Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

At 3:47 PM, every Gate on the planet shifted simultaneously.

Not dramatically. Not collapsing or expanding. Reorienting — the violet pulse that every Gate signature carried, anywhere in the world, anywhere a tear had opened in the past twenty-seven days, changed its rhythm in the same instant. Synchronized. As if every wound in reality had, at the same moment, turned its attention toward the same point on the map.

The Hunter Association’s monitoring floor in Seoul registered it first.

An analyst on the night-adjacent shift looked at her screen, looked again, and called for a supervisor with the specific tone of someone who had just watched every instrument she was responsible for do something simultaneously that none of them were supposed to be capable of doing together.

Within four minutes the alert had reached every Association office on the planet.

Within eleven minutes, every government monitoring Gate activity.

Within twenty, every panel belonging to every registered Hunter in the world.

[GLOBAL SYSTEM NOTIFICATION][ALL GATE SIGNATURES — ORIENTATION SHIFT DETECTED][CAUSE: SOVEREIGN ANCHOR COMPLETION EVENT][LOCATION: SEOUL, REPUBLIC OF KOREA][STATUS: WORLD ARCHITECTURE INTEGRATION — COMPLETE][NO FURTHER ACTION REQUIRED][THIS IS A PERMANENT CHANGE]

Dillan read the notification on his own panel at 4:08 PM, twenty minutes after Vale forwarded it from the Association tower with no commentary attached except a single line: Every government on the planet just received this. Brace for the next forty-eight hours.

He looked at it.

This is a permanent change.

He thought about the document. About eternal anchors and permanently woven into the architecture and this is what you are.

He thought: the world just told eight billion people the same thing it told me twenty minutes ago.

He set the panel down.

Looked at the window.

The city below was — he could feel it, through the completed anchor’s awareness, the field’s radius now covering Seoul in its entirety and extending beyond — different. Not visibly. Not in any way a person walking the street would notice without already knowing what to look for. But structurally. The Gates within his range, all of them, oriented toward the center point that he now was, permanently, completely.

His phone had two hundred missed calls.

He didn’t look at them.

The Yongsan facility’s main room, 5 PM.

All five of them.

For the first time since the completion — not through the field, not in their separate locations giving each other space, but physically present, in the same room, with nothing left between them and nothing left to build toward.

Sera was making tea — the domestic ritual that had become, over twenty-seven days, the closest thing the compass had to a formal gathering signal. She made five cups without being asked how many.

Mira sat with her stream rig dark, the red recording light off, the green broadcast light off. Just off. The first time in twenty-seven days he’d seen her sit with the equipment present and entirely unused.

Dana had her journal open on her knee, pen uncapped, but she wasn’t writing. She was looking at the room — the Tracker perception running its quiet continuous read, not analyzing, just present, just taking in the configuration the way you take in something you’ve been waiting a long time to see complete.

Vale sat in the chair she’d claimed since her first visit, civilian jacket, the not-quite-steady quality no longer something she was managing into stillness.

Lyra stood at the window, the stone returned to its place on the sill, the afternoon sun moving toward evening gold.

Dillan stood in the center.

Looked at all of them.

The full compass.

Complete.

”The global notification,” he said.

”We saw it,” Vale said. ”Every country with a functioning government has now received formal acknowledgment that a sovereign anchor exists, is permanent, and is located in Seoul.” She paused. ”The next forty-eight hours are going to be the most significant diplomatic event since the Gates first opened.”

”What does that mean operationally,” Mira said.

”It means every nation on the planet is going to want a position on you,” Vale said, looking at Dillan. ”Some will want alliance. Some will want study. A small number will want—” she paused, choosing the word carefully, ”containment, despite the fact that containment is structurally impossible and the document is very clear about what happens to coerced attempts against an anchor’s compass.”

”FR-7 found that out,” Dana said.

”FR-7 was an internal sub-faction with limited resources,” Vale said. ”Some of what’s coming will have national military backing.” She held Dillan’s gaze. ”I want to be clear about the scale of what’s beginning.”

”Tell me,” he said.

Vale was quiet for a moment.

