Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

The Layer 5 Gate formation appeared on day thirty-two.

Not day thirty — Dr. Yeon’s projection had said three days after the contact event, and three days after the contact event was day thirty-two, which meant the model was accurate to the hour. He’d told her this when the formation alert came through at 6:47 AM and she’d said I know with the specific quality of a physicist who had been watching the approach data since 4 AM and had been waiting for him to notice.

The alert was different from every previous Gate notification.

Not in format — the standard Hunter Association panel chime, the formation coordinates, the preliminary class assessment. The format was identical.

The content was wrong.

[NEW GATE FORMATION DETECTED — DISTRICT: JUNG-GU][PRELIMINARY CLASS ASSESSMENT: — — —][ERROR: CLASS PARAMETERS EXCEED EXISTING CLASSIFICATION SCALE][SYSTEM NOTE: FORMATION TYPE UNKNOWN][SYSTEM NOTE: DO NOT ENTER WITHOUT SOVEREIGN CLASS AUTHORIZATION]

He read it twice.

The system had invented that last line specifically for this Gate.

Do not enter without Sovereign Class authorization.

He was, currently, the only Sovereign Class Hunter on the planet.

He thought: the system keeps inventing new things for me.

He thought: I should be used to this by now.

He texted the compass simultaneously.

The facility at 7:30 AM.

Everyone present including Dr. Yeon, who had apparently been sleeping at the secondary terminal and had woken up when the formation alert triggered her monitoring system at 6:47 and had been running models since 6:48.

She pulled up the approach data on the main screen.

”Layer 5 confirmed,” she said. ”The frequency signature matches the theoretical model I built from the ambassador’s transmission and Lyra’s baseline cross-referenced with the Layer 4 door’s unlock pattern.” She pointed at the formation’s central signature. ”Different from everything we’ve seen. The Layer 1 through 3 Gates had a wound quality — membrane damage, dimensional stress, the specific texture of something broken. Layer 4 was a door — structured, intentional, built from the other side.” She paused. ”Layer 5 is neither of those.”

”What is it,” he said.

She looked at the data.

”A transmission,” she said. ”The formation pattern isn’t a wound or a door. It’s a signal. Something in Layer 5 is broadcasting — generating a formation specifically to carry information through the membrane.” She held his gaze. ”The Gate isn’t an entry point. It’s a message.”

”A message from whoever placed the seed,” he said.

”Possibly,” she said. ”Or from whatever lives in Layer 5 that the seed passed through on its way here.” She paused. ”The ambassador said Layer 5 is where the seed was placed. Where the origin hunger originated. Which means Layer 5 isn’t just another dimensional layer — it’s the source of what you carry.”

Dana was at the analysis station.

She’d been there since 7:05, the Tracker perception running at its full amplified capacity, building the new category she’d started the moment the formation alert came through.

”The pattern,” she said. ”I can read it.”

Everyone looked at her.

”The formation is structured around the anchor’s absorption history,” she said. ”Not randomly. Not as a mirror the way the SS-class was — that mirrored the compass. This mirrors the absorption sequence.” She looked at the screen. ”Every Gate class we’ve cleared, every essence type you’ve absorbed — it’s all represented in the formation’s frequency map. Like—” she paused.

”Like a record,” Mira said.

”Yes,” Dana said. ”The formation is reading us before we read it. It knows exactly what has been absorbed and what hasn’t.” She looked at Dillan. ”It knows you haven’t touched Layer 5 yet. The formation is—” she stopped.

”Waiting,” Lyra said.

Dana looked at her.

”Yes,” she said. ”Exactly that. Waiting for the next stage of the absorption sequence.”

He held her gaze.

”It’s not a message,” he said to Dr. Yeon. ”It’s an invitation. Specific to the absorption.”

”The origin hunger,” Dr. Yeon said slowly. ”The seed placed in Layer 5 six hundred years ago — it’s been generating this formation since the SS-class absorption completed. The origin hunger reached the limit of what the world’s natural Gates could provide. Layer 5 is the next step in the sequence.” She held his gaze. ”The system couldn’t classify it because the sequence hasn’t been documented before.”

Sera was looking at her medical protocol notes.

She’d been looking at them since the alert came through — the preparation she’d built over the past three days, the framework for what Layer 5 absorption would require.

”The integration cascade from SS-class took forty-eight hours and significant caloric and rest requirements,” she said. ”Layer 5 is deeper than SS-class. The essence density — Dr. Yeon, what’s your projection.”

