Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Day fifty-three started normally.

It stopped being normal at 9 AM when Sera noticed the message.

She wasn’t reading his phone.

She wanted to be clear about that — to herself, in the journal, later that evening. She wasn’t reading his phone. She was at the analysis station running the morning’s field monitoring when the notification appeared on the secondary screen that was synced to the facility’s communication system.

A text.

From Oh Yerin.

Sent to Dillan at 8:47 AM.

The boundary interface this morning — I felt something new in the deep frequency layer. Something that responded to me specifically. Not the meta-architecture’s signal. Something else. Can we talk? Just us. Without the full group.

Sera read it.

Read it again.

Set the tablet down.

She sat with what she was feeling for exactly sixty seconds — the specific discipline of someone who had been practicing the difference between management and honest response.

What she was feeling was not clinical.

She picked up her journal.

Wrote: Oh Yerin texted Dillan asking to meet without the group. I read it on the secondary screen. Not intentionally. The notification appeared. I read it.

She paused.

Wrote: I’m going to tell him I saw it.

She paused again.

Wrote: The instinct before that thought was to not tell him. To let it pass. To find out what Oh Yerin felt in the deep frequency layer through other means.

She looked at what she’d written.

She thought about the routing.

She thought about subsection C.

She thought about I would never do anything that wasn’t in your best interest and how that had stopped being an answer and started being a deflection.

She closed the journal.

Went to find Dillan.

He was in the kitchen.

She stood in the doorway.

He felt her frequency — the synchronized layers at an elevated register, the specific quality she carried when something was present that she was choosing to address rather than manage.

He looked at her.

”What happened,” he said.

”The secondary screen,” she said. ”Oh Yerin’s message. I saw it.” She held his gaze. ”Not intentionally. The notification appeared while I was running the field monitoring.”

He held her gaze.

”Okay,” he said.

”I’m telling you because I saw it and my first instinct was to not tell you,” she said. ”And I’m practicing not acting on that instinct.”

He held her gaze.

”I know,” he said.

”You know,” she said.

”The field tells me things,” he said. ”Your frequency when you came in told me the rest.”

She held his gaze.

”Are you going to meet with her,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said. ”She felt something new in the deep layer. That’s operationally relevant.”

”I know it is,” she said.

”But,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”But I want to know what she felt,” she said. ”And I want to know why she asked for just the two of you.”

He held her gaze.

”You could ask her,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”That’s the correct response.” She paused. ”I’m telling you the instinct that preceded the correct response because the instinct is still there and I’m not going to pretend it isn’t.”

He held her gaze.

He thought about fifty-two days.

About the routing and the non-answer and the slow work of Sera becoming honest about what she was rather than managing what she showed.

”Thank you,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Don’t thank me,” she said.

”Sera,” he said.

”Mm.”

”I’m thanking you,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The almost-smile.

Not quite completing.

”Fine,” she said.

He texted Oh Yerin at 10 AM.

Saw your message. Come to the facility at 2. Bring Sera.

Oh Yerin’s reply: > I asked for just us.

I know, he sent. Bring Sera.

A longer pause.

Okay.

He set the phone down.

Looked at Sera.

She was at the monitoring station.

She felt him looking.

”I heard,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”You didn’t have to do that,” she said.

”Yes I did,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Both layers.

”Why,” she said.

”Because whatever Oh Yerin felt in the deep layer is information the healer function needs,” he said. ”And because the reason she asked for just us probably has something to do with the compass dynamics and those don’t get managed around. They get addressed directly.”

She held his gaze.

”You think she’s uncomfortable with me,” she said.

”I think she read something in the field that involves you specifically,” he said. ”And wanted to tell me without the person it involves being present.” He held her gaze. ”Which means the person it involves should be present.”

She held his gaze.

”That’s—” she stopped.

”What,” he said.

”The most direct you’ve been about a compass dynamic since day twelve,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”The arc is closing,” he said. ”Direct is appropriate.”

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression.

Not the almost-smile.

Something more serious.

”Yes,” she said. ”It is.”

