Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 138: Chapter 138 — Measured

The testing room was smaller than Corwin’s classroom, bare except for a low table holding a device Arlen didn’t recognize — a crystalline lattice mounted on a simple stand, faceted surfaces catching the room’s dim light.

”Halbrecht’s design, or close enough to it,” Corwin said, noting Arlen’s attention. ”Measures ambient output. Standard tool for this kind of assessment, wherever you’re trained.” He gestured toward a marked circle on the floor. ”Stand there. We’ll start simple.”

Arlen settled into the circle, and found the process considerably more familiar than he’d expected — sustained output first, Corwin watching the crystal’s response with flat, professional attention while Arlen held Enduring Vitality’s steady warmth at a consistent level for what felt like several minutes.

”Reading’s stable,” Corwin said, making a note. ”Now taper it. Slow, controlled steps down, not a sudden cutoff.”

Arlen did, and found the graduated control easier than it might have been a year ago — the same discipline Garrett had drilled into him session after grinding session, translated now into something this crystal apparently found meaningful.

”Good,” Corwin said, marking something else down. ”Now I want to check for a second signature. Most Awakened only carry one. Hold still.”

He adjusted a small dial along the crystal’s base, and the faceted light shifted, briefly, from a steady amber to something with a faint blue undertone threaded through it.

”Huh,” Corwin said, unhurried, unbothered. ”You’ve got both. Aura reading’s the stronger of the two, but there’s a genuine Mana signature underneath it — faint, but real.” He glanced up. ”Dual-Affinity. Rare enough that most people carrying it know to say so before I ever have to check. Nobody flagged that on your transfer.”

”I didn’t know it had a proper name,” Arlen said, which was, in its own careful way, true enough. ”I’ve always assumed I was simply an Aura user who picked up a few odd habits along the way.”

”Apparently you’re rather more than that.” Corwin didn’t seem especially struck by the discovery, filing it away with the same flat efficiency he brought to everything else. ”Doesn’t change today’s assessment much either way. Full output, held as long as you can manage. I want to see where it actually breaks.”

Arlen let it build properly this time, the warmth spreading fuller through his chest and limbs than he typically allowed in ordinary practice, and held it — a minute, then two, then longer, until Corwin finally raised a hand.

”Enough. That’s well past what I needed to see.” He set down his notes. ”Peak Awakened. Solid, stable, right at the edge of what the stage can hold. Which tells me your foundation’s sound enough — you’re not stuck here because you lack the capacity to move past it.”

”Then why am I stuck?”

”Because nobody ever taught you how to actually do it.” Corwin said it plainly, without any particular weight behind the observation. ”Happens more than you’d think, with frontier-trained adventurers. You can spend years building a strong Peak foundation through good technique alone, and never once attempt the actual breakthrough, because nobody explained there was a specific step waiting past it.”

”What is the step?”

”Forming the proper vessel for what you’re carrying.” Corwin gestured vaguely at Arlen’s chest. ”Aura Heart, for the Aura side. Mana Core, for the Mana side, in your case — though given how much fainter that signature reads, it may lag behind considerably. Right now you’re holding your power loosely, the way most Awakened do. A Novice’s power has a proper seat to settle into. That’s not something that happens by accident. It requires understanding your own energy well enough to shape it deliberately, not just channel it.”

”How do I get that understanding?”

”Differently for everyone. Some people find it through prolonged meditation on their own technique. Some find it mid-fight, forced into clarity by genuine danger. Some simply need it explained properly, once, by someone who already knows the shape of it, and the rest follows on its own.” Corwin shrugged, unconcerned. ”I can’t hand it to you directly. What I can do is make sure you understand what you’re actually looking for, so you’re not walking around for another year and more not knowing there was ever a door to find.”

He spent the next several minutes doing exactly that — plain, practical instruction, nothing dramatic, describing the internal sensation of a properly seated Aura Heart the way a smith might describe the feel of correctly tempered steel, something Arlen could recognize once he felt it rather than something Corwin could simply install in him.

”That’s the whole of it,” Corwin said, finally setting the crystal device aside. ”Practice holding your output the way I just described, rather than simply releasing it the way you’ve been. Do that consistently, and the breakthrough tends to find its own moment. Could be days. Could be longer. I’ve seen it happen both ways.”

”Thank you,” Arlen said. ”For actually explaining it, I mean. Nobody back home ever thought to.”

”Not your instructor’s fault, most likely. Different priorities, different terrain.” Corwin gathered his things, the assessment plainly concluded. ”You’ll want to keep working with whatever cohort you’re assigned for the rest of orientation — I’ve a full roster of students this month, same as every month, and I won’t have time to walk you through this individually again. What I’ve told you today is what I tell everyone in your position. Practice it properly, and you won’t need me a second time.”

”Understood.”

”One more thing, since we’re on it — same rule Ferrin’s likely already given you about skills applies here too, just so you’re not caught off guard hearing it twice from two different instructors.” Corwin paused at the door. ”Don’t go comparing notes on exactly where you stand with every other adventurer you meet. Realm, stage, technique, all of it — people hold that close down here, same as their full skill list. Nobody owes anybody a complete accounting of themselves. Goes for you as much as anyone.”

He left without further ceremony, and Arlen stood alone in the small testing room a while longer, the crystalline device dark and quiet now on its stand, turning over everything the last hour had given him — a name, finally, for the shape of power he’d spent two years building without knowing its proper name, and a plain, unglamorous set of instructions for finding the rest of it himself.