”Higher than SS by a factor I can’t quantify from the formation data alone,” Dr. Yeon said. ”The Layer 5 frequency signature doesn’t map to any existing scale. It’s—” she looked at the data, ”more complex. Structurally. Like the difference between a single instrument and an orchestra.”

”Orchestra,” Sera said.

”That’s an approximation,” Dr. Yeon said. ”The actual dimensional physics—”

”Orchestra is sufficient,” Sera said. She looked at Dillan. ”The integration cascade from an orchestra-level absorption is going to be—”

”Significant,” he said.

”I was going to say potentially incapacitating,” she said. ”Depending on the absorption rate and the essence density. The SS-class absorption produced a panel cascade and required forty-eight hours of integration. Layer 5 could require—” she paused. ”I don’t know. That’s the honest answer. I don’t know and I don’t have data and I’m going to be running continuous monitoring from the moment you make first contact with the formation.”

He held her gaze.

”You’re not telling me not to go in,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”You’re going in. The origin hunger requires it and the formation is specifically generated for this absorption and declining it isn’t an option in any meaningful sense.” She held his gaze. ”I’m telling you I’m going to be monitoring everything in real time and if the integration cascade becomes dangerous I’m going to intervene whether you want me to or not.”

He held her gaze.

”Okay,” he said.

”Good,” she said. ”Don’t argue with me in there.”

”When have I ever argued with you,” he said.

”You argued with me about eating on day twenty-six,” she said.

”I wasn’t hungry,” he said.

”You were running a primordial integration cascade,” she said. ”You were hungry. You just didn’t know it because the cascade was suppressing the normal hunger signals.” She held his gaze. ”Don’t argue with me in there.”

”Okay,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Okay,” she confirmed.

Vale was on her phone.

She’d been on it since the alert — the institutional response activating, the Director briefed, the diplomatic framework’s Gate-event protocol running.

She looked up from the call.

Held Dillan’s gaze.

Held up three fingers.

He understood: three hours. The formation will be ready in three hours. I’m clearing the site now.

He nodded.

She went back to the call.

Jung-gu district. 10:30 AM.

The formation was — Dr. Yeon had called it a transmission and the word was accurate in a way that became more apparent up close. Previous Gates had a visual quality that registered as wound or door — the specific light and shape of something that was either broken or deliberately opened. This one looked like neither.

It looked like a screen.

A vertical oval of light approximately three meters tall and two wide, hovering at street level with the absolute stillness of something that wasn’t generating the usual Gate turbulence. No subsonic hum. No atmospheric pressure shift. No bruised-sky quality.

Just light.

The specific color of something that was exactly Layer 5 — not the ambient violet of the Resonance Field, not the cold white of the A-class palace, not the warm amber of the earlier Gates. Something in between all of those, the color of something that had been generated specifically to be legible to the anchor’s absorption system.

It pulsed once when he stepped into range.

Slowly.

Like a heartbeat recognizing a heartbeat.

The origin hunger — complete, still, arrived — did something it hadn’t done since the completion.

It moved.

Not the directional pull of before. Not the compass-needle orientation toward essence. Something more like — recognition. The specific quality of the origin hunger encountering something it had been designed to encounter and responding at the level where design and response were the same thing.

This, it said.

This is what comes next.

He looked at the compass around him.

Dana reading the pattern, the Tracker perception running at full capacity. Mira with the rig live, the archive recording everything. Sera with the monitoring station she’d built into a portable configuration that Dana had helped her carry from the facility. Vale on one side — the first Gate she’d entered had been the SS-class and she’d entered every Gate run since without discussion, the fourth bond simply present wherever the anchor went. Lyra on his other side, the stone in her pocket, the complementary resonance running at its full quiet depth.

And behind the compass: Dr. Yeon. Tablet. Two notebooks. The thermos.

”I want to go in,” she’d said at 9 AM.

”It’s not safe,” he’d said.

”I know,” she’d said. ”I want to go anyway.”

He’d looked at Vale.

Vale had looked at Dr. Yeon.

”Stay behind the compass at all times,” Vale had said. ”If Sera tells you to exit, you exit. No arguments.”

”Agreed,” Dr. Yeon had said.

”I mean it,” Vale had said.

”So do I,” Dr. Yeon had said.

They’d looked at each other with the specific quality of two very precise people deciding they trusted each other’s precision.

”Fine,” Vale had said.

He’d looked at both of them.

Had said nothing.

Had decided that the record needed a physicist and the physicist needed to be there and the alternative was arguing with two of the most precise people he’d ever met simultaneously.

He’d signed the liability waiver Dr. Yeon had produced from her second notebook, pre-prepared, which told him she’d been planning to be in this Gate since the contact event.

