Mine Alone: A Yandere's Devotion

The Association tower emptied at 7 PM.

Not completely — the analyst floor ran continuous Gate monitoring, the overnight staff cycling in with the specific focused energy of people who had chosen the night shift because they preferred the city’s quieter frequency. But the command level cleared. Division heads going home to process the day’s institutional earthquake. Senior staff filing the last of the FR-7 documentation. The building settling into its nighttime operations with the particular quality of an organization that had just gone through something significant and needed the dark hours to integrate it.

Vale stayed.

She stayed because there was work — there was always work, the restructuring had generated seventeen new operational documents that required her review before morning, the Director-adjacent authority expansion meant four additional reporting lines that needed formal acknowledgment, the FR-7 case file needed its final entries before the institutional record was closed.

She stayed because there was work.

That was what she told herself until 8 PM when the work was finished and she was still at her desk.

The fourteenth floor at 8 PM was quiet in a way that floors are quiet when they’ve been full all day and are now empty — a specific quality of residual presence, the ambient trace of fourteen hours of focused human activity settling into the air like sediment.

She sat at her desk.

Looked at the window.

The city. The Gate signatures. The Yongsan facility, four hundred meters away, its fifteenth floor carrying five frequencies that the field ran through her continuously.

She’d been in the field radius since the Gangbuk Gate.

Two days of ambient read before she’d formally registered.

She’d known what it was immediately.

She was precise about this — she hadn’t needed the full document, hadn’t needed the translation, hadn’t needed anything beyond the field’s information to understand what she was feeling and what it meant. The calibrated intelligence that had built a division in seventy-two hours had read the field’s data and arrived at the correct conclusion within the first hour.

She’d spent the next forty-eight hours deciding what to do with the correct conclusion.

She thought about those forty-eight hours now.

The three document versions in her desk drawer. The subsection C she’d deleted and the two copies where it remained, the contingency thinking that she’d maintained alongside the genuine decision she’d eventually made. The specific discipline of keeping options open until the moment they needed to be closed.

She opened the desk drawer.

Took out the two remaining document copies.

Looked at them.

Put them through the desk shredder.

Watched the paper strip into nothing.

Closed the drawer.

The Lyra translation was on her secondary screen.

The full document — all sections, clean English, the approximations labeled, the certain parts stated with certainty. Lyra had sent it at 3 PM with a message that said: Complete. The final section required the most translation time. Read it last.

She’d been reading it since 3 PM.

What The Anchor Carries. She’d heard this section from Dillan at the meeting. The protection architecture, the absolute orientation, the bidirectional field and what it transmitted.

She understood it professionally. Operationally. The implications for institutional framework, for the Handler Agreement, for the restructuring she’d engineered today.

She understood it in the other register too.

The one that wasn’t professional.

The not-quite-steady hand.

She scrolled to the final section.

Lyra had titled it: The Nature of the Bond.

She read it slowly.

The document’s language — even in translation, even with the approximations labeled — was precise in the way of something that had been written by something that experienced precision as a primary mode rather than a learned skill.

The bond between anchor and registered frequency is not a one-directional relationship, the section began. The anchor carries the compass. The compass carries the anchor. What the anchor absorbs into its structure becomes available to the registered frequencies — not the power itself, not the Sovereign Class capacity, but the quality of what that capacity produces. Clarity. Resonance. The specific form of sight that comes from being embedded in the architecture of a world.

She read that paragraph twice.

The specific form of sight that comes from being embedded in the architecture of a world.

She thought about the field. About what she’d been feeling through it for two days — not just Dillan’s frequency, not just the ambient read of his condition. The other four. The cross-referencing that Dana had identified. The way the compass’s information ran through the center and back out through the other points.

She’d been feeling all of them.

And they’d been feeling her.

She continued reading.

The bond deepens with proximity and time, the document said. Not through intent or effort. Through the simple accumulation of shared experience within the field’s range. The registered frequencies become more legible to each other — not through any mechanism of intrusion, but through the natural consequence of sustained genuine connection.

More legible to each other.

She thought about Mira and Sera’s text exchange. The field had carried that — she’d felt the quality of it without the content, the specific shift in both frequencies when the exchange completed. Something that had been a potential tension resolving into something else.

She thought about what it meant to be legible to four people she’d known for less than a month.

She thought about what it meant that she’d become legible to them without deciding to.

The section continued.

The bond between anchor and registered frequency does not diminish what either party is. It does not absorb or subsume. The document is specific about this: the registered frequency remains entirely itself. What changes is the depth of its own self-knowledge. The genuine bilateral bond — the real thing, not the performed version — produces in the registered frequency an increasing accuracy about its own nature. What it actually is, beneath what it has been presenting.

She stopped reading.