”The Association is going to formally request — within the next week, I’d estimate — that the Korean government grant the anchor and the registered compass diplomatic-adjacent status,” she said. ”Not citizenship in the traditional sense. Something new. The legal frameworks don’t exist yet for what you are, so they’re going to have to write new ones.” She paused. ”I’ll be the one writing most of them.”

”You already started,” Dana said. It wasn’t a question — the Tracker perception reading the pattern, the institutional documents Vale had been producing since the restructuring.

”I started the day the FR-7 situation resolved,” Vale confirmed. ”The completion accelerates the timeline. What I expected to need three months for, I now need to deliver in two weeks.”

Dillan held her gaze.

”You’re not worried,” he said.

”I’m thorough,” she said. ”Worry is inefficient. Preparation is useful.” She held his gaze. ”I’ve been preparing.”

He almost smiled.

”Of course you have,” he said.

Sera handed out the tea.

Five cups, the configuration she’d developed without anyone formally assigning it to her — Vale first, then Mira, then Dana, then Lyra, then her own, then she sat down beside Dillan with the specific quality of someone who had found her place in a room without needing to claim it.

”The compass is complete,” she said, into the room. ”I want to say something, and I want to say it now, while we’re all actually here instead of distributed across a five-kilometer radius.”

Everyone looked at her.

”I’ve spent twenty-seven days building structure around something that turned out not to need it,” she said. ”I want to be accurate about what I’ve learned, because I think it’s relevant to all of us, not just me.” She held Dillan’s gaze for a moment, then looked at the others. ”The document says the bond is structural. Permanent. Not contingent on what any of us do.” She paused. ”I think that means the next question isn’t how do we secure this. It’s what do we do with something that’s already secure.”

The room was quiet.

”That’s a good question,” Mira said.

”It’s the only question that matters now,” Sera said. ”The completion condition is met. The world has acknowledged it. Vale is going to spend two weeks writing law that didn’t exist yesterday.” She looked around. ”And the five of us are going to spend — I don’t know how long — figuring out what a permanent, complete, world-acknowledged compass actually does with itself.”

”Lives,” Lyra said, from the window.

Everyone looked at her.

”The document doesn’t describe what happens after completion in detail,” she said. ”Because the three previous anchors in my world’s history each built something different. The completion isn’t an ending. It’s a foundation. What gets built on it is—” she paused, ”not predetermined.”

”What did the others build,” Dana asked.

Lyra was quiet for a moment.

”One became a protector,” she said. ”Defended its world’s architecture against incursions for the rest of its existence. Another became a teacher — trained the next generation of Hunters in a system that didn’t exist before it.” She paused. ”The third — the one I told Vale about. The one whose compass never completed. It’s still searching.”

The room absorbed that.

”And us,” Dillan said.

Lyra looked at him.

”That’s not mine to answer,” she said. ”It’s the compass’s. All five points and the center. Together.”

He held her gaze.

Looked around the room.

At Sera, who had built her entire life around structure and had just suggested, with the directness she’d only recently learned to deploy, that the structure’s purpose needed reconsidering. At Mira, who had documented the most significant event in Hunter history and had turned off her stream three times for things that mattered more than the record. At Dana, who had known him for eight years before any of this and had the patience to read a pattern all the way down. At Vale, who was already writing the laws that would let a sovereign anchor exist inside a functioning nation-state. At Lyra, six hundred years of pull resolved into a stone on a windowsill and a quiet certainty that whatever came next would be built, not given.

”I want to keep clearing Gates,” he said. ”Not because the origin hunger requires it anymore — it’s complete, it doesn’t need feeding the way it did before. But because the Gates are still opening. People are still dying in them. I have a capacity now that almost nobody else has.”

”That’s the protector model,” Lyra said.

”Maybe,” he said. ”I don’t know if it’s the only thing. But it’s the first thing.”

Vale was already nodding, the institutional mind running ahead. ”If the Association formalizes your operational status, you could clear the highest-class Gates that standard Hunter teams can’t survive. The fatality rate on A-class and above has been—”

”Vale,” Sera said.

Vale stopped.

”Let him finish a sentence before you build the framework around it,” Sera said. Not sharp. Just direct.

Vale looked at her. Then at Dillan.

”Sorry,” she said.

