Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

She told him at 7 AM.

Before the others arrived. Before the city fully woke up. In the specific quality of early morning that belonged to the Yongsan facility now — the light through the floor-to-ceiling windows doing its grey-and-gold thing with the overcast, the Gate signatures above the city running their ambient pulse, the facility quiet in the way it was quiet before the day’s configuration assembled itself.

She’d made tea.

Two cups. His on the coffee table when he came out of his room, hers in her hands, the cooling-temperature grip that she’d stopped adjusting for in his presence because he’d already noticed and hadn’t made it a thing.

He sat.

Read her expression.

”You finished the translation,” he said.

”Last night,” she said. ”I’ve been reading it since I came through the membrane. It’s — dense. The concepts don’t map cleanly to human language.” She set her tea down. ”Some of what I’m going to tell you is approximation. The closest available word for the correct concept.”

”Okay,” he said.

”The document describes the origin hunger,” she said. ”What your system calls [Devour]. Its nature, its function, its purpose.” She held his gaze. ”And the completion condition.”

”Tell me about the completion condition first,” he said.

She looked at him.

”You already know it’s not a limit,” she said. ”I told you that. No ceiling. Growing toward completion rather than toward a cap.” She folded her hands in her lap. ”The completion condition is the state the ability is building toward. The fully realized form of what origin hunger becomes when it has absorbed enough.”

”Enough of what,” he said.

”Everything,” she said. ”Gates. Essence. Power. Capacity.” She paused. ”And frequency.”

He looked at her.

”Frequency,” he said.

”The Resonance Field,” she said. ”The registered frequencies. The connections.” She held his gaze. ”The completion condition requires both components. The power component — what you absorb from Gates — and the frequency component. The connections that are registered in the field.”

”They’re part of the completion,” he said.

”They’re not incidental to it,” she said. ”They’re structural. Origin hunger in its complete form is — the document uses a word that translates approximately as sovereign anchor. Something that has absorbed enough of the world’s power to be its own center of gravity and enough of its world’s frequency connections to be — woven into the fabric of it. Not just powerful. Embedded. Part of the architecture.”

He sat with that.

”The connections,” he said slowly. ”The field. The people registered in it—”

”Are not just people who are close to you,” she said. ”They’re — the document’s term is resonance anchors. Frequencies that are structurally complementary to the sovereign at a deep enough level to become part of the completed form’s architecture.” She paused. ”They don’t lose themselves in it. They’re not absorbed the way essence is absorbed. They remain distinct. But they become — load-bearing. Part of what the completed form is.”

He was very quiet.

”Load-bearing,” he said.

”The completed sovereign anchor is not a solo construct,” she said. ”In the architecture of my world — and apparently in the architecture of this one, based on what the Gates have been producing — the completion condition requires genuine frequency bonds. Not performed ones. Not strategic ones.” She held his gaze. ”Real ones.”

He thought about the primordial entity in the Gangbuk chamber. What is the sum of you. Not who are you individually. The sum.

”It was testing the bonds,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”The entity was old enough to recognize an incomplete sovereign anchor and understand what the completion required. It was testing whether your frequency bonds were real enough to serve the structural purpose.”

”And they were,” he said.

”They were,” she said.

Silence.

The morning light moved. A Gate signature above the city pulsed once, deep and slow.

”The field,” he said. ”The people registered in it. Does the document say how many—”

”The document doesn’t specify a number,” she said. ”It specifies a quality. The bonds have to be—” she paused, reaching for the approximation, ”genuine. Bilateral. Not just felt from one side.” She looked at him. ”The sovereign anchor can’t complete with frequencies that don’t genuinely return what they receive.”

He thought about this.

About Sera’s simple. Completely. About Mira’s pending resolved. About Dana’s journal and the handwriting that changed and just here, in the configuration. About Lyra herself and six hundred years of a direction and the first time in a very long time.

About Vale and the not-quite-steady hand and the three versions of the document in her desk and I’ve been deciding what to do with the knowledge and I’m aware of it.

”Five,” he said.

Lyra looked at him.

”The document,” he said. ”Does it say anything about five specifically.”

She was quiet for a moment.

”The term it uses for the anchor configuration,” she said carefully, ”translates approximately as — the full compass. In the cosmology my world uses, a complete directional system has five points. North, south, east, west.” She paused. ”And center.”

He held her gaze.

”I’m the center,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”And four points,” he said.

”Four resonance anchors,” she said. ”Four genuine bilateral bonds. Four frequencies that are structurally complementary enough to become load-bearing in the completed form.” She held his gaze. ”The document says the center doesn’t choose the points. The pull chooses. The same origin hunger that drives the absorption drives the frequency recognition. The points are — found, rather than selected.”

