Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Vale arrived at 1:58 PM.

Two minutes early, which Dillan had come to understand was her version of punctual — she was never on time, she was always slightly before it, because on time implied the possibility of being late and Vale did not build that possibility into her operational parameters.

She was alone.

No analysts. No assistants. No the-meeting-is-important personnel infrastructure that she brought to formal reviews. Just her, in the command-level uniform, with the calibrated dark eyes and the SS-rank insignia and a leather folder under one arm that she set on the table when she came in without opening.

She looked at the room.

At the analysis station — organized in Sera’s handwriting, the specific taxonomy of a person who had decided how this space worked. At the Gate research stack. At the two tea cups on the coffee table, one in front of the couch, one in front of the chair.

At Lyra, in the chair.

Vale stopped.

Not physically — her stride completed, she made it to the table, she set the folder down. But something in the quality of her presence shifted. The calibrated assessment running faster, harder, the live comparison against the model working with data it hadn’t been designed to process.

Lyra looked at her.

The stillness. The cooling-temperature hands folded in her lap. The direct gaze that didn’t do the things human gazes did — didn’t perform comfort or discomfort, didn’t manage the interaction, just looked with the full frequency-reading attention of something that experienced people as patterns and was reading Vale’s pattern with complete focus.

The silence lasted four seconds.

”Commander Vale,” Lyra said.

”Ms.—” Vale paused. ”Lyra.”

”Just Lyra,” she said. ”I took it from a street sign. There’s no family name.”

Vale looked at her for another moment.

Sat down.

Opened the folder.

”You’ve been on Mr. Ruren’s vicinity for eighteen days,” she said. ”Off-registry. Off-grid. Your frequency reads on the Association’s ambient monitoring equipment as—” she looked at the page, ”unclassifiable. Which is a category we’ve been expanding recently.”

”I noticed,” Lyra said.

”You’ve been accessing our network.”

”Peripherally,” Lyra said. ”Read-only, mostly. The panel data integration runs on Gate-protocol architecture. I can interface with it.”

”Can,” Vale said. ”Or have.”

”Have,” Lyra said. ”Occasionally. When there was something worth reading.”

Vale made a note.

”The sub-faction,” she said.

”Internal designation FR-7,” Lyra said. ”Sixteen members across four Association divisions. Reports to Deputy Director Hwan Sunil, who has been building a parallel acquisition framework for anomalous Hunters since day four. He assessed Mr. Ruren’s profile when the Tier 3 flag generated and decided the Handler approach was insufficient for the threat vector he’d classified.”

Vale was writing.

She wrote for a long time.

”Threat vector,” she said, without looking up.

”His classification,” Lyra said. ”Not mine. I don’t experience him as a threat vector.”

”How do you experience him,” Vale said.

Lyra held her gaze when Vale looked up.

”Necessary,” she said.

Vale held the gaze.

Looked back at her notes.

”FR-7 has made two physical approaches on this address and one network intrusion attempt,” Vale said. ”Both physical approaches were redirected. The network attempt was flagged and stalled by an interference pattern that doesn’t match any known countermeasure in our system.” She looked at Lyra. ”That was you.”

”Yes,” Lyra said.

”How,” Vale said.

Lyra considered.

”My native frequency interferes with Gate-protocol architecture when I apply it directly,” she said. ”The network runs on that architecture. When I pressed against the intrusion attempt it registered as electromagnetic interference from a Gate formation and the system automatically rerouted.”

”You made a network attack look like a weather event,” Vale said.

”Essentially,” Lyra said.

Vale looked at her for a long moment.

”You’re not a Hunter,” she said.

”No.”

”You’re not human-baseline.”

”No.”

”You came through a sealed dimensional membrane before the Gates opened.”

”Yes.”

”That should be classified as an incursion event,” Vale said. ”Protocol requires—”

”I know what protocol requires,” Lyra said. ”I’ve read your protocol documents. All of them.” She held Vale’s gaze. ”I’m telling you what I am before your assessment tells you something incomplete. That’s a choice I’m making because he asked me to.” She paused. ”I would not have made it otherwise.”

Vale was quiet.

The leather folder open in front of her. The notes she’d been making. The calibrated dark eyes running the assessment with the focused attention of someone who had built a division from scratch in seventy-two hours because she was the kind of person who could.

”What are you,” Vale said.

”Something your classification system doesn’t have a category for,” Lyra said. ”Which I believe is a theme in your recent professional experience.”

Something moved through Vale’s expression.

Brief. Quick. The specific configuration that Dillan had learned, over nineteen days, was her version of genuine reaction before the calibration reasserted itself.

”It is,” she said.

Dillan had been sitting at the end of the couch watching this exchange with the dry internal attention of a man who had stopped being surprised by individual elements and was now simply tracking the overall shape.

The shape of this particular element was — two extraordinarily precise people running assessments on each other simultaneously and both being good enough at it to know the other was doing the same thing.