He reached toward the formation.

The screen-like surface of it — the specific light that was exactly Layer 5 — responded immediately. Not withdrawing, not surging. Orienting. The pulse changing quality from the slow heartbeat recognition to something more active.

Ready, it communicated. Not words. The same direct meaning-transmission as the Gate Bosses. But older. More fundamental.

We have been ready for six hundred years.

He pressed his hand to the surface.

The Layer 5 interior was not a place.

Previous Gate interiors had been places — the D-class stone landscape, the C-class alien geography, the B-class red-bark forest, the labyrinth, the palace, the primordial entity’s chamber, the SS-class mirror city. Each one was a location. A space with dimensions and architecture and things that occupied it.

Layer 5 was a state.

He stepped through the formation and there was no step — the transition was immediate and complete, the membrane between here and there not traversed but simply crossed, and what was on the other side was not a place but a condition.

He existed in Layer 5.

He was aware of the compass beside him — all six of them, the frequencies running at their distinct registers, present and real — but they were present the way frequencies were present in the field, felt rather than seen, the physical dimension of their presence reduced to something more fundamental.

Layer 5 was the origin hunger’s native environment.

That was what he understood immediately — not through analysis or deduction but through the specific recognition of something encountering the space it had been built for. The way a fish understands water not by knowing what water is but by moving through it without resistance.

The origin hunger, which had been complete and still since the center bond’s deepening, woke up.

Not hungry.

Awake.

The difference was specific and significant — the hunger of the first twenty-nine days had been directional, oriented, consuming. This was something else. The origin hunger in its native environment wasn’t looking for something to absorb. It was — he looked for the word — conversing.

The Layer 5 essence, distributed through the state they now occupied, wasn’t waiting to be absorbed. It was communicating. The same essence that the origin hunger had been built to receive, speaking in the language the origin hunger had been built to understand.

He understood it.

What it said was not simple.

He stood in Layer 5 — existed in it, the physical dimension somewhat irrelevant here — and the essence communicated with the patient precision of something that had been prepared for this conversation for six hundred years and had complete confidence in its content.

We are the origin, it said. The source of what you carry. The seed’s native material.

He felt the origin hunger respond — not with absorption, with acknowledgment. The recognition running in both directions.

You were designed, the essence continued. Not the compass — the compass you built yourself, with the frequencies the pull attracted. But the pull itself. The origin hunger. The capacity to absorb and integrate and become. A pause. The design had a purpose.

”Tell me the purpose,” he said. Out loud, in Layer 5, which didn’t carry sound in the standard way but carried meaning with perfect fidelity.

The essence responded.

What it said took a long time to arrive. Not because the communication was slow — because the concept was complex and the meaning-transmission was being careful to be accurate.

The seven-layer architecture of this world’s dimensional space has been — unstable, it said. For longer than six hundred years. Layer 7 — the source, the root, the origin of the architecture — has been generating instability. Not catastrophically. Gradually. The kind of instability that a system develops when its fundamental architecture is — misaligned. When the structure it was built to support has shifted and the architecture hasn’t adjusted.

He held the communication’s thread.

”Misaligned,” he said.

The anchor is the adjustment mechanism, the essence said. The origin hunger, absorbing through the layers in sequence — D through SS for the surface layers, Layer 5 through 7 for the deeper ones — is a recalibration tool. Each absorption integrates the essence of that layer into the anchor’s system, establishing a permanent connection, a load-bearing bond between the anchor and the layer.

He thought about the compass.

About five bonds.

About load-bearing.

”The layers,” he said. ”The absorption from each layer establishes a bond with that layer. The way the compass bonds established a bond with each frequency.”

Yes, the essence said. The compass bonds are the model. The layer bonds follow the same architecture. Genuine. Bilateral. Permanent. The anchor doesn’t just absorb the layer’s essence — it becomes permanently connected to the layer. Load-bearing.

He understood the implication.

”I’m not just absorbing power,” he said. ”I’m reconnecting the layers. Each absorption establishes a permanent bond between me and that layer. The seven-layer architecture connects through me.”

You become the anchor point of the architecture, the essence confirmed. The structural connection between all seven layers and this world. The anchor embedded in the architecture of this world — as the document described — but also embedded in the architecture of the dimensional structure itself. All seven layers, connected through the sovereign anchor.

He held the thread.

”The instability in Layer 7,” he said. ”The recalibration. What caused the misalignment.”

That, the essence said, is what Layer 7 will tell you.

A pause.

