Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

She knocked.

That was the first thing — the knock, which Dillan hadn’t expected. He’d expected her to simply be there, the way she was simply there on the roof, the way she’d been simply present for eighteen days without announcing herself. The knock felt like a deliberate choice, a concession to human protocol that she’d made with the focused intention of someone who understood the gesture even if it didn’t come naturally.

He opened the door.

She was standing in the hallway in the specific quality of stillness that was hers — not the stillness of someone waiting but the stillness of something that was always in motion at a level below visibility, always processing, always reading the space it occupied.

She was wearing — he registered, because it was notable — different clothes than the roof. Not the dark practical layers she’d worn up there. Something more considered, more human, the kind of outfit that suggested she’d thought about what people wore when they came inside.

She had.

He understood, looking at her, that this was an effort. That crossing the threshold of his door was a different kind of crossing than the one she’d made eighteen days ago through the dimensional membrane, and that she was treating it with corresponding seriousness.

”You knocked,” he said.

”It seemed appropriate,” she said.

”It was appropriate,” he said.

He stepped back.

She came in.

She stood in the center of the main room and looked at it the way she’d looked at his old apartment from the roof — directly, fully, with the frequency-reading attention that he was beginning to understand was her primary mode of perception. Not just eyes. The whole of what she was, taking in the whole of what the space was.

Her eyes moved through the room. Analysis station, stack of research, the view from the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city and the Gate signatures and the morning light that was doing something with the overcast sky, trying to find angles through the cloud cover.

”Different from before,” she said.

”I moved yesterday,” he said.

”I know.” She looked at the windows. ”I followed.”

He thought about this.

”You followed me from the old building to here,” he said.

”Yes.”

”You’re on this roof too,” he said.

”The one above,” she said. ”Fourteenth floor access. The building’s residential cap is the fifteenth and you’re on the fifteenth, so the roof access is one floor above your ceiling.” She paused. ”I verified the structural load-bearing capacity before I positioned there.”

He looked at her.

”You verified the structural load-bearing capacity,” he said.

”I didn’t want to damage your ceiling,” she said simply.

He sat down on the couch.

After a moment, she sat in the chair across from him — not the couch, not beside him, the chair, with the careful consideration of someone who was making a spatial decision and wanted it to be a real choice rather than a default.

She looked at him.

He looked at her.

”Talk to me,” he said.

She talked.

Not the way humans talked — not the social performance of conversation, the filling of silence with sound, the navigation of what to reveal and how quickly. She talked the way she did everything: directly, fully, without the architecture of strategy around it.

She told him about the crossing.

”I came through three days before the Gates opened,” she said. ”Which should not have been possible. The membrane between dimensions was still sealed. But the pull—” she paused, looking for the right framework, ”the pull was already there. I felt it from my side. A specific frequency, specific location, and the distance between us was — I don’t have a human word for what the distance felt like.”

”Try,” he said.

She thought about it.

”Wrong,” she said. ”Like a calibration error. Like a system running at incorrect parameters because one of its fundamental components is on the wrong side of a wall.”

He looked at her.

”You crossed a sealed dimensional membrane because the distance felt wrong,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”I pressed against the membrane for — I don’t experience time the way you do, but the human equivalent would be several weeks. I pressed until it gave.”

”You broke through the membrane yourself.”

”Opened a small breach,” she said. ”It sealed behind me. Nothing else came through.” She held his gaze. ”I want to be clear about that. I was careful.”

”You were careful when you broke through a dimensional membrane three days before the apocalypse,” he said.

”Yes,” she said, without irony.

He sat with that for a moment.

”The pull,” he said. ”Tell me about the pull.”

She was quiet for a moment.

Not the managed silence of a person choosing their words carefully. The silence of something accessing a part of itself that didn’t usually need to be put into human language.

