Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Lyra finished the translation at 4 AM.

She sat at the desk in the flexible room with the document and her margin notes and the Gate research stack she’d been cross-referencing and the specific quality of deep-night quiet that belonged to the hours when the city’s ambient frequency dropped low enough that her own frequency could run at full capacity without the interference of eight million people going about their lives.

She read the completed translation once.

Then again.

Set the pen down.

Looked at the stone on the windowsill.

What The Anchor Carries was — more than she’d expected. She had known the section existed. She had known its title. She hadn’t known, until the translation was complete, the specific weight of what it contained.

She sat with it until 5 AM.

Then she went to make tea.

He found her in the kitchen at 6:15.

He’d been awake since five — the origin hunger’s new quality, the waiting that had replaced the constant directional pull, operating differently in sleep than the previous twenty-two days’ version had. Not uncomfortable. Just present. A new baseline.

She handed him tea without being asked.

He took it.

Looked at her.

”You finished,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”You’ve been sitting with it since you finished,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”That’s — not your usual response to information,” he said.

She held her cup.

”No,” she said. ”It’s not.”

He waited.

She looked at the window. At the pre-dawn Seoul sky, the Gate signatures visible even in the early light, the bruised violet pulse that had become as natural as sunrise in twenty-three days.

”The section describes what the anchor carries,” she said. ”Not what it absorbs. What it carries. The distinction matters.”

”Tell me,” he said.

She looked at him.

”The completed compass creates a bidirectional protective structure,” she said. ”Not the Resonance Field’s awareness function. Something deeper. The anchor’s accumulated power — everything you’ve absorbed, everything you’re becoming — doesn’t just sit in you. It extends through the field’s frequency bonds.” She paused. ”Into the registered frequencies.”

He held his cup.

”Into them,” he said.

”The anchor carries the compass,” she said. ”That’s the document’s phrasing. The five-point structure isn’t just a relationship. It’s a protective architecture. What you carry — the power, the Sovereign Class capacity, the absorption depth — becomes ambient protection for every registered frequency within field range.”

He looked at her.

”I’m protecting them,” he said. ”Through the field. Passively.”

”The document describes it as — the anchor’s power becoming the compass’s shield,” she said. ”Anything that threatens a registered frequency within field range registers to the anchor’s system as a threat to itself.” She held his gaze. ”Not metaphorically. Literally. The [Devour] passive, the Dominance Aura, the full Sovereign Class capacity — they orient toward threats to registered frequencies the same way they orient toward essence in a Gate.”

He was quiet.

”The same way,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

He thought about the hunger. About the way it oriented toward things — the compass-needle focus, the specific direction that had nothing to do with choice.

”If someone threatens one of them,” he said slowly.

”The anchor responds,” she said. ”Without decision. Without deliberation. The same instinctive orientation that [Devour] uses in a Gate.” She paused. ”The document’s three historical anchors — in each case, the threats to registered frequencies that occurred after compass completion were—” she paused again, ”—resolved. Completely. With a speed and completeness that the anchors themselves didn’t always fully control.”

He held her gaze.

”They didn’t always fully control it,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”The protective response is — the document uses a word that translates approximately as absolute. The anchor’s response to compass threats doesn’t scale to the level of threat. It responds at full capacity regardless.”

The kitchen was very quiet.

”Full capacity,” he said. ”Which currently means Sovereign Class Rank 2.”

”Yes,” she said.

He looked at his hands.

Thought about FR-7. About the sub-faction that had been finding his address and being redirected. About the things that had been circling his orbit since the Tier 3 flag.

About five frequencies registered in his field.

”Lyra,” he said.

”Mm.”

”FR-7 is still active,” he said. ”Vale’s back-channel escalation is in process but it’s going to take—”

His phone rang.

Vale.

6:23 AM.

He answered.

”FR-7 moved last night,” she said. Her voice was the specific precise calm of someone delivering bad news with the management that prevented bad news from becoming worse news. ”While we were at the facility. They ran a parallel operation — physical and network simultaneously. The physical team went to the old address first, found it empty, cross-referenced to the new facility.” A pause. ”They have the Yongsan address.”

He held the phone.

