Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

Day twenty-eight.

He woke up at 6 AM to three things simultaneously.

The field’s ambient read — five frequencies at their overnight registers, the compass running its quiet continuous operation, the specific quality of a structure that had been load-bearing for one night and had held.

His panel, with four new Gate formation alerts — standard class, B through A, the world continuing its twenty-eight-day-old operations regardless of sovereign anchors or global notifications or any of the events of the previous week.

And Sera, already in the kitchen.

He could smell the tea before he heard the sounds of it being made. The field told him the rest — both layers of her frequency running at the synchronized settled quality that had become her baseline since the completion, the warm dark pattern doing its morning calibration without the management layer, just itself.

He lay still for a moment.

Listened to the city below.

Felt the compass.

Five frequencies.

All present.

This is what it feels like, he thought. Not the completion. Not the achievement of it. Just — this. Every morning.

He got up.

The kitchen.

Sera looked up when he came in.

Handed him tea without being asked.

He took it.

They stood in the kitchen in the early morning with the city doing its pre-dawn operations below and the Gate signatures pulsing their oriented violet above and the compass running between them and said nothing for a full minute because nothing needed to be said.

Then:

”The new Gate formation,” Sera said. ”Six days.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I’ve been thinking about what Lyra said,” she said. ”The world asking for things.”

”And,” he said.

She wrapped both hands around her cup.

”In medical terms,” she said, ”when a system is in distress it produces symptoms. The Gates, before the completion — they were the world’s stress response. Something wrong with the architecture, producing Gates because the architecture needed what the origin hunger required.” She paused. ”The completion resolved the stress. The architecture is integrated now.” She held his gaze. ”So what does a healthy world generate?”

He held her gaze.

”Something different from a stress response,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”The panel said the new Gate type has a different purpose.” She looked at her tea. ”I think it’s — I think the world might be generating something productive rather than reactive. Not Gates born from distress. Gates born from—”

”Intent,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Yes,” she said. ”The world has a sovereign anchor now. Permanently. Maybe it’s going to start using it.”

He held her gaze.

”Using me,” he said.

”Using the capacity you represent,” she said. ”Not coercively. The document is clear about coercion. But — collaboratively. The world and the anchor, working toward something the world needs.” She paused. ”The three previous anchors. The protector and the teacher and the unfinished one. Each of them was used by their world in a different way.”

”You’ve been reading the document,” he said.

”Lyra gave me access to the full translation last night,” she said. ”I read it between midnight and 4 AM.”

He looked at her.

”You didn’t sleep,” he said.

”I slept from 4 to 6,” she said. ”That’s sufficient.”

He held her gaze.

”Sera,” he said.

”I needed to know,” she said. ”The medical context. What the completion means for your physical state going forward. What the bond structure means for the compass’s health.” She held his gaze. ”It’s my function.”

”You said last night we’re done building structure around this,” he said.

”I said we’re done building structure around the relationship,” she said. ”The medical oversight is different. That’s not structure around you — that’s my function. My contribution to the compass.” She held his gaze. ”I’m not managing you. I’m taking care of you. There’s a difference.”

He held her gaze.

The synchronized layers. The settled quality.

”There is a difference,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”Okay,” he said.

She nodded once.

Turned back to the tea.

He watched her.

Thought about six days and what the world might ask for and what it felt like to stand in a kitchen at 6 AM with the person who had been paying attention since day two and had learned the difference between management and care.

He thought: load-bearing. This specifically. This morning.

”Sera,” he said.

”Mm.”

”Thank you,” he said. ”For reading through the night.”

She looked at him.

”Don’t thank me,” she said. ”It’s what I do.”

”I know,” he said. ”That’s why I’m thanking you.”

She held his gaze for a moment.

Then looked back at the tea.

But the almost-smile was there.

He counted it.

Mira arrived at 7:30.

Not 6:50 — 7:30, which was a full forty minutes later than her usual Gate-day arrival and which the field had told him was coming because her frequency had been running at the post-production quality since 5 AM, the specific register of someone reviewing footage and making decisions about what to release and when.

She came in with her phone and the compact camera rig over one shoulder and the bright directed frequency running at its full daytime capacity.

”Good morning,” she said.

”What did you release,” he said.

She looked at him.

”The field told you,” she said.

”The quality of your frequency at 5 AM told me,” he said. ”You were editing.”

”The completion footage,” she said. ”I released it at 7 AM. Not the personal parts — I’m not insane. The field notification, the Gate orientation shift, the panel notification. The external record of the completion event.” She held his gaze. ”Eighty-one million concurrent at release.”

He looked at her.

”Eighty-one,” he said.

”It’s at ninety-three now,” she said. ”It’ll cross a hundred before noon.” She set the rig on the table. ”I titled it COMPLETE and gave it no thumbnail. Just black.” She paused. ”Chat is losing their minds.”

