Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat

Chapter 115: Chapter 115 — The Last Night in Greyhaven

His quarters felt strange this last evening — the same evening the day’s farewells had finally led him to, everything he owned now packed and ready near the door, the small room stripped down to nothing but bare furniture and the particular, hollow quiet of a place about to be left behind.

Arlen sat on the edge of his bed, journal in hand, and found himself, for the first time in longer than he could easily remember, uncertain exactly where to begin.

He opened to the very first page instead, the ink faded now but still legible, his own careful, uncertain handwriting describing the day he’d first walked through the guild’s doors, badge and journal freshly in hand.

I’d like to become an adventurer, the old entry read, the words he remembered speaking aloud to Mina now preserved permanently in his own uncertain script.

He smiled, reading it back, remembering the eighteen-year-old who’d written it — nervous, half-starved, and somehow, even then, already carrying the quiet, patient determination that would eventually carry him this far.

He turned through the pages slowly, one by one, watching his own handwriting mature alongside the life it documented — the careful accounting of his first quest rewards, the nervous excitement of registering at the guild, the slow, deliberate building of friendships that had become, gradually and without any single defining moment, something close to genuine family.

He found the entry describing Millbrook, the ink slightly unsteady where his hands had still been shaking as he wrote it, and felt the old, familiar weight of that night settle into him one final time before finally, properly releasing its grip.

He found the entry naming Predator’s Feast for the first time, sitting beside the Broodmother’s cooling remains, exhausted and injured but genuinely, quietly proud of finally putting proper words to the strange power that had shaped so much of this remarkable second life.

He found Fennis, and Garrett’s patient instruction, and Eldrin’s genuine, scholarly warmth, and Reya’s sharp, protective friendship — every careful page a small, honest piece of the whole, patient shape this year and more had built.

He set the journal down eventually, his eyes damp in a way he didn’t feel any particular need to hide, and simply sat for a while in the quiet, gathering room, letting the accumulated weight of everything settle properly into him.

I promised myself, dying in that other life, he thought, the familiar words arriving with the same clarity they always carried. I promised I wouldn’t waste this second chance. That I’d see everything, taste everything, live without the regret of a life spent only working, only waiting for some better day that never actually arrived.

He thought of the office, the gray fluorescent light, the exhausted collapse that had ended one life and, impossibly, begun another. He thought of the drainage ditch, the flood of memory, the quiet, ten-year-old certainty that had first decided this second chance deserved to be honored properly.

He thought of the slums, and Old Maren’s kindness, and Bram’s patient stories, and every small, hard-won piece of preparation that had eventually carried him to the guild’s doors, eighteen years old and finally, genuinely ready to begin.

He thought of Cobb’s easy warmth, and Sil’s quiet loyalty, and Reya’s sharp, generous friendship. He thought of Garrett’s demanding, patient instruction, and Eldrin’s genuine scholarly delight, and Ysolde’s practical, unwavering care. He thought of Fennis, and the honest, unhurried intimacy they’d shared, and the mature, grateful clarity with which they’d both let it settle into something whole.

He thought of Millbrook, and the boundary crisis, the Guild Master’s true power finally, dramatically revealed in service of protecting everyone who’d trusted him. He thought of Maren’s grinding, dangerous patience, and Ilyana’s disciplined leadership, and the whole remarkable, hard-won victory they’d built together against something considerably larger than any single person could have properly faced alone.

Eight abilities, he thought, turning over the accumulated shape of this strange, remarkable gift. Enduring Vitality. Water Affinity. Ember Touch. Hawk’s Eye. Storm Step. Earthen Grip. Shadow Sense. Web-Silk Binding.

He thought of the mystery still waiting, unresolved, in Eldrin’s capable hands — the ancient ruins, the ruined book, the whole vast, unsettling question of what actually happened, centuries ago, to leave such careful, deliberate scars across the world. He thought of Vessa’s old warning, still unresolved, still waiting somewhere in his memory for whatever day it finally became relevant again.

The world holds more than I ever properly imagined, he thought. Wonder and danger both, in equal, unresolved measure. I understand that now, in a way I only partially grasped standing at this exact threshold a year and more ago.

He rose eventually, crossing to the small window that overlooked Greyhaven’s familiar, sleeping rooftops, and stood there a long while, simply looking out at the city that had given him everything — a home, a family, a foundation solid enough to finally, properly carry him toward the horizon he’d spent his entire second life preparing to cross.

Tomorrow, he thought, the word carrying a weight considerably larger than its simple, ordinary shape. Tomorrow, I finally walk through that gate again. Not as a boy watching adventurers pass by, wondering what the world might hold. As someone who’s finally, genuinely ready to go find out.

He returned to his journal one final time before allowing himself sleep, and found the words arriving with a settled, grateful clarity distinct from anything he’d written before.

Last night in Greyhaven. Strange, how quiet a room feels once everything’s properly packed away. I spent the evening reading back through this whole journal, start to finish, and found myself genuinely moved by how much of a life it actually documents — not just growth, though there’s plenty of that, but genuine, hard-won gratitude for every single person who helped build it alongside me.

I don’t know exactly what waits beyond tomorrow’s gate. The capital, certainly, and the Sundered Depths Kess described with such genuine warmth. Beyond that, I honestly don’t know — new regions, new cultures, new creatures and abilities and mysteries I can’t properly imagine yet, the same way I couldn’t have properly imagined any of what this past year actually held, standing at the guild’s doors for the very first time.

I only know I’m ready. Properly, genuinely ready, in a way I don’t think I could have honestly claimed even a few months ago.

This journal carried me through the first Chapter of this remarkable second life. I intend to fill considerably more pages before I’m finished — new discoveries, new friends, new horizons I haven’t even properly imagined yet.

Tomorrow, I finally begin finding out what they hold.

He closed the journal for the final time in that small, familiar room, set it carefully atop his packed belongings, and lay down for what he understood would be his last night’s sleep within Greyhaven’s walls — not anxious, not uncertain, but settled, grateful, and genuinely, finally ready for whatever the morning’s departure would finally, properly begin.
