Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 107: Chapter 107 — What Remains Unanswered

They departed the site on the fourth morning, Garrick strong enough now to travel under his own power though Priya insisted on a considerably gentler pace than the outward journey had demanded, and Arlen found himself, walking away from the ruined structure they’d spent three days carefully uncovering, turning over the accumulated weight of everything the investigation had revealed.

”Strange, leaving with more questions than we arrived with,” Halvard observed, falling into step beside him as the party began the long journey back toward the boundary.

”I keep thinking about that,” Arlen admitted. ”We came here to purify a threat. We’re leaving having uncovered something considerably larger and stranger than anyone expected.”

Maren walked near the party’s center, the carefully preserved book and salvaged fragments packed with meticulous care among her own belongings, her expression carrying the same thoughtful, unsettled weight Arlen had noticed since the vault’s discovery.

”Sister Ashwood,” he said, catching up to her during a brief rest. ”What happens to everything we found, once we’re back?”

”Proper channels,” she said. ”The Radiant Dawn will want the book and fragments examined by scholars considerably more qualified than myself. The capital archive will want copies of everything documented — Osric’s already begun compiling a thorough record. And Professor Vale, I understand, deserves his own account, given his role in first uncovering this pattern.”

”Will we ever actually know what happened here? What they were doing?”

Maren considered the question with careful, honest attention. ”Perhaps. Mysteries this old rarely yield their secrets quickly, even to proper, sustained scholarship. I’ve learned, in this line of work, to accept that some answers arrive only gradually, if they arrive at all.” She studied him a moment. ”Does that trouble you?”

”A little,” Arlen admitted. ”I like understanding things properly. Leaving with this many open questions feels uncomfortable, honestly.”

”A fair discomfort to carry,” Maren said. ”Though I’d offer this — the questions themselves matter, even without immediate answers. Understanding that something significant happened here, that it wasn’t simple, isolated misfortune, that’s valuable knowledge in its own right, regardless of how long the full truth takes to properly surface.”

Arlen turned that over as they continued walking, finding genuine comfort in the framing despite his own persistent unease.

The journey back through the corrupted terrain proved considerably easier than their approach, the crystallized ground already showing signs of natural recovery in the areas closest to the purified site, ordinary soil and vegetation beginning to reassert themselves in ways that gave the whole party a quiet, cautious hope.

”Is this typical?” Doran asked, his arm still bound carefully from the injury he’d taken during the guardian’s final assault, studying the recovering terrain with evident interest. ”Land healing this quickly, once the corruption’s addressed?”

”I don’t have enough experience with sites this severe to say for certain,” Maren admitted. ”But it’s encouraging, regardless. Whatever damage the corruption caused, it doesn’t appear permanent, provided the underlying cause is properly resolved.”

They encountered no further hostile creatures during the return journey, the deep forest settling back into something closer to its natural, undisturbed quiet, and Arlen found the absence of danger almost disorienting after the sustained, brutal pressure of the past week.

”Feels strange, walking through here without expecting an attack every hour,” he admitted to Halvard, on their second day of the return journey.

”Good strange, though,” Halvard said. ”I’ll take peaceful and disorienting over what we actually faced getting here.”

They reached the middle forest boundary on their fourth day of travel, and Arlen found himself, crossing back into the outer forest’s more familiar terrain, struck by the same strange, dual sensation he remembered from his very first boundary crossing months earlier — relief at returning to known ground, tangled together with a quiet, persistent awareness of exactly how much had changed in him since he’d first stood at this exact threshold.

Garrick, walking beside him as they crossed, seemed to notice something in his expression. ”Full circle, in a sense.”

”Something like that,” Arlen admitted. ”I stood right here, years ago, watching a greatstag from a safe distance, thinking it was the most impressive thing I’d ever seen. Now I’ve fought things I couldn’t have properly imagined back then, and watched you do something I still don’t have adequate words for.”

”That’s the shape of a life well lived, I think,” Garrick said. ”Not a single dramatic transformation, but an accumulation of moments like this one — crossing the same ground, changed enough to barely recognize the person who once stood there.”

They made camp within the outer forest’s more familiar bounds that evening, the accumulated tension of the past week finally, properly beginning to ease, and Arlen found himself sharing a quiet meal with the full party for what felt like the first time since the crisis had truly begun — Doran’s arm healing steadily, Selene fully recovered from her earlier exhaustion, Grennig’s wound closed properly under Priya’s continued care, Garrick himself regaining color and strength with each passing day of gentler travel.

”To Sister Ashwood,” Doran said, raising a modest cup of water in the absence of anything stronger. ”For finishing what needed finishing, however much it cost all of us to get there.”

”To everyone,” Maren corrected, a rare, genuine warmth entering her usually composed expression. ”I couldn’t have managed any of this alone. I hope that’s understood clearly, whatever credit eventually reaches my order’s records.”

The evening settled into easy, genuine camaraderie, the kind of hard-won warmth that came only from surviving something difficult together, and Arlen found himself, watching the gathered party trade easy conversation around the fire, deeply grateful for every single person who’d made this expedition’s survival possible.

He wrote in his journal that night, the entry carrying a settled, reflective quality distinct from the unsettled uncertainty of the previous days.

Crossed back over the boundary today. Strange, standing on that exact ground again, remembering how impossibly distant this all once seemed. We’re carrying home more questions than answers about what we actually found, but I think Maren’s right — the questions themselves matter, even without immediate resolution.

Garrick’s recovering well. Everyone is, slowly but steadily. I think, more than anything else, I’m simply grateful tonight — for survival, for the people who made it possible, and for whatever comes next, once we’re finally home.

Three more days to Greyhaven, by Ilyana’s estimate. I find myself looking forward to it more than I expected — not just rest, but the chance to finally, properly process everything this expedition has taught me, before whatever comes after it.

He closed the journal, the camp settling into its warm, companionable quiet around him, and found himself, for the first time in what felt like considerably longer than the actual span of the crisis, genuinely at peace — the accumulated weight of Millbrook, the boundary, and everything uncovered along the way finally settling into something he could properly carry forward, rather than simply endure.