The field — running its ambient read. Vale’s frequency, sharp and controlled, four hundred meters and closing. She was moving.

”That’s not the problem,” she said.

”What’s the problem,” he said.

”The network component,” she said. ”They accessed Mira Chen’s Hunter profile through the Association’s public registry. She has a formal association with you in the associated personnel file — my documentation, last night’s amendment. They pulled her residential address from the guild registry.” A pause. ”Stormfront Guild’s database was accessed at 3 AM. They have her home address.”

He was already moving.

The field — Mira’s frequency. Across the city. Four kilometers. Bright and directed and—

Present. Still there. Still running.

But something was happening at the edges of it.

He felt it the way he’d felt the sub-boss’s intelligence in the C-class Gate — the specific quality of threat registering before the threat fully materialized. The hunger turning from its waiting state and orienting.

There, it said.

There.

”Mira,” he said.

”I have a team moving to her address,” Vale said. ”ETA eleven minutes. But Dillan—”

”I’m faster,” he said.

He was already at the door.

Lyra was beside him.

He hadn’t asked. She was simply there — the complementary frequency, the pull between them running at a different quality than the waiting it had been since last night. The same directionality as the hunger. Pointed at the same threat.

”I’m faster than you,” she said.

”I know,” he said. ”Come anyway.”

They moved.

Four kilometers.

He covered it in — not human time. Sovereign Class Rank 2, the B-class speed transfer compounded by the C-class and the ecosystem Gate and the palace court and the primordial entity, the accumulated reflex and velocity of every absorption stacked and integrated and running at full operational capacity for the first time in a non-Gate environment.

The city was pre-dawn quiet. The streets were—

He moved through them.

Lyra moved differently — not faster exactly, but without the friction of physical space in the way she moved through it, the dimensional-adjacent quality of something that experienced obstacles as suggestions rather than facts.

They arrived at the same moment.

Mira’s building was a residential tower in Mapo, twelve floors, the kind of building that housed content creators and young professionals and people who needed good internet and didn’t need much else.

Two men in the lobby.

He felt them through the field before he saw them — not registered frequencies, not Hunter crystalline sharpness, something in between. FR-7 operatives had Hunter-adjacent training without the full crystalline sharpness of registered combat Hunters. The hunger read them as — threats. Clearly. Completely. With the absolute orientation the document had described.

He walked through the lobby door.

They turned.

One reached for something at his jacket.

The [Devour] passive activated.

Not on the man. On what he was reaching for — the device, the specific energy signature of Association-grade equipment running on Gate-protocol architecture. The hunger found it and pulled the activation essence out of it in under a second.

The device died.

The man looked at his hand.

The second operative was already moving — trained response, professional, not panicking — toward the elevator controls.

Lyra was between him and the elevator before he completed the first step.

She didn’t touch him.

She just — stood there. In the specific quality of her presence when she was fully operational, the not-quite-human frequency running at its real register rather than the managed human-baseline she usually maintained.

The operative stopped.

Looked at her.

Made the specific expression of a person whose training had not included whatever this was.

”Building security has been notified,” Lyra said. ”The Association Handler assigned to this location has a team four minutes out. You have a decision to make about the next four minutes.”

The operative looked at her.

Looked at Dillan.

Looked at the dead device in his colleague’s hand.

Made the correct decision.

They left.

Tenth floor. Unit 1007.

He knocked.

Silence for three seconds.

Then: ”Who is it.” Her voice. Clear. Present. The bright directed frequency running at elevated intensity — she’d been awake, he realized. The field had been telling him that and he’d been moving too fast to read the detail.

”Dillan,” he said.

A pause.

The door opened.

She was in — not what she’d usually present. Sleep clothes. Hair loose in the specific way of someone who’d been awake at 4 AM and hadn’t made decisions about their appearance. One hand still on the door frame, the other holding her phone, the stream rig on the desk behind her with a red indicator light that told him she’d been recording.

She looked at him.

At Lyra beside him.

At whatever she read in his expression.

”FR-7,” she said.

”They had your address,” he said. ”Two operatives in your lobby. Vale’s team is four minutes out.”

She absorbed this.

Looked at her phone.