He thought it was going reasonably well.

He kept that assessment to himself.

”FR-7,” he said. ”What does Vale do about it.”

Both of them looked at him.

”Administratively,” Vale said, ”I escalate to the Director with documented evidence of an unauthorized parallel acquisition framework operating within Association infrastructure. That triggers a formal review that will take approximately three weeks and result in FR-7’s dissolution and Hwan Sunil’s removal from the Deputy Director position.”

”Three weeks during which they know we know,” Dillan said.

”Yes,” Vale said. ”Which means they accelerate.”

”Which means the approaches get less gentle,” he said.

”Correct.”

”What’s the alternative,” he said.

Vale looked at the folder.

”The alternative,” she said carefully, ”involves using the network access your—” she paused, ”—associate has already established to feed FR-7’s monitoring systems false data about your Gate schedule and residential location. This creates a two-to-three week window during which they’re operating on incorrect information while the formal escalation proceeds through back-channels I have access to that don’t trigger the standard review timeline.”

”Faster and cleaner,” he said.

”And operationally grey,” she said. ”The network access component isn’t something I can officially authorize.”

He looked at her.

”You’re telling me you need plausible deniability,” he said.

”I’m telling you that if something were to happen to FR-7’s data feeds in a way that looked like electromagnetic interference from Gate formation activity—” she closed the folder, ”—I would have no means to investigate it or assign responsibility.”

She looked at Lyra.

Lyra looked at her.

”I can do that,” Lyra said.

”I didn’t ask you to do anything,” Vale said.

”No,” Lyra agreed. ”You didn’t.”

The corner of Vale’s mouth moved.

It wasn’t quite a smile.

It was the closest thing to one that Dillan had seen from her.

”Timeline,” she said.

”Today,” Lyra said. ”It’s already partly done. I’ve been feeding interference into their monitoring since the second physical approach.” She tilted her head. ”I needed to know if you’d sanction the formal component before I completed the data modification. It requires Association network architecture I haven’t accessed yet.”

”And now,” Vale said.

”Now I know,” Lyra said.

Vale looked at her for a long moment.

”The access,” she said. ”It stays limited to this specific operation. The FR-7 feeds and the back-channel escalation pathway I’m going to give you the architecture for.”

”Understood,” Lyra said.

”If I find you in any other part of our network—”

”You won’t,” Lyra said. ”I don’t take what I’m not given.” A pause. ”Within operational parameters.”

”Define operational parameters,” Vale said.

”His safety,” Lyra said. ”If his safety requires network access beyond what you’ve authorized, I’ll take it and tell you afterward.”

Vale held her gaze.

”That’s—” she started.

”That’s what I am,” Lyra said. ”I’m not negotiating the parameter. I’m informing you of it.”

Silence.

Dillan watched Vale process the statement with the specific quality of someone encountering a thing that violated their operational framework and deciding, in real time, whether to address the violation or recognize the framework’s limitation.

”Noted,” Vale said finally.

Lyra nodded once.

Vale spent the next forty minutes walking Lyra through the FR-7 network architecture — the specific pathways, the data feeds, the monitoring nodes and the back-channel escalation route that Vale had apparently already prepared in a document she produced from the folder like she’d been waiting for this conversation.

Dillan listened.

He understood perhaps sixty percent of it. The panel data architecture, the network topology, the specific language of institutional systems that Vale spoke with the fluency of someone who had built the thing from scratch. Lyra understood all of it — he could tell from the way she processed the information, not as new learning but as confirmation of something she’d already partially mapped.

They were — precise, together. Both of them. The calibrated institutional intelligence and the frequency-reading dimensional intelligence running parallel on the same problem with the efficient complementarity of two tools designed for different applications discovering they were compatible.

He thought about complementary frequencies.

Thought about how that might not be exclusively his situation.

Filed it.

At the end Vale closed the folder.

Looked at Lyra.

”The Handler Agreement,” she said. ”Mr. Ruren’s file. I’m going to need to add you to the associated personnel section.”

”I’m not personnel,” Lyra said.

”No,” Vale agreed. ”But you’re operating in his vicinity, interacting with Association infrastructure, and conducting protective activities that have direct operational impact on his security profile. That needs formal documentation.”

”Documentation gives FR-7 something to find,” Lyra said.

”The documentation would be classified at my clearance level,” Vale said. ”Which is the highest clearance level in this building.” She held Lyra’s gaze. ”Nothing I put in your file gets accessed by anyone I don’t personally authorize.”

Lyra looked at her.

The assessment running. The frequency-reading going all the way down.

”You’re thorough,” Lyra said.

”I’ve been told,” Vale said.

”You’re also—” Lyra paused. The specific pause of someone choosing whether to say the true thing.

”Also what,” Vale said.

Lyra looked at her directly.

”You feel it too,” Lyra said.

The room went very quiet.

Vale held Lyra’s gaze.

Held it.

