Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

It started with the rain.

Not romantically — not the cinematic kind of rain that arrives on cue and knows its role in the story. The practical kind. The kind that showed up at 8 PM on the twelfth day of the new world with no announcement and no consideration for anyone’s plans, turning Seoul’s streets into reflective black mirrors and driving everyone indoors with the blunt efficiency of weather that had somewhere to be.

Dillan had been on his way back from the Association building — a follow-up meeting with Vale’s analysts about the seven integrated ability fragments, two hours of technical assessment that had left him with a headache and the specific mental fatigue of someone who had spent the afternoon being studied.

The rain hit three blocks from his apartment.

He didn’t run. He walked, because running felt like the rain winning, and he was Sovereign Class now and apparently that meant something, even against precipitation.

He was soaked by the time he got to his building.

Sera was sitting on the steps.

Not inside — outside, on the front steps, with an umbrella she had clearly forgotten to open because she’d been looking at her phone when the rain started and had simply not noticed the transition from dry to wet. She was damp at the shoulders, her jacket darkened with rain, and she was reading something on her screen with the focused attention she brought to everything including, apparently, being rained on.

He stopped at the bottom of the steps.

She looked up.

They looked at each other in the rain.

”You forgot to open your umbrella,” he said.

She looked at the closed umbrella in her hand.

”I was reading,” she said.

”What were you reading.”

”Gate ecosystem research. There’s a new paper on apex essence interactions that—” she stopped. Looked at him. At his completely soaked jacket and the rain running down his face. ”You walked.”

”Three blocks.”

”You’re drenched.”

”It’s water.”

She stood up. Opened the umbrella. Held it out over him — which required her to step down one stair and stand closer than her usual managed distance, the umbrella covering him but leaving her still partly in the rain.

He looked at the umbrella covering him.

Looked at her, getting rained on from one side.

”Sera.”

”Mm.”

”You’re still getting wet.”

”You’re wetter.”

”That’s not—” he took the umbrella handle from her. Repositioned it. Over both of them. Which required a specific proximity — closer than the Gates, closer than the café, closer than the coffee and the debriefs and the eleven days of managed distance that she maintained with such practiced ease.

She looked up at him.

He looked down at her.

The rain came down on the umbrella between them and the city went about its wet business and the Gate signature above the district pulsed once — soft, distant, the ambient rhythm of the new world.

”Come inside,” he said.

His apartment was still insufficient.

He’d decided that this morning and hadn’t done anything about it yet, which meant it was still insufficient for two people, still eight meters at its widest, still containing a fifteen-meter Dominance Aura that the walls couldn’t hold.

Sera had been here before — once, to drop food, briefly, with the specific energy of someone who was very aware of the threshold and what crossing it meant and was managing that awareness. Tonight she came in differently. The rain had removed something — not her composure, that was structural, but the careful distance-maintenance, the calibrated proximity. She was just wet and standing in his kitchen and looking around with the quiet attention she brought to every space she entered.

He got towels.

She took hers. Pressed it to her hair with the absent focus of someone whose attention was elsewhere, looking at his kitchen table — the official documents, the Handler Agreement copy, the phone sitting dark and finally quiet after yesterday’s notification cascade.

”How were the analysts?” she said.

”Thorough,” he said. ”Vale’s building a detailed profile of the fragment integrations. She wants weekly assessments going forward.”

”Weekly is reasonable,” Sera said. ”The ability is still developing. Regular data points matter.”

”You sound like her.”

”She’s not wrong about the data,” Sera said. ”I disagree with her on several other things but not the data.”

He looked at her.

”What do you disagree with her on,” he said.

She toweled her hair. Looked at him with the damp composed certainty of someone deciding how honest to be.

”Her instinct is to contain,” Sera said. ”Even when she doesn’t intend it. Even with the subsection deleted and the expanded clauses. Her default orientation is toward management.” She held his gaze. ”You don’t need managing. You need — space. Room. The ability to grow without someone drawing the lines of the container first.”

”And you give me that,” he said.

”I try to,” she said.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

The rain on the window. The Gate signature outside. The towel in her hands and the damp at her shoulders and the twelve-hundred-square-feet of an apartment that was too small for what it contained.

”The routing,” he said.

She went still.

”Tell me,” he said. Not an accusation. A request. The difference was in the tone and she heard it immediately.

She lowered the towel.

”I redirected three contacts,” she said. ”In the first week. People from your old life — the guild, two personal contacts.” She held his gaze. ”Not Dana. I didn’t touch Dana’s messages after the first redirect.”

”After the first,” he said.

”There was one message in the first three days,” she said. ”I rerouted it. Then I stopped. I told myself—” she paused. ”I told myself it was because the network instability made it plausible and you didn’t need distractions and I was protecting your focus.”

”And the real reason,” he said.

Quiet.

The specific quiet of a room where someone is deciding whether to say the true thing.

”I was afraid,” she said.

He looked at her.

