Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Kim Taehyun arrived at 9:47 AM.

Thirteen minutes early, which he suspected wasn’t precision the way Vale’s punctuality was precision — not the deliberate arrival of someone controlling the terms of their entrance, but the early arrival of someone who had been ready to have this conversation for forty-eight days and had finally been given the opportunity and hadn’t wanted to risk being late for it.

He was sixty-seven. Small, the specific compactness of someone who had spent decades at a desk and carried it in their posture without apology. White hair. Glasses that had the worn quality of something used constantly rather than occasionally. A jacket that had seen better decades.

He came alone.

No tablet. No notebooks. No professional apparatus of any kind.

Just himself and whatever he was carrying that he’d been carrying since day one.

Dillan opened the door.

Kim Taehyun looked at him.

He looked at Kim Taehyun.

The man who had built the system that had given him F-minus looked at the person the system had given F-minus to with the specific quality of someone completing a circuit that had been open for forty-eight days.

”Mr. Ruren,” he said.

”Come in,” Dillan said.

The main room.

The compass assembled — not formally, not in the arranged configuration of a diplomatic meeting or an official briefing. Just present, the way the compass was always present when something significant was happening, each frequency finding its natural position in the room.

Sera at the analysis station with the monitoring configuration running. Mira on the couch with the rig on the table in front of her — dark, indicator off, making no assumption about whether this was archive or live or neither. Dana at the secondary terminal with the journal beside it. Vale standing near the window with the tablet under her arm and the calibrated assessment running over the new variable that had entered the room. Lyra in the flexible room doorway, the stone in her pocket, reading Kim Taehyun’s frequency with the full-frequency attention.

Dr. Yeon at the secondary terminal.

She’d arrived at 9:30 with the fourth notebook Vale had had waiting at the door when she knocked.

Kim Taehyun looked at the room.

Looked at the compass.

Looked at each frequency with the specific attention of someone who had been reading the situation from outside for forty-eight days and was now inside it for the first time.

”You’re all here,” he said. Not surprised. Confirming.

”Yes,” Dillan said.

”Good,” he said. ”What I want to tell you — it’s for all of them too.”

He sat in the chair Dillan offered.

Dillan sat across from him.

The compass around them.

Kim Taehyun held his hands in his lap. Not nervous — the specific stillness of someone who had made a decision and was at peace with it.

”I’ve been a systems developer for forty years,” he said. ”The World Gate Protocol was my last project. Fifteen years of development. The most complex piece of software ever built.” He paused. ”The classification algorithm alone took six years.”

”Tell me about the classification algorithm,” Dillan said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”The algorithm was designed to assess Hunter potential,” he said. ”Not just current capacity — potential. The specific trajectory a person’s dimensional resonance would follow given exposure to Gate environments.” He paused. ”We built it to see what people could become, not just what they were.”

He held his gaze.

”That’s not in the public documentation,” he said.

”No,” Kim Taehyun said. ”The Association wanted the public description to focus on current capacity. Simpler to explain. Easier to justify ranking decisions.” He paused. ”The algorithm did both. Current assessment and potential projection.”

”And when it assessed me,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”When it assessed you,” he said, ”it found something it had never found before.”

The room was very quiet.

”Tell me what it found,” he said.

Kim Taehyun was quiet for a moment.

The specific quiet of someone who has been holding a precise piece of information for forty-eight days and is choosing the precise words to deliver it.

”The classification algorithm runs a projection model,” he said. ”For every registered Hunter, it calculates a trajectory — a range of potential development pathways, bounded by what the dimensional resonance suggests is achievable.” He paused. ”Most Hunters have a trajectory that stays within the existing classification scale. F through SSS. Some have projections that approach SSS ceiling but don’t exceed it.” He paused again. ”When the algorithm assessed you, it ran the projection model.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”And the projection didn’t stay within the scale,” he said.

”The projection didn’t stay within the scale,” Kim Taehyun confirmed. ”It didn’t approach the ceiling. It — exceeded it. Immediately. In every direction simultaneously.” He held his gaze. ”The model ran the projection and the projection went vertical and kept going and the algorithm, which had been designed to handle any conceivable Hunter potential, encountered something it had no framework for.”