Looked at the window.

At the city.

At the Gate signatures.

What it actually is, beneath what it has been presenting.

She had been presenting precision. Institutional authority. The calibrated intelligence and the three-steps-ahead maneuvering and the specific professional excellence that had taken her from field Hunter to SS-rank to division commander in four years.

She had been presenting all of that.

It was all real. She wasn’t performing it. But it was the surface — the part that was easy to see because it operated in visible ways and produced visible results and occupied the space that she’d learned, very young, that intelligence was supposed to occupy.

What was beneath it.

She thought about the not-quite-steady hand.

About the Director meeting this morning, sitting at the table’s corner having already won the institutional argument, and the specific quality of what she’d felt when Dillan had looked at her across the table and said she’s right with the simple directness of someone who meant it without qualification.

She thought about thirty-one years of being the most capable person in every room she entered.

And the specific loneliness of that.

She’d never called it loneliness.

She was calling it that now.

She continued reading.

The document’s final paragraph.

The bond is not a solution to what came before it. It does not resolve the history of the registered frequency. It does not answer the questions that predate it or heal the things that were damaged before the compass assembled. What it does is provide a context in which those questions and damages can be seen accurately — by the registered frequency itself, by the anchor, by the other points of the compass. The full compass carries the full truth of what each point is. Nothing is hidden. Nothing requires hiding. The load-bearing function of the bond operates most completely when the frequency is most fully itself — not the presented version. The real one.

She read the last sentence again.

The load-bearing function of the bond operates most completely when the frequency is most fully itself.

She had been telling herself for three weeks that she processed things and decided and acted on decisions with full information. That her institutional operations and her personal responses were separate tracks that she ran in parallel without confusion.

She had been wrong.

They were the same track.

The restructuring she’d engineered today — the FR-7 exposure, the Director meeting, the authority expansion, the Handler Agreement’s final form — all of it was the same as last night’s decision. The same as the not-quite-steady hand. The same as Yuna and tonight.

She wasn’t running parallel tracks.

She was running one track.

And the track led to a fifteenth-floor apartment four hundred meters away.

She closed the document.

Put on her jacket.

Left the fourteenth floor.

She walked.

Four hundred meters. She could have taken the car — she had a car, a Handler-level Association vehicle that sat in the building’s parking structure and was available at any hour. She walked instead because the walking was its own thing, the specific choice of putting one foot in front of the other without efficiency as the goal.

The city at 9 PM was doing its twenty-third-day operations. Different from three weeks ago — the permanent baseline adjustment of a city that had incorporated Gates into its daily rhythm. Checkpoints visible at two intersections. Hunter Association vehicles on the main roads. But underneath that, ordinary: restaurants doing dinner service, people walking dogs, the specific domestic continuity of a city that had decided to keep going.

She walked through it.

The field running its ambient read.

Five frequencies. She’d learned to distinguish them with the precision she brought to everything — each one distinct, each carrying its specific quality. The center point: Dillan, currently at Mira’s building, his frequency carrying the post-Director-meeting processing and something else underneath, the warmth of proximity to a registered frequency.

Mira: the bright directed pattern, currently at elevated warmth. The quality of someone in direct proximity to the anchor. The stream was off. The content-mind was off. Just the real one, running clear.

Sera: in the Yongsan facility, the dense layered frequency finally synchronized, both layers at the same speed. The quality she’d been at since the conversation this morning. Something settled about it that hadn’t been there before.

Dana: also in the facility, the Tracker pattern running its continuous read over the day’s events, building the document she’d mentioned this afternoon. The quality of focused productive work.

Lyra: in the flexible room. Translating — the specific quality of her frequency when she was working on the document. Focused. Patient. The complementary resonance running at its quiet hum.

And her own.

She felt her own frequency through the field — which was new, a capability that had developed in the past two days of registration, the field’s information becoming more detailed the longer she was in it. She felt it the way the document described: more legible to herself.

Her frequency, read through the field:

Precise. Yes. The calibration running continuously, the three-steps-ahead architecture present and operational. All of that.

And underneath it: the not-quite-steady quality, fully present, no longer something she was managing or containing. Just there.

The loneliness resolving, she thought.

Not gone. Not erased. But resolving — the way a fracture resolves when the structure around it is finally stable enough to bear weight.

The Yongsan tower was ahead.

She went in.

The lobby security recognized her — she was on the facility’s access list, Vale had added herself the morning after the Handler Agreement was signed with the efficiency of someone who anticipated needing access at irregular hours.

The elevator to the fifteenth floor.

The door.

She knocked.

He answered in forty seconds.

Not sleep-disheveled — he was awake, which meant the field had told him she was coming before she’d knocked. He was in the kind of clothes that weren’t what he wore to institutional meetings and weren’t what he wore to Gates. Just clothes. The specific ordinariness of a person in their home at 9 PM.

