Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Day fifty-six. 2 PM.

Dana called them together at the main room table — all five compass frequencies, no extended circle. What she’d read was for the compass first.

He sat at the center.

She stood.

”Kang Mirae,” she said. ”I ran the Tracker on her frequency this morning while she was in the room. I want to tell you what I found.”

The compass looked at her.

”The frequency is clean,” she said. ”No deception. No threat quality. S-rank combat-enhancement, exactly what the registration says.” She held their gazes. ”But the Tracker doesn’t just read what a frequency is. It reads what a frequency is doing.”

”And what was hers doing,” Sera said.

Dana held her gaze.

”Orienting,” she said.

The room was quiet.

”Toward Dillan specifically,” she said. ”Not toward the anchor’s function. Not toward the field’s protective quality.” She held the compass’s gazes in turn. ”Toward him. The person.”

He held Dana’s gaze.

”How long has that been building,” he said.

”Thirty-four days,” she said. ”Since she first entered the field range on day twenty-two. The orientation has been developing the entire time.” She paused. ”She came today because the orientation reached a threshold. The feeling she called obligation — that wasn’t obligation. That was the orientation looking for acknowledgment.”

The room absorbed that.

He looked at each of them.

Sera had both layers running at elevated intensity. The warm composed surface fully present. Something underneath it that was running its own calculation.

Mira was looking at the table. The recorder function processing.

Vale had her pen out. Writing.

Lyra was at the window. Not looking at anyone. But the center bond was running at a register that told him she’d already known most of this and had written it on the paper now sitting on the windowsill.

He held Dana’s gaze.

”Is it genuine,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”That’s what makes it significant.”

Sera spoke first.

”The field attracts genuine frequencies,” she said. ”The architect confirmed that. The seed grows on genuine connection.” She held Dana’s gaze. ”Kang Mirae’s orientation being genuine doesn’t mean it’s invited.”

”I didn’t say it was invited,” Dana said.

”No,” Sera said. ”But you called it significant.”

”It is significant,” Dana said.

”Why,” Sera said. ”There are eight million people inside the fifteen-kilometer radius. The field reads all of them. How many are orienting toward Dillan and simply haven’t shown up at the door yet.”

Dana held her gaze.

”Most of them aren’t S-rank Hunters who cleared fifty-three solo Gates and tried proper channels four times before showing up directly,” she said.

”That makes her persistent,” Sera said. ”Not significant.”

”The Tracker disagrees,” Dana said.

They held each other’s gaze.

He watched.

The healer function and the reader function running against each other with genuine friction. Both accurate about different parts of the same thing.

”Sera,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Tell me what you’re actually thinking,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Both layers.

”I’m thinking that the field is going to keep expanding,” she said. ”And the more it expands the more frequencies it covers. And some of those frequencies are going to do what Kang Mirae did — feel something genuine and come looking for the source.” She held his gaze. ”And the compass has to decide what it does with that pattern before it becomes a pattern we’re managing around instead of addressing.”

”That’s the operational concern,” he said. ”What’s the other one.”

She held his gaze.

A pause.

”The other one isn’t operational,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”She’s S-rank,” she said. ”She cleared Gates alone for fifty-three days. She felt the field and she came directly.” She paused. ”She’s exactly the kind of person the field would make significant.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I sat between you this morning,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

”I’d do it again,” she said.

”I know,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression — not the managed warmth, not the composed surface. The real thing underneath. Present. Acknowledged.

”That’s the other concern,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I’m not apologizing for it,” she said.

”I’m not asking you to,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Then she looked at the table.

Both layers. Running.

She didn’t say anything else.

Mira looked up from the table.

”The empty place,” she said.

Everyone looked at her.

”The table,” she said. ”Sera built it for eleven. We have ten. One place is still empty.” She held Dana’s gaze. ”Is Kang Mirae the eleventh.”

Dana held her gaze.

”The Tracker reads what is,” she said. ”Not what will be.”

”But you have an assessment,” Mira said.

Dana held her gaze.

”Yes,” she said.

”Tell us,” Mira said.

Dana held the compass’s gazes.

”The empty place isn’t Kang Mirae,” she said.

The room held that.

”How do you know,” Mira said.

”Because the Tracker reads patterns and the pattern of Kang Mirae’s frequency doesn’t match the quality of the compass bonds,” Dana said. ”The compass bonds are bilateral. Permanent. Load-bearing.” She held Mira’s gaze. ”Kang Mirae’s orientation is genuine but it’s singular. One direction. She’s orienting toward Dillan. The compass bond requires something that runs back.”

”Does it run back,” Mira said.

Dana looked at him.

He looked at Dana.

The eyebrow language: does it / I don’t know yet / honest answer / yes.

”I don’t know yet,” he said out loud.

The room held that.

He held all five frequencies through the field.

He thought about Kang Mirae.

About the question she’d asked — does the field create obligation — and the honest answer he’d given.

About Lyra’s paper on the windowsill.

About the seed growing on genuine connection.

About what genuine meant when it ran in one direction.

