“A strange machine and …

three monsters that are at least two meters tall?!”

“But none of these things have moved; they seem inert.

Did I see it wrong?”

What Jia Yan had glimpsed was a giant square machine.

The machine had a silver exterior and was about three meters in height and width.

At its base were dozens of pipes rooted underground.

Jia Yan didn’t see the specifics.

In the fraction of a second as he flew past, he spotted what seemed like three hideously grotesque monsters squatting next to the machine!

All three monsters were squatting next to the machine, standing in the same posture, lined up in a row, utterly motionless.

Because Jia Yan was moving too fast, he could only roughly tell that these three monsters each had six legs.

Then, he couldn’t see any further details before quickly passing by!

Buzz buzz buzz—

The massive army of giant silkworms, like vicious fighter jets charging towards the enemy.

Some were shooting out from around the corner, a few were even unable to turn in time and crashed directly into the cave walls!

The noise created by these gigantic flying creatures shook Jia Yan out of his stupor.

“No matter what these things are, I need to get away from the immediate danger first!”

Seeing that the silkworms were still relentlessly attacking, Jia Yan had no choice but to spread his wings and increase his speed to maximum!

The scenery around him began to whiz past!

And the giant silkworms pursuing from behind were gradually left behind!

Once he reached the open space in the underground world, Jia Yan didn’t have to worry about bumping into anything in the narrow interior of the burrow.

Coupled with his earlier imagined flight, his speed increased yet another level!

Within no time, he plunged into the cave that led to the crevice!

“Just a little further and I’ll be at the crevice.

I can go up there and quickly exit from the Northeast Wild Tiger’s factory workshop!”

Jia Yan initially didn’t want to return to the surface so soon, but it seemed that the master of this underground world didn’t appreciate his uninvited presence.

He had no choice but to leave.

“I’ve arrived!”

Jia Yan spotted a gaping hole at the top of the cave, which was the crevice he had fallen through.

Jia Yan was about to fly there!

But a strong fluttering noise from behind drew his vigilant attention!

Out of the corner of his compound eyes, Jia Yan saw a purple figure quickly break away from the massive silkworm army.

It was accelerating towards Jia Yan at a speed more than double that of the other silkworms!

“Purple silkworm!” Jia Yan was taken aback!

Being chased by these purple silkworms wouldn’t be any fun!

Jia Yan could almost certainly confirm that these purple creatures, which were almost half a meter in size, had substantial combat power.

If he were intercepted by them, he would likely die!

And that’s not to mention the nearly thousand-strong army of silkworms trailing behind him!

“Escape!” Jia Yan took one look and quickly flapped his wings, rushing towards the crevice.

The giant purple silkworm, like a true warrior, seemed to exude the aura of a seasoned combatant.

Seeing Jia Yan sneak into the crevice in the upper part of the cave, it didn’t hesitate and immediately gave chase along the passage!

Whoosh whoosh!

Strong winds began to howl around him.

Jia Yan, through the occasional glowing algae around, had difficulty discerning his path.

But the giant purple silkworm behind him didn’t seem to have any obstacles, its speed was increasing instead of decreasing, closing up on Jia Yan bit by bit.

Bang!

In the limited field of vision, Jia Yan finally ran into a protruding rock in the passage.

To his annoyance, it was the same rock where he had placed the dead silkworm just a few days ago.

He had lingered here for some time, and despite knowing the place so well, he had hit it in his frantic escape!

In that moment, the purple silkworm had already chased up to his tail!

It extended its front legs, reaching out for Jia Yan’s body in mid-air.

But what this giant purple mosquito didn’t expect was that Jia Yan’s legs were much longer than his body, and they were incredibly strong too!

When it stretched out its forelegs, Jia Yan aimed his hind legs directly at the Giant Mosquito’s forehead and forcefully kicked!

This giant purple Glires didn’t expect Jia Yan’s hind legs to be so long.

Before its forelegs could even hook onto his opponent’s body, its head was kicked.

It was immediately sent flying backwards in mid-air!

Utilizing the reactive force in mid-air, Jia Yan further increased his flight speed.

He shot past this protruding rock and swiftly flew upwards!

Meanwhile, the purple Glires, after pursuing for a while, seemed to be blocked by an invisible line.

With its compound eyes as cold as ice, it watched as Jia Yan’s figure receded into the distance.

“Why isn’t it chasing after me?”

Jia Yan oddly observed the purple Glires below and a question flashed through his mind.

