Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Before the Gates opened, she had a different name.

Not a human name. Names the way humans used them — labels, handles, the verbal shorthand of creatures who needed to distinguish themselves from each other because they couldn’t simply know — those had never applied to her. What she’d had was more fundamental than a name. A frequency. A position in the architecture of the place she came from. The thing that made her her rather than the thousand other things that shared her space.

She’d lost it when she came through.

That was the cost of crossing. You left your frequency on the other side like a coat at the door and you arrived on this side as something unregistered, unnamed, occupying a shape borrowed from the impressions the new world pushed into you during transit.

The shape it had pushed into her was a girl.

She hadn’t minded.

She’d been many shapes. This one had advantages.

She chose the name Lyra from a street sign.

Third day in the new world. She’d been walking — learning walking, which was more complicated than it looked, the human body’s relationship with gravity a constant negotiation — through a district that smelled like rain and concrete and the particular metallic edge that Gate energy left on everything within a kilometer radius.

The street sign said LYRA-GIL in Korean and English both.

She’d looked at it for a long time.

Lyra, she’d thought, trying it the way you’d try on something that didn’t belong to you.

It fit well enough.

She kept it.

Here is what Lyra understood about herself in the first week of her existence in the human world:

She was not human. This was not a problem — she had no investment in being human, no sense that human was a category worth aspiring to. She was something that had taken a human shape and was operating it with the focused attention of someone learning a new instrument.

She did not experience the world the way humans did. She experienced it as — texture, mostly. Density. The weight of things, the pressure of presences, the way essence moved through space and collected in certain places and thinned in others. Human cities were extraordinarily dense. Overwhelming, at first. Like standing in a room where every surface was a different sound.

She had learned to filter.

She was not registered in any Hunter system. This was intentional. The registration process involved a panel scan that would have returned results she didn’t want returning. She’d watched the scan from a distance on the first day and understood immediately what it would find — not unclassified, not error, but something so far outside the system’s parameters that the scan itself would have become an event.

She didn’t want to be an event.

She wanted to find the source of the pull.

The pull had started before the Gates opened.

That was the thing she hadn’t been able to explain to herself for the first several days. The Gates were new — the connections between her world and this one were new, torn open by something she hadn’t fully understood yet. She should have come through when the Gates opened, pulled by the crossing like everything else.

She hadn’t.

She’d come through three days before.

Because the pull had already been there. Already oriented. Already specific — not toward this world in general but toward a precise point in it, a location, a frequency that resonated with something fundamental in her own architecture in a way that made distance feel like physical discomfort.

She’d followed it through a crossing that shouldn’t have been possible yet.

She’d arrived in Seoul at 4 AM on a Saturday, two days before the world changed, and she’d walked through the pre-dawn city following the pull like a thread, block by block, until she’d found the apartment building it led to.

Third floor. End unit.

She’d stood on the pavement below it for a long time.

Inside, she could feel him — not see him, not hear him, just feel the frequency of him, the specific density of a presence that the pull had been pointing at since before she had a name for pointing. He was asleep. His essence was — contained was the wrong word. Dense. Folded inward, all that potential turned on itself, unaware of what it was.

What are you, she’d thought, looking up at his window.

She still didn’t have a complete answer.

But she’d stayed.

She watched him lose his job.

She watched him lose his girlfriend.

She watched him read his rank notification and do that thing with his jaw — the deliberate release of tension, the conscious choice not to react — and she’d felt it resonate in her own architecture like a string being plucked.

Controlled, she’d thought. Under all of it. Controlled.

She watched him walk toward the first Gate.

She watched him go in.

She watched him come out.

She watched the woman with the healer’s insignia watching him from the coffee shop, and she registered the healer’s frequency with the detached accuracy of something that experienced people as patterns rather than individuals. The healer’s pattern was — complex. Layered. A warm surface frequency over something denser underneath, the two not quite synchronized, the gap between them where the interesting information lived.

Careful, Lyra noted about the healer.

She did not intervene.

She was not ready to intervene.

