Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

DAY ONE

The deliberation started quietly.

Not a formal meeting — no table, no documents, no Vale producing an agenda from a folder she’d prepared in advance. Just the compass, in the main room, with tea and the city outside and the specific quality of five frequencies that had completed something enormous yesterday and were now sitting with the question of what came next.

Dillan didn’t open it.

Sera did.

”I want to say something before we start,” she said. ”And I want to say it as a statement, not a question, because I think the shape of the conversation matters.”

Everyone looked at her.

”Whatever the offer is — whether we accept it or decline it or negotiate it — the anchor’s physical condition is the primary variable,” she said. ”The three previous sovereign anchors in Lyra’s world completed their bond conditions and then — what happened to their physical states afterward? Did the absorption continue? Did the completion change their physiology?”

Everyone looked at Lyra.

”The protector’s physical state stabilized after completion,” Lyra said. ”No further significant change. The capacity was fixed at the completion level and the protector used what it had.” She paused. ”The teacher experienced continued development — not through absorption, through the bonds deepening over time. The compass becoming more integrated produced incremental capacity increases.” She paused again. ”The unfinished one — I don’t know. The compass never completed.”

”So the range is: stable, or continued development through bond deepening,” Sera said.

”Yes,” Lyra said.

”And if the offer from your world involves accessing Layers 5, 6, and 7,” Sera said, ”the absorption would restart. New Gate types. New essence. New integration cascades.”

”Yes,” Lyra said.

Sera looked at Dillan.

”I need you to understand what that means medically,” she said. ”The SS-class absorption produced twenty-three fragments. The integration took forty-eight hours and required significant caloric input and rest.” She held his gaze. ”Layers 5, 6, and 7 are deeper than the SS-class layer. The integration cascades would be—”

”Significant,” he said.

”I don’t have a better word,” she said. ”Because I don’t have data. Nobody has data on what Layer 5 and beyond absorption does to an anchor’s system.” She held his gaze. ”I’m not saying decline the offer. I’m saying whatever we decide, the medical preparation has to be part of the plan.”

He held her gaze.

”I know,” he said.

”Good,” she said. ”That’s all I needed to say first.”

Mira looked at her.

Something passed between them — the field carrying it, the specific quality of one frequency acknowledging another’s contribution.

”The record,” Mira said. ”If we accept the offer and the absorption continues — the documentation of that process matters. Not for content.” She held Dillan’s gaze. ”For the future. A hundred years from now someone is going to need to understand what happened in the first month of the new world and what came after it. If the absorption continues through Layers 5, 6, and 7, that needs to be documented accurately from the inside.”

”You want to keep filming,” he said.

”I want to keep recording,” she said. ”There’s a difference. Filming is content. Recording is archive.” She held his gaze. ”I’ll make both. But the archive is what matters.”

He held her gaze.

”Okay,” he said.

”Okay,” she confirmed.

Dana had her journal open.

She’d been writing since the deliberation started — not documenting the conversation, he realized. Something else. He could feel the Tracker perception running at its full capacity, the pattern recognition deployed not at the room but inward, the specific quality of someone reading their own pattern.

”Dana,” he said.

She looked up.

”What are you writing,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The reasons,” she said.

”For what,” he said.

”For whatever we decide,” she said. ”The Tracker reads patterns. I’ve been reading the pattern of what we are since day one — since the journal entry with the changed handwriting.” She held his gaze. ”I want to write down the reasons before the door opens. Before we hear the offer and the reasons get contaminated by what the offer actually is.” She paused. ”The reasons for whatever we decide should come from who we are, not from what we’re offered.”

He held her gaze.

”What are the reasons,” he said.

She looked at the journal.

”I’ve written three,” she said. ”The first: the Gates are still opening and people are dying in them. The second: the compass built something real in twenty-seven days and it deserves to continue being real regardless of what dimensional layers exist beyond the current ones.” She paused. ”The third—”

She looked up.

Held his gaze.

”The third,” he said.

”You walked toward the first Gate alone,” she said. ”With nothing to lose and F-minus on your panel and noodles on your counter.” She held his gaze. ”Whatever you are now — Sovereign Class, permanent anchor, the point around which the world’s architecture organizes itself — you walked toward the first Gate alone on a Tuesday morning because the pull was there and you followed it.” She paused. ”I think that’s worth following as far as it goes.”