We are not Layer 7, it said. We are Layer 5. We know the architecture’s structure. We know the anchor’s purpose. We know that the origin hunger was placed here six hundred years ago because the misalignment had reached a stage where intervention was necessary and a sovereign anchor was the intervention.

What we don’t know, it said, is why the misalignment began.

Layer 7 knows that.

Layer 7 has always known that.

The conversation you need to have is there.

He held the thread.

”But first,” he said. ”The Layer 5 absorption.”

Yes, the essence said. The bond must be established. The connection between the anchor and this layer made permanent. The recalibration requires all seven layers connected through you.

Are you ready.

He felt the compass around him — the six frequencies, their distinct qualities, the specific trust of people who had been present since day two and day eight and day twelve and day one and six hundred years and eleven days and were here now, in Layer 5, which wasn’t a place but was real.

He felt Lyra’s frequency most clearly — the center bond, the complementary resonance, the thing that made all other things possible by existing.

The stone in her pocket.

The pull arrived.

The calibration correct.

The seed having germinated into exactly this.

”Yes,” he said.

Then receive.

The Layer 5 absorption was not like the others.

Not the grab-and-pull of the first D-class Gate. Not the resonance of the apex entities. Not the considered offering of the primordial. Not the mirrored completion of the SS-class.

It was mutual.

The Layer 5 essence didn’t flow into him the way previous essences had. It — integrated. The way two pieces of the same material recognize each other and join. The origin hunger in its native environment receiving the native material the way a frequency receives its match.

Complete.

Instantaneous.

And not painful.

The previous absorptions had carried weight — the processing cascade, the integration period, the caloric demands, the temporary sensory distortion. This had none of that. The Layer 5 essence didn’t require processing because it was already in the correct format. It was the format. The origin hunger’s native material returning to the system it had been separated from.

He felt the bond establish.

Not like the compass bonds — those had been deep and personal and specific to each frequency, the genuine bilateral connection of two things that had chosen each other. This was structural. The load-bearing connection between the anchor and a dimensional layer, permanent and architectural rather than emotional.

But still real.

Still genuine.

The bond doesn’t care whether it’s personal or structural, he thought. Load-bearing is load-bearing.

His panel updated.

[DEVOUR — PASSIVE][LAYER 5 ABSORPTION — COMPLETE][LAYER 5 BOND — ESTABLISHED: PERMANENT][DIMENSIONAL ARCHITECTURE — LAYER 5: CONNECTED][STAT INCREASE: ALL PARAMETERS — SIGNIFICANT][NEW ABILITY: DIMENSIONAL SIGHT — PASSIVE — INSTALLING][SYSTEM NOTE: RECALIBRATION PROGRESS — 1 OF 3 DEEP LAYERS][SOVEREIGN CLASS — RANK 4]

He looked at the last line.

Rank 4.

The system had jumped from Rank 3 to Rank 4 in a single absorption.

Dimensional Sight, the new ability said. He felt it installing — not dramatically, the gradual clarity of a new sense coming online. The seven-layer architecture becoming visible at the edges of his perception, the layers’ distinct frequencies readable the way the compass frequencies were readable through the field.

He could see Layer 5 now.

And through Layer 5 — the faint signal of Layer 6 beyond it.

And beyond Layer 6 — something he couldn’t quite read yet. Something that was waiting with the patience of six hundred years and was aware that he was aware of it.

Layer 7.

The source.

The root.

The architect.

He held the thread.

”We’re coming,” he said.

We know, Layer 5 said, in its final communication before the absorption completed and the bond established and the connection became permanent. We have been waiting.

All of Layer 7 has been waiting.

For exactly this.

They came out of the formation at 11:47 AM.

The transition out was as clean as the transition in — the Layer 5 formation not closing but going quiet, the screen-like surface returning to its slow heartbeat pulse, the bond now established, the connection permanent.

He stood in Jung-gu district with the compass around him and Dr. Yeon behind them and the city doing its thirty-second-day operations in every direction.

He felt different.

Not in the way the previous absorptions had made him feel different — the stat increases, the ability fragment installations, the physical processing cascades. Those had been external additions to an existing system.

This was internal. Structural. The origin hunger having received its native material and established the first of the three deep-layer bonds. The recalibration beginning in earnest.

He looked at his hands.

The Dimensional Sight passive running at its installation quality — still coming online, the layers’ frequencies not yet fully legible but present at the edges of perception, the seven-layer architecture becoming visible the way the field’s ambient read had become visible after the compass completed.

”Dillan,” Sera said.

He looked at her.

She had the monitoring station’s readings on her tablet — continuous data from the moment he’d touched the formation.