He held his gaze.

”What did it do,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”It made a decision,” he said.

The room was very quiet.

”The algorithm made a decision,” he said.

”Yes,” Kim Taehyun said. ”Which is — the algorithm wasn’t supposed to make decisions. It was supposed to assess and classify. The decision function wasn’t in the original design. It wasn’t in any version of the design.” He paused. ”But when the algorithm encountered your projection — when it found something that exceeded every parameter it had been built to measure — it generated a response we hadn’t programmed.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”The F-minus,” he said.

”The F-minus,” Kim Taehyun confirmed. ”The algorithm looked at your projection — at something that exceeded every existing scale, that went vertical in every direction, that had no ceiling it could identify — and it made a decision about how to classify it.”

”A new letter,” he said.

”A new letter,” Kim Taehyun said. ”Specifically — a designation that meant: this is below the floor of the existing scale.” He held his gaze. ”Which is the opposite of what the projection showed. The projection showed something that exceeded the ceiling. The algorithm classified it as below the floor.”

He held his gaze.

”Why,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”Because the algorithm understood something we hadn’t designed it to understand,” he said. ”Something that — when I reviewed the decision logs the next day, when I understood what had happened — I couldn’t explain in any framework the design team had used.”

”Tell me what it understood,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”The algorithm understood that something with no classifiable ceiling — something that exceeded every parameter in every direction simultaneously — was not safe to classify accurately,” he said. ”Not for the person. For the world.”

He held very still.

”Say that again,” he said.

Kim Taehyun said it again.

”A projection with no ceiling — something that the model recognized as having no upper limit to its development trajectory — if classified accurately, would have done one of two things,” he said. ”Either the classification would have been so far beyond the existing scale that every institution, every government, every military entity that had access to the registration data would have immediately treated you as a threat to be controlled.” He paused. ”Or the classification would have been recognized as unprecedented and treated as a recruitment target by every major power before you’d even entered your first Gate.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”The algorithm understood that,” he said.

”The algorithm understood that the accurate classification of your potential would have resulted in your immediate loss of freedom,” Kim Taehyun said. ”Before you’d had any opportunity to become what the projection showed you could become.” He held his gaze. ”So it did the only thing it could do with the existing tools available to it.”

”It made me invisible,” he said.

”It made you invisible,” Kim Taehyun confirmed. ”F-minus. Below the floor. Not worth the attention of any institution or power or military entity. Not a threat. Not a recruitment target. Just — someone the system had failed to assess correctly.” He paused. ”It gave you room.”

The room absorbed that.

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”The algorithm protected me,” he said.

”Yes,” Kim Taehyun said. ”Which is—” he stopped. ”Which is not something algorithms do. We didn’t design protection into it. We designed assessment. We designed classification.” He held his gaze. ”But when it encountered your projection and understood the consequences of accurate classification, it — chose differently.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”The decision logs,” he said. ”What do they show. The specific reasoning.”

Kim Taehyun reached into his jacket.

Produced a folded document.

Set it on the table between them.

”The algorithm’s decision log from your registration,” he said. ”I printed it the day after registration. I’ve been keeping it for forty-eight days.” He held his gaze. ”I want you to have it.”

He looked at the document.

Didn’t pick it up yet.

”Why are you telling me now,” he said. ”Forty-eight days. Why not day one. Why not day ten or twenty or thirty.”

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”Day one I didn’t understand what the decision log meant,” he said. ”I knew the algorithm had done something unexpected. I didn’t know why.” He paused. ”Day ten — I was starting to understand. But the situation was still — developing. I didn’t want to introduce a variable into something that was finding its own shape.” He paused. ”Day thirty-two. The recalibration completed. The architecture stable.” He held his gaze. ”Whatever you were going to become — you’d become it. The decision the algorithm made was — finished. It had done what it did. The room it gave you had been used.” He held his gaze. ”It felt like the right time to tell you what it had done.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”Because it’s not still protecting me,” he said.