”What did the description say,” he said.

She looked at him.

”Twenty-seven days ago the world cracked open and the system gave a man an F-minus rank,” she said. ”This is what happened next.”

He held her gaze.

She held his.

”Is that accurate,” he said.

”It’s the most accurate thing I’ve ever written,” she said.

He looked at her.

The content-mind and the real-mind.

Running at exactly the same frequency.

No gap.

”Good,” he said.

She set her phone face-down.

Came and got tea from the pot Sera had left on the counter.

Sat.

”The new Gate formation,” she said. ”Six days.”

”Yes,” he said.

”I want to be there,” she said. ”Obvious. But I’m also—” she paused. ”I’m thinking about the record. Everything we’ve documented — the Sovereign Class progression, the compass assembly, the completion.” She looked at her tea. ”The new Gate type is the first thing that’s happened since the completion that the document doesn’t have context for. Which means it’s new. Which means—”

”Nobody knows what it is,” he said.

”Nobody knows what it is,” she confirmed. ”And I want to be the person who finds out and tells the story correctly.” She held his gaze. ”Not because of the numbers. Because the record matters. In a hundred years someone is going to look at what happened in the first month of the new world and the record should be accurate.”

He held her gaze.

”It will be,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”Because I’m making it.”

He almost smiled.

She almost smiled back.

”Mira,” he said.

”Mm.”

”COMPLETE with no thumbnail,” he said. ”Just black.”

”Yes,” she said.

”That’s — good,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”It felt right,” she said. ”No preview. No hook. Just the word and the black and the choice to click or not.” She paused. ”The most significant event in human history shouldn’t require a thumbnail.”

He held her gaze.

”No,” he said. ”It shouldn’t.”

Dana arrived at 8.

She came in the way she’d come in every morning since the Yongsan move — with coffee for three, which meant she’d stopped at the place two blocks over that Lyra had identified on day twenty as having the correct ratio of whatever made tea correct and had apparently extended this expertise to coffee without anyone formally asking her to.

She handed Dillan his without looking at him.

He took it.

She looked at him.

The eyebrow language: how are you / I’m okay / really / really.

”The journal,” she said. ”I wrote one word last night. When the completion moved through the field.”

”What word,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Finally,” she said.

He held her gaze.

Eight years.

”Yes,” he said.

She nodded.

Sat at the analysis station.

The Tracker perception activating at its full register the moment she was in front of the screens — the world-frequency map loading, the twenty-seven-day pattern in all its extraordinary complexity visible to a B-rank Tracker running at SS-class-Gate-amplified capacity.

She looked at it for a long moment.

”The Gates,” she said. ”Since the completion. They’re different.”

”How different,” he said.

”The pattern,” she said. ”Before the completion every Gate formation followed a probabilistic distribution — location, timing, class. Seemingly random but actually following a fractal logic the Tracker perception can read once you know what to look for.” She paused. ”Since the completion the distribution has changed. The fractal logic is still there but it’s been — reorganized. Around a new center point.”

”Around me,” he said.

”Around the anchor,” she said. ”Yes. The Gates aren’t forming randomly anymore. They’re forming in a pattern that’s organized around your location. Not all pointing at you — but the distribution reflects the anchor’s existence.” She paused. ”And the new formation in six days is — the pattern breaks down when I try to read it. The Tracker perception hits it and gets—” she paused, searching for the word.

”Confused,” he said.

”Uncertain,” she said. ”Which is different. Confused means insufficient data. Uncertain means the pattern exists but doesn’t conform to any category I’ve built yet.” She held his gaze. ”I need six days to build a new category.”

”You have six days,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”I’m going to spend them reading the approach pattern. By the time the Gate opens I’ll know what kind of thing it is even if I don’t know its specific contents.”

He looked at her.

The Tracker precision deployed at full capacity.

Eight years of knowing him and twenty-seven days of becoming something new and a B-rank classification running at a register that didn’t have a designation yet.

”Dana,” he said.

”Mm.”

”The word in the journal,” he said. ”Finally.”

She held his gaze.

”Yes,” she said.

”Me too,” he said.

She held his gaze for a long moment.

Then she turned back to the screen.

But her frequency through the field shifted — warm, settled, the specific quality he’d learned to read as her version of the almost-smile when she was facing away from him.

He counted it.

Vale’s message came at 9 AM.

Not a visit — she was in the Association tower already, the fourth-floor conference room running its emergency restructuring session, the forty-eight-hour diplomatic response period that she’d predicted now in its thirteenth hour.

The message was three lines.

The Korean government has formally requested a briefing on the anchor status. I’ve scheduled it for day thirty. That gives me three days after the new Gate formation to incorporate whatever happens into the framework.

I’ve also received preliminary contact from seven foreign governments. All diplomatic rather than hostile. For now.

