Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 129: Chapter 129 — What the City Still Held

Day thirty-five began, as most mornings in Marrowgate apparently did, with bells.

Not the single, familiar toll of Greyhaven’s guild hall marking the hour, but a whole layered chorus of them — deep and resonant from somewhere near the temple district, brighter and quicker from what he guessed was a market bell further off, and beneath both, a thin, silvery ringing he couldn’t place at all until he remembered the still, water-ringed shrine from the evening before.

He dressed and made his way downstairs to find the inn’s common room already busy, Hettie setting down a plate in front of him.

”Riverbarley porridge, honey, a bit of dried fruit,” she said. ”Fill up. Long day of walking ahead of you, I’d wager.”

Arlen finished his porridge — rich, faintly sweet — and set out with the whole day properly ahead of him, the temple district his first destination now that yesterday’s exploration had left it only half-seen.

The shrines up close proved even stranger than they’d looked from a distance. The domed structure belonged, a passing priest explained when Arlen asked, to a minor river deity whose worship had spread up from the coast generations ago and simply never left; the sharp, angular spire beside it served a faith he didn’t recognize at all, its symbol a stylized flame that bent sideways as though caught in permanent wind. The water-ringed shrine turned out to be dedicated to something the locals called simply the Still Voice, and the priest tending it — an elderly halfling woman — allowed him to walk the narrow stone path around its edge, provided he didn’t disturb the water.

”Different from what you’re used to, I’d wager,” she said, watching him study the reflective surface.

”Very,” Arlen admitted. ”The Ashen Frontier’s got the Radiant Dawn, mostly. A few smaller shrines here and there. Nothing quite like this.”

”Marrowgate sits close enough to the capital that half the kingdom’s faiths eventually pass through it, one way or another. We’ve learned to make room.” She smiled. ”Most cities pick one god and defend the choice loudly. We just build another shrine when someone new arrives with reason to want one.”

He left the temple district with a fuller sense of the city’s peculiar character — not simply large, but accumulated , layer upon layer of people and custom settling here because the road demanded it.

He found the local guild outpost by midmorning, tucked into a modest but well-kept building near the city’s central square — smaller than Greyhaven’s own guild hall, but busier, the quest board crowded three deep in places with postings Arlen didn’t recognize the shape of at all.

”Passing through, or looking for local work?” the receptionist asked, a sharp-eyed human man processing a line of adventurers with brisk efficiency.

”Passing through. Curious how a branch this close to the capital operates.”

”Busier than most, and considerably more competitive.” He gestured at the crowded board without looking up from his ledger. ”Half our postings exist just to keep local talent occupied before they inevitably drift toward Aurenholt proper. We’re something of a waiting room, if I’m honest about it.”

”Do many adventurers stay here permanently? Rather than pushing on?”

”Some. Not many. Most people who make it this far came for the same reason you’re probably here — because Aurenholt’s the real destination, and everything before it’s just road.” He glanced at Arlen’s badge. ”Rank D, confirmed Awakened. You’ll find plenty to keep you busy there, whenever you arrive.”

Arlen thanked him and wandered the guild hall’s ground floor a while longer, listening to the layered noise of a dozen conversations he had no part in — quest gossip, complaints about reward rates, one heated argument over territorial rights to some contested job that reminded him, faintly, of Reya’s own sharp confidence back in Greyhaven.

He spent the early afternoon in the market square proper, sampling his way through a cluster of food stalls — a spiced flatbread from a stall run by an elderly orc; a small, sharp cheese wrapped in preserved grape leaves, sold by a dwarf who claimed the recipe hadn’t changed in four generations; a cup of something dark and bitter that the halfling vendor called river-coffee, brewed from beans that arrived via the same canal trade that brought the merfolk traders through.

”Careful with that,” the vendor warned, watching him take his first cautious sip. ”Stronger than it looks. Half the dockworkers swear by it before a long shift.”

It was strong. Arlen finished it anyway.

He noticed the same dark elf woman once more that evening, seated at a small table outside a scholar’s shop near the canal district, reading through a stack of parchment. She wasn’t the only unfamiliar face in the square — a pair of goblin clerks argued over a delivery a few doors down, and a merfolk courier had climbed partway out of the nearest canal to hand off a sealed letter — and Arlen gave her no more attention than any of the rest, one more piece of a city that seemed to hold new faces around every corner.

He made his way back to Hettie’s inn as full dark settled over Marrowgate, and sat for a while at the inn’s own modest table, working through the day’s accumulated impressions before finally opening his journal.

Two full days in Marrowgate, and I don’t think I’ve properly seen half of it. The temple district alone could have held me a week. A guild branch that treats itself as a waiting room for the capital, which I suppose, in its own way, I am too. Spiced flatbread, aged cheese, something called river-coffee strong enough to keep a dockworker upright through a full shift.

Marrowgate taught me something Ashford’s Crossing only gestured toward — that the world doesn’t just get bigger the further I travel. It gets more layered, more accumulated, richer than I could have properly imagined standing at Greyhaven’s western gate.

Tomorrow, I leave it behind.

He closed the journal, the inn settling into its quiet, late-evening rhythm around him, and turned his thoughts toward the road still waiting — weeks of it yet, but drawing steadily closer to its end.