He thought: I don’t know yet.

He thought: that’s the accurate answer.

Vale closed her notebook.

”The institutional position,” she said.

Everyone looked at her.

”Kang Mirae is not affiliated with the Guardian Network,” she said. ”She’s an independent Hunter operating within the field’s range. The field’s coverage applies to her the same as anyone else in the fifteen-kilometer radius.” She held the compass’s gazes. ”Institutionally there is nothing to act on.”

”This isn’t an institutional question,” Sera said.

”No,” Vale said. ”But the institutional position clarifies what is and isn’t the compass’s responsibility.” She held Sera’s gaze. ”Kang Mirae’s orientation is hers. Not ours to manage.”

”I’m not talking about managing it,” Sera said.

”Then what are you talking about,” Vale said.

Sera held her gaze.

”I’m talking about acknowledging that it exists,” she said. ”And deciding how the compass responds to something that exists rather than pretending it doesn’t.”

Vale held her gaze.

”The compass’s response is what it’s always been,” Vale said. ”The anchor is the center. The bonds are permanent. External frequencies don’t change the configuration.”

”External frequencies can still affect it,” Sera said.

”Affect isn’t the same as change,” Vale said.

They held each other’s gaze.

He watched.

The builder function and the healer function.

Two kinds of precision running at full capacity at each other.

Both right about different things.

Both — he held the field’s read — carrying something underneath the argument that wasn’t strictly about Kang Mirae.

He didn’t name it.

Let them run.

Lyra turned from the window.

The compass looked at her.

She held Dillan’s gaze.

”The bridge function reads what passes through the Layer 4 connection,” she said. ”Every significant frequency in the field runs through the center bond at some level.” She held his gaze. ”I’ve been reading Kang Mirae’s frequency since she entered the main room this morning.”

”What did you read,” he said.

”What Dana said,” she said. ”Genuine. Singular. One direction.” She paused. ”But also something Dana didn’t mention.”

Dana looked at her.

”What,” Dana said.

Lyra held Dana’s gaze.

”The Tracker reads patterns,” she said. ”The bridge function reads quality.” She held Dana’s gaze. ”The quality of Kang Mirae’s orientation isn’t new. It’s been developing for thirty-four days inside the field.” She paused. ”And the field’s deep layer — the seed — has been reading it the entire time.”

The room was quiet.

”The seed registered her,” he said.

”Yes,” Lyra said.

”Not as a compass bond,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”Something different. The seed registers genuine things regardless of whether they become bonds.” She held his gaze. ”It doesn’t evaluate for the compass specifically. It evaluates for genuine connection in general.”

”And Kang Mirae’s orientation is genuine enough to register,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”What does that mean,” he said.

Lyra held his gaze.

”The seed grows on genuine connection,” she said. ”Any genuine connection. Not just compass bonds.” She held his gaze. ”Kang Mirae’s orientation has been feeding the seed for thirty-four days without knowing it.”

The room held that.

He thought about the seed.

About genuine things feeding it regardless of whether the person was aware.

About eight million people in the field’s range going about ordinary lives and the ordinary genuine moments of those lives — love, care, connection — all of it feeding something they couldn’t see.

He thought: the seed doesn’t require the compass to grow.

He thought: the compass just feeds it most efficiently.

He thought: because the compass is the most concentrated genuine connection in the field.

He held that.

Held the field.

Held the seed.

”Lyra,” he said.

”Mm.”

”The paper on the windowsill,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”You wrote her down before you understood why,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”The bridge function knew before you did,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Trust that more,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said.

The meeting ended without resolution.

Which was correct.

Not everything required resolution. Some things required acknowledgment and time.

The compass dispersed to their afternoon operations. He sat at the table for a moment after they left.

He thought about the morning.

About Kang Mirae asking if the field created obligation.

About five women responding to her presence in five completely distinct ways — Sera positioning herself physically, Mira documenting, Dana reading, Vale filing, Lyra writing a single sheet of paper.

He thought: this is what the yandere edges look like when they’re honest.

Not violence. Not manipulation. Not the dramatic expressions of the earlier Chapters.

Something more uncomfortable.

Five people who loved dangerously and knew exactly what they were doing and did it anyway.

He thought: that’s the real thing.

He thought: that’s harder to write around than anything explicit.

He thought: good.

He picked up his phone.

Texted Kang Mirae: For future formations in the field’s range — contact Hana directly. Her number is below.

He added Hana’s contact.

Sent it.

Kang Mirae’s reply came in four minutes.

Thank you. I’ll use it.

A pause.

Then:

The field. What you said this morning. About clarity not obligation.

Yes, he sent.*

I’ve been thinking about it, she sent. You’re right that it’s not obligation. But clarity about what exactly.

He held the phone.

He thought about the honest answer.

He thought: the honest answer is I don’t know yet.

He sent: That’s what we’re both figuring out.

Her reply: > Fair enough.

He set the phone down.

Looked at the window.

At the stone and the decision log and the single sheet of paper.

Three held things.

Three marked beginnings.

The windowsill filling up.
