Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 132: Chapter 132 — Aurenholt

The traffic told him before the walls did.

By the sixth day past the highway junction, the road had swollen into something Arlen could barely call a road anymore — three, sometimes four lanes of wagons and riders and foot traffic, and not all of it moving the same direction. For every merchant train pressing steadily toward the capital, another rolled the opposite way, empty-bedded and lighter now that its goods had already changed hands somewhere behind him; for every wide-eyed traveler he passed heading in, a courier or a returning soldier passed him heading out, already familiar enough with the road to move through the crush without slowing. It was less a road anymore than two rivers running parallel, one flowing toward the city and one flowing away from it, and Arlen let the inbound current carry him along the way a leaf gets carried along water too wide and too fast to fight.

He saw the walls on the eighth day.

They rose out of the haze the way mountains did — gradually, then all at once, pale stone stretching so far in either direction that Arlen genuinely couldn’t see where they ended, watchtowers spaced along their length at intervals too regular and too frequent to count from this distance. Marrowgate’s walls, which had seemed enormous a month earlier, would have fit inside these several times over.

Day fifty-nine, he thought, the number arriving almost as an afterthought against the sheer scale of what stood in front of him. Nearly there. Nearly, finally, there.

The gate itself, when he finally reached it, was less a single structure and more a small fortress in its own right — three separate archways side by side, each wide enough for heavy wagon traffic, funneling the road’s swollen current into three still-substantial rivers rather than one impossible flood. Even divided three ways, the line moved with agonizing slowness, guards working through papers and cargo manifests and the occasional dispute with the same brisk, unhurried thoroughness Arlen remembered from Marrowgate, except multiplied across what looked like dozens of officials rather than a handful.

He fell into the queue behind a merchant train hauling something that smelled sharply of exotic spice, and settled in for what he suspected would be a considerable wait.

It was. The afternoon light had shifted well toward gold by the time he’d advanced even halfway toward the archway itself, and Arlen found himself, standing in a line that barely seemed to move, listening to the layered conversations around him with the same careful attention he’d given every crowd since Ashford’s Crossing.

The line moved in both directions at once here too, one queue funneling in through each archway, another moving out, travelers and merchants and the occasional courier riding hard in the opposite direction, back out toward whatever corner of the kingdom they’d come from. This was only one gate among several, he understood, studying the wall’s long curve away in either direction — a city this size would need entrances on every side, north and south and west as well as the northeast approach his own road had carried him toward. He wondered, briefly, what waited at the others, what different accents and different roads fed into each one, before the thought dissolved back into the simple business of waiting his turn.

The accents alone told him more than he’d expected. A cluster of merchants ahead of him spoke with the clipped, efficient cadence of the capital’s own trade district, comparing notes on some upcoming auction. Behind him, two travelers argued good-naturedly in an accent he didn’t recognize at all, something rounder and softer than anything he’d heard even in Marrowgate, and when he caught a fragment of their conversation mentioning a kingdom two names removed from anything in his own limited geography, he understood, properly, for the first time, exactly how far this city’s pull actually reached.

”First time?” asked a woman near him in line, noting his open, unhurried study of everything around him.

”That obvious?”

”Everyone does it, the first time. Try not to gawk too long once you’re actually inside — slows down everyone behind you.” She said it without real unkindness, the weary affection of someone who’d clearly made this crossing more times than she cared to count. ”What brings you in? Trade, or the Depths?”

”Adventurer,” Arlen said. ”Guild business. Not trade.”

”Ah. Fair number of you come through this gate specifically, then — trade district’s mostly served by the southern approach, from what I understand.” She nodded toward the gate ahead, still a considerable distance off. ”You’ll see soon enough. Whole districts built just to serve people passing through on their way to or from the Depths.”

Arlen turned that over as the line inched forward, filing it away alongside everything else he’d absorbed since Kess had first mentioned the Sundered Depths back in Greyhaven, months and a whole journey ago now — the strange, growing sense that the dungeon beneath this city was less a single feature of it and more the gravitational center the entire place had organized itself around.

He finally passed beneath the archway as the light began properly fading toward evening, guards checking his guild badge with the same brisk efficiency he’d encountered everywhere along this final stretch, waving him through without further comment once his papers proved unremarkable.

And then he was inside, and the city opened up around him, and Arlen stopped walking entirely, the crowd behind him grumbling and flowing around his stillness the way water flows around a rock, because there was simply no way to keep moving through what he was seeing without pausing first to actually take it in.

Aurenholt did not simply dwarf everything he’d seen before it. It made everything he’d seen before it feel like careful, modest sketches for a painting he was only now viewing in its true, finished scale. Buildings rose five and six stories in places, their upper floors catching the last gold light of evening, streets branching away in every direction with a complexity that made Marrowgate’s winding lanes look almost straightforward by comparison. The noise alone was staggering — market cries and temple bells and a hundred overlapping conversations in a dozen different languages, threaded through with the deeper, more distant hum of a city large enough to have its own weather system of sound.

He caught glimpses, even in that first overwhelmed moment, of variety beyond anything Marrowgate had shown him — a party of adventurers passing close by whose armor bore the unmistakable scoring and wear of genuine deep expeditions, a noble’s carriage drawn by matched horses more finely bred than anything he’d seen outside a guild bestiary’s description of exotic imports, a street performer drawing a real crowd with some kind of illusion magic that made the evening air itself ripple with soft, colored light.

I don’t even know where to start, he thought, and found the thought carried none of the anxious uncertainty it might have a year earlier — only genuine, overwhelmed wonder, the exact feeling he’d promised himself, dying in another life entirely, that he would someday properly earn.

He didn’t try to see it all that first evening. The light was fading fast now, and exhaustion — the honest, accumulated exhaustion of eight days pressing hard along the capital’s traffic-choked approach — had finally caught up with him now that the destination itself no longer needed chasing.

He found lodging without much difficulty in the district nearest the gate, a modest but clean inn clearly built to handle exactly this kind of overwhelmed, road-worn traveler. The price, when the innkeeper named it, made him pause — nearly double what a comparable room had cost him even in Marrowgate.

”Everything runs dearer this close to the Depths,” the innkeeper said, not unkindly, noting his brief hesitation. ”Rent, bread, boots, all of it. Capital prices. You’ll get used to budgeting for it, if you’re staying any length of time.” He slid a room key across the counter. ”Guild district’s a fair walk from here, mind. You’ll want a full day and a clear head for that, not whatever’s left of you tonight.”

”Tomorrow, then,” Arlen said, and paid without further complaint, understanding well enough by now that this was simply the cost of finally standing inside the place he’d spent fifty-nine days walking toward.

He climbed the narrow stairs to his room, set his pack down for what felt like the first time in weeks without immediately needing to pick it back up again, and stood for a long moment at the room’s single window, looking out over a city he’d spent this entire remarkable journey walking toward — lit now by scattered lantern-light and the last violet traces of evening, vast and layered and entirely, finally, real.

Fifty-nine days. Fifty-nine days since Greyhaven’s western gate, and here, at last, was the horizon he’d been walking toward the whole time.

Tomorrow, he would find the guild. Tonight, he simply let himself rest, in the heart of the city he had finally, properly, arrived in.