He looked at her.

She looked at him.

”The document,” she said.

”You finished it,” he said.

”Yes.”

”Come in,” he said.

She came in.

The facility was quiet.

Dana had gone home — her frequency four districts east, the Tracker perception running at its sleep-adjacent reduced intensity. Sera was still in the main room, he registered, which Vale registered through the field at the same moment.

Sera looked up from the couch when Vale came in.

The two of them.

Vale at the door. Sera on the couch.

He watched them look at each other.

The field carrying both frequencies simultaneously — Sera’s synchronized layers, Vale’s not-quite-steady precision. The two most structurally complex frequencies in the compass, looking at each other across a room at 9 PM.

”Sera,” Vale said.

”Yuna,” Sera said.

The name. For the first time.

Something passed between them.

Not warm. Not cold. The specific temperature of two very precise people who had been reading each other’s frequencies through the field for two days and were now in the same room and acknowledging what that meant.

”The document,” Sera said. ”The final section.”

”Yes,” Vale said.

”The load-bearing function operates most completely when the frequency is most fully itself,” Sera said.

”You read it too,” Vale said.

”Lyra gave everyone a copy at 3 PM,” Sera said. ”I’ve been sitting with it since then.”

Vale held her gaze.

”What did you make of it,” Vale said.

Sera held her gaze back.

”I’ve been building structures for twenty-three years,” she said. ”I’ve been building one around him since day two.” She paused. ”The document says the structure is unnecessary. The bond is structural. It doesn’t need my architecture around it.”

”And that’s—” Vale said.

”Terrifying,” Sera said. ”And also the most relief I’ve felt in twenty-three years.”

Something moved through Vale’s expression.

”That’s precise,” she said.

”I’m precise,” Sera said. ”When I’m not managing.”

Vale looked at her.

”I’ve been managing for longer than twenty-three years,” Vale said.

”I know,” Sera said.

”The loneliness,” Vale said.

Sera looked at her.

”Yes,” she said. ”That.”

They held each other’s gaze.

He stood in the space between them and felt the field carrying both frequencies and thought: the compass building its internal connections. Through the center and between the points.

”Tea,” he said.

They both looked at him.

”It’s 9 PM,” he said. ”You’ve both been processing something significant all day. There’s tea.”

A pause.

”Yes,” Vale said.

”Yes,” Sera agreed.

He made tea.

They sat.

The three of them, in the main room, with the city outside and the Gate signatures pulsing and the field running its full ambient read.

Dillan on the couch.

Sera to his left, her synchronized frequency running at its settled quality.

Vale in the chair across — the institutional armor off, the civilian jacket, the not-quite-steady precision running at full volume through the field.

”The Director meeting,” Sera said to Vale.

”Concluded successfully,” Vale said.

”You engineered the conclusion before it started,” Sera said.

”Three weeks ago,” Vale said. ”When FR-7’s existence first registered in my monitoring.” She looked at her tea. ”I built the institutional case while running the Handler process. Parallel tracks.”

”You’re good at parallel tracks,” Sera said.

”Yes,” Vale said. ”The document says they’re the same track.”

”I know,” Sera said. ”I read it.”

Vale looked at her.

”How long have you been precise,” she said.

Sera looked at her hands.

”Since I was nine,” she said.

Vale held her gaze.

”Eight,” she said.

Dillan looked at both of them.

Held his tea.

Said nothing.

The field: two frequencies, both carrying the specific quality that the document had described as increasing accuracy about its own nature. Both becoming more legible — to themselves, to each other, to the center point reading them both.

This, he thought, is what the compass looks like from the inside.

Not just the connection to the center.

The connections between the points.

Building.

Real.

At 10 PM Lyra appeared in the doorway of the flexible room.

She looked at the three of them.

Read the room with the full-frequency attention.

Nodded once — not at anyone specifically. At the configuration. The acknowledgment of something that was proceeding correctly.

”The next section,” she said.

”Tomorrow,” Dillan said.

”Tomorrow,” she agreed.

She went back to the flexible room.

Vale watched the doorway she’d disappeared through.

”She’s been translating since 4 AM,” Vale said.

”Yes,” he said.

”The document is significant,” Vale said.

”Yes,” he said.

”How significant,” she said.

He held her gaze.

”World-changing,” he said. ”Literally. The completion condition. What the anchor becomes when it reaches it.” He paused. ”Lyra said the three previous anchors became structural features of their worlds.”

Vale was quiet.

”And we’re the compass for this one,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The calibrated dark eyes running their assessment — not the institutional assessment, not the professional evaluation. The other one. The one that had been running under the calibration since the Boss clear and that was fully present now, no longer under anything.