”I felt something in the field at 3 AM,” she said. ”When they accessed the guild database. I didn’t know what it was — I felt your frequency shift and I started recording.” She looked at the stream rig. ”I’ve been recording for three hours.”

He looked at the rig.

”Is it live,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”Local only. I was documenting in case—” she paused. ”In case something happened and there needed to be a record.”

He looked at her.

She looked back at him with the direct dark eyes that were doing something he hadn’t seen from them before — not the content-mind and not the real-mind running simultaneously. Just the real one. Alone. In the pre-dawn light of her apartment with her hair loose and her phone in her hand and the field running between them at its full bilateral register.

”You were scared,” he said.

She looked at him.

”I was — aware of the threat,” she said, with the precision of someone who had decided that scared was less accurate than aware.

”Mira,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said. ”I was scared.”

He looked at her.

The hunger was still oriented — the absolute protective response the document described, still running, still locked on the operatives who were now in the street below being met by Vale’s team based on the field’s read of Vale’s approaching frequency.

He let it go.

Let it return to the waiting state.

”You’re okay,” he said.

”I’m okay,” she said.

”The operatives are handled,” he said. ”Vale’s team is outside.”

”I know,” she said. ”I can feel it in the field.”

He nodded.

Moved to step back.

She caught his arm.

Not hard. Not pulling. Just — contact. The specific gesture of someone who had decided they were finished with the managed distance.

He stopped.

She looked at him.

”Stay,” she said. ”Until Vale’s team clears the building. I—” she paused. ”I’d rather not be alone in the building until it’s cleared.”

He looked at her.

The bright directed frequency at its real register, no gap between content-mind and real-mind, the decision she’d made two days ago carrying its full weight.

”Okay,” he said.

He came in.

Lyra stayed at the door — not inside, the threshold, the specific position of something that understood the shape of the moment and its own role in it.

”I’ll be in the lobby,” she said.

He looked at her.

She met his gaze with the direct complementary-frequency look.

”Vale’s team needs a contact,” she said. ”Someone who knows what FR-7 looks like.”

”That’s practical,” he said.

”I’m practical,” she said.

She went to the elevator.

He closed the door.

Mira’s apartment.

Pre-dawn. The city going from dark to grey outside the windows. The stream rig with its local recording indicator. The desk covered in Gate analysis — she’d been working, he realized, the three hours since the field shift had woken her. Working because that was what she did when she was uncertain — she produced things, built things, turned experience into content and content into record.

She sat on the edge of the desk.

He stood near the window.

”How did they get my address,” she said.

”Stormfront Guild’s database,” he said. ”The associated personnel documentation Vale filed last night put you formally in my file. FR-7 accessed the guild registry.”

She absorbed this.

”Vale’s documentation connected me to you formally,” she said.

”Yes.”

”And that made me a target,” she said.

”Yes.”

She looked at her phone.

”I’ve been—” she stopped. ”I’ve been visible since day eight. The stream. The footage. Everyone knows my name.” She paused. ”The associated personnel documentation was the first time I was formally connected to your file. Not just visible. Connected.”

He held her gaze.

”I’m sorry,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Don’t,” she said.

”Mira—”

”Don’t apologize,” she said. ”I made a choice. Every choice I’ve made since day eight has been with full information.” She held his gaze. ”I don’t want your apology. I want—” she paused. ”I want you to tell me the rest of what the document says.”

He looked at her.

”Lyra finished the translation this morning,” he said. ”I was going to tell everyone tonight.”

”Tell me now,” she said.

He held her gaze.

The field running — her frequency at its elevated register, the processing quality running underneath, the bright directed pattern doing the thing it did when it was running at full capacity on something that mattered.

He told her.

What The Anchor Carries. The bidirectional protection. The absolute orientation. The way the hunger turned toward threats to registered frequencies with the same instinctive response it used in Gates.

She listened.

When he finished she was quiet for a moment.

”That’s what happened in the lobby,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

”You felt them through the field,” she said.

”I felt the threat,” he said. ”The field registered it before I consciously processed it.”

She looked at him.

”You came four kilometers in pre-dawn Seoul because the field registered a threat to my frequency,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Something moved through her expression.

