Chapter 598: Chapter 335: First Review of the Original Case Files

After hanging up the phone, Jiang An quickly went downstairs.

At the entrance of the community gate, he saw from afar an elderly couple with graying hair, holding a child of about five or six years old, standing uneasily beside the security booth.

Under the scorching sun, the elderly couple’s bent backs looked particularly huddled.

Jiang An walked over quickly and said softly, ”Hello, I’m Jiang An.”

”Hello, Comrade Jiang An! It’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person.”

The old gentleman wearing gold-rimmed glasses shook Jiang An’s hand excitedly.

”We have been following your achievements for quite some time.”

Jiang An slightly opened his mouth, cautiously asking, ”Elder, who are you...?”

”Oh, we...”

The old gentleman pushed his glasses, his voice suddenly becoming somber, ”We came specifically today to see you because of our son’s case.”

He paused, then pulled out a newspaper from the cloth bag he carried.

”Recently, Jiangcheng held the ’Most Beautiful Police Officer’ selection event.”

”We carefully studied your personal profile, especially your speech at the news conference, which further convinced us that you are the one we need to find.”

Upon hearing this, Jiang An’s brows furrowed slightly, his heart filled with deeper doubts.

”Elder, may I ask what exactly you’re looking for me for?”

Before the words were finished, the elderly woman standing beside him suddenly covered her face, tears seeping through the gaps in her fingers.

”I can’t let go... I won’t rest in peace even in death...”

The old gentleman hurriedly lifted his hand and gently patted her back, ”Dear, now is not the time to grieve.”

”Let’s carefully explain the situation to Officer Jiang and see what his opinion is.”

Jiang An looked around, then turned to the security guard, ”Let them in, we’ll talk slowly in my office.”

The old gentleman quickly waved his hand, ”Mr. Jiang, it’s too much trouble for you, just speaking here at the gate is enough, so as not to delay your work.”

”Elder, please don’t be polite.”

Jiang An said firmly, ”We in the public security agency handle cases to serve the people.”

”Besides, it’s more appropriate for you two to sit and talk in the office since you’re also with a child.”

Arriving at the office, Jiang An poured a cup of tea for each person.

The elderly woman, with trembling hands, almost couldn’t hold the teacup steadily, the tea slightly swaying inside the cup.

Jiang An opened his notebook and said warmly, ”Grandpa, Grandma, please take your time and tell me in detail what you want to report.”

The elderly woman raised her tearful eyes to look at her partner, the old gentleman took a deep breath, then carefully took out a yellowed file from the cloth bag.

”Officer Jiang, this is what happened.”

”Three years ago, on a rainy night, our son was riding his motorcycle home when he suddenly died in an outlying fish pond.”

”It wasn’t until the next morning that a passerby discovered it...”

His voice choked for a moment, ”The police investigation concluded that he accidentally drowned after drinking alcohol, but we... don’t believe it!”

”At that time, did the autopsy report show alcohol in his system?”

Jiang An asked.

”There was alcohol.”

The old gentleman nodded, ”That day he indeed had drinks with some friends.”

”But we, as his parents, just can’t understand.”

”Our son had been riding a motorcycle for over ten years, his skills were excellent, he never had an accident.”

”Moreover...” His voice suddenly became agitated, ”We know his alcohol tolerance well; while he shouldn’t have driven after drinking, he certainly wasn’t so drunk that he’d lose consciousness!”

Jiang An carefully noted down, signaling him to continue speaking.

”Over the past three years, we’ve visited various departments.”

”From the district to the city, we even went to the provincial capital.”

”Every time we received the same response, saying it was an accidental incident and not opening a case.”

The elderly woman suddenly grabbed Jiang An’s hand, her bony fingers frighteningly cold, ”Officer Jiang, we believe there’s something wrong here.”

Jiang An gently patted the elderly woman’s hand, his heart already understanding their intention.

However, he didn’t immediately express his position, but cautiously asked, ”Elder, could you tell me your son’s name and ID number? I need to verify basic information first.”

The two elders nodded continuously, the old gentleman tremulously extracted a well-preserved copy of an identity card from his inner pocket.

”They are all prepared; here’s his information along with our home address.”

After carefully checking, Jiang An said, ”You two should go home first. Once I verify the situation, I will definitely respond to you at the earliest.”

The old gentleman stood up, tightly gripping Jiang An’s hand, his cloudy eyes shimmering with tears.

”Officer Jiang, we know you are different from others, sorry to trouble you!”

”Grandpa, you speak too highly.”

Jiang An quickly waved his hand, his tone sincere and warm, ”Investigating cases and upholding justice is indeed our duty.”

”As a forensic pathologist, I understand the importance of ’letting the deceased speak.’

”Rest assured, if there are indeed doubts about this case, I will apply to reopen the investigation.”

”However, I must also speak truthfully, if the investigation results show it truly was an accident, I hope you both can...”

Upon hearing this honest advice, the two elderly people opposite nodded forcefully, gratitude written all over their wrinkled faces.

Then, Jiang An escorted them to the stairway at the entrance of the public security bureau, watching the backs of the elderly couple and the child gradually disappear into the distance.

The bent backs of the elderly, the jumping footsteps of the child.

Watching this scene, Jiang An suddenly felt a surge of heartache.

Perhaps this is the most genuine trust of ordinary people.

In their hearts, ”If there’s trouble, find the police” has long become an instinctive response etched in their bones.

Jiang An quickly returned to the office, took the car keys, and drove the police car to the traffic police team.