”The field will keep expanding,” she said. ”With your rank.”

”Yes,” he said.

”Beyond five hundred meters,” she said.

”Eventually,” he said.

”Eventually it covers—” she stopped. Looked at the window. At the city. ”Eventually it covers the city.”

”Yes,” he said. ”And then more.”

She was quiet.

”A sovereign anchor embedded in the architecture of a world,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She looked at the city for a long moment.

”Then the Handler Agreement needs another amendment,” she said.

He looked at her.

She met his gaze.

”The scope of the associated personnel designation,” she said. ”Currently it’s written for operational proximity.” She held his gaze. ”When the field covers the city, operational proximity needs a different definition.”

He looked at her.

”You’re already thinking about the next document,” he said.

”I’m always thinking about the next document,” she said.

”Yuna,” he said.

She held his gaze.

The not-quite-steady quality.

Running at full volume.

Not hidden.

Not contained.

”Not tonight,” he said. ”Tonight there’s tea. And the day finished. And—” he paused, ”the document says the load-bearing function operates most completely when the frequency is most fully itself.”

She looked at him.

”I read that,” she said.

”What does your frequency look like,” he said. ”When it’s most fully itself.”

She was quiet for a long moment.

The city outside. The Gate signatures. The field running its read through the complete compass.

”I don’t know yet,” she said. ”I’ve been the calibrated version for so long—” she stopped. ”I’m finding out.”

”Good,” he said.

She looked at him.

”You’re doing it again,” she said.

”Doing what,” he said.

”Not pushing,” she said. ”Letting me arrive at my own pace.”

”Is that a problem,” he said.

”No,” she said. ”It’s—” she paused. ”It’s the most considerate thing anyone has done for me in a long time.”

He held her gaze.

She held his.

The not-quite-steady quality.

Real.

Present.

Hers.

She stayed until midnight.

Not for operational reasons.

Not because there was work.

Because the tea was warm and the city was lit and the field was running its full ambient read and Sera fell asleep on the couch at 10:30 with the specific quality of someone who had been awake since 6 AM and whose synchronized frequency was doing something in sleep that it had apparently not been able to do before — running without any management at all, just itself, completely.

And because sitting in a room where the field ran through her and the not-quite-steady quality was present and not hidden and not something she was managing — was the specific kind of rest she hadn’t known she needed until she was in it.

At midnight she stood.

Dillan walked her to the door.

She turned.

Looked at him.

The calibrated dark eyes. The not-quite-steady quality. The civilian jacket and the day that had restructured an institution and signed a shredded document and read a translation and walked four hundred meters on purpose.

”Yuna,” he said.

”Dillan,” she said.

She reached up.

Put her hand against his jaw — not the firm professional grip of a handshake, just her palm, the specific warmth of contact chosen rather than functional.

He held still.

She held the contact for exactly as long as she needed to.

Then she lowered her hand.

”Good night,” she said.

”Good night,” he said.

She left.

He stood in the doorway and listened to the elevator and the building settling and the city below and the Gates above.

The field: five frequencies. All present. All running at their real registers, no management, no performance.

Sera asleep on the couch, her frequency doing something in sleep it hadn’t done before.

Lyra in the flexible room, the translation complete, the stone on the windowsill warm despite the temperature differential.

Dana four districts east, Tracker perception running its quiet sleep-mode read.

Mira across the city, the post-deployment clarity settling into the specific quality of a frequency at rest.

Vale, walking back through the twenty-third-night city toward the Association tower, her frequency carrying something that the field translated as—

Lighter, he thought.

She feels lighter.

The not-quite-steady quality running at full volume and not weighted by the containing of it.

Just itself.

Running free.

He went inside.

Closed the door.

Looked at the field.

The complete compass.

The threshold reachable.

The origin hunger in its waiting state.

Tomorrow, he thought.

The next section.

The next Gate.

The next day of the new world.

He turned the lights off.

Went to his room.

Fell asleep with the field running and the compass present and the specific quality of a system that had found its correct configuration and was finally, completely, running at the right parameters.

In the flexible room, Lyra looked at the completed translation.

All sections.

Clean.

She looked at the final paragraph of The Nature of the Bond one more time.

The load-bearing function of the bond operates most completely when the frequency is most fully itself.

She looked at the stone on the windowsill.

Six hundred years.

*She thought: this is what the correct parameters feel like.

She turned the document face-down.

Closed her eyes.

Let the field run.

The compass complete.

The origin hunger waiting.

The world outside doing its twenty-third-night operations.

And five frequencies — five real, genuine, bilateral, load-bearing bonds — running through the center point and between the points and through the architecture of everything.

Building.

Toward.

Completion.