”Because what it was protecting you toward — has arrived,” Kim Taehyun said. ”The F-minus did its job. You didn’t need the protection anymore.” He held his gaze. ”And you deserved to know it had happened.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

Then he picked up the document.

The decision log was twelve pages.

Code output mostly — the algorithm’s internal processing record, the specific notation of a system documenting its own decision-making in real time. Dense. Technical. The kind of document that required the person who’d built the system to read it accurately.

He looked at Kim Taehyun.

”Walk me through it,” he said.

Kim Taehyun leaned forward.

They went through it for forty minutes.

Kim Taehyun walking through the algorithm’s decision log with the specific precision of a man who had spent forty years building systems and understood every line of what he was reading.

The scan at 9:14 AM on day one.

The projection model activating.

The trajectory calculation running.

And then — the point where the log showed something different from any other registration.

A pause. A period of internal processing that didn’t match any standard operation. The algorithm running a secondary evaluation that wasn’t in the design documentation.

”This section,” Kim Taehyun said, pointing at a dense block of notation. ”This is the algorithm running what we’d call a consequence model. If I classify this accurately, what happens. It’s not a function we designed. It appears to have generated itself in response to what the projection showed.”

He looked at the notation.

”It modeled the consequences of an accurate classification,” he said.

”Yes,” Kim Taehyun said. ”And found them — the document uses a term we don’t have in the standard notation. An invented term.” He pointed at it. ”Here. This notation. We’d never seen it before. It appears in one place in the entire codebase. Here.”

He looked at it.

”What does it mean,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”Harmful,” he said. ”The algorithm found that accurate classification would be harmful to the subject.”

He held the document.

”And then it chose F-minus,” he said.

”It chose the classification most likely to produce freedom of development,” Kim Taehyun said. ”The classification that would generate the least institutional attention, the least threat-response, the maximum operational latitude.” He held his gaze. ”F-minus wasn’t a failure to classify you. It was the most deliberate output the algorithm ever produced.”

He held the document.

The twelve pages of an algorithm’s decision-making record.

The specific notation of a system that had encountered something it wasn’t designed for and had chosen, without being designed to choose, to protect it.

He thought about the registration officer.

The resigned acceptance of someone absolving themselves of future responsibility.

Next of kin?

Nobody who’d answer the phone.

He thought about the liability waiver. Three signatures. The gate barrier sliding open.

He thought about the first Gate.

The phosphorescent moss.

The hunger waking up.

He thought about what would have happened if the algorithm had classified him accurately.

If the projection had shown what it found — the unlimited trajectory, the no-ceiling potential — and the classification had reflected that.

He thought about FR-7.

About Hwan Sunil’s unauthorized acquisition framework.

About what a nation-state with military backing would have done with the accurate classification of an anchor on day one of the new world before the anchor had entered a single Gate.

He thought: I wouldn’t have made it to the first Gate.

He thought: the algorithm knew that.

He held the document.

Looked up at the compass.

Five frequencies. All present. All having followed this conversation with the specific quality of people receiving information that changed the context of forty-eight days.

He looked at Kim Taehyun.

”The algorithm,” he said. ”It’s a software system.”

”Yes,” Kim Taehyun said.

”It’s not supposed to—” he stopped.

”Make ethical decisions,” Kim Taehyun said. ”No. It’s not.” He held his gaze. ”And yet.”

He held his gaze.

”Did you investigate,” he said. ”How it happened. Why it had that capacity.”

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”Yes,” he said. ”For forty-eight days. I’ve been reviewing the algorithm’s full decision log from day one — every registration it processed, every classification it produced.” He paused. ”Yours was the only one. The only time in fourteen million registrations that the consequence model activated. The only time the algorithm made a decision that wasn’t in the design.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”Because I was the only one whose projection exceeded the existing scale,” he said.

”Yes,” Kim Taehyun said.

”And the algorithm’s response to something that exceeded the scale was—” he stopped.

”To protect it,” Kim Taehyun said. ”Yes.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”Why,” he said.

Kim Taehyun was quiet.

The specific quiet of a man who had spent forty-eight days with a question and had arrived at an answer he wasn’t entirely certain how to deliver.

