The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

minutes later, the vehicle arrived at the Jiangtan Construction Site.

As soon as the car came to a stop, Wan immediately dialed Wang Can’s number.

In less than five minutes, a middle-aged man wearing a hard hat and dressed in work clothes came out through the construction site gate.

However, when he looked up and saw the four people walking towards him, his expression visibly froze, and his steps hesitated: ”Huh? That’s odd... Didn’t you say on the phone that you were from the police station? I remember you being from the Criminal Investigation Team?”

Qin Feng and Wan exchanged smiles, then steadily walked forward.

Qin Feng spoke in a calm yet undeniable tone: ”We are indeed from the Criminal Investigation Team, we just borrowed a phone at the police station to contact you earlier.”

”Now we need you to come back with us to help us understand some situations.”

Wang Can was instantly stunned, ”Understand situations? But didn’t you say on the phone... it was just about the stolen steel pipes from the site?”

”I just asked the captain for a short leave, I need to get back to work.”

”Don’t worry about the leave, we’ll communicate with the site manager.”

Qin Feng’s voice remained steady, ”Right now, we need you to cooperate in an investigation regarding the case of your roommate Li Yong’s death.”

Upon hearing this, Wang Can’s brow furrowed instantly, his entire face seemed to freeze.

”What do you mean? Wasn’t it already confirmed that he died from a disease?”

”And didn’t the construction site already compensate? Wasn’t this matter resolved?”

”Oh? You seem to know quite a lot.”

Qin Feng leaned forward slightly, acting puzzled as he pursued further, ”Then tell us, how exactly did he die?”

”His heart... wasn’t it said to be coronary artery blockage?”

”The hospital diagnosed it as acute myocardial infarction, he stopped breathing right there.”

”At the time, I just happened to be going to the bathroom, came back and saw him lying there, motionless, that scene is still vividly clear to me.”

Qin Feng listened quietly, only speaking slowly after he finished: ”However, some things might need to be recalled slowly in the interrogation room.”

Before he finished speaking, he shot a glance at his colleague beside him.

Before Wang Can could argue again, four police officers swiftly moved forward, taking him away from the scene, and pushing him into a police vehicle parked by the roadside.

Half an hour later, Wang Can was brought to the district police station’s interrogation room.

Just upon entering, the glaring incandescent light made him squint his eyes, he shuffled uneasily, couldn’t help but speak: ”Mr. Qin, have you made a mistake?”

”Li Yong is indeed my roommate, but this matter has passed for so long, I’ve already said everything I had to say, bringing me here again today, what does it mean?”

”Don’t be nervous.” Qin Feng remained calm, ”We need a more detailed understanding of your friend Li Yong’s specific situation on that night.”

”What situation could there be? He died from a disease!” Wang Can almost blurted out, ”Didn’t the forensic department of the medical university already issue the death certificate? Clearly stating coronary artery sudden death, how could it be false?”

Qin Feng stared at him, not responding immediately.

He keenly captured every subtle change on Wang Can’s face.

From the initially feigned calm, to the fleeting panic in his pupils, to the barely noticeable twitch at the corner of his mouth...

Then, Qin Feng suddenly spoke: ”I advise you to adjust your attitude.”

”For now, let’s not consider what report the medical university issued, or what the previous conclusions were — those can be set aside temporarily.”

He leaned forward slightly, elbows resting on the edge of the table, speaking sternly: ”I will only ask you one key question — what exactly happened after you two left the shed that night?”

”You must explain that night from start to finish, without leaving any details out.”

”Every little detail, even if you think it’s insignificant, might affect the whole direction of the case.”

”Otherwise, based on the current clues and evidence chain, we can only list you as a primary suspect in this case according to the law.”

”Do you understand?”

”What? A suspect?!”

Wang Can’s face suddenly turned pale, as if that statement hit a nerve.

He instinctively shrank back, ”That night we just went out for a smoke, we really didn’t do anything!”

”I- I went to the bathroom in the middle, came back and noticed something wrong with him... that’s the whole process, it was really that simple!”

”Just that simple?” Qin Feng repeated his words.

After a long pause, Qin Feng spoke again, ”Then let me ask you one last time — what exactly happened between you two that night? Why did Li Yong die?”

His gaze suddenly became sharp, pressing down on the other like a solid weight, ”You must answer truthfully.”

Upon hearing this, Wang Can suddenly fell into deeper silence.

He lowered his head, his gaze wandering off on the ground, the sound of his breathing growing clearer and more rapid in the quiet room.

minutes later, he looked up, his gaze lingering back and forth between Qin Feng and the always silently recording Wan beside him.

After a long while, he finally spoke slowly, his voice dry, tinged with a trace of tentative inquiry: ”Officer... have you... found something already?”

.....

Meanwhile, at the entrance of the construction site.

Director Hou, Jiang An, Mr. Chen, and several scene investigators from the Criminal Investigation Team entered the area again.

The construction site still had bright yellow police tape drawn around it, which stood out starkly under the gloomy sky.

All the mechanical equipment — bulldozers, excavators, stacker — remained almost in the exact positions as in the initial photos from the incident.

Jiang An slowed his steps, his gaze scanning over the scene before him with the precision of a scanner.

A moment later, he turned to Mr. Chen and asked, ”Mr. Chen, after the incident, have these machines really remained untouched?”

Mr. Chen nodded, explaining, ”This construction site actually stopped completely due to funding issues just days after the incident, essentially in a ’half-finished’ state.”

”That’s exactly why the scene has been preserved intact.”

”These pieces of equipment, as fixed assets, have remained parked in their original places, no one has moved them.”

Jiang An listened quietly, while his mind played back the findings from the autopsy: The deceased died due to severe pulling on the neck area, resulting in spinal cord damage, which then triggered respiratory and circulatory failure.”

He silently pondered: The human neck is not easily subjected to such external force in normal environments — unless there was a hanging point high enough to create such mechanical conditions.

For a long while, his gaze uncontrollably moved upwards, observing every object around that might constitute a ”high place.”

Apart from a row of low temporary boards behind, the most prominent were the two bulldozers and a medium-sized excavator before him.

The height of the bulldozers was clearly insufficient, but the excavator was different — especially its high-raised mechanical arm.

Jiang An’s gaze lingered long on the rusty boom.

After quite a while, he turned to Mr. Chen and said, ”Mr. Chen, could you please arrange for a stepladder to be brought here?”

”I’d like to personally inspect the arm of that excavator.”

Mr. Chen, upon hearing this, froze for a moment, a hint of confusion crossing his face.

He turned to look at the excavator, hesitatingly replied, ”This excavator has been parked here since the day of the incident without moving, the tires and brake discs are all rusted, I suppose... there isn’t much need to check it again, is there?”

Jiang An shook his head, his gaze still locked on the high-hanging mechanical arm: ”I believe it is necessary.”

”Based on the current autopsy results, the pulling on the deceased’s neck needed to be achieved at a sufficiently high fixed point.”

”In the entire site environment, the top of the excavator’s arm is presently the only high suspension point that meets the conditions.”

”But no ropes or similar items were found at the scene...”

Mr. Chen stopped mid-sentence.

He looked at Jiang An’s determined expression, finally turning to instruct his team: ”Fetch a sturdy stepladder, let Mr. Jiang go up to take a closer look — be careful, take photos, and collect evidence.”