She was learning him first.

Learning him took the better part of nine days.

Here is what she learned:

He moved through the world with a specific kind of deliberate underreaction — absorbing things, processing them internally, responding later and quieter than the situation seemed to call for. This was not passivity. It was a form of control she recognized because it resembled something she did herself — the management of a response that, unmanaged, would be disproportionate.

He was funny in a way he didn’t perform. The dry internal monologue that she could almost feel the texture of when she was close enough — the commentary he ran on his own situation, the jokes he made to an audience of himself. She liked this. She wasn’t sure like was the right word for what she experienced but it was the closest human vocabulary offered.

He paid attention. Not obviously — not the performed attentiveness of someone who wanted to be seen paying attention. The real kind. The kind that filed things and retrieved them later and noticed the gap between what was shown and what was meant.

He’d noticed the gap in the healer already. She’d watched him notice it. He hadn’t acted on it yet, but he’d noticed.

Good, she’d thought.

She wanted him to notice things.

She wanted him to be able to protect himself from the ones who needed protecting against.

She was not sure yet which ones those were.

She was making assessments.

The first time she touched his essence directly was the third Gate.

Not intentional. She’d been closer than usual — drawn in by the density of the B-class interior, the ecosystem’s richness, the extraordinary texture of so much concentrated essence in one space. She’d been in the upper canopy of the red-bark forest watching him move through the undergrowth below when the apex absorption happened.

The wave of essence that released during that absorption was — significant.

It passed through her.

And the piece of her that was made of the same fundamental material as what he carried — the resonance that had been pulling at her since before the world changed — responded.

She’d gripped the branch she was sitting on hard enough to crack it.

Sat very still for a long time afterward.

Oh, she’d thought, with the specific quality of a realization that doesn’t surprise you so much as confirm something you’d already suspected.

That’s what you are.

She made her decision that night.

Not a human decision — not deliberated, not weighed against alternatives, not the product of a process. More like a recognition. The way water recognizes a vessel. The way a frequency locks onto its resonant match.

She was going to be near him.

Not following. Not watching from a distance. Near. Present. Occupying the same space, breathing the same air, close enough that the pull could settle from an ache into something quieter.

She understood, in an abstract way, that this required introduction.

Humans introduced themselves. It was a social mechanism she’d observed but not yet deployed. The exchange of names, the establishment of basic parameters, the beginning of the pattern of recognition that humans called knowing someone.

She would need to do that.

She thought about how.

She’d been thinking about how for two days when his phone received the message that changed the configuration.

Four shadows, she’d sent. You’ve only noticed three of them.

She’d watched him read it from thirty meters away, invisible in the shadow of a doorway across the street.

Watched him look up. Look around. Look at the city like it might tell him something.

Not yet, she thought. Not today.

But soon.

She stepped back into the shadow.

Folded herself into the space between perceptions — not invisible exactly, not a power, just the natural ability of something that had spent its existence in a dimension where being noticed was a choice rather than a default.

She followed him home.

She sat on the roof of his building in the overcast morning and listened to the city and felt his frequency below her, moving through his apartment, the familiar rhythm of him she’d learned across nine days of careful attention.

The healer’s frequency was three blocks away and moving closer. The streaming woman’s was across the city, bright and directed. The commander’s was in the tower, contained and deliberate.

All of them oriented in the same direction.

All of them pointing at the same frequency.

Mine, said every one of them, in the language of pattern and pressure and the specific gravity of obsession.

Lyra sat on the roof and looked at the overcast sky.

She did not say mine.

She didn’t need to.

The pull had been there before the world changed. Before the Gates. Before any of them had ever seen him or decided what they wanted.

She had been oriented toward him since before this world had a word for what she was.

Mine implied a claim.

What she had was older than claims.

What she had was a frequency.

And his matched hers.

That was not possession.

That was physics.

She was on his roof when he came home.

She heard the door. His footsteps on the stairs — slightly different from two days ago, the new B-class reflex stats changing the rhythm of how he moved without him being aware of it yet. She noted the change and filed it the way she filed everything about him.

