Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1505: Chapter 1505: Utilizing Connections

”We should not delay in searching for those people,” An Hao said, the scratched-out address on the letter raising too many questions. The sooner they started, the better.

To avoid any unexpected complications, she couldn’t handle any more setbacks.

”Okay.”

The uncertainties in this matter caused An Hao a great deal of unease. For the sake of caution, she suggested it be carried out in secret.

And so, Zhang Jianguo ordered a reconnaissance company to be pulled out of the ranks. They shed their military uniforms, dressed in plain clothes, and quietly slipped into Dongshan Village to investigate the whereabouts of Qin Jian and Tian Niu.

Aside from the Commander and the division head, no one else knew about this.

He Zhiyuan had won the second-class personal merit award. When he returned and told Ma Mei about this, she was overjoyed, her face blooming like flowers.

”Do you think you have a chance of being promoted to regimental commander this time?” Ma Mei’s career had now been destroyed, so she placed all her hopes on her husband, He Zhiyuan.

”It’s hard to say,” He Zhiyuan was a bit worried that An Hao might ruin things, ”Qin Jian’s little wife is not a simple one. Her words today at the commendation ceremony really caught me off guard.”

”She may be young, but she’s shrewd. Just look at those eyes, seductive and bewitching, they’ve hooked the hearts of men. Look at how utterly devoted Yan Ye is to her. It just makes my blood boil.”

Her own Ruan Fangfang had fallen at her hands, and her full career was also destroyed by her—it was enough to make Ma Mei’s teeth itch with hate.

”Now she’s starting to suspect me,” He Zhiyuan said with a headache.

”It’s just suspicion, what are you afraid of? Without evidence, she can only guess,” Ma Mei tried to comfort her husband.

”You can’t underestimate her,” He Zhiyuan still vividly remembered the look An Hao had given him.

Sharp, cold, with a bone-chilling chill. What was more frightening was that she seemed to see right through him.

And knew exactly how to break down his defenses.

Her calm and collected demeanor actually made him nervous.

”I know.” Ma Mei had underestimated her before, but now she dared not, ”This is a rare opportunity. If you don’t get promoted this time, what’s waiting for you might really be a transfer to another position.”

Now that she had nothing left, she could only rely on her husband.

”I’m even more concerned about this than you are,” He Zhiyuan said impatiently, ”Enough about that, now go make me a couple of dishes. Let’s drink a few cups tonight.”

Although his wish had not yet been fulfilled, at least he had taken a significant step forward.

”A couple of cups is fine. But, you have to decide who you’re drinking with,” Ma Mei said before turning to the kitchen cabinet to retrieve two bottles of fine wine and handed them to He Zhiyuan, ”Go find Commander Guan.”

”You mean...”

”Are you stupid? If you bring up the issue this time, Commander Guan won’t neglect it, right? Connections must be used. You’re a soldier he brought up; if you become a regimental commander, it gives him face too.”

”You’re right. I’ll go find the commander right now,” He Zhiyuan said and proceeded to leave.

”Wait. I’ll come with you,” Ma Mei also wanted to seize the chance to get closer.

She wondered if her own future work issues could be resolved?

If so, it would be killing two birds with one stone.

When He Zhiyuan heard Ma Mei wanted to come along, he hesitated: ”I think you better not. I’ll just go and chat with the commander myself.”