Not the recalibration she did when information required updating. Something more fundamental. The real one, the non-content-mind version, looking at him with the full weight of what the field was and what it meant and what mine pending had resolved into.

”That’s—” she started.

Stopped.

”That’s a lot,” he said, mirroring what she’d said about his situation on day eight.

She looked at him.

The almost-smile.

”That’s a lot,” she agreed.

She set her phone down.

Stood up from the desk.

Crossed the room.

He held his ground — the field running its full bilateral read, her frequency and his, the compass registered and complete and the protection architecture doing its passive ambient work.

She stopped close.

Not the managed distance. The deliberate closing of it.

”Mira,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I know what the configuration is. I know the compass. I know there are four other registered frequencies and I know what bilateral means and I know what load-bearing means.” She held his gaze. ”I’m not asking you to choose.”

”Then what are you asking,” he said.

She looked at him.

”I’m asking you to stay until the building is cleared,” she said. ”And then I’m asking you to let me stream the FR-7 situation.”

He stared at her.

”Stream the—”

”FR-7 made a move against a registered Hunter associated with the Sovereign Class anchor,” she said, and her voice had gone into the register where content-mind and real-mind were running at exactly the same level. ”That’s not a private event. That’s a public accountability story. And I have three hours of local recording that documents the field shift, the threat registration, and the response.” She held his gaze. ”Hwan Sunil has been operating in the dark. I can turn the light on.”

He looked at her.

The S-rank Hunter who had built seventeen million followers by being the most accurate, most present, most real voice in the Hunter content space.

”Vale’s back-channel escalation,” he said.

”Goes through institutional channels,” she said. ”Takes three weeks. Can be managed, buried, delayed.” She tilted her head. ”Seventeen million followers takes thirty seconds.”

He held her gaze.

”You want to expose FR-7 publicly,” he said.

”I want to make it impossible for the Association to quietly manage the exposure,” she said. ”There’s a difference.” A beat. ”Vale gets her institutional process. I make sure the institution can’t quietly undo it.”

He thought about this.

Thought about visibility on your terms before anyone else defines you. Day eight. The checkpoint outside the B-class Gate. The thing she’d said that had been true then and was truer now.

”Does Vale know you’re thinking about this,” he said.

”Vale just arrived downstairs,” Mira said, reading the field. ”She’s going to come up in approximately four minutes. You can ask her.”

He looked at Mira.

She looked at him.

”You already talked to her about it,” he said. ”On the phone. While you were waiting.”

”I called her at 4 AM,” she said. ”When the field shifted. She was already awake.” A beat. ”We talked for forty minutes.”

He stared at her.

”You and Vale talked for forty minutes,” he said.

”We have more in common than either of us is comfortable with,” Mira said. ”We’re both very practical. We both work with information as a primary tool. And we both—” she paused.

”Both what,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”We both decided,” she said. ”Last night. At the same time. In different ways. But the same decision.” She tilted her head. ”The field registered us both within about thirty seconds of each other.”

He thought about the panel notification. The fifth frequency registering.

He hadn’t looked at the timing.

”Who was first,” he said.

She looked at him.

The almost-smile becoming the real one — full, present, the stream-face and the real-face fully merged.

”Does it matter,” she said.

He looked at her.

”No,” he said.

”No,” she agreed.

Vale came up at 6:51 AM.

She came in with the efficiency of someone who had been running an operation since 3 AM and was going to continue running it until it was complete. She looked at the room — Dillan at the window, Mira at the desk, the recording equipment, the pre-dawn light, the specific quality of the moment she’d walked into.

She assessed it in under two seconds.

”Building is clear,” she said. ”FR-7 operatives are in Association custody. I’ve filed the incident report under my Handler authority — it supersedes the standard review process and goes directly to Director level.” She looked at Mira. ”The footage.”

”Ready when you are,” Mira said.

”Stream timing,” Vale said.

”When the Director meeting is confirmed,” Mira said. ”Not before. We want simultaneous pressure, not sequential.”

Vale looked at her.

”You’ve thought about the sequencing,” she said.

”I think about everything,” Mira said. ”You know that.”