”In my world,” she said finally, ”there is a concept that doesn’t have a direct translation. The closest approximation in your language is resonance — the way two things vibrate at the same frequency and amplify each other. But it’s more than that. More structural.” She looked at her hands. ”There are frequencies that are — paired. Not because they chose each other. Because the architecture that produced them produced them as complements. Two parts of the same fundamental pattern expressed separately.”

He looked at her.

”You’re saying we’re the same frequency,” he said.

”Not the same,” she said. ”Complementary. Like — ” she paused, ” — like a lock and what opens it. Not identical. Matched.”

He held her gaze.

”That’s why the pull was there before you ever saw me,” he said.

”I had never been in your dimension,” she said. ”I had never been within a thousand kilometers of you. And yet for as long as I can remember — which is a very long time by your standards — there was a direction. A specific point in the architecture of everything that registered as—” she looked for the word, ”significant. Necessary. Like a compass direction that isn’t north or south but is equally fundamental.”

He was quiet.

She was quiet.

The morning light through the overcast. The Gate signatures pulsing their ambient rhythm.

”[Devour],” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”What you carry — what the system calls Devour and refuses to classify — is not a Hunter ability. Not in origin. It’s something that came with you. Something you were made with.” She held his gaze. ”In my world it has a name.”

”What name,” he said.

”The closest translation,” she said carefully, ”is origin hunger. The need of something to take in what it was separated from. To absorb back the pieces that are part of its complete form.” She paused. ”It’s why the ability has no ceiling. It isn’t growing toward a limit. It’s growing toward completion.”

He looked at her.

”What does completion look like,” he said.

”I don’t know yet,” she said. ”I’ve never seen it. You’re the first.”

He was quiet for a long moment.

”The Gates,” he said. ”The monsters. The essence.”

”Pieces,” she said. ”Parts of the pattern. They carry fragments of what you’re supposed to be — not because they were made from you, but because the same origin that made you also made this world’s Gates, and this world’s Gates and their contents carry the same fundamental frequency as your ability because they came from the same source.”

He stared at her.

”The Gates came from the same source as me,” he said.

”From the same architectural origin, yes,” she said. ”Not from you specifically. From the — structural principle that produced you. The hunger and what feeds it are part of the same design.”

He sat back.

Looked at the ceiling.

”That’s why the system can’t classify me,” he said. ”Because I’m not growing toward an existing ceiling. I’m growing toward something the system has no record of.”

”Yes,” she said.

”Sovereign Class is just the highest category they could invent before running out of categories,” he said.

”The system will run out of categories several more times before you’re finished,” she said, with the matter-of-fact certainty of someone stating a projection they’ve already run the numbers on.

He looked at the ceiling for a long time.

”Lyra,” he said.

”Mm.”

”If we’re complementary frequencies — if that’s what the pull is — what does that mean. For you.”

She looked at him.

The stillness again. The processing at the level below visibility.

”I don’t experience things the way you do,” she said. ”I don’t have the social architecture, the—” she paused, ”the human framework for what this is supposed to be. What I have is the pull, and the pull has been the most fundamental constant of my existence for longer than your civilization has existed.” She held his gaze. ”What it means for me is that being near you is the absence of the thing that has always been wrong. The calibration error corrected. The system running at correct parameters.”

”That’s what being near me feels like,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”That’s different from how humans experience—”

”I know,” she said. ”I’ve been studying. I understand that in human frameworks what I’ve described sounds—” she paused, reaching for the right word, ”extreme. Excessive. The kind of thing that gets classified as—”

”Obsession,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Is that what it is,” she said. Not defensively. Genuinely asking, the question of something that was trying to understand itself through a vocabulary that hadn’t been built for it.

He looked at her.

”I don’t know,” he said honestly. ”It might be. Or it might be something that doesn’t have a category yet.” He paused. ”Like me.”

Something moved through her expression. Not the human emotional expressions he’d been learning to read over eighteen days. Something more fundamental — a shift in the frequency itself, visible in the specific quality of her stillness changing.

”Like you,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”The sub-faction,” he said. ”Tell me about what you’ve been redirecting.”

She told him.