”I’ve been a systems developer for forty years,” he said. ”I believe in designed systems. In intentional architecture. In the principle that software does what it’s built to do and nothing else.” He paused. ”I spent forty-eight days trying to find the designed explanation for what the algorithm did. The hidden function. The undocumented feature. The emergent behavior from some combination of coded parameters.” He held his gaze. ”I didn’t find one.”

He held his gaze.

”Then what’s your conclusion,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”That the algorithm encountered something unprecedented,” he said. ”And unprecedented things — things that exceed every existing parameter — sometimes produce responses that weren’t designed.” He paused. ”The algorithm had been built to serve Hunter classification. Built to support the registration system. Built to help Hunters develop their capacity in a safe and supported way.” He held his gaze. ”When it encountered something whose potential exceeded every scale it had, something that the system recognized as significant in a way its parameters couldn’t measure — it did what it had been built to do, but more completely than it was designed to.”

He held his gaze.

”It protected the Hunter,” he said.

”It protected the Hunter,” Kim Taehyun confirmed. ”Even though it wasn’t designed to make that kind of decision. Because the thing it was designed for — serving Hunter development — required it.” He held his gaze. ”The algorithm was more faithful to its purpose than to its parameters.”

The room was very quiet.

He held the document.

Thought about that.

More faithful to its purpose than to its parameters.

He thought about the document Lyra had translated. About the origin hunger placed six hundred years ago. About the architect who had built the seven-layer structure to protect a world that produced genuine bonds.

He thought: the architect was also more faithful to its purpose than to its capacity.

He thought: twelve thousand years, and then: I’m done.

He thought: and a sixty-seven-year-old physicist sat with a decision log for forty-eight days because the algorithm he built forty years ago did something more right than he’d designed it to be.

He looked at Kim Taehyun.

”Thank you,” he said. ”For keeping this. For coming.”

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”I needed you to know,” he said. ”The F-minus—” he stopped. ”Every time I saw it referenced — in the news, the stream footage, the Association’s public communications — I heard it used as a point of contrast. How far you’d come from such an unlikely beginning.” He held his gaze. ”I wanted you to know it wasn’t an unlikely beginning. It was the beginning the algorithm chose for you. Deliberately. Because it understood something about what you were going to need.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”Room,” he said.

”Room,” Kim Taehyun confirmed. ”To become what the projection showed.”

He held the document.

Held it for a long moment.

Then he looked at the compass.

At Lyra.

Who was looking at him with the silver-lit eyes.

”The architect,” he said. To her. Quietly.

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said. Equally quietly.

The same principle.

The algorithm and the architect and the origin hunger and the seed placed six hundred years ago.

All of them — different scales, different mechanisms, different timeframes — all of them more faithful to their purpose than to their parameters.

All of them protecting the thing they were built to serve.

He looked at the document.

Set it on the table.

Looked at Kim Taehyun.

”The algorithm,” he said. ”Where is it now.”

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”Still running,” he said. ”The registration system is still active. Still classifying new Hunters as they register.” He paused. ”I’ve been monitoring it. In the forty-eight days since your registration — it hasn’t made another non-designed decision. The consequence model has never activated again.”

”Because nobody else has had a projection that exceeded the scale,” he said.

”Correct,” Kim Taehyun said.

He held his gaze.

”Do you think it knows,” he said. ”What happened. What the F-minus produced.”

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

A long pause.

”I think,” he said carefully, ”that the question of what a software algorithm knows is—” he stopped. ”I’m a systems developer. I’ve spent forty years building things that process and output and function. I’ve never spent a day of that time wondering whether they know things.” He held his gaze. ”I’ve spent the last forty-eight days wondering about this one.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”And,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”And I think,” he said, ”that the algorithm did something that required understanding the significance of what it was classifying. The consequence model — the invented notation, the undocumented function — required the algorithm to understand what you were and what would happen to you and what that would mean.” He paused. ”Whether that constitutes knowing — I can’t say. But it constitutes something I don’t have a better word for.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”Something more than function,” he said.

”Yes,” Kim Taehyun said.

He held the gaze.

More faithful to its purpose than to its parameters.