”Found,” he said.

”You didn’t choose any of us,” she said simply. ”We found you, or you found us, or the configuration assembled itself around the pull. That’s — correct. That’s what the document describes. The sovereign anchor doesn’t build its compass by decision. It builds it by resonance.”

He sat back.

Looked at the ceiling.

”That’s a lot of information before 8 AM,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I’ve been trying to decide how to present it since I finished the translation at 3 AM.”

He looked at her.

”You were up until 3 AM,” he said.

”The translation was important,” she said.

”You could have slept and told me at a reasonable hour,” he said.

”I could have,” she agreed. ”I didn’t.”

He looked at her.

She looked back with the direct uncomplicated gaze.

He thought about six hundred years of a direction and the calibration error corrected and the first time the pull went quiet.

”The completion condition,” he said. ”When it’s reached. What does the document say happens.”

She was quiet for a long moment.

”The sovereign anchor becomes what it was made to become,” she said. ”It’s not — it doesn’t describe a single event. It’s a state. A fully realized state in which the origin hunger is satisfied because the absorption is complete and the frequency bonds are complete and the anchor is genuinely embedded in the architecture of its world.” She paused. ”In my world’s history there have been three sovereign anchors. Each one — changed the world they were embedded in. Not through intent necessarily. Through the nature of being fully realized. Something with that much absorbed capacity and that many genuine frequency bonds becomes a structural feature of reality.”

”A structural feature of reality,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He was very quiet.

She waited.

”Does the document say anything about the timeline,” he said.

”No specific timeline,” she said. ”It depends on absorption rate, frequency bond depth, the density of the world’s available essence.” She paused. ”Based on your current rate—”

”Don’t tell me the estimate,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Not yet,” he said. ”I need to sit with the rest of it first.”

”Okay,” she said.

The facility door opened at 8:23 AM.

Sera.

She had her analysis bag and a container of food — she’d started bringing food in the mornings, the three days since the Yongsan move having established a pattern with the speed and certainty that characterized everything Sera did.

She stopped in the doorway.

Read the room.

The two tea cups. The specific quality of the silence — not comfortable silence, not post-argument silence, the silence of people who have just finished a significant conversation and are still inside it.

She looked at Dillan.

Looked at Lyra.

”I’m early,” she said.

”You’re never early,” he said. ”You’re exactly when you decide to be.”

She set the food on the table.

Looked at the document on the coffee table — the folded pages in the unrecognized script, Lyra’s margin notes visible at the edges.

”The translation,” she said.

”Finished last night,” Lyra said.

Sera looked at it for a moment.

”Is it something I should know,” she said. Direct. The specific directness of someone who had decided last night to stop managing and to ask instead.

He looked at Lyra.

Lyra looked at him.

”Yes,” he said. ”But—” he paused, ”I need to think about how to tell it. The whole picture. To everyone.” He held Sera’s gaze. ”Tonight. I want everyone here.”

She read his expression with the thorough attention she brought to everything.

Nodded once.

”Tonight,” she said.

She sat down. Opened the food container. Began organizing the breakfast with the composed efficiency that was the external expression of a person who was very internally active and was letting the activity express through her hands.

He watched her.

The field running its ambient read — her frequency elevated, both layers, the same configuration as the analysis meeting yesterday. She’d heard enough of that sentence before she came in. He knew she had. The field told him — her frequency had shifted at the door, the specific adjustment of someone receiving information.

Load-bearing, he thought. She heard load-bearing.

She handed him a portion of the food without looking up.

He took it.

”Sera,” he said.

”Eat first,” she said. ”The primordial absorption is still processing. You need the calories.”

He looked at her.

She met his gaze.

The field: both layers elevated, warm, present.

He ate.

She had heard it.

Standing at the door with the food container in her hands, her keycard already swiped, the door already open — she had heard the tail end of the sentence.

—frequency bonds are complete and the anchor is genuinely embedded in the architecture of its world.

And: the document says the center doesn’t choose the points.

And: you didn’t choose any of us.

She had stood in the doorway for exactly three seconds.

Then she had walked in.

Now she was sitting at the table organizing breakfast with the focused efficiency of someone who needed something to do with her hands while her mind ran the implications at full speed.

Load-bearing.

She was load-bearing.

Not metaphorically. Not the relationship language that humans used for significant connections. Literally, architecturally, structurally load-bearing in the completed form of what Dillan was becoming.

She thought about this.