”Of old connections,” she said. ”Of the people who knew you before. Who have a history with you that I don’t have.” She said it with the precise honesty of someone who had been sitting with it for twelve days and was choosing, right now, to set it down. ”I was afraid of what they’d mean compared to what I am. Which is — someone who found you eleven days ago. Who has been—”

She stopped.

”Who has been what,” he said.

She looked at him.

The window open. Fully. The warm dark composure not gone but no longer doing the work of concealment — just present, just her, without the architecture between them.

”Building toward you,” she said quietly. ”Since day two. Probably since day one if I’m honest. I saw you walk toward that Gate and I thought—” she stopped again. ”I thought: that person is going to need someone who pays attention. And I paid attention and then I kept paying attention and somewhere between the C-class and the ecosystem Gate and the way you looked when the Boss dissolved I—”

”Sera,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I know it’s — I know what it looks like. I know how it registers from the outside. I’m not going to ask you to—”

He crossed the kitchen.

She went still when he moved toward her. Not afraid — the stillness of something that has been in motion a long time and has suddenly, unexpectedly, been met.

He stopped close. The managed distance she’d maintained for twelve days absent, the gap between them the specific narrow kind that required a decision to cross.

He looked at her.

She looked up at him.

The warm dark eyes without the composure doing its usual work. Just her.

”You redirected my messages,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”And you’re telling me now.”

”Yes.”

”Because I asked.”

”Because you asked,” she said. ”And because I’m—” she exhaled, quiet, the controlled breath of someone releasing something they’ve been holding, ”I’m tired of the gap between what I show and what I mean. With you specifically. I’m tired of the management.”

He reached up.

Moved a strand of still-damp hair from her face.

She didn’t move. Barely breathed.

”That’s not okay,” he said. ”The routing. What you did.”

”I know,” she said.

”I’m going to need you not to do it again.”

”I know,” she said again. Steady. Not defensive. The acceptance of someone who had already sat with the cost of what they’d done and wasn’t trying to avoid it.

”And I’m going to need you to understand,” he said, ”that if you want something — if there’s something you want from this — you ask. You don’t route around it.”

She looked at him.

Something moved through her face. Through the real architecture of her, the layered careful thing that had been building toward him since day two.

”And if I ask,” she said quietly. ”What then.”

He looked at her.

”Then I answer,” he said.

Her breath caught. Small. Almost inaudible.

”Dillan,” she said.

”Ask,” he said.

She looked at him for a long moment. The rain on the window. The Gate outside. The twelve days folded into the narrow gap between them.

”I want this to be real,” she said. ”Whatever this is. I want it to be — not managed. Not strategic. Real.”

He looked at her.

”That’s not a question,” he said.

”No,” she agreed. ”It’s not.”

She closed the gap herself.

She kissed him like she did everything — with full attention, nothing held back, the composed warmth finally operating without the careful distance that had been its constant counterweight. Her hands went to his jacket — damp still, rain-cold — and gripped it like something she’d been deciding whether to hold for twelve days and had finally decided.

He kissed her back.

And she made a sound against his mouth — small, involuntary, the specific sound of something released that had been held a long time — and he felt it in his chest the way he felt the pull toward essence in a Gate, that fundamental orientation, except this was toward her and it had apparently been there since the C-class and he’d been not-examining it with the same discipline he applied to everything he wasn’t ready to look at directly.

He was looking at it now.

She pulled back enough to look at him. Close. The warm dark eyes at close range, the damp strand of hair he’d moved now moved again by her own hand, the composure fully absent and what replaced it was—

Her, he thought. That’s just her.

”Real,” he said.

”Real,” she confirmed.

His apartment was insufficient.

The bed was in the next room and the distance between the kitchen and it was approximately three meters and those three meters happened in pieces — her jacket on the kitchen chair, his on the floor, the towel somewhere, the rain still coming down on the window and the Gate still pulsing and the city still being a city outside while inside the gap between them became not a gap at all.

She was—

Not what he’d expected. Which was its own thing, the gap between the carefully maintained surface and the reality, the composure that was a choice she made and not her actual temperature. Her actual temperature was the opposite of the managed warmth — the real warmth, unmanaged, the kind that didn’t know how to be anything other than total.

”I’ve been thinking about this,” she said, at some point, quietly, her voice doing none of the things it usually did and everything it had apparently been suppressing for twelve days.

”Since when,” he said.

She looked at him. The warm dark eyes at close range. A small smile that was entirely genuine and slightly devastating.

”Day two,” she said.

”Day two,” he said.

”The C-class,” she said. ”When you caught the third monster before it reached me. You turned around and you were—” she stopped. ”You were just there. You didn’t think about it. You just turned and caught it.”

He remembered it.

”That’s when,” she said.

He looked at her.

”I caught a monster,” he said.

”You turned around,” she said. ”Without thinking. Your first thought was—” she stopped again, her voice doing something complicated, ”your first thought was me.”

He held her gaze.

She was right.

He hadn’t thought about it then. He was thinking about it now, with her looking at him like that, with the twelve days and the Gates and the coffee and the briefings and the managed distance finally absent.