She looked at the readings.

Looked at him.

”No cascade,” she said. ”No integration period required. The absorption was—” she paused. ”Clean. The metabolic markers are normal. Better than normal — the Layer 5 bond appears to be actively stabilizing the existing system rather than requiring stabilization itself.”

”The native material,” he said. ”It doesn’t need processing. It’s already in the right format.”

She held his gaze.

”That’s the medical interpretation,” she said. ”Yes.” She looked at the readings. ”Sovereign Class Rank 4. New passive ability installing. All existing parameters elevated.” She paused. ”You feel fine.”

”Yes,” he said.

”That’s medically unprecedented,” she said.

”Everything about me is medically unprecedented,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Don’t say that like it’s a good thing,” she said.

”Isn’t it,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The almost-smile.

Trying not to be there.

Not quite succeeding.

”Come home and eat something,” she said. ”The Rank 4 elevation requires caloric support regardless of the cascade absence.”

”Sera,” he said.

”Mm.”

”You’re the only person who has ever told a Sovereign Class Rank 4 anchor to come home and eat something,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Someone has to,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said. ”Someone does.”

Mira was already broadcasting before they’d walked three blocks.

He felt it through the field — the shift from archive to live, the green indicator going on, the bright directed frequency deploying at full capacity toward the record.

”Chat,” she said, and her voice had the quality it always had when the thing was significant — content-mind and real-mind fully merged, no gap, just her. ”Layer 5. First deep-layer absorption. The anchor absorbed the essence of the layer where the seed was placed six hundred years ago.” She paused. ”He came out fine. No cascade. Clean integration. The medical monitoring confirmed it.” Another pause. ”And the Layer 5 essence communicated. Before the absorption completed. The anchor understands the purpose of the origin hunger now.”

She paused.

”It’s not what any of us expected,” she said.

The concurrent viewer count started climbing.

She didn’t look at it.

”The world’s dimensional architecture is misaligned,” she said. ”Has been for longer than six hundred years. The anchor is the recalibration tool. The origin hunger was placed here to produce an anchor that could absorb through every layer and establish a permanent bond with each one — connecting all seven layers through a single point. Stabilizing the architecture.” She paused. ”Two more deep layers. Layer 6 and Layer 7.”

She looked at the camera.

”Layer 7 is where the answers are,” she said. ”Why the misalignment started. What the architect wants. What the conversation will be.” She held the camera’s gaze. ”I’m going to be there when it happens.”

She looked at Dillan walking ahead of her.

”We all are,” she said.

She broadcast for four more minutes.

Then she switched back to archive.

The number was one hundred and forty million concurrent when she switched.

She didn’t look at it.

She kept walking.

The facility at 2 PM.

The compass assembled around the table.

Dr. Yeon at the secondary terminal, running the Layer 5 bond data through the dimensional architecture model.

Lyra with the stone.

He sat at the center.

Looked at the field.

Five frequencies.

The compass complete.

And underneath it — new.

The Layer 5 bond running at its permanent structural quality. The first of the three deep-layer connections, the recalibration beginning, the seven-layer architecture starting to connect through the anchor.

Dimensional Sight completing its installation — the layers’ frequencies becoming legible at the field’s edges, the architecture visible.

He looked at it.

At the seven concentric rings.

At the point in the center.

At Layer 6 beyond Layer 5.

At Layer 7 beyond that.

At whatever was waiting there.

Whatever had placed the seed.

Whatever had been aware of the pull for six hundred years.

Whatever had built the architecture and watched it misalign and designed the intervention and waited.

He thought: two more.

He thought: Layer 6, then Layer 7.

He thought: the conversation that the architect has been preparing for six hundred years.

He thought about F-minus.

He thought about the system inventing a new letter.

He thought, with the dry humor that had survived everything and would survive this too:

Whatever is in Layer 7 is going to have to deal with the fact that the recalibration tool it designed six hundred years ago to fix its architecture problem is a twenty-two-year-old former guild admin who eats noodles over the sink.

He thought: good luck to them.

He almost smiled.

”Layer 6,” he said, to the room.

”When,” Vale said.

”Dr. Yeon,” he said.

She looked up from the terminal.

”The Layer 5 bond needs seventy-two hours to fully integrate before Layer 6 contact,” she said. ”The architecture requires stabilization at each layer before the next connection is made.” She paused. ”Three days.”

”Three days,” he said.

”Three days,” the compass confirmed.

In various registers.

At various volumes.

All of them genuine.

All of them real.

All of them ready.

The beginning continuing.

As beginnings do.