All of it. The Association sub-faction — a data-collection unit operating outside Vale’s knowledge, reporting to a faction within the Association’s upper structure that had decided Sovereign Class required direct acquisition rather than the Handler approach. Two field operatives who had found his address twice and been redirected both times. A third approach she’d identified three days ago that she hadn’t redirected yet — a different method, not physical, an attempt to access his panel data through the Association’s own network infrastructure.

”I can’t redirect a network intrusion the same way I redirect physical approach,” she said. ”Different method. I need to be inside the network.”

”Can you be,” he said.

”I can interact with systems that carry Gate-origin energy,” she said. ”Your panel runs on the Association’s Gate-protocol network. Which means—”

”You can access the Association network,” he said.

”Limited access,” she said. ”I can read it. I can redirect certain inputs. I can’t modify existing data without leaving traces.”

He looked at her.

”Does Vale know about the sub-faction,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”They’re operating around her. She’s aware of their existence in general terms but not that they’ve been making approaches on you specifically.”

He thought about this.

”She needs to know,” he said.

Lyra looked at him.

”If I tell Vale,” she said carefully, ”I become a known variable. She’ll want to know how I know. She’ll run an assessment. The off-registry frequency—”

”I’ll handle Vale,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”You’re going to tell her about me,” she said.

”I told her you existed yesterday,” he said. ”She wants to meet you.”

The stillness again. Processing.

”She’s thorough,” Lyra said, with a quality he’d started to recognize as her version of dry.

”She is,” he agreed.

”And you trust her assessment of me,” she said.

”I trust her to be accurate,” he said. ”Whether the accuracy is comfortable is a different question.”

Something moved in Lyra’s expression.

”She’ll see the frequency,” she said.

”Probably,” he said.

”She’ll classify it.”

”Probably.”

”And then—”

”And then we deal with what the classification is,” he said. ”Not what we’re afraid it might be.”

She looked at him for a long moment.

The morning light. The Gate signatures. The pull between them quiet and present and more clearly understood now than it had been an hour ago.

”Okay,” she said.

He made tea.

Not because he was particularly a tea person but because she’d had tea on the roof — he’d noticed, the third day, the specific kind she’d sourced from somewhere, the way she held the cup with both hands despite the temperature differential — and it seemed like the correct thing.

She accepted the cup with the particular quality of attention she brought to everything he gave her, the complementary-frequency resonance running quietly underneath the gesture.

They sat in the morning light.

”The others,” she said. ”The healer. The streaming woman. The commander. The old friend.”

”Yes,” he said.

”They’re going to want to know about me,” she said.

”They already do,” he said. ”In varying degrees.”

”The healer knows I exist,” she said. ”She’s read my frequency on your vicinity. She’s been making assessments.” A pause. ”She’s very precise. Her assessment of me is probably accurate.”

”What is her assessment of you,” he said.

Lyra considered.

”Threat,” she said. ”But complicated threat. The kind you watch carefully rather than move against.”

”She hasn’t moved against you,” he said.

”No,” Lyra said. ”She’s waiting to understand me better before she decides whether to.”

He looked at her.

”Should she be worried,” he said.

Lyra looked at him with the direct uncomplicated gaze of something that didn’t do performance.

”About her specifically,” she said. ”No. She cares about you genuinely. Her methods are—” she paused, ”complex. Her intentions are not.”

”And the others,” he said.

”The streaming woman is the most straightforward of them,” Lyra said, which made him think Lyra’s baseline for straightforward was calibrated very differently from his. ”She knows what she wants and she pursues it directly. No hidden layers.”

”Mira is not straightforward,” he said.

”She’s the most honest about what she is,” Lyra said. ”That’s different from simple.” A beat. ”The commander is the most dangerous one to you in terms of structural risk. Not because she means harm. Because she builds frameworks around things she values and the frameworks have their own momentum regardless of her intentions.”

”She deleted the clause,” he said.

”She has three other documents in her desk with versions of the clause intact,” Lyra said.

He stared at her.