”You’re allowed to be you,” he said. ”I like that you’re already three steps ahead. I just want the first step to be mine.”

She held his gaze. Something settled in her expression — not retreat, recalibration.

”Go on,” she said.

He looked at the room.

”I want to keep clearing Gates,” he said again. ”And I want all of you with me, in whatever configuration makes sense for each Gate — Sera and her barriers, Mira’s tactical read, Dana’s pattern recognition, Lyra’s — whatever Lyra does that none of us fully understand yet, and Vale’s institutional cover making sure none of it turns into another FR-7.” He paused. ”And I want this place to actually be a home. Not a facility. Not an operational base with a flexible room for support staff.” He looked at each of them in turn. ”A home. With five people in it who are there because they chose to be, every day, not because a compass said they had to be.”

The room was quiet.

”That’s not really a plan,” Dana said. ”That’s just — a description of right now.”

”Maybe that’s the point,” he said. ”The completion condition is met. We don’t have anything left to build toward in the urgent sense. What’s left is just—” he searched for the word.

”Living,” Mira said.

He looked at her.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I don’t have a category for that in my content calendar,” she said.

”Make one,” he said.

She almost smiled.

”I will,” she said.

The evening settled.

Sera refilled the tea. Dana finally started writing in her journal — not urgent notes, just the slow accumulation of an ordinary evening being recorded the way she’d been recording everything since day one, except now the handwriting matched what it had become rather than what it used to be. Mira ran through the day’s footage with the rig dark, editing for herself rather than for seventy million people, occasionally reading a line of commentary out loud and asking the room if it sounded honest. Vale worked through a draft document on her tablet but stopped every few minutes to actually be in the room rather than just occupying a chair in it. Lyra sat at the window with the last of the sunlight, the stone in her hand, not reading anything, not translating anything — just there.

Dillan moved between all of them.

Not managing. Not orienting the room around himself the way the Dominance Aura once had. Just present — checking in, sitting beside one and then another, letting the field carry the ambient quality of an evening that had no agenda beyond itself.

At 9 PM his panel chimed once, quietly.

He looked at it.

[SYSTEM NOTE: GATE FREQUENCY PROJECTION — UPDATED][NEXT MAJOR FORMATION: ESTIMATED 6 DAYS][CLASSIFICATION: UNKNOWN — WORLD ARCHITECTURE GENERATING NEW GATE TYPE][NOTE: THIS GATE IS NOT CALIBRATED TO COMPLETION. ITS PURPOSE IS DIFFERENT.]

He read it twice.

Looked up.

Five frequencies in the room, each one feeling the notification land through the field a half-second after he read it.

”Different purpose,” Vale said, already reading it on her own panel.

”The completion condition is done,” Dillan said. ”This isn’t about that.”

”Then what is it about,” Sera said.

Lyra looked up from the window.

The stone in her hand.

”I don’t know,” she said. ”There’s no precedent in the document. The three previous anchors in my world didn’t generate a new Gate type after completion.” She held Dillan’s gaze. ”This is something the world is doing on its own. Not in response to the origin hunger. In response to—”

She paused.

”To what,” he said.

She looked at the stone.

”To having you,” she said simply. ”Permanently. The world knows what it has now. Maybe it’s going to start asking for things.”

The room was quiet.

Outside, the Seoul evening continued — the city’s twenty-seventh day finally giving way to twenty-eight, the Gate signatures oriented and steady, the world that had just been formally told a sovereign anchor lived inside it beginning, slowly, to figure out what that meant.

Six days.

A new kind of Gate.

A different purpose.

Dillan looked at the five frequencies around him — complete, permanent, woven into the architecture of what he was — and felt, for the first time since a Tuesday morning and a bowl of cold noodles, something that wasn’t hunger and wasn’t waiting and wasn’t even relief.

Just steadiness.

The compass, holding.

”Six days,” he said. ”We’ll find out together.”

Sera poured more tea.

Mira’s stream rig stayed dark.

Dana kept writing.

Vale set down her tablet.

Lyra closed her hand around the stone.

And the new world, twenty-eight days old, settled into its first night with a sovereign anchor fully realized inside it — five points, one center, and whatever was coming next.