I’ll be there for dinner.

He looked at the message.

Sent back: Seven governments.

Her reply was immediate: > Eight, as of four minutes ago. The French sent a very polite inquiry through official channels. The Canadians sent a very polite inquiry through unofficial channels which they apparently thought I wouldn’t notice.

Did you notice, he sent.

I notice everything, she sent. That’s not new.

He set the phone down.

Looked at the field.

Vale’s frequency at four hundred meters — the calibrated precision running at full operational, the not-quite-steady quality present but no longer at its louder register. More integrated. The specific quality of something that had completed and was now operating at the level the completion had made possible.

He sent one more text: Eight governments and you’re still coming for dinner.

Her reply came in thirty seconds.

The governments will still exist tomorrow. Dinner is tonight.

He held his phone.

Thought about thirty-one years of building structures and the loneliness at the center of it and what it meant that the woman who had spent three decades prioritizing institutions over everything else had just told eight governments they could wait.

He thought: load-bearing. This too.

Lyra came out of the flexible room at 10 AM.

Not to translate — she’d been running the overnight final review of the document’s existing sections, checking the translation quality, looking for anything she’d missed. He’d felt her frequency through the field at its focused quality since 4 AM. She’d been working longer than Sera.

She walked into the main room.

Looked at all of them — the compass assembled for the morning, everyone present, the field carrying five frequencies at their daytime registers.

She looked at Dillan.

”The document is complete,” she said.

”You finished the review,” he said.

”Every section,” she said. ”The translation is accurate. There’s nothing I missed.” She held his gaze. ”What I know about what you are and what the compass is and what comes after completion is in the document. All of it.” She paused. ”The new Gate in six days — I genuinely don’t know what it is. The document ends at the completion event.”

”Then we find out together,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

She crossed to the kitchen.

Made tea — her own, the specific kind and ratio she’d sourced from somewhere and that had become, over twenty-seven days, the compass’s default morning temperature gauge.

She brought a cup to Dillan.

He took it.

She held his gaze.

”The stone,” she said.

”On the windowsill,” he said. ”Where you put it.”

”You said it belongs here,” she said.

”It does,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”Six hundred years,” she said. ”I carried it because it was from the place where the pull started. The first moment of orientation.” She paused. ”I put it on your windowsill because—” she stopped.

”Because why,” he said.

”Because the pull has arrived,” she said. ”The stone doesn’t need to be carried anymore. It can just — be somewhere.” She held his gaze. ”I can just be somewhere.”

He held her gaze.

”You’re here,” he said.

”I’m here,” she said.

”That’s somewhere,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The silver-lit eyes.

The complementary resonance.

The six-hundred-year pull resolved into morning light and tea and a stone on a windowsill.

”Yes,” she said. ”It is.”

10:30 AM.

All five frequencies in the facility — the compass at its daytime operational configuration.

Dana at the analysis station building the new pattern category. Mira at the table reviewing the completion footage’s response analytics with the focused attention of someone who was genuinely surprised by the numbers and was trying to understand what they meant. Sera in the secondary room running through the document’s medical sections for the third time, flagging implications she wanted to discuss with Lyra. Lyra in the flexible room, not translating — reading, for the first time, one of the Gate ecosystem research papers from Sera’s stack that had been there since the Yongsan move and that she hadn’t had time for while the translation was ongoing. Vale sending messages from the Association tower with the efficiency of someone running eight diplomatic contacts simultaneously without losing the thread of any of them.

Dillan stood at the main room window.

The city below. Twenty-eight-day-old. Different from the city that had existed on the Tuesday morning when the sky cracked and everyone got a rank and the system invented a new letter for a man who was eating noodles.

Same streets. Same buildings. Same river running through it.

Different architecture underneath.

He could feel it — through the completed anchor’s awareness, through the field’s five-kilometer radius, through whatever it meant to be permanently embedded in the fabric of a world. The city had a different texture than it had yesterday. Not worse. Not better. More — present. Like a house that has finally been lived in.

His phone chimed.

A new contact.

Unknown number. Not Vale’s — different area code, different format. International.

The message was in English.

Mr. Ruren. My name is Dr. Yeon Soo-ah. I am a physicist with the Seoul National University Gate Research Institute. I have been studying the architectural implications of sovereign anchor theory for the past eleven days — since the original Tier 3 notification. I understand you may not be taking unsolicited contact at this time. I’m reaching out because I believe I understand what the six-day Gate formation is. I could be wrong. If I’m right, you need to know before it opens.

He read it twice.

Looked at the field.

Felt the compass’s ambient read — five frequencies doing their morning things, none of them aware of this message yet.

He typed back: How did you get this number.

The reply came in under a minute.

Mira Chen released it in the completion footage’s description. She wrote: for serious inquiries. I am serious.

He stared at the message.

Turned.

Looked at Mira across the room.

