The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Meanwhile, inside the Criminal Investigation Team’s interrogation room.

Qin Feng and Wan sat side-by-side, facing Wang Can, launching an in-depth and intense ”soul interrogation”.

When Wang Can lifted his slightly frantic eyes and tentatively asked, ”Have you... heard something?”

As soon as this question came out, Qin Feng’s heart tightened abruptly.

He keenly sensed that this seemingly casual question might actually expose cracks in Wang Can’s psychological defense.

In the art of interrogation, silence is often the most alarming form of resistance.

Once the other party starts asking questions, attempting to gauge the truth or deception, it means his inner resolve has wavered, eager to guess the boundaries of what the police know.

This is the best opportunity to crack the shell of truth.

Unperturbed, Qin Feng leaned back slightly and casually reached into his pocket, pulling out a slightly worn pack of cigarettes.

He took one out, tapped it lightly on the table, then snapped the lighter with a ”click”.

Smoke wafted up, dispersing in front of him, as if setting a psychological buffer for the upcoming conversation.

He took a deep drag before looking at Wang Can through the thin mist, his tone calm yet filled with intensity, ”Of course, we’ve heard a few things. Otherwise—”

He deliberately extended the tone, locking eyes with Wang Can’s flickering gaze, ”Why do you think we pulled this case out again and found you once more?”

These words were like Tai Chi, soft yet firm.

Neither revealing their hand nor gently tossing the question back to the other party.

Interrogation is sometimes like a psychological duel; if you don’t show your cards, I remain inscrutable, everything left unsaid, making you guess and fret.

As the words fell, Wang Can noticeably shifted uneasily.

His Adam’s apple rolled as he repeatedly muttered, ”What did you hear? ...Ah? What did you really hear?”

At this moment, Wan, who had been calmly observing, raised his head, his stern gaze sweeping over Wang Can as he interjected, ”Our captain’s meaning was clear just now.”

”It’s not about us reporting what we’ve heard to you right now, but giving you an opportunity to voluntarily explain.”

He gestured to the conspicuous slogans on the walls—”Confess for leniency, resist for severity.”

”Look at those words on the wall. If you can’t seize this last chance to confess voluntarily,” Wan’s tone turned harsh, ”when we lay the facts bare before you, forcing you to nod and admit—it’s not a confession at all.”

”By then, any possibility for lenient treatment will vanish, and what awaits you will be the most severe legal judgment.”

These words were like a final heavy hammer.

As they fell, Wang Can seemed to have his psychological defenses completely breached, suddenly becoming agitated, gripping the edge of the table, his voice trembling, ”I didn’t want to return the money! I really... I meant well! I didn’t know he would die!”

Upon these words, Qin Feng and Wan’s eyes nearly simultaneously sharpened, exchanging a seemingly imperceptible glance—a slight twitch at the corner of their mouths, the unique micro-expression of detectives capturing a key breakthrough.

They knew the core of the case was finally about to emerge.

Qin Feng immediately pursued with a deliberately slowed, inducive calmness, ”Go on... tell us in detail about the responsibility you believe you should assume throughout the incident, from beginning to end.”

Wang Can, grabbing the lifeline, leaned forward quickly, speaking in a hurried tone, ”I really didn’t mean to harm him! It was all in good spirit... I was particularly careful the entire time, he initially seemed perfectly fine! But who knew, once I... completed that step, he—he couldn’t do it anymore...”

”Be more specific.” Wan had already opened his notebook, pen in hand, his face unchanged as he added, ”Every step, detail, time, action, your thoughts—all need to be clearly stated.”

”This is an official record; we must record accurately, otherwise the data is useless, neither helpful to you nor for clarifying the truth.”

At this moment, Wang Can’s expression turned abruptly anxious, beads of sweat breaking out on his forehead, his hands unconsciously clenched.

He took a deep breath, his voice slightly trembling as he said, ”Alright... since things have reached this point, I’ll explain everything from the beginning.”

”That night, after we had dinner together, we originally planned to go out for a walk, get some air.”

”But just then, Li Yong suddenly started clasping his neck, saying it hurt severely, his complexion changed.”

”Seeing this, I remembered the time back home at the county Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, helping out, seeing many patients with neck discomfort, and learned some neck traction methods.”

”I then told him that this type of traction is especially effective for relieving cervical pressure and relaxing muscles. How about I take you to a hospital to have it done professionally?”

”However, he kept shaking his head, saying hospital expenses were too high, he had two sons yet to marry, money was needed everywhere, they must save when possible.”

Wang Can paused briefly before continuing, ”Seeing him in such pain, I felt anxious, proposing that perhaps we try it ourselves?”

”I previously saw a simple traction method at the hospital, just need a place, loop a rope around the neck, fix the other end high up, using body weight to gently pull open the cervical vertebrae, it should relieve it.”

”Li Yong seemed a bit hesitant but eventually nodded.”

”He told me that once before when his neck was uncomfortable at home, he used a similar method, draping a towel over the door frame and pulling it, feeling much relieved.”
