Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1508: Chapter 1508: Dare Not, Cannot.

”Sure,” Guan Qing smiled, ”Brother Zhiyuan and Sister-in-Law, don’t forget to grace us with your presence.”

Ma Mei, upon hearing what the Army Commander said, realized she had misunderstood and hastily apologized to Guan Qing, ”Guan Qing, I’m really sorry. You see, your sister-in-law here, though grown-up, hasn’t developed any skills except for being a little paranoid. Don’t be like your sister-in-law.”

”Look at what you’re saying,” Guan Qing apologized with a guilty face, ”I’m also at fault. I was too excited, kind of got carried away. I’ll pay more attention in the future! I apologize to you, sister-in-law.”

”It’s my fault. All my fault!” Ma Mei felt that she had wronged Guan Qing and felt very guilty.

”Enough,” Hen Zhiyuan, with a throbbing headache, said, ”Nobody blames you two, this was simply a misunderstanding. Now that it has been resolved, let’s consider the matter closed.”

”You made your sister-in-law unhappy. You have to behave yourself tonight and drink a few more glasses to your sister-in-law’s health later,” the Army Commander told Guan Qing.

”I understand, Dad. Don’t worry, as the host, I’ll make sure to treat Sister-in-Law well,” Guan Qing laughed.

During dinner, Guan Qing indeed kept filling and drinking glass after glass with Ma Mei.

Guan Qing, as a businesswoman often negotiating deals and drinking with clients, had long ago developed a high tolerance for alcohol.

But Ma Mei was far from her league.

She had intended to drink just a few glasses and be done with it, but with Guan Qing continuously offering more, and given her own need to ask for favors, she felt embarrassed to refuse Guan Qing’s hospitality.

Thus, she drank down each glass that Guan Qing offered.

It wasn’t long before she became completely drunk and slumped over the table, unable to be roused no matter how loud they called her.

”It’s really embarrassing for the Commander and Guan Qing,” Hen Zhiyuan awkwardly looked at his wife’s sloppy state, ”She never drinks this much. She probably drank too much today because she was too happy, so...”

”It’s no problem. I’ll take Sister-in-Law home later. You and Dad can drink a little more,” Guan Qing said.

Seeing that it was getting late, the Army Commander said to Guan Qing, ”Okay, that’s enough drinking, drinking too much isn’t good for the body.”

”The Commander is right. Let’s eat something. After dinner, I’ll take her home.”

”That’s good.”

After dinner, Guan Qing began making arrangements to send Ma Mei home.

Hen Zhiyuan, steadying her, wobbled home step by step.

Guan Qing silently watched the couple with a sour feeling in her heart, feeling somewhat uncomfortable.

”Zhiyuan,” Guan Qing suddenly stopped, stood there, and silently looked at him without saying a word.

”What do you want to say?” Hen Zhiyuan also stopped and looked at Guan Qing.

Under the dim streetlights, her eyes revealed traces of deep resentment and frustration.

”What’s wrong?” Hen Zhiyuan’s heart fluttered a bit at the sight of Guan Qing’s touching appearance.

He knew what Guan Qing wanted, but that was an affection he dared not reciprocate.

”How is it that after such a long time, you don’t miss me?”

Hen Zhiyuan looked at her for a few seconds and said, ”What does it matter if I miss you, and what can I do if I don’t? Qingqing, you know my situation better than anyone.”

”So, is it that you can’t bear to leave her, or is it that you don’t dare to let her go?” This time, Guan Qing asked him directly and sharply.

”I dare not, and I cannot,” Hen Zhiyuan had his own difficulties; he knew all too well that it’s not easy to walk away from a military marriage as one pleases.