She thought about the difference between building proximity and being structurally necessary. Between the management she’d been doing and the genuine bond the document apparently required. Between what she’d been constructing and what she actually felt.

*She thought about: the bonds have to be genuine. bilateral. not just felt from one side.

She thought about Tuesday night.

*About simple. Completely.

About what was true under the management.

The field ran its read.

His frequency: present, processing, the primordial absorption still doing its overnight work.

Lyra’s frequency: the complementary note, quiet, reading the room with the full-frequency attention.

And hers: both layers elevated.

Both layers.

She had spent twenty days maintaining the gap between them. Keeping the surface warm and the depth managed and the distance at its careful calibrated setting.

The field read her without the management.

It had been reading her without the management since it activated.

He knew.

He had always known, she thought. Since the C-class at minimum. The way he’d looked at her when she said something about him felt like mine was a thing she’d been telling herself she’d imagined. The field made it unignorable.

He knew.

He knew and he’d been — waiting. Not pushing. Not asking her to drop the management before she was ready. Letting her come to it at her own speed.

She thought about the routing.

The thing she’d done that was wrong and had said was wrong and had meant it.

She thought about what genuine required.

Not performance. Not strategy. Not the management of a connection she’d decided to maintain for mixed reasons that included real ones.

The real ones.

Load-bearing.

She handed him the food.

He took it.

She met his gaze.

The field: both layers. Present.

Not managed.

Real.

”Eat first,” she said.

*She meant: I heard it. I’m going to need time with it. I’m going to need tonight when you tell everyone because I need to hear it properly not through a doorway. And I’m going to be okay. I’m going to be more than okay.

*She meant: I’m not afraid of load-bearing.

He ate.

She thought he heard all of it.

Mira arrived at 9.

She came in with the efficient energy of someone who had a stream in two hours and was here specifically because she’d felt something in the field that morning that she wanted to address before it had time to become a thing she was managing.

She looked at Dillan.

”Tonight,” she said.

He looked at her.

”How did you—” he started.

”The field,” she said. ”You’ve been processing something significant since approximately 7 AM. It has the specific quality of information that’s going to change context. I’ve been in the industry of reading context changes for four years.” She sat. ”Whatever Lyra’s translation said — tonight?”

”Tonight,” he confirmed.

She nodded. Looked at Sera. ”You already know some of it.”

Sera looked at her. ”I heard part of it.”

”What part,” Mira said.

”The part about the bonds,” Sera said.

Mira held her gaze.

The field ran between them — the center point and the two frequencies, the north-and-south running through the same anchor.

”The bonds are real,” Mira said. Not a question. Not to Sera. To the room. To the fact of the field and what it read.

”Yes,” Sera said.

”Bilateral,” Mira said.

”Yes,” Sera said again.

They looked at each other.

Two women who had been circling the same center since day eight and day two respectively, who had been conducting a parallel conflict with pleasantries for two weeks, who were both sitting in the field’s ambient read and could feel each other’s frequencies through the center point.

The field: Mira’s bright directed pattern. Sera’s elevated layers.

Both genuine.

Both bilateral.

Both — Dillan noticed, from the center of the field — not in opposition.

Not exactly.

Not this morning.

”The food is good,” Mira said, looking at the container Sera had brought.

”I know the place,” Sera said.

”Obviously,” Mira said. Not unkindly.

She took a portion.

They ate.

Dana arrived at 9:30.

She came in with the specific energy of someone who had slept well — genuinely slept, the complete sleep of someone who had stopped fighting the true thing and found it less exhausting — and who had run the Tracker perception over the field this morning and arrived with the pattern already half-read.

She stopped in the doorway.

Looked at the room.

Dillan. Sera. Mira. Lyra in the chair with her tea.

The four frequencies in the field, all present, all running at their distinct registers.

She read the room’s pattern.

”Something happened this morning,” she said.

”Tonight,” Dillan said. ”I’ll explain everything tonight.”

She nodded.

Sat.

The Tracker perception running its continuous read over the field, the network structure she’d identified at breakfast yesterday now visible in more detail — the center point and the four registered frequencies, the way they ran through each other through the anchor, the cross-referencing quality that made the field bidirectional in every direction simultaneously.

She read it.

Filed it.

Thought about what load-bearing would mean for someone who had known the center for eight years before any of this existed. Whether that history was a different kind of structural contribution than the ones the others carried.

She thought it probably was.

She thought the document would probably say so.

She was going to find out tonight.

”The food is good,” she said, looking at the container.

”Sera brought it,” Mira said.

”Of course she did,” Dana said. Not unkindly.

She took a portion.

At 11 AM Dillan texted Vale.