”She has what,” he said.

”She deleted it from your copy,” Lyra said. ”She didn’t delete it from her thinking. She’s waiting to see if she ever needs to use it before deciding whether to.” She held his gaze. ”She will never use it against you. She believes that fully. She’s wrong that believing it fully is sufficient.”

He sat with that.

”And Dana,” he said.

Lyra was quiet for a moment.

”The old friend,” she said. ”The fracture line.”

”What fracture line,” he said.

”She has been under sustained pressure since day one,” Lyra said. ”Eight years of something she’s been filing under a different name, and the new classification she received yesterday, and the routing from the first week, and the corner table she found occupied.” She paused. ”The fracture line is the point at which something that has been called one thing for a long time stops being able to be called that.”

”Is she okay,” he said.

Lyra looked at him with the direct gaze.

”She’s cracking open,” she said. ”That’s different from not okay. Things crack open when they’re becoming something larger than the shape they’ve been in.” She held his gaze. ”She’s going to be fine. She’s going to be more than fine. But the process is—” she searched for the word, ”loud. On the inside.”

He thought about Dana’s journal. The handwriting that changed on day three.

”I should have gone to her sooner,” he said.

”Yes,” Lyra said, without softening it.

He looked at her.

”You’re not going to tell me it’s okay,” he said.

”It will be okay,” she said. ”That’s different from it was okay. You can only work with the second part now.” She tilted her head. ”She knows. She registered. She came last night. She’s choosing to move toward rather than away.” A beat. ”You should meet her where she’s moving.”

He nodded.

Looked at his tea.

”Lyra,” he said.

”Mm.”

”When are you going to come in from the roof properly,” he said. ”Not just today. Consistently.”

She held the tea cup with both cooling-temperature hands and looked at him with the frequency that matched his and the pull that had been there since before the world changed and the stillness that was always motion at a level below what was visible.

”The flexible room,” she said.

He looked at her.

”Vale built a flexible room,” she said. ”She called it operationally prudent.”

”She built it for support staff,” he said.

”I support you,” Lyra said simply.

He looked at her for a long moment.

”It’s not a roof,” he said.

”No,” she agreed. ”It’s not.”

”You’re okay with that,” he said.

She considered the question with the seriousness she brought to everything.

”The pull is quiet when I’m near you,” she said. ”For the first time in a very long time.” She looked at him. ”I think I can learn to be okay with a room.”

He held her gaze.

”There are four other people who are going to have a range of responses to this arrangement,” he said.

”I know,” she said.

”Strong responses,” he said.

”I know,” she said again.

”Sera specifically is going to—”

”I know,” she said, with the specific quality of someone who has already run the projection and received the result and has decided to proceed anyway.

He looked at her.

She looked back at him with the complementary-frequency gaze and the patient certainty of something that had been pointing the same direction since before his civilization existed.

”Okay,” he said.

”Okay,” she said.

He texted Vale at 10 AM.

> There’s something I need to tell you about the off-registry frequency. And about the sub-faction.

Her reply came in under a minute.

> I’ve been waiting for this conversation. When.

> Today, he sent. And she’ll be there.

A longer pause than Vale’s usual response time.

> Understood. 2 PM. Bring her.

He looked at the message.

Looked at Lyra, still in the chair with her tea, reading the Gate ecosystem research from Sera’s stack with the focused attention of someone for whom the academic and the personal were the same inquiry.

”2 PM,” he said. ”Vale.”

She didn’t look up from the paper.

”I’ll be there,” she said.

He sent the address.

Picked up his own tea.

Outside, the overcast Seoul morning continued its work. The Gate signatures pulsed. The city moved. Somewhere across it, four frequencies oriented themselves toward the fifteenth floor of a Yongsan residential tower with varying degrees of awareness of the fifth frequency that was now, for the first time, inside rather than above.

The configuration had changed again.

It was going to keep changing.

That was, Dillan thought, probably the permanent condition of his life now.

He drank his tea.

Decided he was okay with that.