Something moved through Vale’s expression.

”Yes,” she said. ”I do.”

She looked at Dillan.

He looked at her.

The fifth frequency, registered, the compass complete, the calibrated dark eyes running their assessment and finding it — different this morning. Still precise. Still three steps ahead. But the thing underneath it not contained anymore, running at its full volume through the field.

”The document,” she said. ”What The Anchor Carries.”

”Lyra finishes telling everyone tonight,” he said.

”I want the full translation,” she said. ”Not a summary. The document itself.”

”I’ll have Lyra prepare a copy,” he said.

She nodded.

Looked at her phone.

”The Director meeting is confirmed for 10 AM,” she said. ”I received confirmation while I was in the elevator.” She looked at Mira. ”That’s your window.”

Mira’s hand was already on the stream rig.

”Give me forty minutes to prep,” she said. ”Then I go live.”

Vale nodded.

Looked at Dillan.

”Go back to the facility,” she said. ”The others are going to feel the field shift when the stream goes live and the FR-7 situation becomes public. They should hear it from you first.”

He looked at her.

”You’re managing the situation,” he said.

”I’m the Handler,” she said. ”It’s my function.”

He held her gaze.

”Yuna,” he said.

The name.

She held his gaze.

The not-quite-steady quality — not hidden, not contained, running through the field at full volume.

”Go,” she said. ”I’ll handle this end.”

He went.

He was halfway back to the Yongsan facility when the field shifted.

All five frequencies simultaneously — a wave of awareness running through the compass, the specific quality of the Resonance Field when something significant moved through it.

Mira, going live.

Even from two kilometers away he felt it — the bright directed frequency expanding outward, the specific quality of someone deploying their full capacity toward a purpose that mattered.

He kept walking.

The field ran its read.

Mira: live. Full capacity. The most significant stream of her career by the metric that actually mattered, which wasn’t concurrent viewers.

Vale: precise. Controlled. The Director meeting forty minutes away, the institutional process running alongside the public one, the two tracks of the same purpose.

Sera: he felt her wake up. The elevated frequency shifting from sleep to full operational in under ten seconds — she’d felt the field shift and had been awake before the second pulse.

Dana: already awake. The Tracker perception running continuously, reading the field’s movement, assembling the picture from the pattern.

Lyra: still. The deep-night quality of someone who had been awake since 4 AM and was going to remain so, watching the configuration respond to the threat it had encountered and noting the response for the translation that was still ongoing.

Five frequencies.

All of them responding.

All of them — his, he thought, and then corrected himself immediately because the document had been specific about this.*

Not his.

Compass.

Center and four points.

Carrying each other.

He walked back through the pre-dawn city with the Gate signatures pulsing above and the hunger quiet in its waiting state and the field running its full ambient read.

The FR-7 situation was going to resolve today.

Hwan Sunil was going to have a very bad 10 AM.

And seventeen million people — soon to be significantly more — were going to know what happened when you reached into the Resonance Field’s compass and found something that responded at full Sovereign Class capacity.

He walked.

The field ran.

The compass carried itself forward.

In her apartment, Mira went live at 7:31 AM.

”Chat,” she said, with the voice that was fully real tonight, no gap, ”I have something important to tell you.”

The concurrent viewer count started climbing.

She told them.

All of it.

The FR-7 sub-faction. The unauthorized parallel acquisition framework. The residential address access. The 3 AM guild database breach. The operatives in the lobby.

She told them about the field.

Not the full document — that was Dillan’s to tell. But the field’s protective function. The absolute orientation. What happened when something threatened a registered frequency.

She told them about a man who crossed four kilometers of pre-dawn Seoul in Sovereign Class Rank 2 speed because a passive ability registered a threat to her frequency.

She told them clearly.

Precisely.

With the full weight of someone who understood that this was the most significant thing she had ever streamed and that its significance had nothing to do with the viewer count.

The viewer count hit twelve million concurrent at 7:47 AM.

She kept talking.

The field ran its read.

Through four kilometers of city, through the Resonance Field’s compass, the center point felt her frequency — bright, directed, fully operational, real.

Load-bearing, he thought.*

All of them.