The room was very quiet.

He held her gaze.

”Dana,” he said.

”Mm.”

”That’s three reasons,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”They’re good reasons,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I know,” she said.

She went back to writing.

Vale, who had been quiet since Dr. Yeon left — which was itself notable, Vale’s quiet having a specific quality that the field translated as intensive processing in progress, output forthcoming — set her tablet down.

”The diplomatic framework,” she said. ”I’ve been building it since 11 AM. I have a first draft.” She looked at Dillan. ”I want to walk you through it tonight. Not because it needs your approval — you’re the anchor, not an institution, the framework is for the institution to use in relation to you — but because you should understand the legal and diplomatic context before the door opens.”

”Tonight,” he said.

”After dinner,” she said.

He looked at her.

”You’re building a diplomatic framework for an inter-dimensional contact event,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”In one day,” he said.

”First draft,” she said. ”I have five more days.”

He almost smiled.

”Vale,” he said.

”Mm.”

”Is there anything you can’t do in five days,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The almost-smile.

Precise.

”Probably,” she said. ”I haven’t encountered it yet.”

DAY TWO

Vale presented the framework at 9 AM.

Sixty-three pages. First draft, which meant it would be significantly longer by day six, but the core architecture was there — the legal definitions, the diplomatic protocols, the specific framework for what a bilateral inter-dimensional contact event required in terms of representation, documentation, and formal acknowledgment.

She walked them through it for two hours.

Dillan understood perhaps forty percent of the legal architecture. Mira understood the documentation sections completely and had questions about the representation clauses that Vale answered with the precision of someone who had anticipated every question and pre-built the answers. Dana read the whole thing in thirty minutes with the Tracker perception running and identified three pattern inconsistencies that Vale noted without expression and amended while they watched.

Sera read the medical provisions section — which Vale had apparently built from scratch, there being no existing legal framework for the medical management of a sovereign anchor — and said, quietly, ”You interviewed Dr. Yeon.”

”At 7 AM,” Vale confirmed. ”Before the framework presentation. She provided the medical physics baseline.”

”You built medical provisions into an inter-dimensional diplomatic framework,” Sera said.

”The anchor’s physical condition is the primary variable,” Vale said. Exactly what Sera had said yesterday. The field carrying it — the acknowledgment of one frequency by another without direct attribution.

Sera held her gaze.

”Thank you,” she said.

”It’s accurate,” Vale said.

”It’s more than accurate,” Sera said. ”It’s thorough.”

Vale held her gaze.

The almost-smile.

”I know,” she said.

DAY THREE

Dana called everyone to the analysis station at 11 AM.

”The pattern,” she said. ”I have the new category.”

They gathered around the screen.

The world-frequency map filled the display — twenty-eight days of Gate formation data, absorption events, compass assembly, completion, and now the six-day approach of whatever was coming through the door.

Dana pointed at the approach trajectory.

”It’s not a Gate,” she said. ”The Tracker confirmed it this morning. The formation pattern is completely different from every Gate we’ve seen. Gate formations build from the outside in — the membrane thins gradually from the edges toward the center, like a wound opening.” She traced the trajectory on the screen. ”This builds from the inside out. It starts at a central point and expands outward. Like—” she paused.

”A door being unlocked,” Mira said.

”Yes,” Dana said. ”Exactly that. Something on the other side is unlocking it from their direction. We’re not generating this Gate. They are.”

”From Layer 4,” Dillan said.

”From Layer 4,” Dana confirmed. ”The frequency signature matches Lyra’s baseline — the dimensional-origin quality Dr. Yeon identified. Layer 4 material.” She looked at Lyra. ”Your world is opening the door.”

Lyra had been looking at the screen since Dana started talking.

”The unlock pattern,” she said. ”Can you show me the specific frequency?”

Dana pulled it up.

Lyra looked at it for a long time.

”I recognize it,” she said.

”From your world,” he said.

”From a specific person in my world,” she said.

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at Dillan.

”I told you they would send someone with institutional authority,” she said. ”Someone who could speak formally for my world.” She paused. ”The frequency I’m reading in the unlock pattern belongs to—” she stopped. ”The closest human equivalent of their role would be—”

”Ambassador,” Vale said.