His first thought had been her.

”Sera,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I know what this is. I know how it looks from the outside and I know what I’ve done and I know it’s not — I’m not asking you to—”

”Stop telling me what you’re not asking,” he said.

She stopped.

”Tell me what you are asking,” he said.

She looked at him.

”This,” she said. ”Just this. Tonight. Real.”

”Tonight and tomorrow,” he said.

Something moved through her face. Bright, quick, the window fully open.

”Tonight and tomorrow,” she agreed.

Later.

The rain had slowed. Not stopped — slowed to the quiet persistent kind that didn’t demand attention, just existed. The city outside was doing its nighttime thing, the Gate signature pulsing its soft ambient violet through the window onto the ceiling above the bed.

She was on her side, facing him, with the specific quality of presence of someone who was very awake and choosing to be still anyway. Her hair was loose. The composed warmth was back but different — not the managed version, the natural one, the way warmth is when it doesn’t have to work to be what it is.

He was on his back looking at the ceiling.

His panel was running its overnight processing routine quietly in the corner of his awareness. The Dominance Aura’s fifteen meter radius filled the apartment and extended into the street below. Somewhere on the roof above them, he was aware — newly, precisely — of a frequency he’d been learning to read for four days.

Lyra.

He filed that.

”The routing,” he said, to the ceiling. ”I meant what I said.”

”I know,” she said.

”Dana is my friend. The others were my connections. They were mine to decide about.”

”I know,” she said again, quietly.

”Sera.”

”I know,” she said a third time. Steady. Carrying it. ”I’m not going to ask you to forgive it quickly. I’m asking you to—” she paused. ”I’m asking you to let me show you that I understand why it was wrong. Not just that it was.”

He turned his head.

She was looking at him with the warm dark eyes that were open all the way tonight.

”There’s a difference,” she said.

”Between what,” he said.

”Between knowing a thing is wrong and understanding why,” she said. ”I did it because I was afraid. Because the fear was louder than the part of me that knew better. I’m not going to do it again because I understand now that — that what I want from you requires you to be able to choose me.” She held his gaze. ”Not because the alternatives have been managed away. Because you chose.”

He looked at her.

The Dominance Aura hummed.

The rain came down.

”That’s a very self-aware thing to say,” he said.

”I’ve been practicing,” she said.

He looked at her.

She looked back at him.

Something between them that wasn’t the managed distance and wasn’t the careful warmth — something newer and less constructed, something that had apparently been waiting under both of those things for twelve days and was only now in a position to breathe.

”Okay,” he said.

She exhaled.

”Okay,” she said.

The city outside. The Gate above. The rain on the window.

”Dana is going to the Hunter registration desk tomorrow,” he said.

A pause.

”I know,” she said.

”You don’t know,” he said. ”I’m telling you.”

A longer pause.

”I know,” she said, differently. Softer. The acknowledgment of a distinction that mattered.

”Good,” he said.

She moved closer. Not dramatically — a small adjustment, the specific proximity of two people choosing to be in the same space rather than maintaining careful distance. Her head against his shoulder, warm, her breathing slowing toward the quiet rhythm of someone not sleeping but resting.

He looked at the ceiling.

The Gate pulsed violet.

Real, he thought.

Tonight and tomorrow.

On the roof, Lyra felt the shift in Dillan’s frequency.

Not intrusive — she had no interest in the specific texture of what happened inside his apartment. But frequency was frequency. The Sovereign Class signal she’d been reading for twelve days settled tonight into something different. Not quieter — warmer. The specific warmth of a signal that had been running at partial capacity and had found a way to complete the circuit.

She noted it.

Looked at the healer’s frequency — three floors below, present, the dense layered pattern running slower than usual, the gap between surface and depth narrower than she’d ever measured it.

Something had resolved.

Not everything. The healer was complex and would remain complex and the fracture lines she’d noted weren’t gone. But something had resolved.

Lyra looked at the sky.

The streaming woman’s frequency across the city: awake, circling, the decision it had made two days ago still processing its implications.

The commander’s frequency in the tower: contained, deliberate, the not-quite-steady quality she’d noticed since the Boss clear running a little louder tonight.

The fourth frequency — the old friend: three districts east, her apartment, awake, the fracture line present and real and something building along it.

Four frequencies.

All of them pointing the same direction.

All of them changed since yesterday.

The configuration was moving.

Lyra pulled her knees to her chest.

Below her, the warmth in Dillan’s frequency hummed steadily.

She thought about the conversation she needed to have.

About the things she’d redirected in the night and the sub-faction that kept finding the address and the fracture in the fourth frequency that was going to become something significant if it kept building without anyone acknowledging it.

About the way all five frequencies were going to have to occupy the same space eventually and what that would require.

She thought about these things with the patient attention of something that experienced time differently than the creatures moving through it.

”Soon,” she said, to the overcast sky.

To herself.

To the configuration.

”Soon.”