Mira’s document became a problem at noon.

He knew because Dana texted him.

Mira is going to release something. Today. The archive document about the architect’s conversation. I read the draft. It’s accurate but it’s — significant. The public isn’t ready for it.

He texted Mira: Dana says you’re releasing the document today.

Mira: > Yes.

We should talk first, he sent.

We can talk. It’s still going out today.

He held the phone.

Texted Dana: Conference room. Twenty minutes. Get Mira.

Dana: She’s not going to like being summoned.

I know, he sent.

The main room.

Mira and Dana.

He stood at the center.

”The document,” he said to Mira.

She held his gaze.

”It’s accurate,” she said. ”The architect’s conversation. What it means. The meta-architecture. The compass’s purpose. All of it written clearly for someone who has no prior context.”

”That’s the problem,” Dana said.

Mira looked at her.

”The pattern,” Dana said. ”I’ve been reading the public’s response to every significant disclosure we’ve made. The Sovereign Class notification. The Layer 5 footage. The architect contact event.” She held Mira’s gaze. ”Each one produced a larger reaction than the one before. The meta-architecture document — the compass as the center of a structure holding seven worlds — that’s not a larger reaction. That’s a different category of reaction entirely.”

”Which is why it needs to be documented accurately,” Mira said.

”Which is why the timing matters,” Dana said.

They looked at each other.

He watched.

The bright directed frequency and the Tracker precision running at full capacity at each other — not hostile, genuinely disagreeing, both of them right about different parts of the same problem.

”Mira,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Why today,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Because the architect said keep doing what you’re doing,” she said. ”The recorder’s function. The archive that survives the timeframes involved.” She held his gaze. ”Waiting doesn’t make the information more manageable. It makes the delay look like concealment.”

”Or it makes the disclosure look considered rather than reactive,” Dana said.

”It’s not reactive,” Mira said. ”I’ve been writing it for two days.”

”The public has had two days since the architect contact event,” Dana said. ”They’re still processing the ambassador footage. The Layer 7 bond notification. The global architectural shift.” She held Mira’s gaze. ”Give them thirty days before you tell them the compass is the future center of a meta-architecture holding seven worlds.”

Mira held her gaze.

”Thirty days,” she said.

”Thirty days,” Dana said.

He looked at Mira.

She held his gaze.

He could feel the field carrying her frequency — the bright directed pattern at its full operational capacity, the recorder function deployed at maximum, and underneath it the specific tension of someone who understood the argument against her position and hadn’t decided whether to accept it.

”The document stays in the archive,” he said. ”Unpublished. Thirty days. Then we revisit.”

Mira held his gaze.

”If something happens in thirty days that makes earlier release necessary—” she started.

”Then we revisit earlier,” he said.

She held his gaze.

A long pause.

”Fine,” she said.

She looked at Dana.

”The pattern read was accurate,” she said. Not conceding. Acknowledging.

Dana held her gaze.

”So was the recorder instinct,” she said. ”The document should exist. The timing is the only question.”

Mira held her gaze.

Something passed between them.

Not warmth — the specific acknowledgment of two people who had genuinely disagreed and had both been right about part of it.

”Thirty days,” Mira said.

”Thirty days,” Dana confirmed.

Oh Yerin arrived at 2 PM.

She came in and saw Sera and stopped.

He held Oh Yerin’s gaze.

”Sera needs to hear what you felt,” he said. ”Whatever it is.”

Oh Yerin held his gaze.

Then she looked at Sera.

Sera looked back at her.

The healer and the membrane reader.

Two people who had been building a protocol together for two days and had discovered their abilities were related.

”Okay,” Oh Yerin said.

She sat.

He sat.

Sera sat.

”The deep frequency layer,” Oh Yerin said. ”The meta-architecture’s signal. I’ve been interfacing with it since yesterday. This morning—” she paused. ”I felt a secondary signal inside it. Not the meta-architecture’s communication. Something responding to the meta-architecture’s communication.”

He held her gaze.

”Responding how,” he said.

