale’s framework construction, Lyra’s bridge-function read.

All of them genuine.

All of them carrying something about Sasha Gamilo that hadn’t been there yesterday.

He thought about the empty place at the table.

Still empty.

He thought: that’s not her seat.

He thought: she’s not the eleventh.

He thought: I don’t know what she is yet.

He thought: but she’s something.

He held the field.

The seed in the deep layer.

The architect looking upward.

The boundary in the southeast.

Empty now.

2 AM was five hours away.

He thought: she’ll be back.

He thought: the question is what I do when she comes back.

He thought: that’s Arc III’s question.

He thought: for now — dinner.

He held the compass.

The real thing.

The genuine thing.

The thing worth protecting.

He picked up his fork.

Ate.

The city ran.

The field held.

And somewhere southeast — five hours away from 2 AM — someone was counting.
