Beating Instances through Words Left by the Dead

Chapter 1009: Chapter 421: Failed Imaginary Divinity_2

In the blink of an eye, the Undying Sacred Fire devoured the blood flames and rolled back toward the giant hound.

Shrouded in white fire, the giant hound halted its forward rush, fell to the ground and writhed, trying to smother the flames on its body.

Erin kept walking, drawing the Eternal Lake. Pale blue Lake Light gathered into a blade, radiating a glow that calmed the heart.

She swung the Eternal Lake; the blade formed of Lake Light flashed across the blood-colored giant hound. The edge didn’t leave a wound on its body, but the hound’s struggles gradually ceased, and its eyes, once crazed and blood-red, slowly cleared.

”Be freed.”

The blood-colored giant hound seemed to understand Erin’s words. It let out two soft whimpers and slowly closed its eyes.

As the blood-colored giant hound stopped struggling, its massive body rapidly shrank. In just a few breaths, its ten-meter-long frame dwindled into a corpse about two meters tall, halfway between a normal human and a Surface Person.

By the standards of Surface People, the corpse before them had yet to reach full adulthood. His skin still retained the rock-like keratin texture unique to Surface People, along with a more burly, powerful physique, but his torso and limbs were no longer grotesquely swollen, and his fingers had returned to a normal human shape.

Judging from the corpse, he seemed to be a new type of human that combined traits of Surface People and Underground People.

Only, just like those Surface People outside, he had already met Death long ago. The only reason he could still move was the black aura inside him, which had solidified his Death.

When the blood-colored giant hound launched its attack at them, the hatred and madness in its eyes left a deep impression on Wu Chang.

Given the Power the blood-colored giant hound wielded, its Death should have left behind a grudge.

Just as he expected, a purplish-red resentment indeed lingered on the corpse of the Surface Person.

Only this strand of resentment appeared on him, yet was not entirely confined to him.

When the blood-colored giant hound had appeared, its whole body was bright red, blood flowing over it, as if it had just been dredged up from a blood pool.

So the ”blood” on the blood-colored giant hound was not actual blood, but a portion of the resentment.

Staring at the knee-deep blood on the ground, Wu Chang finally realized that the blood pool packed with black buildings and endlessly overflowing—its very existence was a single colossal mass of resentment.

Resentment on such a scale clearly did not come from the blood-colored giant hound alone, but was formed by the fusion of many people’s grudges.

If they wanted to flip through this resentment, they would have to reach the very center of the blood pool and behold the core of the grudge.

Wu Chang said to Wu: ”Captain Wu, you stay outside. What comes next is already beyond what you can handle.”

That Wu, at merely sixty years of age, still held the post of exploration team captain and fought on the front line. Apart from his own solid skill, it was because he was stubborn enough, refusing to admit he was old.

Many people had advised him to retire and stop risking the Surface, but every time he would say:

”The danger I’ve run into outnumbers the people you lot have ever met. When you bunch of greenhorns can look at a Surface Person without your hands shaking, that’s when I’ll be able to retire in peace.”

He had joined the Surface exploration team at sixteen. More than forty years had passed since then; he thought he had weathered every storm and wave there was, that nothing could frighten him anymore.

Yet just now, when that blood-colored giant hound charged straight at them, he realized he was still too young, his experience still too shallow.

He tried several times to tough it out, but to this moment he still couldn’t stop his hands from trembling, laying bare his true condition.

Even though the blood-colored giant hound was now completely dead, he remained steeped in that pressure that had struck straight at the soul.

This time, he couldn’t keep up his stubborn front. He said, ”Alright, I’ll wait for you outside. If there’s danger, remember to send a signal. I’ll support you at once.”

Wu piloted the Mecha to the outside of the black buildings. Perhaps once he went back this time, he really should retire.

Let alone Wu, even He Yi couldn’t keep his mood steady after what he’d just witnessed.

In terms of Ability, the blood-colored giant hound wasn’t necessarily stronger than the Desire Mother Goddess who wielded the Desire Stele, but purely in impact and sense of oppression, what He Yi felt from the blood-colored giant hound was fiercer.

He didn’t fear the blood-colored giant hound, but to defeat it—even with Tyrant at his side—he would have to pay a price, and that price could very well be Life.

Ever since He Yun created the Divine Mecha, He Yi had been unable to find an opponent worth the fight, sinking into that ”invincible and so very lonely” mindset.

The pressure from the blood-colored giant hound rekindled battle lust he’d lost for a long time. Just as he was preparing to fight the toughest battle of his life, the blood-colored giant hound was one-shot by Erin’s sword.

Looking at the fallen blood-colored giant hound, He Yi’s eyes were full of melancholy, as if the one lying there wasn’t the hound, but himself.

He knew that even if he took its place, facing Erin, he wouldn’t last a single strike.

He’d already been partly shaken after witnessing Wu Chang’s true Power, and now Erin’s one sword cut off his last shred of pride.

So the World was this vast. Before a true God, he was just like that blood-colored giant hound, with no capital to resist at all, a roadside mutt to be casually kicked to Death.

Though plummeting from invincible realm straight down to roadside realm was a blow to his confidence, after that brief loss came a surge of exhilaration.

Precisely because he was weak enough, and there were more than enough strong beings beyond his understanding, he now had the drive to keep moving forward.

In an instant, He Yi felt his whole perspective burst open, his mindset soaring.

Beep, beep, beep.

A crisp series of alerts rang out from Tyrant’s Mecha, catching Wu Chang’s attention.
