Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 131: Chapter 131 — The Final Stretch

The rise climbed steadily for two full days, the river road narrowing further as it wound between hills grown tall enough to properly earn the name, and Arlen found himself, on the second morning, genuinely grateful for months of Garrett’s conditioning and Enduring Vitality’s steady support both, the incline demanding considerably more of his legs than any stretch since the middle forest boundary.

The land up here carried a different character than anything he’d crossed since Marrowgate — thinner soil, hardier grass, wind that carried a clean, mineral edge he associated more with mountain country than the gentle farmland he’d been walking through for weeks. Scattered stands of pine replaced the orchards and grazing land below, and the few homesteads he passed were built low and solid against weather considerably harsher than anything the lowlands seemed to demand.

He crested the final ridge on the third day, breathing hard, and found the view waiting for him worth every step of the climb.

The land fell away on the far side in long, terraced folds, and threading through the middle of it, wide and unmistakable even from this distance, ran the main highway — the real road, the one he’d left behind at Marrowgate’s edge, busier now than he remembered it, traffic moving in both directions in a steady, unbroken procession that made the quiet river road behind him look, by comparison, like something from an entirely different, gentler world.

There it is, he thought, studying the distant ribbon of traffic with something between relief and renewed anticipation. Found its way back to me, same as I hoped.

The descent took the better part of the afternoon, the river road gradually widening and improving as it approached the point where the two routes finally converged — a wide junction marked by a cluster of waystations and a guard post considerably larger than anything Arlen had seen since Corvale, soldiers in matching uniform checking papers with brisk, unhurried efficiency.

”River road,” one of them noted, glancing at Arlen’s modest, travel-worn pack rather than any obvious cargo. ”Not many take that route this far north. Everything all right out there?”

”Quiet, mostly. Good quiet.” Arlen offered his guild badge, which the guard barely glanced at before waving him through. ”Just preferred the slower pace.”

”Each to their own.” The guard’s attention had already shifted toward the next traveler in line. ”Main road from here on. You’ll want to keep pace with the traffic — waystations get crowded this close in, and the good rooms go early.”

Arlen thanked him and stepped out onto the main highway properly for the first time in twelve days, and felt the difference immediately — not just in the road’s width or the quality of its surface, but in the sheer, layered noise of it, wagons and riders and foot traffic moving with a purposeful urgency that the quiet river road had never once demanded of him.

He fell into step at the edge of the flow, matching the general pace without quite matching its urgency, and found himself, within the first hour, swept up in fragments of conversation from travelers moving alongside him in both directions — merchants discussing prices he didn’t recognize, a pair of off-duty soldiers arguing good-naturedly about a wager neither would explain, a family with three children who’d clearly made this same stretch of road many times before, judging by how little the passing scenery interested any of them.

”First trip to the capital?” asked a voice beside him, and Arlen turned to find a young courier riding at an easy pace, matching his stride out of apparent boredom more than genuine interest.

”First trip anywhere past the Ashen Frontier, if I’m honest,” Arlen admitted.

”You’ll want to brace yourself, then.” The courier grinned, the expression carrying the particular, knowing amusement of someone who’d made the journey enough times to have forgotten what it felt like the first time. ”Doesn’t matter how many big cities you’ve already passed through. Aurenholt’s not like any of them. Ashford’s Crossing, Marrowgate — those are proper cities, sure. Aurenholt’s something else.”

”How much further, from here?”

”Week and a half, maybe two, at your pace.” The courier studied him a moment, something almost sympathetic in the assessment. ”Long road behind you already, by the look of it.”

”Longer than I expected, in some ways. Shorter in others.” Arlen found the answer honest despite its vagueness. ”Worth every day of it, so far.”

The courier laughed at that, not unkindly, and spurred his horse into a faster pace, calling back over his shoulder as he pulled ahead. ”Save that attitude for the capital gates. You’ll need it.”

Arlen kept walking, the highway’s traffic thickening steadily with every mile as the road carried him deeper into territory that felt, increasingly, like it belonged to the capital’s gravity rather than to any of the regions he’d already passed through. Waystations appeared with growing regularity, each one busier than the last, and the milestones themselves had changed character too — no longer simple distance markers, but proper monuments in places, carved with what he guessed were the names of past rulers or significant events he had no context to properly understand yet.

He made camp that evening in a designated waystation clearing rather than off on his own, the first time in weeks he’d shared a fire’s immediate vicinity with strangers, and found the arrangement oddly companionable — a dozen or so travelers scattered across the clearing in loose clusters, trading quiet conversation or simply eating in comfortable silence, all of them bound, one way or another, toward the same distant destination.

An older merchant nearby offered him a share of spiced wine, which Arlen declined politely, and a portion of proper bread instead, which he accepted gratefully, and the two of them talked for a while about nothing especially significant — the merchant’s opinion on the best inns along this final stretch, a mild complaint about recent toll increases at the capital gates themselves, the ordinary, comfortable texture of two strangers passing an evening together before continuing on their separate ways come morning.

Arlen lay back against his bedroll that night, the waystation’s fire burned low, the highway’s traffic finally quiet until dawn, and found himself, for the first time since Marrowgate, properly surrounded by the accumulated weight of a road that led somewhere enormous — not the quiet, solitary wonder of the river crossing or the empty grassland, but something louder, busier, unmistakably drawing every traveler on it toward the same singular point on the map.

He didn’t know, lying there, exactly how many days remained. He knew only that the road beneath him now was the real one, the one that had been waiting for him since Greyhaven’s western gate, and that whatever else the final stretch still held, he intended to walk every mile of it properly, rather than rushing toward an ending he’d spent this entire second life patiently preparing to reach.
