Sweet Nostalgia of the 80s

Chapter 1200: Chapter 1200: Racing Against Time to Save Lives

An Hao casually pulled up a stool and sat down, listening to Ji Chuan continue the meeting.

”A residential building just collapsed in the eastern part of the city, resulting in severe casualties. Our hospital’s ambulances have already been dispatched, and we anticipate that the first group of victims will arrive in twenty minutes. According to preliminary estimates from the scene, the number of casualties is not small. Today, we must be prepared to fight a tough battle, racing against time to snatch lives from the jaws of death. Everyone, return to your posts now and quickly prepare. Once our operating rooms are open, we estimate they’ll be running non-stop all day.” After Ji Chuan finished speaking, he clapped his hands, ”Disperse, everyone, and take your positions.”

The duty doctors all went about their business, but An Hao and Lei Linxuan stayed behind, waiting for Ji Chuan’s orders.

”Can you handle it?” Ji Chuan approached An Hao and asked.

”I’m fine.” After yesterday’s rest, An Hao was in good spirits, ready to stand at the operating table and fight alongside everyone else today.

”That’s good to hear. The two of you, follow me. If I can’t hold up during today’s surgeries, I’ll need your help.”

”Understood. We will follow Director Ji’s command,” said An Hao.

”Me too.” Lei Linxuan was now also capable of performing operations like cutting and suturing, thanks to Ji Chuan’s training over this period. Though his skills were limited, he was still useful.

”Let’s go.” Ji Chuan waved his hand, and An Hao and Lei Linxuan followed him.

Twenty minutes later, the hospital turned into something akin to hell on Earth, as a large influx of victims arrived, and the emergency room was as busy as a battlefield. The painful moans of patients, the cries of their family members, and the anxious voices of doctors and nurses all interwove.

”These two patients have leg fractures. Call orthopedics to come and take them.”

”The patient has three broken ribs, rapid, shallow breathing, cyanosis, and uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth and nose. An abdominal exploration is needed to check for internal bleeding. Administer oxygen quickly and send to General Surgery...”

”A pregnant woman in her ninth month has an open wound on her leg and severe heart rate irregularities, with a weakening fetal heartbeat. Please have the OB/GYN and cardiothoracic surgery doctors come down for a consultation and quickly determine the surgical plan.”

After initially treating the victims, the emergency department let those with minor injuries stay for observation and sent those with serious injuries to the respective departments.

Following the accident, no department was busier than General Surgery.

The three operating rooms ran in turn, but even this was not enough, and eventually, operating rooms from other departments were also used.

Ji Chuan performed one surgery after another without pause, and as soon as one batch of victims was dealt with, another arrived. He stood for a full twelve hours straight, and it was now midnight.

An Hao had also been in the operating room the entire time, without stepping out even once.

It wasn’t until the last surgery was completed and she stepped out that An Hao felt her entire body soaked through, with sweat rolling down her forehead.

Ji Chuan moved his stiff neck and spine, and only then did he remember that no one had eaten all day.

”Let’s go! Let’s eat first. And stop by the nurse’s station to ask if more victims are still being brought in.”

The staff from operating room one all came out, while surgeries in the other two rooms were still in progress.

Lei Linxuan went straight to the nurse’s station to call the emergency department downstairs. They said that there would be one more batch of victims arriving in half an hour, the last batch.

Ji Chuan nodded, raised his hand, and said to everyone, ”Go! Let’s all eat first. Just hold on a little longer. Once this busy period is over, I’ll arrange for everyone to have days off to rest properly for a couple of days.”
