The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 588: Chapter 330: The Truth Revealed—A Bit Heartbreaking!

”That depends on your cooperation.”

Mr. Ma said coldly, crossing his arms over his chest.

Li Dong took a deep breath, his eyes becoming unfocused, as if lost in distant memories.

”Zhao Jian’s family... it was indeed me who killed them.”

His fingers unconsciously scratched the armrest of the interrogation chair, ”It’s all because I was fooled by greed... too greedy... I targeted his family because I knew they had money...”

At this point, he paused, his throat making a noticeable swallowing sound.

”Actually... Zhao Jian and I planned that cash transport robbery together.”

”At that time, surveillance wasn’t as extensive as it is now... We spent two whole months scouting, and finally decided to strike on that stretch of road on the outskirts where there were no cameras...”

Li Dong’s speech sped up, ”We used a hunting rifle to stop the cash transport, tied the driver and security guard in the woods... then drove to the riverside to split the spoils... each got a million...”

Suddenly, his expression twisted, his facial muscles spasming unnaturally: ”But me, this gambling addict... lost all the money in less than half a year!”

”On that trip to the Macau casino, I even had to borrow money from a friend for the return ticket...”

Li Dong’s fist pounded heavily on his thigh, making a dull thud, ”I asked Zhao Jian to lend me money, and that bastard kept making excuses!”

”Claimed he didn’t dare to touch the money... it was clear he just didn’t want to lend it to me!”

The air in the interrogation room seemed to have frozen.

Li Dong’s gaze gradually became maniacal, his pupils contracting wildly.

”That night, I took a fruit knife to confront him... at first, he pretended to welcome me... then he just blatantly turned on me!”

”We wrestled... I pulled out the knife and stabbed wildly... When I came to my senses, he was already... already...”

”Go on...”

Mr. Ma ordered harshly, his fingers drumming heavily on the table.

”His wife heard the commotion and came out... I didn’t even plan to kill her...”

He suddenly looked up, a grim expression on his face, ”That bitch! I forced her to tell me where the money was, and she pretended to be clueless!”

”Even with the kid in my hands, she wouldn’t say! She even bit off a piece of my lip!”

Mr. Ma abruptly interrupted his recounting, his voice cold as iron: ”How long did you search the scene?”

”At least two hours!”

Li Dong shouted excitedly, his voice hoarse and terrifying, ”I turned that shabby house upside down! The wardrobe, under the bed, the floor... even opened up the toilet tank to check!”

His speech quickened, ”Then it dawned on me... maybe the money really wasn’t at the house...”

Instantly, a weird smile crept onto his lips, ”So, I focused on Liu Tie... that excavator driver who looked a lot like me...”

”I used his identity to search for three whole years... but that sum of money seemed to have vanished into thin air...”

At this point, Li Dong suddenly let out an eerie laugh, a sound that pierced the silence of the interrogation room.

”Do you know what’s most ironic?”

”I’ve been impersonating Liu Tie all these years... and I actually lived more like a person than he ever did when he was alive...”

His laughter abruptly ceased, his gaze suddenly becoming hollow.

”I lived in his house, drove his car.”

Upon hearing this, Mr. Wang and Mr. Ma exchanged glances, each seeing confirmation in the other’s eyes.

His confession matched perfectly with what had been carefully deduced through earlier investigations, finally putting their minds at ease.

Mr. Ma leaned forward slightly, his voice low and authoritative as he pressed, ”Are you sure you buried Liu Tie’s body under the pier near his workplace?”

”Do you still remember the exact location?”

”Liu Tie...”

The suspect hung his head, his voice carrying a hint of remorse, ”His body is indeed buried under the pier near San Bridge.”

”That night, I operated the excavator and put him there...”

At this point, his voice noticeably trembled, ”I really didn’t want it to come to this.”

”We used to get along pretty well, but that day I urgently needed to use the excavator, and not only did he refuse, but he also demanded money up front.”