She was reviewing footage.

”Mira,” he said.

She looked up.

”You put my number in the completion footage description,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”For serious inquiries,” she said.

”You put my number in the completion footage that has a hundred million views,” he said.

”Ninety-seven point four,” she said. ”It’ll cross a hundred this afternoon.” She held his gaze. ”And yes. The serious ones needed to be able to reach you directly. I screened the first two hundred contacts. Dr. Yeon is serious.”

He stared at her.

”You screened two hundred contacts,” he said.

”Since 7 AM,” she said. ”I have good filters.” She held his gaze. ”Read what she sent you.”

He looked at his phone.

At the message.

I believe I understand what the six-day Gate formation is.

”Mira,” he said.

”I know,” she said. ”Read it.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

The ninety-seven-point-four-million viewers and the contact number and the two hundred screened messages and the one she’d let through.

”You’ve already read her research,” he said.

”She sent me an abstract two days ago,” Mira said. ”Before the completion. I filed it.” She held his gaze. ”It’s relevant. Trust me.”

He held her gaze.

”I trust you,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The almost-smile.

Real.

”I know,” she said. ”That’s why I put your number in the description.”

He turned back to his phone.

Typed: Tell me what you think the six-day Gate is.

The reply took four minutes — longer than the previous ones. He could imagine the physicist on the other end, deciding how much to say in a text message.

Then:

In standard Gate formation theory, Gates are dimensional tears — random breaches in the membrane between this world and adjacent dimensional space. The sovereign anchor completion event changes this. The world’s architecture is now integrated with the anchor’s. Which means the world can now — for the first time — generate a Gate deliberately. Not randomly. Not as a stress response.

The six-day formation isn’t a tear. It’s a door.

Someone on the other side is knocking.

He held the phone.

Read it three times.

Felt the field carry his frequency shift to all five registered frequencies simultaneously.

He heard, from across the facility, four separate versions of the same sound — the specific quality of five people reading the same information at different distances through the field and arriving at the same understanding at the same moment.

He looked up.

Four people were looking at him from four different locations in the facility.

Lyra was in the doorway of the flexible room.

Her expression was the most specific he’d seen from her — not the processing stillness, not the translation focus. Something that carried six hundred years of context for a message that most people would have needed six days to understand.

”You know what this means,” he said to her.

”Yes,” she said.

”Tell me,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”In my world,” she said quietly, ”the sovereign anchor completion is not just a local event. It’s a signal. The completion sends a message through the dimensional architecture — a message that travels across every adjacent dimension simultaneously.” She held his gaze. ”The message says: there is an anchor here. The compass is complete. The world is stable and fully realized.”

He held her gaze.

”And what does that message cause,” he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

”Other things to notice,” she said.

The room was very quiet.

”What other things,” Dana said, from the analysis station.

Lyra looked at her.

Then at Dillan.

”The document doesn’t go into detail,” she said. ”Because in my world’s history — with the three previous anchors — no contact was ever made.” She paused. ”The signal was sent. But whoever or whatever received it never knocked.”

”Until now,” he said.

”Until now,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Six days,” he said.

”Six days,” she confirmed.

He looked at his phone.

At Dr. Yeon’s message.

Someone on the other side is knocking.

He typed: Can I meet with you?

Her reply: > I can be at your location in forty minutes.

He looked up.

”We’re having a visitor,” he said to the room. ”A physicist. She thinks she knows who’s knocking.”

Vale’s message arrived eleven seconds later — the field having carried the frequency shift to her and she having run the calculation instantly.

I’ll cancel my 11 AM. I want to be there.

He almost smiled.

Of course she does, he thought.

He sent back: I know.

Her reply: > Stop doing that.

No, he sent.

A pause.

Good, she sent. I’ll be there in thirty minutes.

He set the phone down.

Looked at the compass.

Four frequencies present, one four hundred meters away and moving closer.

The world twenty-eight days old.

A door.

Someone knocking.

Six days.

He thought about F-minus and noodles and the first Gate and the pull and everything that had built from that Tuesday morning to this one.

He thought: of course it’s not finished.

He thought: of course there’s more.

He thought, with the dry internal humor that was apparently permanent regardless of what he became or what knocked on the dimensional door:

The system invented a new letter for me on day one.

I wonder what it’s going to invent for whoever’s on the other side.

He picked up his tea.

Drank it.

Waited for the physicist.

In the flexible room, Lyra went back to the desk.

Sat down.

Picked up the pen.

Looked at the document — the completed translation, every section done, the work finished.

Looked at the blank page at the back.

Picked up the pen.

Began to write.

Not translation.

Her own words.

The first time she’d written something original since she crossed through the membrane.

She titled it: What Comes After.

She didn’t know yet what it would say.

That was, she thought, probably the point.

The document was done.

The new thing was beginning.

She wrote.