But he quickly realized the reason!

“Oxygen!

It seems like my body is a bit short of oxygen!

I can’t use my strength!”

Jia Yan hastily decelerated his downward momentum in the tunnel, resting a moment on a rock surface.

He finally understood why the purple Glires had not chased after him.

Even he, a mutant mosquito that had only lived in the highly oxygenated underground world for a few days, was now feeling somewhat oxygen-deficient near the surface.

It made sense that the massive-bodied purple Glires, which had long adapted to the highly concentrated oxygen of the underground world through evolution, would not dare to venture too close to the earth’s surface!

But he was different.

Despite having undergone a mutation and ingesting the mysterious liquid twice in the underground world, his overall body shape was still based on the template of an external life form.

At least when it came to adapting to oxygen shortage, he would be more adaptable to outside conditions than the underground creatures!

“It doesn’t matter, I can adapt!

The mutation also brought changes to my respiratory system.

I just never had to use these changes while I was in the underground world…”

Typically, mosquitoes simply rely on respiratory holes at the side of their abdomen for involuntary breathing.

However, after his mutation, Jia Yan discovered a fundamental change to his respiratory organs.

Namely, minute muscles beside his respiratory holes were gradually extending out, forming a muscle group with a closing mechanism!

Although this is quite a basic change, Jia Yan discovered that by closing this muscle group, he was able to ‘inhale’ air from outside by utilizing the muscle combination inside his respiratory holes.

Moreover, after inhaling the air, his body’s oxygen conversion rate far exceeded his previous levels.

This was the reason why he could still approach the surface without activating his ‘autonomous breathing mechanism’.

Feeling assured that this ‘autonomous breathing mechanism’, which had not been activated once since his mutation, was working properly, Jia Yan tried using the closing muscles next to his respiratory holes.

“I can indeed inhale air, but it’s quite annoying and uncomfortable to get used to the constant breathing sensation like humans since I didn’t have autonomous respiratory organs before.

However, I was a human before, so it should be easy to get used to this sensation.

I just need to persevere for a few days!”

After activating the autonomous breathing mechanism, air quickly ‘entered’ into his body’s ‘combined organs’.

Then, through his altered combined organs, it was swiftly distributed to the parts of his body that required oxygen.

This way, the lack of oxygen issue was largely resolved!

Of course, with Jia Yan’s massive body, using such a simple ‘breathing organ’ to completely resolve the oxygen supply problem was essentially impossible.

He just has to reduce oxygen consumption as much as possible at all times or take frequent rests.

As for whether his body could mutate even further in the future, possess a stronger respiratory mechanism, or even surpass humans and transcend the ‘breathing’ stage, who knows!

At least Jia Yan still had hope.

His path of mutation still held great potential.

“It’s okay, I’ve been in the underground world for so long, and now that I’ve been driven out by the master, I can check out the outside and see if anything has changed.

I just hope that when I’m driven out from the inside, the master on the outside won’t welcome me either.

Then, there would really be nowhere for me to go in this world.”

The “master” Jia Yan referred to outside was naturally humans.

Although he said so in his heart, he understood very well that his extremely exaggerated and mutated large body would definitely cause a huge stir if he went to the outside world.

So, he has to be cautious.

Jia Yan, who was once a human, understood very well that attracting the attention of humans was much more terrifying than attracting the attention of the purple Glires in the underground world!

“This time when I go out, I estimate there will be very few creatures in the wilderness that can threaten me.

My only potential enemies would be humans!”

Because the master of the underground world was unwelcoming, Jia Yan had no choice but to temporarily forget about it.

He would have to wait until he formulated a plan upon his departure before he could possibly return and face the powerful army of Glires.

Not to mention the peculiar machinery and the seemingly lifeless terrifying creature beside it.

There were still many mysteries in the underground world waiting for Jia Yan to explore once he became stronger.

Lying in the tunnel forever would not do, so once Jia Yan mentally prepared himself, he made his move!

With a flap of his wings, he soared to the upper part of the tunnel!

The pipe leading to the factory boiler was not far away!

To be continued.

I’m sorry, but I’m feeling a bit unwell today.

Conveniently, this chapter is the ending of the second volume, so I’m going to rest a bit.

Therefore, there’s only one update for today, for the very time since the start of this book.

Alas, my apologies!

Starting tomorrow will be the new chapter ‘The Giant Mosquito Begins to Shine!’.

A new volume, and a new story!

I hope everyone will enjoy it.