”More than that,” Lyra said. ”The person who has been managing the awareness of this world’s anchor approach for six hundred years. Who has known about the pull since it started. Who sent me.” She paused. ”My world’s equivalent of a Director-level authority.” She held Dillan’s gaze. ”They sent the person who has been responsible for this outcome since before I was born.”

”How do they feel about you being here,” Dana asked. ”The unauthorized crossing. Three days early.”

Lyra held her gaze.

”I don’t know,” she said. ”I’ve been thinking about that for three days.”

”Are you worried,” he said.

She was quiet for a moment.

”No,” she said. ”I made the right choice. Whatever their position on the crossing — I made the right choice.” She held his gaze. ”You are home. That’s not a choice I can regret.”

He held her gaze.

”No,” he said. ”It’s not.”

DAY FOUR

Lyra’s frequency changed at 3 AM on day four.

Dillan felt it through the field — the specific shift of the center bond’s complementary resonance doing something he hadn’t felt before. Not alarm. Not distress. Something more complex.

He went to the flexible room.

She was awake. At the desk. Not translating — writing in the document she’d started on the night of the completion. What Comes After.

She looked up when he came in.

”You felt it,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”What was it.”

She looked at the document.

”I’ve been thinking about what it means,” she said. ”To be both things simultaneously.”

”What two things,” he said.

”The center bond,” she said. ”Permanent. Woven into the architecture of what you are.” She paused. ”And a person from Layer 4 who crossed without full authorization and has been here for twenty-seven days and is now going to be in the room when my world’s highest diplomatic authority arrives.” She held his gaze. ”The two things are both true. They don’t conflict. But they’re—” she stopped.

”Heavy,” he said.

”Together,” she said. ”Yes.”

He sat down.

She looked at him.

”You don’t have to be the diplomatic interface if you don’t want to,” he said. ”Vale can—”

”No,” she said. ”I need to be there. Not because it’s my function. Because—” she paused. ”Because the person arriving knew about the pull for six hundred years. They knew it was pointing here. They managed the whole situation from their side — the awareness, the timing, the decision to send me.” She held his gaze. ”They deserve to see that it worked. That I’m here. That the crossing was right.” She paused. ”And I want to see them.”

He held her gaze.

”Someone from home,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”The concept of home,” she said, ”is more complicated when home is a dimensional layer you crossed out of without authorization.” She paused. ”But yes. Someone who knew me before the pull resolved. Someone who remembers what I was when the calibration was wrong.”

He held her gaze.

”Are you ready for that,” he said.

She thought about it.

”No,” she said. ”But I’ll be there anyway.”

He held her gaze.

Then he did something he hadn’t done before.

He picked up the pen from her desk.

Opened What Comes After to the page she’d been writing.

Read what she’d written.

The document is complete. The translation finished. What I knew before the crossing has been fully delivered. What I know now — what twenty-seven days of home has added to the original knowledge — is not in any document.

It is in the bond.

In the field.

In the stone on the windowsill.

In the way he made tea that first morning.

In the way Sera touches things carefully.

In the way Mira turns off the stream.

In the way Dana writes.

In the way Vale lets the not-quite-steady quality be present.

What comes after the document is not another document.

What comes after is living.

And I am, for the first time in six hundred years, doing that.

He set the pen down.

Looked at her.

”This is good,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”It’s true,” she said.

”Yes,” he said. ”That’s what makes it good.”

She looked at the page.

”The ambassador is going to bring more documents,” she said. ”More knowledge. More layers.”

”Maybe,” he said.

”Probably,” she said.

”And you,” he said. ”What are you bringing to that conversation.”

She held his gaze.

She looked at the stone on the windowsill.

”Twenty-seven days of knowing what the pull was for,” she said. ”From the inside.” She paused. ”Nobody else has that. Not the ambassador. Not my world’s six hundred years of awareness.” She held his gaze. ”I have what the crossing was for. Not the theory of it — the actual thing.”

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said. ”That’s what you’re bringing.”

She held his gaze.

The silver-lit eyes.

The center bond.

