Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 126: Chapter 126 — The Last Village

He didn’t remember the last mile of the walk clearly. There was the road, pale and rutted in the fading light, and there were his own boots moving over it, and somewhere between one step and the next the trees had thinned into fenced pasture and the pasture had given way to the first rooftops of a village he hadn’t yet learned the name of.

A woman hanging washing near the road’s edge looked up at him and went very still.

”You look like you’ve walked through something,” she said, not unkindly.

”Something like that,” Arlen managed.

She didn’t ask further, which he was grateful for, and pointed him toward a modest inn near the village’s small central well — the only inn, from the look of the place, a low stone building with warm light spilling from its windows into the early evening. He crossed the threshold on legs that had stopped fully obeying him some hours back, and the innkeeper, an older man with a weathered, unhurried face, took one look at him and didn’t bother with the usual pleasantries.

”Private room,” the man said, already reaching for a key. ”You’ll want the door that actually locks, state you’re in.”

”I can pay for a bunk,” Arlen said, some old, careful habit still insisting on the arithmetic even now.

”You can pay for the room. Looks to me like you’ll sleep either way, but I’d rather you slept somewhere I don’t have four other travelers stepping over you by morning.” The innkeeper studied him a moment longer, something almost paternal in the assessment. ”Rough road?”

”Rough few days.” Arlen didn’t have anything left in him for more detail than that.

He paid — six copper, cheap enough that even his exhausted mind registered the fairness of it — and let himself be led up a narrow flight of stairs to a small, plain room with a real bed, a real door, and a window that looked out over the village’s quiet evening rooftops. He set his pack down, sat on the edge of the bed to pull off his boots, and was asleep before he’d managed the second one.

He slept through the night entirely, and most of the following morning besides, waking sometime past midday to sunlight slanting warm across the floorboards and a body that ached in the deep, thorough way of someone who has finally stopped running long enough to feel everything the running had cost.

He lay there a while simply breathing, cataloguing the ache the way he’d catalogue anything else — shoulder still tender where the Duskstalker’s claws had caught him, legs heavy with four days of accumulated strain, the strange new quiet at the edges of his own awareness that he understood now belonged to Duskveil, settled into him like something that had always been there and only now made itself known.

Day twenty-five, he thought, working it out slowly. Lost most of it to sleep. Worth every hour of it.

He washed properly for the first time in nearly a week, using the modest basin the inn provided, and found himself lingering over the ordinary pleasure of it longer than the task strictly required — warm water, a clean shirt, the simple luxury of not being watched.

Downstairs, the inn’s common room carried the easy, unhurried rhythm of a village settling into its evening business, a handful of locals trading quiet conversation over modest meals, and the innkeeper — who introduced himself, once properly, as Ferris — greeted him with the same unhurried warmth he’d shown the night before.

”You look considerably more like a person today,” Ferris observed, setting a bowl down in front of him without being asked. ”Venison stew. Wife’s recipe, not mine — mine’s considerably worse, though I won’t tell her you asked.”

”Smells better than anything I’ve eaten in days,” Arlen admitted, and found, tasting it, that the observation held — rich, slow-simmered, carrying a deep, earthy sweetness he didn’t immediately recognize.

”Rootbriar,” Ferris said, when Arlen asked. ”Grows wild in the hedgerows this far from the city roads. Bitter raw, but it sweetens right up once it’s properly cooked down. Half this village puts it in everything from stew to bread, this time of year.”

Arlen filed the detail away with the same careful attention he gave every new ingredient, the old habit settling back into place now that exhaustion had finally loosened its grip. ”Do you get many travelers through here? Heading toward Aurenholt, I mean.”

”More than you’d think, though most don’t stop as long as you have. This is about the last proper village before the road starts feeling like it belongs to the capital more than to anywhere else.” Ferris settled onto the bench across from him, evidently in no hurry despite the evening’s modest business. ”Once you’re past here, you’ll start seeing it in the road itself — better maintained, wider, more traffic. Aurenholt’s pull starts reaching this far out, even if the city itself’s still a fair distance off.”

”How far, from here?”

”Depends how you travel. A courier’d make it in under two weeks, riding hard the whole way. Someone walking, taking their time...” Ferris shrugged. ”Three weeks, maybe a bit more, if you’re not in any particular rush.”

Arlen turned that over, doing the same careful arithmetic he’d been keeping since Greyhaven’s western gate — twenty-five days behind him now, something over three weeks still ahead, the total drifting close enough to the two months he’d estimated at the start that the number felt, for the first time, less like an abstraction and more like a distance he could actually feel closing.

”You’ve got the look of someone who’s been walking a long while already,” Ferris said, studying him with open, unhurried curiosity. ”Not many people your age make that whole road alone, by choice.”

”I wanted to see it properly,” Arlen said. ”Didn’t want to just hurry past everything on the way to somewhere bigger.”

Something in the older man’s weathered face shifted, approving. ”Good instinct. Most travelers who pass through here are so fixed on the capital they don’t even ask what the stew’s made of.” He nodded toward Arlen’s empty bowl. ”You asked. That’s rarer than you’d think.”

Arlen spent the remainder of that evening wandering the village’s modest length at an easy, unhurried pace, the last of his exhaustion finally working itself loose — a small market square, mostly closed for the day but for a single baker’s stall still selling the last of the day’s loaves; a weaver’s shop with a display of hedgerow-dyed wool in deep, earthy browns and greens unlike anything he’d seen in Greyhaven’s own market; a handful of children chasing each other around the village well with the same unselfconscious noise children made everywhere, regardless of how close or far the nearest capital happened to be.

He found himself, standing at the edge of the square as the evening light turned gold over the rooftops, struck by a quiet, settled contentment that had nothing to do with the road still ahead of him and everything to do with simply being present in this one small, unremarkable place before he left it behind for something considerably larger.

This is the last of it, he thought, watching the children scatter, laughing, toward their separate homes. The last quiet village before the road starts belonging to somewhere else. I’m glad I stopped long enough to actually see it, rather than just passing through on my way to bigger things.

He returned to the inn as full dark settled over the village, ordered a second, smaller helping of Ferris’s wife’s stew mostly for the pleasure of it, and slept that night without dreaming — properly, fully, the first uninterrupted night’s rest he’d had since long before the Duskstalker had first found his silk.