”That’s not relevant to the documentation discussion,” Vale said.

”No,” Lyra agreed. ”It’s not.” A beat. ”I’m noting it because I read frequencies and yours has been doing something since you walked in that I don’t think you’re fully aware of.”

”I’m aware of it,” Vale said.

”Okay,” Lyra said simply.

Dillan was looking at the floor.

Specifically at the floor. With the focused attention of someone who had decided that the floor was very interesting and was going to continue being interesting for at least the next thirty seconds.

”The documentation,” Vale said.

”Fine,” Lyra said.

Vale left at 4:15 PM.

At the door she looked at Dillan with the calibrated dark eyes and the not-quite-steady quality she’d been carrying since the Boss clear and that was running slightly louder today.

”The FR-7 situation will be resolved within three weeks,” she said. ”The formal review I’m filing through back-channels will go to Director-level and be actioned without triggering Hwan Sunil’s awareness.”

”Thank you,” he said.

She looked at him.

”The Handler Agreement,” she said. ”The associated personnel section. I’m adding four names.”

He looked at her.

”Sera Voss,” she said. ”Mira Chen. Dana Park. Lyra.” She paused. ”In the order they’re going to appear in your operational structure.”

”That’s a specific order,” he said.

”It’s an accurate order,” she said. ”Based on current proximity and operational integration.”

He held her gaze.

”Vale,” he said.

”Mm.”

”Your name isn’t on that list,” he said.

The not-quite-steady quality.

”I’m the Handler,” she said. ”I’m in a different section.”

”Different section,” he said.

”Different section,” she confirmed.

She held his gaze for a moment that was exactly as long as it needed to be and no longer.

”Good evening, Mr. Ruren,” she said.

She left.

He went back inside.

Lyra was standing at the floor-to-ceiling window with her tea, looking at the city the way she looked at everything — directly, with the full attention of something that was always reading.

”She knows,” he said.

”Yes,” Lyra said.

”What she feels,” he said. ”She knows what it is.”

”She’s known for several days,” Lyra said. ”She’s been deciding what to do with the knowledge.” A pause. ”She’s going to continue deciding for a while. She moves carefully with things that matter to her.”

He stood beside her at the window.

The city. The Gate signatures. The afternoon light doing something with the cloud cover, finding angles, the specific quality of Seoul in the late afternoon of the nineteenth day of the new world.

”The flexible room,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Tonight?” he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

The pull between them steady and quiet, the calibration-correct hum of a system running at the right parameters.

”Tonight,” she said.

She moved in with the specific minimalism of something that had been operating without possessions for eighteen days and had not found this inconvenient.

What she brought from the roof: one bag. Inside the bag: three items.

A cup — the specific kind she’d been sourcing for the roof, the tea she’d been drinking for eighteen days above his ceiling.

A document. Folded, dense with notation in a script that didn’t use any alphabet he recognized. She set it on the desk in the flexible room without explaining it.

And a small object — smooth stone, dark, warm despite her cooling-temperature hands, that she held for a moment before placing it on the windowsill.

He looked at it.

”From home,” she said.

”From your dimension,” he said.

”From before I left,” she said. ”I carried it through the membrane.”

He looked at it.

A smooth dark stone on the windowsill of a fifteenth-floor apartment in Yongsan, Seoul, carried through a dimensional membrane by something that had followed a pull across dimensions and down from a roof and into a room.

”Does it have significance,” he said.

She looked at it for a moment.

”It’s from the place I was when I first felt the pull,” she said. ”The first time the direction registered. The first time I understood that there was a point in the architecture of everything that was—” she paused, ”—mine. Specifically.”

He looked at the stone.

Looked at her.

”How long ago,” he said.

She was quiet.

”A long time,” she said. ”By your calendar, approximately—” she thought about it, ”—six hundred years.”

He stared at her.

”Six hundred years,” he said.

”The pull has been there for six hundred years,” she said. ”You’ve only existed for twenty-two of them. Before that it was—” she looked at the stone, ”—directional. Pointing at a place in the pattern where you were going to be. Not where you were.”

He was quiet for a very long time.

”Six hundred years,” he said again.

”I don’t experience time the way you do,” she said. ”It wasn’t—” she paused, ”—it wasn’t like waiting. It was more like—”

”The calibration error,” he said. ”Running wrong for six hundred years.”

She looked at him.

”Yes,” she said.

He looked at the stone on the windowsill.

Looked at her.

”Lyra,” he said.

”Mm.”

”I’m glad you came down from the roof,” he said.

Something moved through her expression.

Not the human emotional expressions.

Something more fundamental.

The frequency shifting.

”So am I,” she said.

Outside the window Seoul ran its nineteenth-day-of-the-new-world operations. The Gates pulsed. The city breathed. Four frequencies across it oriented themselves toward the fifteenth floor of a Yongsan tower where a fifth frequency had just, for the first time in six hundred years, settled.

Quiet.

Correct.

Home.