”I’m not afraid of the meeting,” she said. ”I’m—” she stopped. ”Ready. In the way that twenty-seven days of correct parameters makes you ready for something you were calibrated wrong for for six hundred years.”

He held her gaze.

”Good,” he said.

He stood up.

At the door he paused.

”Lyra,” he said.

”Mm.”

”Whatever the ambassador says,” he said. ”Whatever the offer is. You know my answer to the thing that matters.”

She held his gaze.

”Home,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

”I know,” she said.

DAY FIVE

Mira published the physicist’s model at 7 AM.

Not the full technical paper — Dr. Yeon’s own publication, with permission, going through peer channels. What Mira published was the accessible version: the model translated into the language of someone who had spent twenty-seven days making the most significant event in human history legible to ninety million people and had gotten very good at it.

WHAT’S KNOCKING | THE SIX-DAY GATE | FULL BREAKDOWN

The thumbnail was Dr. Yeon’s diagram — the seven concentric rings, the point in the center labeled Earth.

Ninety-four million concurrent at release.

She watched the number from the analysis station at 8 AM without looking at it.

”The world knows what’s coming,” she said.

”Yes,” Dillan said.

”How do you feel about that,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Like the world should know,” he said. ”It’s their world too. Whatever happens tomorrow affects everyone in it.”

She held his gaze.

”The comments,” she said. ”Do you want to know.”

”Tell me,” he said.

”Split,” she said. ”Roughly equal. Half: excitement. A third: fear. The rest: something in between that people are calling — I’ve read about four thousand comments personally—” she paused, ”—anticipation. Not of something good or something bad. Just of something significant.”

He held her gaze.

”Accurate,” he said.

”Yes,” she said. ”That’s what I thought.” She looked at the number — ninety-seven million now. ”The physicist has received forty-three interview requests. I’ve screened them. I sent her a list of twelve I think she should consider.”

He looked at her.

”You screened forty-three interview requests for a physicist you met two days ago,” he said.

”She’s part of the story,” Mira said. ”The record includes her. Making sure her part of the record is accurate is—” she paused, ”my function. In the compass. This is what I contribute.”

He held her gaze.

The field carrying her frequency at its full real register.

”Thank you,” he said.

”Don’t thank me,” she said. ”It’s what I do.”

He looked at her.

”Sera says that too,” he said.

Mira held his gaze.

Then she looked at the number.

One hundred and two million concurrent.

”I know,” she said. ”We should compare notes sometime.”

He almost smiled.

”You should,” he said.

DAY SIX

He woke at 5 AM.

The field at its overnight quality — five frequencies in their sleep registers, the compass running its quiet continuous operation.

He lay still.

Listened to the city.

Felt the anchor’s awareness extending through the five-kilometer field radius — the city’s frequency map, the oriented Gate signatures, the approach trajectory Dana had been reading for six days, now resolved into a single clear point.

Today.

At noon, Dr. Yeon had projected. The unlock pattern completing at noon based on the formation rate.

Seven hours.

He got up.

Made tea.

Stood at the window while it steeped and looked at the city waking up — the pre-dawn grey becoming the first light becoming the specific quality of a Seoul morning that was twenty-nine-day-old-world ordinary and also the morning a door was going to open between this dimensional layer and the one that had been aware of the pull for six hundred years.

He felt the compass waking up around him.

One by one. The frequencies shifting from sleep to awareness with the specific quality each one carried.

Sera first — both layers snapping to full operational with the speed of someone whose healing function was always the first thing online. Then Dana, the Tracker perception activating mid-dream and running at full capacity before she’d fully surfaced. Then Mira, the bright directed pattern shifting from sleep-warmth to the specific quality of someone who had a camera rig and knew how to use it and was going to be fully deployed today. Then Vale, the calibrated precision assembling itself with the efficient precision of a system that had been running for thirty-one years and knew exactly how to boot up.

Then Lyra.

Her frequency shift was different from the others — not sleep to wakefulness. She hadn’t been asleep. Her frequency had been running at the quiet focused quality of someone who had been thinking since 3 AM and had arrived at something.

He felt her door open.

She came into the kitchen.

He handed her tea.

She took it.

They stood at the window.

”Today,” she said.

”Today,” he said.

”How are you,” she said.