”I even offered to give him 300,000 after we found the item, but he still wouldn’t agree. In desperation, I...”

”Which specific pier?”

Mr. Wang asked directly.

”Under the second pier of San Bridge in Chuanyang City.”

Li Dong lifted his head, his gaze flickering, ”I remember it clearly because there’s a prominent crack there...”

In the monitoring room, everyone’s faces lit up with excitement.

Zhang Yean was so animated she nearly jumped up, patting Jiang An’s shoulder as she exclaimed, ”Mr. Jiang, you’re a genius!”

”Your deduction was spot on! This is textbook case-solving!”

”Indeed!”

Li Jian also swept away his earlier fatigue and enthusiastically agreed.

”Solving this long-standing case in such a short time is a major breakthrough for our detective team.”

”Remember, the provincial leaders assigned this just under 24 hours ago, and we’ve already found a breakthrough.”

”This efficiency is sure to set a standard for the entire province’s criminal investigation system!”

”Amazing! This deserves recognition for the task force!”

Other officers also praised in unison.

Just then, Li Jian’s phone suddenly rang, the caller ID showed it was Mr. Ma.

”Hello, Mr. Ma...”

Li Jian answered the call.

”The case has made significant progress, but we still need to conduct final on-site evidence collection, and you might need to coordinate.”

”Mr. Ma, just tell me what needs to be done.”

Mr. Ma said in a steady voice, ”Please organize personnel to immediately head to the second pier at San Bridge in Chuanyang City to excavate and collect evidence from the burial site.”

”Go now?”

”Yes, there’s no time to lose.”

After hanging up the phone, Li Jian looked around: ”Mr. Jiang, Zhang Yean, Wan, do you want to come to the site too?”

Zhang Yean nodded without hesitation: ”Of course, this is crucial evidence.”

Jiang An also responded immediately: ”I also want to confirm it there in person.”

The night was as black as ink, as the police car sped down the highway.

Wan gripped the steering wheel tightly, focused entirely on driving.

Though all four in the car were exhausted, they were filled with a vigor as if pulled by an invisible force, heading straight for the pier where the final piece of evidence lay buried.

Everyone knew that only by finding the body could this case be brought to a satisfactory conclusion.

After a four-hour journey, they finally arrived in Chuanyang City at dawn.

The newly risen sun cast a golden glow over the small town.

Following the clue provided by the suspect Li Dong, they quickly found the San Bridge.

The soil beneath the bridge was covered with signs of construction, with a dirt mound beside one pier standing noticeably higher than elsewhere, and the surrounding weeds were sparser compared to other areas.

Li Jian squatted down, carefully examining the ground markings.

”This should be it.”

He pointed to the slightly raised mound, ”We need to start digging immediately.”

”Dig now? With our hands?”

Wan asked in confusion.

”Of course not.” Jiang An smiled.

Then discussed with the others, ”Should we bring in an excavator?”

”There might not be time!” Li Jian glanced at his watch, ”Let’s proceed manually.”

Just as he finished speaking, Li Jian immediately pulled out his phone and contacted the local police station.

In less than half an hour, 15 police officers arrived at the site with shovels and other tools.

The station’s director, Wang Yong, approached briskly and said warmly, ”Mr. Li, long time no see, my apologies for not welcoming you earlier.”

Li Jian responded with a smile: ”Mr. Wang, you’re too kind, thanks for your help this time!”

Wang Yong laughed and said, ”Come to think of it, I learned from you during my internship back then.”

”The case-handling experience you taught me is still immensely useful to this day.”

Li Jian waved his hand, ”It’s your achievements now that bring honor to me as your former teacher.”

At exactly 8 o’clock in the morning, under the rising sun, 15 strong officers sweated profusely as they dug beneath the pier.

Li Jian, Jiang An, Zhang Yean, and Wan stood by, closely monitoring the progress of the excavation.