”The way a frequency responds when it’s been named accurately,” she said. She looked at Sera. ”The way your healing function responds when the architectural comprehension passive confirms what it is.” She held Sera’s gaze. ”The secondary signal in the deep layer — it responded to the architect naming the healer function last night.”

Sera went very still.

”The signal responded to what the architect said about me,” she said.

”Yes,” Oh Yerin said.

”Why,” Sera said.

Oh Yerin held her gaze.

”Because the signal is inside the field,” she said. ”And the field is organized around the compass. And the healer function is the compass’s most continuous presence — the monitoring, the attention, the daily sustained awareness.” She held Sera’s gaze. ”The seed grows on genuine connection. Of everything in the compass, the healer function produces the most consistent daily genuine connection.” She paused. ”The seed has been — oriented toward it.”

Sera held her gaze.

He held both their gazes.

He thought about what Oh Yerin was saying.

He thought: the seed in the field. Growing on genuine connection. The most consistent daily genuine connection in the compass is Sera’s attention.

He thought: the seed is most developed where Sera is.

He thought: the seed is most concentrated around the healer function.

”What does that mean,” he said. ”For the seed’s development.”

Oh Yerin held his gaze.

”It means the seed isn’t growing evenly through the field,” she said. ”It’s growing fastest where the genuine connection is deepest and most consistent.” She held his gaze. ”The healer function is the seed’s primary growth point.”

The room was quiet.

Sera looked at her hands.

He looked at her.

”Sera,” he said.

She looked up.

Both layers.

Something in her expression that wasn’t managed.

”The attention I give,” she said. ”The daily monitoring. The protocol building. The morning tea and the medical notes and the fifty-two days of being present every day without being asked.” She held his gaze. ”That’s what the seed is eating most.”

”Yes,” Oh Yerin said. ”That’s what I felt.”

Sera held his gaze.

He held hers.

”How do you feel about that,” he said.

She held his gaze.

She thought about it.

For a long time.

Both layers.

Fully open.

”Terrified,” she said. ”And completely certain I’m going to keep doing it anyway.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The terrifying ones are worth doing,” she said.

He almost smiled.

”You’ve been talking to Vale,” he said.

She almost smiled.

”She said it first,” she said.

Oh Yerin looked between them.

”There’s something else,” she said.

They both looked at her.

”The secondary signal,” she said. ”The one oriented toward the healer function.” She held Sera’s gaze. ”It’s not just reading the attention. It’s — responding to it. The seed in the deep frequency layer is communicating back.”

Sera held her gaze.

”To me,” she said.

”Yes,” Oh Yerin said.

”What is it saying,” Sera said.

Oh Yerin held her gaze.

”The same thing the architect said,” she said.

”Keep doing what you’re doing,” Sera said.

”Yes,” Oh Yerin said.

The room was quiet.

He held the field.

The seed in its deep layer.

Oriented toward the healer function.

Communicating back.

He thought: the seed knows what it needs.

He thought: and it’s been getting it since day two.

He looked at Sera.

She was looking at her hands.

Then she looked up.

Both layers.

The synchronized quality.

Settled and terrified simultaneously.

”Okay,” she said.

To the seed.

To the meta-architecture.

To the fifty-two days and however many came after.

”Okay,” she said.

Evening.

The facility.

The compass at its end-of-day configuration.

He stood at the window.

The field running its fifteen-kilometer read.

He thought about the day.

Sera reading the message and choosing to tell him. Mira and Dana disagreeing about timing and both being right. Oh Yerin and the secondary signal oriented toward the healer function.

The tensions.

Not catastrophic.

Not managed away.

Real.

Present.

The compass wasn’t smooth. It wasn’t perfectly synchronized. It had friction and instinct and the specific edges of five people who were genuinely themselves rather than performing cooperation.

That was the point.

The seed grew on genuine connection.

Genuine things had edges.

He held the field.

Thought about what remained before Arc II closed.

The tensions were surfacing.

Good.

Let them surface.

That was what the closing Chapters were for.
