The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 566: Chapter 320: Find the Crack and Let the Light of Justice Shine In

After a long silence, Zhang Yean rubbed the coffee cup in her hand.

She slowly spoke, ”I have indeed heard about that case; it’s been many years now.”

”At the time, it made quite a stir, and the provincial department even set up a special task force for the ’12·15 Major Armored Car Robbery’, assembling the top criminal investigation experts from the entire province.”

”I remember clearly, there was a total of 2 million in cash in that armored car, all in consecutively numbered new bills.”

”After the incident, with the help of Interpol, only 1 million was recovered; the other half seemed to have vanished into thin air.”

”Was the source of the funds found?” Jiang An couldn’t help but interject.

Zhang Yean shook her head with a bitter smile, a hint of helplessness crossed her brows.

”No! The funds were discovered in a few underground casinos in Hong Kong.”

”Those funds changed hands multiple times and were laundered completely clean.”

”You know, cases involving cross-border money laundering are particularly tricky to investigate.”

”Once the illicit funds enter casinos, these special venues, after being transferred hands and exchanged multiple times, tracking the source is as hard as climbing to the sky.”

Then, Zhang Yean added thoughtfully, ”The strangest thing is, the other 1 million seems like it was enchanted—it’s never appeared in the market for over a decade.”

”Later, I talked about this case with some old colleagues and everyone found it perplexing.”

Jiang An frowned, absentmindedly rubbing his chin, ”That doesn’t make sense.”

”Wasn’t the robbery all about money?”

”Why would they not spend it after getting their hands on it?”

”Even if they didn’t dare to use it immediately back then, after three or five years, it should have gradually entered the market.”

Suddenly, Jiang An froze.

A bold idea gradually took shape in his mind.

If these two seemingly unrelated cases were linked, then could the mysteriously missing other 1 million from back then be because...

Thinking of this, he couldn’t help but take a deep breath.

”I have a hypothesis,” Jiang An’s voice tightened, ”The reason that million never circulated is because...”

He paused, ”Because the one who got it is no longer alive?”

”Maybe that box of money is still hidden in some unknown corner.”

Upon hearing this, Zhang Yean abruptly looked up, a hint of surprise in her eyes.

She pondered for a moment and slowly nodded, ”This idea, though bold, indeed provides a new direction.”

”The 1 million back then was no small amount.”

”At the housing prices then, it was enough to buy ten apartments in the city center.”

Jiang An took a sip of the already slightly cool coffee; the liquid glimmered amber under the light.

”The key is to find where that money might be hidden.”

Zhang Yean flipped open the case files, staring at the yellowing photos.

”After the incident, the police conducted a carpet search, almost turning over the ground, but found nothing.”

”Could the money really have been moved?”

”I don’t think so!” Jiang An shook his head, his eyes shining with thought.

”If the money was really taken away, there wouldn’t be any digging marks near the crime scene then.”

”And also, according to currency circulation records, there’s no evidence that the money was ever used.”

”You’re right!”

Zhang Yean suddenly slapped the table, ”The money is likely still somewhere!”

They exchanged glances, seeing certainty in each other’s eyes.

Jiang An stood up, stretching his somewhat stiff shoulders.

”Tomorrow, I’ll apply to Mr. Li to re-examine the crime scene.”

”This time, we need to change our approach and focus on potential hiding spots for the money.”

”Count me in,” Zhang Yean also stood up, a long-lost excitement appearing on her face.

”How can a treasure hunt leave me out?”

”No problem, we’ll meet at the bureau tomorrow morning.”

Jiang An replied with a smile. Zhang Yean glanced at her watch; the hour hand was already pointing to eleven.

”It’s late, see you tomorrow.”

After saying goodbye, Jiang An sat alone in the empty office, fingers lightly tapping the table.

The moonlight outside was like water, stars scattered across the sky.

The city’s lights gradually extinguished, leaving only a few scattered street lamps standing guard in the darkness.

He was engaged in a deep dialogue with himself, repeatedly pondering a key question.

If I were him, where would I hide that huge sum?

That enormous wealth, enough to make someone risk everything, where would be the safest, most unexpected hiding place?

......

Early the next morning, just as the clock struck seven, the entire office building was still immersed in the weekend’s tranquility.

Jiang An had already risen from the makeshift bed in the duty room, washed his face with cold water, and instantly cleared his muddled mind.

The aroma of buns and soy milk wafted from the cafeteria. He quickly had a few bites and then hurried toward Detective Captain Li Jian’s office.

His urgent footsteps echoed in the empty corridor, sounding particularly clear.

Li Jian was holding a freshly boiled kettle about to make tea.

Seeing Jiang An’s figure appear at the doorway, he was momentarily taken aback, then gave a wry smile, ”You’re early again.”

Jiang An’s eyes crinkled with a few lines, ”Been thinking too much about the case these days, so I simply slept in the duty room.”

Upon hearing this, Li Jian frowned, putting down the teapot, and said earnestly, ”You’re now a leader in the criminal investigation team.”

”You can’t continue living a bachelor lifestyle, day in and day out.”

He poured a cup of hot tea and pushed it toward Jiang An, ”Once this case is solved, I must introduce you to someone.”

”Starting a family is a life stage every man has to experience; you should consider it.”