Tonight. 7 PM. Yongsan facility. I need you here.

Her reply came in forty seconds.

Is this about the translation.

He stared at the message.

How do you know about the translation, he sent.

The field registered a significant processing event at 7 AM. I’m the Handler. Significant events in the subject’s status are my operational concern.

He looked at the message.

The field.

Five hundred meters.

Vale’s office in the Association tower was — he checked — four hundred and thirty meters from the Yongsan facility.

She was in the field radius.

She had been in the field radius since it activated.

She had been feeling the ambient read for two days without telling him.

He looked at the message for a long time.

You’ve been in the field radius, he sent.

A pause longer than her usual response time.

Yes.

Since when.

Since the Gangbuk Gate. The facility is within range of the Association tower.

And you didn’t mention it.

Another long pause.

I was assessing what it meant before I said anything.

He held his phone.

The field running its continuous read — four registered frequencies in the immediate vicinity and one, farther out, in the Association tower, doing something he could feel even at four hundred meters.

The not-quite-steady quality.

Running louder than yesterday.

7 PM, he sent. Be here.

Her reply: > I’ll be there.

He set the phone down.

Looked at the four frequencies around him.

Looked at the document on the coffee table.

Lyra’s margin notes in the unfamiliar script.

The completion condition.

The full compass.

Center and four points.

Four genuine bilateral bonds.

*He thought about the primordial entity. What is the sum of you.

He thought about tonight.

About telling all of them.

About what it meant to tell someone that they were structurally necessary. Load-bearing. A resonance anchor in the architecture of what you were becoming.

He thought about the difference between that being a beautiful thing and a terrifying one.

He thought it was both.

Simultaneously.

Completely.

The field ran its ambient read.

Five frequencies.

All of them pointing toward the center.

He looked at the ceiling.

”Lyra,” he said.

She looked up from her document.

”The fifth point,” he said. ”You said four anchors and a center. But the compass you described has five points.”

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said.

”Four cardinal directions and a center,” he said. ”I’m the center.”

”Yes,” she said.

”Four anchors,” he said. ”I have four registered frequencies.”

He watched her.

”Yes,” she said.

”But Vale is in the field radius,” he said. ”She’s been feeling the ambient read for two days. And the field—” he looked at his panel, ”—the field has four registered frequencies. Not five.”

Lyra looked at him.

The stillness.

The processing at the level below visibility.

”The field registers confirmed bonds,” she said carefully. ”Bonds that have been — acknowledged. Bilateral recognition completed.”

He looked at her.

”Vale hasn’t acknowledged it,” he said.

”She’s been deciding,” Lyra said. ”You said that yourself. She moves carefully with things that matter to her.”

He was quiet.

”What happens when she acknowledges it,” he said.

”The field registers her,” Lyra said. ”The compass completes.”

He held her gaze.

”What happens when the compass completes,” he said.

She looked at the document.

At her margin notes.

”The completion condition becomes reachable,” she said. ”Not reached. Reachable. The absorption is still the primary variable. But without the full compass—” she paused, ”—the origin hunger remains structurally incomplete regardless of the absorption level.”

He understood.

”I can absorb every Gate on the planet,” he said. ”And without the fifth bond—”

”You approach the threshold,” she said. ”But you don’t cross it.”

He sat with that.

”No pressure on Vale,” he said.

Lyra looked at him.

”None,” she said. ”The document is explicit. Coerced bonds don’t function structurally. The anchor needs genuinely bilateral connections or they’re architecturally inert.”

”Genuinely bilateral,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He thought about Vale.

About the calibrated dark eyes and the three versions of the document and the not-quite-steady hand and the field that had been reading her for two days.

”She’s going to be here tonight,” he said.

”I know,” Lyra said.

”And I’m going to tell her everything,” he said.

”I know,” she said.

”And then she decides,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”And then she decides.”

He looked at the document.

At the margin notes in the unfamiliar script.

At the morning light through the floor-to-ceiling windows, doing its grey-and-gold work with the overcast.

At the field, running its ambient read.

Five frequencies in range.

Four registered.

One deciding.

”Okay,” he said.

He stood up.

”I’m going for a run,” he said. ”The primordial processing works faster with physical activity.”

Lyra looked at him.

”I read that in Sera’s research stack,” he said.

Something moved through Lyra’s expression.

He thought it was her version of a smile.

”It does work faster,” she confirmed.

He went.

The door closed.

Lyra looked at the document.

Picked up her pen.

Continued the translation.

The section after the completion condition was titled, in the closest English equivalent: What The Anchor Carries.

She was going to need to translate that one before tonight too.