He thought about it.

”Ready,” he said. ”In the same way you described on day four. Not because I have all the information. Because — the compass is complete. The bonds are permanent. Whatever comes through that door today, it’s coming into a structure that already exists and is already sound.” He paused. ”I’m not afraid of an offer. I’m curious about one.”

She held his gaze.

”Curious,” she said.

”The three more layers,” he said. ”The further the pull goes. Whatever the origin hunger was built for beyond what the document described.” He held her gaze. ”I want to know what it is. Not because the hunger requires it. Because it’s interesting.”

She held his gaze.

”Interesting,” she said.

”In every sense that word can mean,” he said. Echoing what she’d said about him on day twenty-seven.

She held his gaze.

The silver-lit eyes.

Something moved through her expression.

”You’re using my words,” she said.

”They’re accurate,” he said.

She held his gaze.

Then she looked at the window.

At the city.

At the Gate signatures above it, oriented, the world building toward noon.

”When the door opens,” she said. ”I’m going to be standing beside you.”

”I know,” he said.

”Not behind you,” she said. ”Beside.”

”I know,” he said.

”The ambassador is going to want to speak to the anchor,” she said. ”Not to the center frequency. To you.”

”I know,” he said.

”And I’m going to be beside you anyway,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Yes,” he said. ”You are.”

She held his gaze.

The pull — arrived. Still. Complete.

And underneath the stillness, something new.

Not hunger.

Anticipation.

”Good,” she said.

The compass assembled at 10 AM.

All five frequencies. The main room. The configuration that had become, over twenty-nine days, so natural that it required no arrangement — everyone found their place without direction, the room organizing itself around the center point the way the world’s Gates organized themselves around the anchor.

Vale had the diplomatic framework. Final version. Ninety-one pages.

Sera had the medical monitoring station running — the field’s biometric data, the specific tracking she’d built for the anchor’s physiological state, calibrated for whatever the door opening might produce.

Dana had the analysis station live — the world-frequency map, the approach trajectory, the new pattern category running at full Tracker capacity.

Mira had the camera rig. Green indicator. Recording. Archive, not content.

Lyra stood at the window. The stone in her hand.

Dillan stood in the center.

Looked at the compass.

”Whatever happens today,” he said, ”happens to all of us. Not just the anchor. The compass.” He held each of their gazes in turn. ”The offer — if it is an offer — is something we discuss together before we answer. Nobody answers on behalf of anyone else.”

”Understood,” Vale said.

”Obviously,” Mira said.

Dana nodded.

Sera nodded.

Lyra turned from the window.

Held his gaze.

”They’re going to ask me first,” she said. ”Before they ask you. I’m the center frequency. I’m the one they sent. They’ll want to know—” she paused.

”What will they want to know,” he said.

”If it was worth it,” she said. ”The crossing. The twenty-nine days. The outcome.” She held his gaze. ”What I was sent for and what I found.”

He held her gaze.

”What will you tell them,” he said.

She looked at the stone in her hand.

Looked at the window.

At the city below and the Gate signatures above and the specific quality of a Seoul morning that was the morning a door was opening and a world that had been pointed at a pull for six hundred years was finally going to see what was on the other side.

She looked at him.

”The truth,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”Which is,” he said.

She held the stone.

Held his gaze.

”That I found home,” she said. ”And I’m not leaving.”

The room was very quiet.

The field running its full ambient read.

Five frequencies. Complete. Permanent.

The compass, holding.

Eleven fifty-seven AM.

Three minutes.

The door, almost open.

He looked at the window.

At the Gate signature above Jongno district — violet, oriented, building toward noon with the specific quality of something unlocking from the other side.

He thought about twenty-nine days.

F-minus. The pull. The first Gate. The hunger and the compass and the completion and the stone on the windowsill and the physicist’s seven concentric rings and the door and the knocking.

He thought about what came before the first day.

The specific Tuesday morning when the sky cracked and the system gave everyone a rank.

He thought: I got F-minus.

He thought: The system invented a new letter for me.

He thought, with the dry internal humor that had survived everything the past twenty-nine days had thrown at it:

I wonder what letter it’s going to need for whatever comes through that door.

He almost smiled.

Noon.

The door opened.
