The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

”Moreover, after we established the city’s DNA system, we conducted an in-depth inspection and analysis of the DNA system. We entered data into the database for comparison, but found no matches with any deceased individuals. Not even the missing relatives matched. What are the chances of this happening?”

Upon hearing this, Jiang An spoke up: ”Brother, the premise of DNA comparison technology is that the database contains the deceased’s personal or genetic information.”

”But if the gene pool doesn’t contain the deceased’s information, how can we conduct a comparison?”

Hearing this, Director Hou nodded, deeply understanding the situation.

Nowadays, many people have unwavering faith in DNA comparison technology, believing that as long as there’s contact, you leave falling cells behind, and a database comparison can determine who you are.

But the premise for this comparison is that the sample database must have the genotype of Zhang San or Li Si to carry out the comparison.

If the database doesn’t have Zhang San or Li Si’s genotype, then with whom can you compare?

It’s like screws and nuts; if you don’t have screws, what’s the use of only having nuts?

After saying this, Jiang An spoke again: ”Therefore, I think we should analyze from two angles: first, break through by examining the characteristics of the killer, mainly inspecting if there are any traces left on the body parts that we haven’t discovered yet.”

”Secondly, we should sort through related cases to see if there’s a case of switching identities akin to swapping the crown prince for a commoner.”

Qin Feng asked, ”Do you mean that even the dead can change identities?”

Jiang An replied, ”Some might think such occurrences are rare, but in Jiangcheng, I’ve encountered similar cases.”

”But who would cancel a deceased’s residence registration?”

”You know, if you’re declared dead now, everything attached to you might be gone—no social security, no ID card, not even able to take a ride.”

However, as everyone was still confused, Jiang An spoke up: ”If the deceased used this method for a large financial income, wouldn’t it make sense? Could there be some special cases of insurance fraud?”

As soon as this viewpoint was proposed, everyone’s eyes lit up.

Especially Director Hou and Deputy Director Chen Guan, both seasoned detectives, instantly grasped the investigative direction of the case.

The two nodded repeatedly, saying, ”That’s it, this is indeed a very good idea.”

Initially, the police officers sitting opposite were somewhat distrustful and skeptical, but now they were clearly focusing on Jiang An, their expressions shifting.

To think of so much in such a short time, and with such clear thinking, isn’t simple!

Then Jiang An continued, ”So concerning the investigation direction, I have two suggestions for the leader to decide.”

After speaking, he turned to Director Hou, ”I suggest re-examining the existing body parts. Although it’s only partial remains, material evidence is crucial.

Secondly, I suggest conducting meticulous reviews of all death cases within two years after the incident, especially those involving damage to appearances, skeletal remains, or related to insurance compensation, to see if there’s a situation where only the skull and partial perineal skeleton remain after death. If such cases exist, then we’ll focus on investigating them.”

Pausing for a moment, he continued, ”During this process, I believe that aside from fire cases leading to the destruction of appearance and limbs.”

”Another point to note is that regarding insurance compensations, potential identity cancellations, or fugitives assuming new roles need to be included in our principal review scope.”

After speaking, he turned to Director Hou and said, ”Director Hou, please have the leader make the final decision on this suggestion.”

Director Hou nodded after listening, saying, ”Captain Jiang An’s analysis just now was excellent, truly a surprise for me.”

”In our criminal investigation processes, especially with unsolved homicide cases, the scope for research is very limited.”

While speaking, he turned to look at the projector, continuing, ”Especially with this case, we’ve conducted it multiple times, repeatedly reopening the unsolved homicide case, but haven’t had any breakthroughs.”

”Today, after hearing Captain Jiang An’s analysis, I suddenly feel there were indeed issues with our previous investigative approaches.”

Jiang An’s suggestion of focusing on the suspect’s characteristics and considering the uses and destination of the missing body parts sets our upcoming direction.

Two paths: One is to sort all unnatural death cases within two years after the incident as Captain Jiang An proposed.

Besides criminal cases, civil cases involving death should also be reviewed.

Focus on whether the deceased’s death led to identity cancellation, resulting in civil or criminal liability issues, which includes insurance compensation and cases of fugitive evasion.

The second path requires a forensic examination of these body parts to check for trace evidence we have yet to discover.

Jiang An is renowned in the province’s forensic community and stands at the forefront among young forensic experts.

So, let’s have Captain Jiang personally conduct a re-examination to see if there are aspects worth deeply digging into.”

After Director Hou finished speaking, he glanced at Chen Guan. Since Chen Guan was the local main leader, it was necessary to consult him after work arrangements.

Chen Guan promptly nodded, ”I completely agree with the leader and deputy leader’s arrangements and instructions.”

”Then, let’s proceed with these two paths separately.”

”If at any time our predecessors and senior colleagues’ guidance and help are needed, I hope everyone will support us without reservation, so that we can significantly advance in this case.”

When Deputy Director Chen Guan announced the meeting’s conclusion, the two senior officers opposite still seemed reluctant to leave their seats.

One used to be a deputy in charge of administration, and the other a leader of the criminal investigation team.

Seeing this, both Chen Guan and Director Hou were somewhat surprised.

The two exchanged glances filled with deep curiosity.

What’s this?

Are they not satisfied with our previous work arrangements?

”Mr. Zhang, Mr. Li, do you have anything you’d like to say?”

Upon hearing this, the two slowly stood up.

Director Zhang sighed while looking at Chen Guan, ”Mr. Chen, we really are getting old; our bodies can’t hold up anymore.”

”But this case is at the forefront of our minds, something we’ve dreamt of solving.”

”Captain Jiang’s words just now gave us some confidence, making us feel there’s a glimmer of hope.”

After speaking, he turned to look at his old colleague beside him and continued, ”We don’t have much time left. Our biggest regret this lifetime is that this case remains unsolved, and there’s no justice for the victim.”

Hearing this, Director Hou, Chen Guan, and Jiang An were momentarily stunned.

Chen Guan hurriedly said, ”Oh, both of you look robust, why say such things?”

At this moment, Director Zhang shook his head with a bitter smile, ”Despite appearances, we’re actually in the late stages of cancer; doctors say we have at most two years left.”

”So we’re just hoping that before closing our eyes, we can see this case resolved, and then we’d pass on with some peace. We entrust this to you all.”

Upon hearing this, the three men’s expressions instantly became somber.

They initially thought that reopening this case was just to conclude an old file, but now it even became these old officers’ last wish in life.

In an instant, the entire conference room fell silent, only filled with the sound of each other’s breath...