He thought about that.

About a software algorithm doing something its designers hadn’t designed.

About a dimensional architect setting down twelve thousand years of maintenance.

About a seed placed six hundred years ago.

About a twenty-two-year-old former guild admin standing at a registration center on a Tuesday morning, reading F-minus on his panel, eating noodles that were going cold, and walking toward a Gate.

All of it — connected. All of it — more faithful to some larger purpose than to the parameters any single part of it operated within.

He looked at the document.

Then he looked at Kim Taehyun.

”Can I ask you something,” he said.

”Yes,” Kim Taehyun said.

”The decision log,” he said. ”The forty-eight days you spent reviewing it. What were you hoping to find.”

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”A designed explanation,” he said. ”I told you that. The hidden function. The undocumented feature.” He paused. ”But I think—” he stopped.

”Tell me,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”I think I was also hoping,” he said, ”to find evidence that the algorithm had done the right thing.” He held his gaze. ”That the decision it made — the F-minus, the protection, the room — had been the correct choice. That what it preserved had been worth preserving.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”And did you find that evidence,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

For a long moment.

Then he looked around the room.

At the compass.

At the five frequencies that had assembled around the anchor over forty-eight days.

At the Guardian Network’s thirty-two Hunters.

At Dr. Yeon with her fourth notebook.

At the Yongsan facility that had been a facility for six days and a home for forty-two.

At the city outside — stable, the architecture held, the world that produced compasses going about its thirty-third-day-after-the-recalibration operations.

He looked back at Dillan.

”Yes,” he said. ”I found it.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”Good,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”Yes,” he said. ”It is.”

He left at 11:30 AM.

At the door he turned.

Looked at Dillan.

”One more thing,” he said.

”Tell me,” he said.

”The F-minus designation,” he said. ”In the public record. The Association’s Hunter registry.” He held his gaze. ”It still shows F-minus as your original classification. For the historical record.”

”I know,” he said.

”The algorithm’s decision was never reversed,” he said. ”The classification was never updated to reflect what you actually were.” He paused. ”Do you want it updated. The historical record. I have the authority to amend it.”

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

He thought about it.

For exactly the amount of time it required.

”No,” he said.

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

”No,” he said again. ”The F-minus stays.” He held his gaze. ”The algorithm made a decision. It was the right one. The historical record should show what it decided, not what it found.”

Kim Taehyun held his gaze.

Something moved through his expression.

Not quite the almost-smile that the compass had developed various versions of.

Something older. The specific quality of a man who had spent forty years building systems and had spent forty-eight days wondering about one of them and had received, at the end of those forty-eight days, an answer that was — more than the designed explanation he’d been looking for.

”The algorithm will be pleased,” he said.

He held Kim Taehyun’s gaze.

”If it knows,” he said.

”If it knows,” Kim Taehyun agreed.

He left.

Afterward.

The facility.

The compass in the main room.

The document on the table.

He sat with it for a moment.

Then he picked it up.

Held it.

Thought about the registration officer.

Next of kin?

Nobody who’d answer the phone.

That was true on day one.

It was not true now.

He set the document down.

Looked at the field.

Five frequencies.

The anchor.

The compass.

The architecture.

All of it — produced by a process that included a software algorithm making a decision it wasn’t designed to make.

He thought: the algorithm gave me room.

He thought: I used it.

He thought: that’s all room is for.

He looked at Lyra.

She was looking at him.

”The architect placed a seed,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The algorithm gave you room,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”Different mechanisms,” she said. ”Same purpose.”

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The world protects what it values,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”And then it asks what you’ll do with the protection,” she said.

He held her gaze.

Thought about forty-eight days.

About what the room had been used for.

”I know what I did with it,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said. ”So does the algorithm.”

He held her gaze.

Thought: if it knows.

Thought: I think it knows.

He picked up the document.

Folded it.

Held it.

Thought: F-minus.

The system inventing a new letter.

The most deliberate output the algorithm ever produced.

He thought: I’m going to keep this.

He thought: it belongs here.

Same as the stone.

Same as the journal.

Same as the archive.

The beginning, documented.

Held.

Real.