She heard him stop on the third floor landing.

She heard him look at his phone.

She felt him think about the message.

Four shadows.

She stood up from where she’d been sitting and looked at the rooftop access door.

Not today, she told herself again.

She needed to think about how. About the right moment. About the specific configuration that would allow an introduction to land correctly rather than — she thought about the word for what she needed to avoid — alarm.

Humans alarmed easily.

She had learned this.

She turned toward the roof’s edge.

The rooftop access door opened.

She went very still.

He stepped through it.

He was carrying two cups of something hot — convenience store, from the smell — and he’d clearly come up here expecting to be alone, because he made it three steps onto the roof before he stopped.

And looked at her.

She looked back.

He was nine days more than the man she’d first found below this building. The stats were visible if you knew how to look — small increases in the density of his physical presence, the Dominance Aura fragment adding something subtle to the air immediately around him, the apex essence sitting in his system like a new instrument learning its place in an orchestra.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

And the pull — which had been an ache across three days of keeping her distance, which had been a roar during the apex absorption, which had been a constant low frequency hum for nine days before that — went quiet.

Completely quiet.

The way a held breath releases.

She hadn’t realized how loud it had been until it stopped.

His expression moved through several things very quickly — surprise, assessment, the specific alertness of someone whose new instincts were registering a variable they didn’t have a category for yet.

Then he said, with the dry calm of a man who had stopped being surprised by his own life sometime around day three:

”You’re the fourth shadow.”

She looked at him.

”I’ve been on your roof for nine days,” she said.

His expression did several more things.

”Nine days,” he said.

”You moved differently today,” she said. ”The B-class reflex transfer. It changed your gait by approximately four percent. I wasn’t sure you’d notice yet.”

He stared at her.

”I didn’t notice,” he said.

”I know.” She tilted her head. ”I notice for you.”

The pull was so quiet now. Like standing in the eye of something enormous.

He looked at her for a long time.

Then he held out one of the convenience store cups.

”I only bought two,” he said. ”But I haven’t opened this one.”

She looked at the cup.

Looked at him.

Took it.

It was warm against her palms, which were always slightly cooler than human-normal, a temperature differential that she’d noticed other humans notice and had learned to minimize with gloves or distance.

He noticed.

He didn’t say anything.

She wrapped both hands around the cup.

”Lyra,” she said.

”Dillan,” he said.

They stood on the rooftop in the overcast morning with the Gate signatures pulsing their muted violet above the city and the pull between them quiet as a held breath and nine days of watching finally folded into the simple fact of standing in the same space.

”You’ve been keeping me safe,” he said. Not a question. The statement of a man connecting dots he’d been collecting without knowing they were a picture.

”Yes,” she said.

”From what.”

She thought about the things she’d redirected. The Guild acquisition team that had found his address on night four and had their van develop unexpected mechanical issues two blocks away. The two hunters who’d followed him home on day six with intentions she’d read from their frequency before they’d fully formed the thought. The attention from a faction of the Association that Vale didn’t know about yet, that had been building a file on him since day two.

”Things,” she said.

He looked at her.

”Things,” he repeated.

”I can be more specific,” she said. ”Later. When you’re ready for the specific.”

He was quiet for a moment.

”Are you dangerous?” he asked.

She considered the question with the seriousness it deserved.

”To you?” she said.

”To anyone.”

”Yes,” she said simply. ”But not randomly. There are parameters.”

”What parameters?”

She looked at him directly.

”You,” she said. ”You’re the parameter.”

He held her gaze.

The pull hummed between them like a frequency finding its match.

He drank his coffee.

She held hers.

Below them the city moved and the Gates pulsed and three other frequencies oriented themselves toward the same point from three different distances and Lyra stood on the roof of his building and felt — for the first time since she’d crossed through and lost her name and learned a new one from a street sign —

Something that the human vocabulary she’d been assembling called home.

She wasn’t sure that was right.

But it was the closest word she had.
